Who is Perona in One Piece?

Who is Perona in One Piece?

Perona, known by the nickname "Ghost Princess" due to her extraordinary powers, was the commander of the Wild Zombies as well as the commander of the Zombie ambush on Thriller Bark, before Gecko Moria's defeat.

She held a key role among the antagonists during the Thriller Bark arc, being part of the group called the Mysterious Quartet alongside Doctor Hogback, Absalom, and Gecko Moria.

After a two-year timeskip, Perona became a valuable ally of the Straw Hat crew. She notably assisted Roronoa Zoro on Dracule Mihawk’s island, facilitating their departure from the Sabaody Archipelago.

Appearance

In her childhood, Perona displayed a style similar to her adult one: the same umbrella, crown, and hairstyle, but she wore a simple pink dress with a small black bow at the neck and small red boots. She was accompanied by a ghostly plush and a teddy bear, Kumaé, similar to Kumacy.

In a flashback from ten years ago, although her crown is visible, her outfit looks more childlike, reinforcing her youthful image.

Before the Time Skip

Before the timeskip, Perona displayed a distinctive look: her large black eyes were accentuated by long lower lashes, and her feet were often turned inward. Her style resembled Gothic Lolita with clothes mixing black, dark red, and white. Her long pink hair was styled into two pigtails adorned with black and white elastics, topped with a crown dotted with spikes and a cross. She wore a miniskirt, tights, and red boots, accompanied by a dark red umbrella with shadowy patterns. Her makeup was marked by bright lipstick and pronounced eyeliner.

After the Time Skip

Two years later, she is shown on the Sabaody Archipelago wearing a long black and white strapless dress, heeled boots, and a tall top hat decorated with a crown of white flowers. On her left forearm, a pink bat-shaped tattoo along with a watch and pink nail polish completes her style. Her hairstyle evolves into several spiral braids on the back of her head. Perona appears more mature, confident, and less childish. During her reunion with Mihawk, she wears a straw hat, a white shirt, a loose black tie, and a black skirt decorated with flowers, still accompanied by her teddy bear and watch.

Personality

Perona is confident in the effectiveness of her powers granted by her Devil Fruit. She was surprised when Usopp resisted her attacks, which was unprecedented for her. She hates being contradicted and dislikes disobedience. However, her loyalty to Gecko Moria remains evident, considering him a protective figure—she cried when she learned of his presumed disappearance. Despite this, she tried to flee Thriller Bark when she believed Oars wanted to kill her.

In the manga, her speech surprises by its apparently masculine tone, contrasting with her feminine appearance. Before the timeskip, she acted like a spoiled, angry child but matured after it while retaining some childish traits, such as her attachment to her teddy bear. Though she can be harsh, Perona can also be kind, even encouraging her enemies when they are discouraged.

She only likes “cute” creatures and refuses that those who work for her be uncute in turn. Her dream is to transform all cute beings into loyal zombies. She hated Kumacy’s voice, forbidding him from speaking, although she cared for him, especially when Usopp purified him.

Perona also has a marked fear of cockroaches, panicking even at plastic models. Her gullibility makes her naive, such as when she believed Usopp was lifting a huge hammer.

Laugh Style

She has a unique laugh based on the word “Horo,” reflecting her Devil Fruit: Horo-horo-horo-horo-horo!

Relationships

Allies

Zoro: After their meeting on Kuraigana, Perona tended to his wounds and developed a relationship of trust during the two years spent with Mihawk. She helped their escape from the Sabaody Archipelago from the Marines, even showing discreet affection when seeing the Thousand Sunny depart.

Moria: Adopted and raised by Gecko Moria, she considers him a father. Despite their strong bond, she considered fleeing Thriller Bark, showing her independent character. Her sadness at the news of his “death” faded thanks to Mihawk’s reassurances.

Kumacy: Her teddy bear is a precious companion, although she forbids him to speak due to his unpleasant voice. She was affected when Usopp purified Kumacy.

Mihawk: Their relationship is special; Perona has lived in the castle of the famous swordsman since Thriller Bark. Together they watched over Zoro for two years. During the Wano arc, despite an argument because of Moria’s return, Mihawk shows protectiveness towards her, which moves her.

Enemies

Initially, Perona was opposed to the Straw Hat crew, especially Usopp, following their fight on Thriller Bark. However, after the timeskip, she became an ally, helping the crew escape the Marines.

History

Origins
Perona was adopted by Gecko Moria at a very young age and considers him her true father. She settled near him in pursuit of pleasure and amusement.

About three and a half years ago, she learned from the press about Bartholomew Kuma’s appointment among the Seven Warlords of the Sea.

Thriller Bark Arc
She made her first spectral appearance spying on the Straw Hat crew even before they landed on Thriller Bark. As a key member of the Mysterious Quartet, she surveilled, informed, and commanded her zombies. She fought several crew members, notably Usopp, against whom she met unexpected resistance.

She uses her powers to capture enemies and dreams of a kingdom populated by zombie animals obeying her. Frustrated by Usopp’s resistance against her ghosts, she fled to protect herself, but their confrontation revealed the complexity of her character.

Facing several crises on Thriller Bark, including destruction caused by Oars, she eventually recovered the island’s treasure and prepared to flee. In a battle with Usopp, she was defeated by the ingenuity of the pirate allied with his Impact Dial and an inflatable hammer.

Timeskip
After Kuma sent her to Kuraigana, she tended to Zoro and initially tried to manipulate him. They ended up helping each other, and she guided Zoro to leave the island. Later she learned that a Moria was still alive following Mihawk’s revelations.

Return to Sabaody Arc
Two years later, she helped the crew escape the Marines and informed them of threats. During the Wano arc, she learned Moria was alive and tried to join him, but Mihawk held her back, concerned for her safety.

Egghead Island Arc
She located Moria’s captivity at the Hive and offered Koby a deal for his release.
