Who is Sailor Cosmos in Sailor Moon?

The life of Usagi Tsukino is already complicated, but it becomes even more complex when a talking cat named Luna reveals to her that she is Sailor Moon.

She is a superhero destined to protect the galaxy and to find the missing princess of the Silver Millennium, the Kingdom of the Moon. In addition to fighting numerous enemies attacking Earth, Usagi must ally with the other Sailor Guardians, although some are harder to recruit as the events of Sailor Moon unfold. However, thanks to her loyalty and compassion, Sailor Moon establishes herself as the legendary heroine the world needs most.

In Sailor Moon Cosmos, the latest installment of the Sailor Moon Crystal reboot, Usagi and her friends appear to live in a time of peace when Mamoru Chiba, Usagi’s boyfriend, suddenly disappears. This disappearance is the work of Sailor Galaxia, a violent Sailor Guardian seeking to seize the Sailor Crystals of the other Senshi. Deprived of her usual allies, Usagi finds a new ally in Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon, who reveals herself to be Sailor Cosmos herself.

How did Sailor Galaxia come to power?

The greatest battle of Sailor Moon will be the defeat of Sailor Galaxia

Sailor Galaxia originates from an unknown planet, ravaged by war and cruelty. Abused by those the Senshi protected, she came to hate humanity, especially her own people. One day, she destroyed her home planet in seconds, considering its inhabitants worthless. She traveled the galaxy seeking a new home but deemed all other planets unworthy, deserving annihilation.

Guided by Wiseman, agent of Chaos, Sailor Galaxia discovered the Zero Star of Sagittarius, home of the Galactic Cauldron, the birthplace of stars. With Chaos, she formed Shadow Galactica, a group of Sailor Guardians who collaborated with her to gain power or were forced by fear. Together, they traversed the galaxy stealing Sailor Crystals and destroying planets, growing stronger as innocent Senshi fell.

After a long journey, Sailor Galaxia arrives on Earth, stealing the Gold Crystal from Mamoru Chiba as he bids farewell to Usagi at the airport. Mamoru disappears before Usagi's eyes, who initially believes he has gone to the United States. Sailor Galaxia kills Sailor Venus and Sailor Mars to retrieve their Crystals, while Sailor Aluminium Siren assassinates Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter. She even defeats the Outer Senshi despite their resistance.

During this time, Sailor Moon meets the Sailor Starlights, a group seeking their missing princess after their planet was destroyed by Galaxia. Usagi realizes that Sailor Galaxia has killed Mamoru. Together, they understand that they must unite their forces to defeat Shadow Galactica and resurrect the fallen.

When does Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon appear?

A mysterious little girl from the sky

As Sailor Galaxia begins her conquest of Earth, a beam of light descends from the sky. A little girl, Chibi Chibi, lands with her umbrella and searches for someone. Using her powers, she finds Princess Kakyuu and makes Usagi’s mother believe she is her youngest daughter, a ruse to stay hidden. In this form, she seems almost ordinary, struggling to remember her past.

Later, the Sailor Starlights visit Usagi and briefly see Chibi Chibi with angel wings. Chibi Chibi reveals that she protects Princess Kakyuu, lost after her planet’s destruction. During a walk in the park, Sailor Galaxia visits Usagi in civilian clothes.

In an instant, the world around Usagi and Chibi Chibi ignites and collapses. Sailor Galaxia, smiling, relishes Sailor Moon’s suffering. Usagi cannot transform, but Chibi Chibi uses her powers to repel Galaxia.

When does Chibi Chibi become Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon?

After this event, Chibi Chibi regains her memory and can transform into Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon. Accompanied by Sailor Kakyuu and the Sailor Starlights, she joins Sailor Moon to conquer the Zero Star of Sagittarius and confront Sailor Galaxia. Their journey is long and fraught with obstacles. At the River of the Desert of Oblivion, they meet the twin Sailors Lethe and Mnemosyne, forced to serve Shadow Galactica after their planets’ destruction.

Sailor Lethe tries to kill Usagi, but her sister prevents it, hoping for the conflict’s end. As the twins seem about to join the heroes, they are killed by Sailor Phi alongside the Sailor Starlights. Princess Kakyuu later dies facing Sailor Chi and Sailor Phi, a shock to the remaining heroes including Sailor Chibi Moon.

Who really is Sailor Cosmos?

Sailor Moon, the hope of the future

Sailor Chibi Moon does not fight alongside Sailor Moon during the attack of the Inner and Outer Senshi clones; she instead tries to convince Sailor Chibi Moon to tell Usagi that despite the pain of battle, she must hold on. Through her grief, Sailor Chibi Moon gains the upper hand and protects Usagi in her final confrontation with Sailor Galaxia.

As during their meeting in the park, Sailor Galaxia provokes Sailor Moon, attempting to exploit her emotions and loyalty. For Galaxia, only she matters; she does not hesitate to kill her disciples and plans to betray Chaos once she is powerful enough.

Unfortunately for her, her master foresees her betrayal. As Chaos grows before their eyes, Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon sheds her disguise and reveals her true identity: Sailor Cosmos, the future version of Sailor Moon.

Sailor Cosmos comes from a future where Chaos became Sailor Chaos, spreading destruction and death. She has lost hope and focuses on her past, especially her younger self. In her Chibi Chibi form, she comes from the future to convince her younger self to destroy not only Chaos but also the Galactic Cauldron.

In the Sailor Moon universe, the Galactic Cauldron is the cradle of stars and allows the universe to be reborn, notably by resurrecting the Sailor Guardians. Sailor Moon refuses her future self’s request, affirming she will save the cycle of life without destroying the Cauldron.

Using the power of all Sailor Crystals, Sailor Moon plunges into the Galactic Cauldron, disappearing along with Chaos. This act weakens Chaos, but Sailor Cosmos knows it will return. Sailor Moon’s actions restore hope to Sailor Cosmos, who returns to the future, full of gratitude.
