Driven by an unquenchable thirst for battle, Zodd is fueled by his ancient rivalry against the Skull Knight. His unwavering quest to seek the “strongest” leads him to closely ally with Griffith, serving loyally as one of the elite warriors within the reclaimed Hawk Brigade.

Psychological Profile and Fighting Philosophy

Fearless and unyielding, Zodd dedicates his existence to the harsh toil of combat. His constant thirst for worthy opponents makes him an agent of chaos measured by thousands of victims. His brutality is uncompromising, even against significantly weaker adversaries. Yet, his true purpose is the search for the “strongest,” a perpetual quest for the ultimate confrontation.

Despite his relentless appearance, Zodd stands out with an atypical honor code among apostles: he rejects needless cruelty, takes no pleasure in torture or abuses on the weak. His deep sorrow stems from his supremacy, as no human truly challenges him. Survivors who resist his assault earn his respect, notably Guts and the Skull Knight, whom he regards as exceptional rivals.

Timeline and Key Events

Golden Age Arc

“If you are a true ally, beware… When his ambition collapses, death will inevitably strike! An inescapable fate.”
Tragic premonition by Zodd before the Eclipse.

For over 300 years, Zodd is nicknamed “Nosferatu,” an immortal divine warrior who sporadically appears to spread terror on battlefields. Initially serving the Tudor Empire during the century-long war against Midland, he meets Guts defending a key fortress. After a memorable duel where Guts inflicts a rare wound, Zodd, exalted, reveals his true form ready for fierce combat.

Despite overwhelming physical superiority, Zodd is interrupted as he prepares to kill Guts by reinforcements sent by Griffith. Following this clash, Zodd recognizes in Griffith the power embodied by the “Egg of the King” and, impressed, postpones his duel with Guts, anticipating an inevitable death tied to the White Hawk’s troubled fate.

During the Battle of Doldrey, aware of Guts’s fragility, Zodd throws him his broken sword to aid him, signaling his anticipation of the impending Eclipse. Later, he ends the atrocities of Apostle Wyald to preserve Griffith’s will, confirming his allegiance to the Hawk’s vision.

During the Fifth Eclipse, Zodd stays away from the massacre but fights and is temporarily subdued by the Skull Knight, showing the deep respect he holds for his unique rivals before letting Guts and survivors escape.

Conviction Arc

Two years after the Eclipse, having eliminated hundreds of mercenaries, Zodd shows boredom with too-weak opponents, finding interest only in opposing the Skull Knight or Guts. Shortly after, warned by a mysterious vision, he travels to Albion where he reunites with the regenerated Griffith, bowing loyally to his new master and annihilating enemy forces.

Millennium Empire Arc

During dramatic confrontations, Zodd intervenes to defend Griffith and challenges Guts, engaging in battle on equal footing before Griffith interrupts the duel. Clad in formidable armor, Zodd leads the reawakened Hawk troops in battles against the Kushan invader and his apostles, notably helping eliminate the witch Flora.

Later, he observes Guts’s growing strength in Berserker armor while overseeing fights against Kushan forces, temporarily cooperating with Guts to topple Emperor Ganishka, merging their power despite rivalry to defeat this formidable foe.

In the decisive battle against the reincarnated Ganishka, Zodd carries Griffith into the heart of combat and witnesses the climax of the Great Wave of the Astral World.

Fantasia Arc

In the Falconia epic, Zodd is in the front line against the Jötnar invasion, fiercely fighting a giant hydra while allies provide crucial support. Later, he intercepts Guts during an attempted attack on Griffith, engaging in a new duel with the Black Swordsman before joining the Hawk’s stronghold for future confrontations.

Exceptional Skills and Powers

Mastery of Bladed Weapons

With centuries of experience, Zodd skillfully wields a variety of weapons, preferring two-handed greatswords and axes. In combat, he adapts instantly, abandoning damaged weapons to exploit new ones with formidable efficiency.

Superhuman Strength

Zodd displays colossal strength, easily overwhelming ordinary apostles and being one of the few to survive repeated duels with the Skull Knight. In his apostle form, he can block blows with his horns and claws, withstand arrows and projectiles thanks to his tough skin, and destroy concrete and stone with a single powerful blow. His power lets him hurl armored Guts across an entire battlefield and pulverize foes and mounts with one strike.

Durability and Regeneration

He possesses exceptional resilience, able to endure devastating lightning and extreme pain without weakening. When gravely injured, Zodd can regenerate almost instantly, even reattaching severed limbs to quickly return to battle. However, some metaphysical injuries, such as the loss of his horn, cannot be healed by this ability.

Flight

In his released form, Zodd spreads powerful wings granting him remarkable aerial mobility, allowing him to strike with increased speed and ferocity.

Additional Information and Trivia

  • According to official Berserk data, Zodd measures about 220 cm (7’3”) and weighs 165 kg (364 lbs) in human form, and grows to 350 cm (11’5”) and 1001 kg (2207 lbs) in his released form (though these figures should be taken cautiously).
  • The first English voice actor for Zodd is believed to be Peter Lurie, not David Brimmer as often assumed, notably in the video game “Sword of the Berserk: Guts’ Rage.”
