10. Chazz vs Aster: the deserved victory of the underdog

Shortly after the start of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Chazz Princeton evolves from Jaden Yuki’s comic rival to a more serious character. Although he is a talented student with an entertaining deck and notable development, he rarely wins. His ultimate duel against Aster Phoenix, Jaden’s second rival, is therefore a real pleasure to watch.

This match, organized by Mike, a dubious promoter, pits Chazz and Aster in a battle where Chazz’s career is on the line. Despite moral and personal stakes, Jaden’s intervention balances the duel. Armed Dragons and Ojamas face the Destiny HEROES in an intense duel where Chazz surprises by earning a hard-fought victory.

9. Jaden vs Aster, third round: the appearance of the Neo-Spacians

Jaden Yuki, one of the franchise’s top duelists, is not invincible. Early in season 2, he suffers a harsh defeat against Aster Phoenix, testing his will. But he returns stronger, with new allies and an innovative Neo-Spacian deck.

This renewal of his arsenal, after years of using the same cards, is refreshing. After being manipulated by Aster and Sartorius, Jaden finally counters them and wins. The contrast between Jaden’s carefree heroism and Aster’s seriousness heightens the duel’s tension.

8. Chazz vs Slade: a duel motivated by a unique challenge

Chazz’s narrative arc culminates with his confrontation against his older brother, Slade Princeton. With Seto Kaiba’s permission, Slade threatens to destroy Duel Academy if he beats a student under his rules: no monster can exceed 500 ATK points. Disadvantaged, Chazz must build a new deck and develop his Ojama strategies.

This confrontation highlights the abuses Chazz suffered and marks a turning point where he stops seeking his brothers’ approval to defend his school. The revelation that Kaiba doubted Slade’s chances adds a touch of humor.

7. Jaden vs Yubel: a strange and emotional climax

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX sometimes struggles to make its final duels as memorable as those of the original series. Notably, the final duel of season 3 between Jaden and Yubel, composed of five episodes in two parts, is rich in twists.

Facing the loss of almost all his friends, Jaden fights to save the universe against Yubel, who controls Jesse Anderson. Despite Yubel’s total control, Jaden draws on memories and his past love to find victory. Rather than defeating Yubel, he merges with her, promising to protect them forever.

6. Jaden vs Zane, second round: an intense duel

The duel between Jaden and Zane Truesdale closes season 1. After a loss to Zane, Jaden accepts his challenge for the Graduation Duel, ready to face his Cyber Dragon deck.

The battle is tight with impressive exchanges where defeating the Cyber End Dragon seems impossible. Despite a somewhat weak subplot, the explosive final where both increase their ATK points to extreme levels more than compensates.

5. Jaden vs Dr. Crowler, second round: an emotional rematch

The climax of season 4 shows Jaden and his friends facing their future. The rematch duel against Dr. Crowler reflects the ambivalent attachment between student and teacher. Beautifully executed, the fight ends with Flame Wingman’s victory over Ancient Gear Golem, marking a moment when Jaden briefly regains his smile.

4. Jaden vs Yugi: a duel rich in fan service

The finale pits original hero Yugi against his successor Jaden, mixing nostalgia and renewal. Yugi and Pharaoh Atem use their iconic monsters, while Jaden rediscovers the joy of dueling after a depressive period. The outcome remains unknown, highlighting that the main thing is the joy of the duel.

3. Axel vs The Supreme King: the last hero against an unrelenting enemy

In episode 142, Jaden is transformed into the Supreme King by the Gentle Darkness, killing most of his friends. Axel Brodie, the only one able to resist, faces the tyrant in a desperate duel.

Despite the efficiency of his Volcanic deck, Axel cannot overcome the Supreme King’s power and sacrifices himself to free Jaden, resulting in a draw.

Axel, Jaden’s loyal ally, is mentally tortured by Trueman, an agent of Darkness who rewrites his memories. Despite his skills, Axel is defeated and assimilated by the Darkness, discovering that his childhood traumas were illusions.

Zane, a hero turned anti-hero, faces Yubel in a final duel filled with emotion. Despite the power of his Cyber End Dragon, Zane loses and succumbs to a heart attack, delivering a memorable and tragic duel.
