Who is Min Byung-Gyu in Solo Leveling?

Min Byung-Gyu was a Korean S-rank healer and a close friend of Baek Yoonho.

Appearance

Byung-Gyu was a slim young man with spiky black hair, fair skin, and black eyes. At his first appearance, he wore a black coat over a white shirt and black pants. During the fourth raid on Jeju Island, he wore blue-black armor, a gray hoodie, a grimoire attached to his right waist, and a brown-gold mace.

In his shadow form, Byung-Gyu had bright blue skin, wore a tattered black hooded cloak, had empty white eyes, and held a teal blue grimoire in his right hand.

Personality

Byung-Gyu was a friendly and compassionate man, deeply opposed to violence. He took early retirement and considered a normal civilian life as a Korean history teacher before the government launched the fourth mission on Jeju Island. Despite his hatred of combat, he willingly participated in the raid, driven by a strong sense of duty.

History

Japanese Crisis Arc

Despite perfect health, Byung-Gyu chose to retire from hunting. His retirement was linked to the tragedies on Jeju Island, where he participated in three unsuccessful raids. The loss of Eunseok deeply affected him. One year before the Double Dungeon incident, he joined the third raid with Eunseok and Baek Yoonho. The raid’s failure and Eunseok’s death traumatized him enough to seek another path.

Demon Castle Return Arc

At Japan’s request, Byung-Gyu traveled to the country to advise on Jeju raids. He discovered ants rapidly evolving, developing wings, threatening neighboring countries. He informed Baek Yoonho of the situation.

Five days before the fourth raid, Byung-Gyu informed Baek of his intent to become a history teacher and his refusal to return to the island.

Jeju Island Arc

Despite his decision, Byung-Gyu ultimately joined the fourth raid team. He supported his teammates by granting bonuses and healing them quickly.

After the Ant Queen’s elimination, the Ant King violently attacked, severely injuring each member. Byung-Gyu activated his Disguise skill to heal them but was spotted and attacked from behind. He shouted to Baek to flee before being killed instantly and absorbed by the King.

After the Ant King’s death, Jinwoo revived Byung-Gyu in shadow form to heal Cha Hae-In, who was gravely injured. Once saved, Jinwoo agreed to Baek’s request to let Byung-Gyu rest in peace, ending his extraction and allowing his soul to fade.

Ahjin Guild Arc

Soon after the fourth raid, Cha Hae-In had a vision where Byung-Gyu’s spirit warned her against Jinwoo’s powers. She passed this warning to Jinwoo, who understood he needed to seek the source of his powers rather than just get stronger.

Ragnarök

Thanks to Jinwoo’s time reset via the Reincarnation Cup, Byung-Gyu’s death was undone. In this new timeline, he became a history teacher, then a doctor, marrying Oh Seonjoo. Though he lost his hunter memories, he sometimes had nightmares of being killed by a giant ant.

Two years after the Great Cataclysm, Byung-Gyu, in his sixties, worked as a doctor and evaluator at the Hunter Association. He studied star dust and its effects on humans, being the country's only expert.

During a reevaluation of Suho, Beru was summoned. Seeing the ant, Byung-Gyu nearly panicked. Beru recognized the doctor, feeling a familial bond, and granted him his protection.

Although he could not regain all his S-rank healer powers, now integrated into his essence, his blessing allowed him to awaken as a C-rank healer. Despite this, he chose not to join a guild nor become a hunter again, preferring to dedicate himself to research on star dust.

Abilities

As an S-rank healer, Byung-Gyu mastered healing magic, capable of quickly curing even severe wounds. He also claimed to possess A-rank combat skills.

• Healing Magic: He could instantly restore allies like Baek and Ma Dongwook after poisoning, regenerate Ma's torn limbs, and save Cha Hae-In near death—a feat even Jinwoo could not achieve with potions.
• Buff Magic: Using his grimoire, he enhanced the stats of his hunter companions.
• Disguise: Byung-Gyu could blend into his environment, becoming invisible physically and magically. However, he could not move under this effect, making him vulnerable if detected.
