Aira Shiratori: Main Character in the Manga Series Dandadan

Aira Shiratori is one of the main characters in the manga series Dandadan. She is a former star student at Kami High School, who later becomes one of the most important allies to Momo Ayase and Okarun in their battles with the paranormal.

Appearance

Aira is a distinctively styled young girl, with short, light pink hair framing the left side of her face and deep pink eyes. Her beauty doesn't go unnoticed by the boys in her school, who find her particularly attractive—a fact she is well aware of and very proud of.

Her daily outfit consists of a typical school uniform: a dark blazer with the school's emblem on the left chest, neatly buttoned up, a collared shirt, a bow, a short dark skirt, high socks, and sandals. She often wears a long-sleeved sweater under her blazer, changing styles depending on the occasion.

Personality

Initially, Aira relished her status as a popular girl at Kami High, making a point to maintain her image. Outwardly, she projected a sweet, somewhat naïve or ditzy persona, but inside, she was vain, arrogant, and tough. She used her looks to tease the boys in her class, whom she secretly despised, often becoming intoxicated by her own charm. She didn't hesitate to act cruelly when provoked, going so far as to anonymously spread malicious rumors about Momo as revenge for an embarrassing incident in which Momo used her powers to drop a bathtub on her head.

The discovery of Okarun's kintama triggered a messiah complex in Aira: she saw her new ability to perceive spirits―triggered by the mysterious golden sphere―as a divine mission, believing herself to be the chosen one to protect the world from evil. Her vanity strengthened this belief, attributing her beauty as one of the reasons for being chosen. After witnessing Momo's psychic powers, which she labeled "demonic wings," she declared herself Momo’s enemy and swore to defeat her. However, this aspect soon faded when the Evil Eye was merged with Jiji.

Despite her apparent arrogance and fierceness, Aira is tormented by guilt. Overwhelmed with remorse for the rumor she spread about Momo—which caused a public humiliation for Aira, exposing her in her underwear—she confessed her wrongdoing, restoring Momo's honor at the expense of her own popularity. She also sincerely apologized to Momo for causing danger related to the Evil Eye, when she had accidentally splashed Jiji with a cold drink. This memory drives her to continue fighting the giants summoned by the Music Room Portraits.

Aira also displays empathy and compassion. After narrowly escaping being eaten by Acrobatic Silky, she felt pity for the yokai, learning from Turbo Granny that the yokai would be forgotten by the living and the dead if their aura vanished. Aira then ensured Acrobatic Silky reached Nirvana by kissing her and recognizing her as a mother, wishing peace for her and her child in the afterlife. Upon witnessing Bamora's suffering and the extraterrestrial's distress facing the Kur, Aira was moved to tears and vowed to defeat these invaders in Bamora's honor.

Having lost her school popularity, Aira shed her superficial image. As a member of Momo and Okarun's social circle, she asserts herself more, displaying pride, discipline, and a certain haughtiness. She sees herself as the group's natural leader, rejecting any exclusion or attempts by others to take charge. She is especially wary of outsiders joining the Family, insisting any new member must be pre-approved. She expresses her opinions frankly, defending what she feels is right, such as voicing objections to Jiji’s continual surveillance after the decision to spare the Evil Eye. Aira is particularly strict with Momo, Jiji, and Mr. Mantis-Shrimp during training, but still cares for them deeply as both combat partners and close friends.

Despite her seriousness, Aira sometimes displays a mischievous and playful side. She considered visiting Moe Moe Kikoho to tease Momo after learning from Jiji about her maid job there. She also playfully mocked Momo and Jiji for sleeping close together. She is especially fond of things she finds cute. Although she initially disapproved of Mr. Mantis-Shrimp's return to Kamigoe City, she changed her opinion after meeting Chiquitita, whom she found adorable. At times, she was charmed by Momo’s small stature, feeling the urge to treat her like a doll.

Touched by Okarun's selflessness when he helped her against Acrobatic Silky, Aira developed a crush on him, which she is not shy to express. She is gentler and more affectionate towards him than other friends, often blushing in his presence. Believing that a girl true to her principles deserves a sincere relationship, Aira is ready to support Okarun however she can. She also shows jealousy: she and Momo tried to keep Bamora away from Okarun after she got too close, and she scolded Bamora for her boldness. Admitting her lack of romantic experience, Aira consulted her father’s "books" to better understand romance, which led her to impulsively attempt kissing Okarun.

Aira is also modest, careful not to let her skirt reveal her underwear in battles, and dislikes her clothes, especially her school uniform, getting damaged during fights.

Origins

As a child, Aira thought she saw a mysterious woman in red on the street, believing it to be her deceased mother. Realizing her mistake, she continued on with her father, unaware that the figure had been following her for a long time.

During childhood, Aira learned to play the piano and competed against her peers. After losing to a girl named Kouki Yukishiro, she worked hard to surpass her but quickly gave up, finding the effort too tedious.
