The Story of My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia is a Japanese superhero manga series written and illustrated by Kohei Horikoshi. The story follows Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without superpowers (called Quirks) in a world where they have become commonplace, but he still dreams of becoming a superhero. He is scouted by All Might, Japan's greatest hero, who chooses Midoriya as his successor and shares his Quirk with him after recognizing his potential. Later, he helps Midoriya enroll in a prestigious school for hero training.
The series has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since July 2014, with its chapters collected into 30 tankōbon volumes as of April 2021. The series has also inspired several spin-off manga, such as My Hero Academia Smash!!, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, and My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions, as well as an anime TV series by Bones. Its first season aired in Japan from April to June 2016, followed by a second season from April to September 2017, a third season from April to September 2018, a fourth season from October 2019 to April 2020, and a fifth season launched in March 2021. It has also received three animated films, titled My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, and My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission. A live-action film by Legendary Entertainment is also in the works.
The adaptation of the manga and anime has received widespread praise from critics and fans alike and is considered one of the best of the 2010s, winning several awards, including the 2019 Harvey Award for Best Manga. As of April 2021, the manga had over 50 million copies in circulation worldwide.
The story of My Hero Academia takes place in a world where most of the human population has acquired the ability to develop superpowers called Quirks, which manifest in children under the age of four. It is estimated that around 80% of the world's population has a Quirk. Among those enhanced by Quirks, some gain the title of Hero, who work with authorities to rescue civilians and apprehend criminals who abuse their powers, commonly known as Villains. Additionally, heroes who excel in their duties achieve celebrity status and are recognized as Pro Heroes.
The series focuses on Izuku Midoriya, a young man who dreams of becoming a hero despite being bullied by his violent childhood friend Katsuki Bakugo for lacking a Quirk. Both young men idolize one of the world's greatest heroes, All Might, whom they have both met, with Izuku being one of the few to know about a serious injury All Might has hidden from the public to maintain morale. All Might also reveals the nature of his Quirk, "One For All", and passes it on to Izuku to succeed him after witnessing the young man's determination in the face of danger. As Izuku begins his journey to become a hero while attending U.A. High School alongside Bakugo and the friends they make in Class 1-A, a nemesis of One For All users named All For One conditions his apprentice Tomura Shigaraki to destroy the current society and its heroes.
