Choso is a Nine-Phase Fetus, a hybrid born from the union between a human and Curses, created by Noritoshi Kamo.
He is the eldest of Eso and Kechizu.

Originally incarnated and allied with Mahito and his group of Curses, Choso discovers during the Shibuya Incident that Suguru Geto, whose body is controlled by Noritoshi Kamo—his creator—shares a familial bond with him. Learning that Yuji Itadori is also a child of this entity, he chooses to ally with this new brother.
Appearance
Choso appears as a tall, athletic man. His long black hair is styled in two buns with a messy fringe covering his forehead. He has dark circles under his intense black eyes, fine eyebrows, and a wide black horizontal line across the bridge of his nose, often the site of nosebleeds.
His outfit includes a white long-sleeve garment, a purple sweater, loose white pants, a purple scarf, and a matching belt. He completes his look with brown boots.
Personality
Most of the time, Choso is reserved, stoic, and rather closed off. In combat, he shows patience, waiting for orders even if he dislikes the situation or feels exhausted, without particular concern for others.
However, he reveals deep affection for his brothers, who are the center of his life. He states that he lives only for them and is willing to do anything to ensure their happiness. This extreme sensitivity makes the sibling trio vulnerable to manipulation according to Kokichi Muta.
Following the death of his brothers, Choso develops a violent thirst for vengeance, determined to eliminate those responsible.
History
Past
Choso belongs to the Nine-Phase Fetuses, offspring of a mother capable of procreating with Curses. Noritoshi Kamo (possessed by Kenjaku), who experimented on his mother, is considered his third “parent,” having integrated his blood into the fetuses'. Although he remembers little of his past, he harbors deep resentment toward Noritoshi for manipulating his family’s life.
Choso and his brothers were subsequently locked away as relics.
Group Instinct Arc
In 2018, incarnated by Mahito in human bodies, Choso and his brothers join the Curses, sharing their worldview.
Later, while playing with Suguru Geto and Mahito, Choso senses his brothers have been murdered. Suguru learns they were killed by Yuji and Nobara Kugisaki.
Shibuya Incident Arc
On October 31 in Shibuya, Choso joins Jogo and Hanami, ready to fight Satoru Gojo. After several battles and combined attacks, Satoru uses his Domain Expansion to freeze all beings present, eliminating altered humans.
Recovering, Choso continues fighting Mahito and Suguru, seeking to kill Yuji to avenge his brothers. Their fight culminates in an intense showdown at a train station, where troubling memories ultimately push Choso to consider Yuji as a brother and change sides.
Choso then confronts Noritoshi Kamo, demanding answers, but is stopped by Uraume and other exorcists. Rescued by Yuji, the battle continues until Yuki Tsukumo arrives, forcing Noritoshi and Uraume to flee.
Yuji Execution Arc
After the Shibuya Incident, Choso accompanies Yuji in hunting Curses. During an encounter with Naoya Zenin, they are interrupted by the sudden appearance of Yuta Okkotsu.
Choso engages in underground combat, mastering his Red Scale Rush technique to pursue Naoya, whom he poisons before being knocked out in extremis by Yuta. The half-Curse passionately defends the value of brotherly bonds despite hardships.
While Yuji, Yuta, and Megumi discuss how to reach Tengen’s hideout, Choso intervenes, affirming they can count on him.
Upon arriving at the exorcism school, Yuji, Megumi, Yuta, and Choso meet Yuki Tsukumo and Maki Zenin. Choso explains to the two women that due to his connection with the Nine-Phase Fetuses, he can precisely locate Tengen’s domain. Intrigued, Maki asks who he is, and Yuji calls him a sort of big brother. Together, they descend into the school’s basements. Facing the cursed reserve, Choso senses his brothers’ presence and promises to come back for them. Arriving at the Dead Star Pavilion and detecting no activity, they decide to leave, but Tengen appears and stops them.
Yuki then questions Tengen about the reason for sealing the Pavilion, who explains fearing they might sympathize with Kenjaku. Confused, Yuki asks who Kenjaku is; Tengen reveals he is the exorcist residing in Suguru Geto’s body and formerly in Noritoshi Kamo’s. Explaining that Kenjaku’s goal is to forcibly merge with humanity, Choso is amazed at the possibility given Kenjaku’s unique nature. Tengen clarifies he is a transcended existence with simultaneous presence in “heaven and earth.” He also expresses fear of being absorbed by Kenjaku and the need for two bodyguards. Choso and Yuki volunteer for this mission.
