Ranking the Best Class 1-A Characters in My Hero Academia!

My Hero Academia features an impressive cast, but the anime mainly focuses on UA High School’s Class 1-A, the same class as the protagonist Izuku Midoriya.

This class of twenty teenage trainees adds a school dimension to My Hero Academia, forming one of the most developed student groups fans have ever seen. Class 1-A goes far beyond a simple high school class where the hero would be confined to the seat by the window.

Throughout seven seasons, My Hero Academia has delved deeply into the twenty students of Class 1-A: their quirks, hero costumes, personalities, stories, and even their tastes in room decor, as shown by the university dorm contest. Some are genuine shonen protagonists with captivating backstories, while others blend into the background, sometimes called “background characters” by Bakugo. The top ten students of Class 1-A are all main characters worthy of attention, whom fans can support and appreciate.

Updated March 2, 2025, by Louis Kemner: This list of the best Class 1-A characters has been expanded with five additional entries, as fans now know these students better. Since My Hero Academia’s story is finished in the manga, their development as heroes and individuals is now complete.

15. Rikido Sato, the muscular hero passionate about cooking

Rikido Sato, nicknamed Sugarman, is the last among the best Class 1-A characters, as his personal story remains limited even in the complete manga. He embodies the “gentle giant,” a beloved archetype in fiction.

A bulky teenager with powerful muscles thanks to his quirk “Sugar Rush,” Rikido is a kind and noble student hero who never abuses his strength. His shyness in baking gives him an unexpected charm. His desserts earned him victory in the university dorm contest, boosting his popularity with classmates.

14. Mezo Shoji, sincere hero against Spinner

Mezo Shoji is among the lesser-developed students, ranking low in Class 1-A’s hierarchy. Yet the anime devoted screen time to him, especially in season 7 during the clash with Spinner amid a heteromorphic riot.

Mezo showed himself a genuine hero by sympathizing with heteromorphs frustrated by discrimination. Aware of their pain, he rejected darkness and selfishness, urging the crowd to retreat and protect society.

13. Koji Koda, courage and gentleness against Spinner

Like Mezo, Koji Koda feels different in a world where most have quirks. His appearance and shyness isolate him, but he refuses to become a monster. Kind and gentle, he channels these qualities to confront Spinner’s heteromorphic crowd.

Koji excelled by fighting with his Anivoice quirk, refusing to stay on the sidelines. Appreciated for his friendly introversion and love of animals, he earns his peers’ respect.

12. Yuga Aoyama, a hero embracing his responsibilities

Long perceived as one of the least likable students, Yuga Aoyama gained popularity through seasons 6 and 7, entering Class 1-A’s top 10. Behind his vain appearance hides a generous heart.

Fans know he was born quirkless, his parents making a deal with All For One to grant him the Navel Laser quirk. Despite that, he shows empathy toward Deku, also born quirkless, and wishes him well. Although he betrayed the class, he is plagued by guilt and ready to redeem himself.

11. Eijiro Kirishima, the manly and confident hero

Eijiro Kirishima is not flashy, but his manly and wholesome personality makes him easy to like. Self-conscious about his “boring” quirk, he admired Crimson Riot and was encouraged by Mina Ashido to pursue his dreams.

He became a manly and kind hero, contrasting with Bakugo’s fiery temper. He impressed by helping Fat Gum defeat two of Overhaul’s Eight Bullets.

10. Mina Ashido, the energetic girl with dancing moves

Mina Ashido is Class 1-A’s genki girl, charming and pleasant since her debut. Despite low grades, she combines dance and acid quirk to become an agile fighter, especially during the sports festival tournament.

Carefree and friendly, she supports her classmates and gains strength and endurance as a professional hero. Her humor and endearing personality guarantee her a spot among the top students, even if other characters are more developed.

9. Tenya Iida, the responsible older brother of the class

Though the younger brother of pro hero Ingenium, Tenya Iida acts as a strict and responsible older brother in Class 1-A. A disciplined extrovert, he enjoys leadership roles to bring out the best in everyone, sometimes compensating for his rigid behavior.

He impresses with his motivation and discipline, following his brother’s example. He shows remarkable courage, pushing his limits despite pain.

8. Kyoka Jiro, the confident punk rock girl

Kyoka Jiro is sometimes underestimated, but her modest evolution is realistic and relatable. Passionate about music, she hid her punk rock side out of shyness before friends encouraged her to fully express herself.

She led the class rock band during the school festival, an important moment for her.

7. Fumikage Tokoyami, the chunibyo with a powerful quirk

Fumikage Tokoyami may seem a bit naive with his chunibyo manners, but he takes his student hero role seriously. Despite his melodramatic side, he is humble and generous, especially considering the power of his Dark Shadow quirk.

Born with formidable talent, he trained hard, fighting Dark Shadow in a cave and collaborating with Hawks to develop new techniques. He became a key figure in the joint training arc, even though he succumbed to Kinoko’s surprise attack.

6. Tsuyu Asui, the responsible sister

Tsuyu Asui, aka Froppy, has established herself as one of Class 1-A’s top students. Her popularity stems from her responsible big sister attitude, connected to her role among siblings at home. She is also smart, rational, and calm, essential qualities in the class.

Often the voice of reason, she is very attached to her friends, even crying during Bakugo’s rescue mission. Her frog theme, elegant costume, and fondness for Selkie’s strange behavior make her very appreciated.

5. Momo Yaoyorozu, passionate about heroism

Momo Yaoyorozu could have been a rich and bossy girl, but she is humble and treats all classmates equally. This maturity allowed her to realize she must become Plus Ultra and not rely on her quirk or grades.

Endearing, she overcame complacency and doubts to grow. Her journey shows everyone can improve, placing her among the best in Class 1-A.

4. Katsuki Bakugo, redemption and friendship

Evaluating Katsuki Bakugo, Deku’s rival, is complex due to his many flaws. Initially, he bullied Deku, despising his lack of a quirk, even after Deku inherited One For All.

However, Bakugo deeply cares about Deku, taking a deadly blow for him and cooperating with him against Nine. His sincere apologies in season 6 cement their friendship and reveal Bakugo’s best side, the master of explosions.

3. Ochaco Uraraka, fighter for her parents

Ochaco Uraraka quickly became Deku’s best friend at university, welcoming him from the start. She became his greatest ally, wishing to emulate him and be as strong. She also has close friendships with Tsuyu and Mina.

Though her quirk is modest, she remains an underdog, which fans find appealing. Coming from a family often struggling financially, she vowed to succeed as a professional hero to support her parents.

2. Shoto Todoroki, an independent hero

Fans quickly learned Shoto Todoroki is not just a distant prodigy rivaling Deku but also the product of a quirk marriage that shaped his life. Born to surpass All Might, he seeks to become his own hero.

Despite a difficult past, Shoto could not become a villain. He bonded with classmates, seeing them as valuable allies, and is ready to reconcile with his father, giving Endeavor a chance at redemption, a noble act.

1. Izuku Midoriya, from zero to hero with a big heart

The main hero, Deku, is the best student in Class 1-A in many ways. Generous, he understands what it’s like to be born quirkless and aspires to become a symbol of peace, like All Might. He embodies the virtue of hard work through his quirk One For All.