Tengen then explains how to unlock Satoru Gojo’s seal. He provides the “Reverse” of the Border of Torment and explains they will need either the Heavenly Spear or the Black Ropes to open it. However, the Spear has been sealed or destroyed by Gojo, who may also have annihilated the Ropes. Yuta mentions searching for other Black Ropes with Miguel without success. Tengen then references a new asset: Hana Kurusu, a millennial exorcist capable of nullifying spells.
Next, Choso and allies analyze the rules of the Killing Game to devise a strategy. Afterwards, Yuji, Megumi, Yuta, and Maki depart, Yuji warmly thanking Choso for his help.
Abilities & Skills
Choso is a class S relic endowed with considerable occult energy and masters one of the most powerful and balanced techniques. He has exceptional affinity allowing him to innovate and perfect his skills. Though still inexperienced, he defeated seasoned fighters such as Yuji and Naoya, consolidating his status as a fearsome Curse.
Physical abilities
Possessing remarkable strength, enhanced by his Red Scale Rush technique, Choso inflicted serious wounds on Yuji, breaking several walls with powerful strikes. His fists, hardened by his blood, allowed him to injure Yuji’s shoulder and even immobilize him.
Choso also boasts great speed, capable of surprising Naoya with swift attacks. His reflexes are exceptional, enabling him to dodge and counter efficiently, even against fast opponents. In response to Naoya’s increasing speed, he uses an enhanced version of the Red Scale Rush to adapt.
His endurance is impressive, able to withstand multiple hits without faltering. Naoya himself notes this unusual resilience. Choso claims to have trained intensely to reach this level. Despite powerful assaults from Yuji, he held on until victory.
Melee Combat
Choso excels in close combat, holding his own against fighters like Yuji and Naoya. Combined with his spells, his martial techniques prove extremely effective.
Physiology
Choso’s blood has toxic properties, also transmissible to his brothers, powerful enough to affect millennial exorcists like Uraume.
As a Nine-Phase Fetus, he can convert his occult energy into blood at will, never risking exsanguination as long as his energy lasts.
Exorcism
Hemocyte Manipulation is Choso’s innate technique, consisting of charging his blood with occult energy for various attacks. This inherited technique from the Kamo clan appears to come via Noritoshi Kamo’s bloodline.
This power also allows him to sense his brothers’ suffering remotely, notably detecting their deaths intensely—which led him to discover his blood relation to Yuji at the end of their fight.
- Mowing: an offensive technique that slices the opponent with his own blood.
- Contraction: compresses his blood to release a sudden discharge.
- Supernova: releases compressed blood in a shotgun-like blast.
- Piercing Blood: a Contraction shot surpassing the sound barrier, capable of piercing the target.
- Red Scale Rush: manipulation of internal blood increasing strength and speed, accompanied by a bloodstain on his face.
- Enhanced Red Scale Rush: a maximum version of this technique, further boosting his abilities with a facial stain modification.
- Blood Blade: forges a lethal blade through rapid blood circulation.
- Blood Asteroid: coagulates a reinforced sphere of blood to launch at the enemy.
- Winged Sovereign: creates blood wings that enable targeted effective attacks.

Anecdotes
- The name Choso literally means “swelling phase” and, like his brothers, he is inspired by Kusōzu, a Japanese Buddhist series illustrating the stages of death and decomposition of a corpse from the 14th to 18th centuries. The Chōsō (脹ちょう相そう?) is the first stage, symbolizing swelling.
- According to the official guide:
- Choso deeply cherishes his brothers.
- He harbors intense hatred toward Noritoshi Kamo, his creator.
- During the Shibuya Incident, he was less motivated as he was ready to cooperate with the Curses, but not to the point of risking his life to seal Satoru Gojo.
- The blood of his younger brothers, Eso and Kechizu, shares the same toxicity as his. However, Yuji, as Sukuna’s vessel, resists the poisons and can thus tolerate their exposure. For others, contact with their blood, notably via the Piercing Blood attack, would be painful.
- Gege Akutami created Choso and his brothers to explore brotherly bonds, a theme he wanted to integrate into his story.
- Choso ranked 7th in the manga’s second popularity poll with 4,757 votes.
