All Might

All Might

Toshinori Yagi, known as All Might, is the deuteragonist of the manga My Hero Academia. Toshinori is the first and most powerful hero and the "symbol of peace" who inspired a whole generation of heroes, including Izuku Midoriya, to whom he passed the torch of the One for All. He is known for his cheerful and smiling attitude and his public image as the undisputed No. 1 Hero, but his time for heroism is getting shorter and shorter, a fact known only by Izuku Midoriya.

Apparence

In his powerful form, Toshinori is a very tall man with an equally muscular and well-defined physique, his design resembling a typical Western comic book superhero. He has short blond hair, swept back, with two distinct tufts above his head, slightly tilted to either side, which often casts a dark shadow over his face, hiding all but his bright blue eyes.

Toshinori's golden age hero costume consisted of a tight blue bodysuit adorned with a red symbol that looks a bit like a "Y", designed with a white diamond in the center, with white lines connected to it tracing from his chest to his shoulders, the lines adorned with the aforementioned red symbol. The symbol appeared to have wings on the side that ran from the top of his torso before ending around his back, on which was a similar red and white pattern absent from the white diamond. Large white spots lined with red covered each side of his hips before ending at the bottom of his thighs, and he wore a gold belt with a silver buckle with red eyes. His forearm sleeves were colored gold and each had white lines covered with blue accents on his wrists, and had pointed fins on the sides of his arms, his feet were covered with gold boots down to his shins adorned with white and red accents.

MY HERO ACADEMIA

In his "true form", after suffering permanent damage from All For One, Toshinori's declining health has reduced him to a very skinny man with sharp, angular features and long limbs, a long neck, and absent eyebrows. He has a large scar that covers most of the left side of his chest, and it is not uncommon for him to spit blood from his mouth when excited or surprised. He usually wears loose clothing to accommodate the change in body mass between forms, but after Toshinori's tenure as a hero ended, he begins to wear clothes that match in his actual form, as he no longer needs large clothes that match his muscular form. Despite his injuries, All Might is still muscular but due to his lean body his muscles are not visible but are still there.

At the beginning of his career, Toshinori was a lean but fit young man. In his powerful form, his facial features were noticeably softer. In his normal, powerful form, he did not have shadowed eyes on his face, completely showing his white sclera while retaining the deep blue iridescence of his eyes, perhaps showing that he was not a shell of his former self.

Personality

The hero character of All Might seems to be derived from the stereotypes of comic book superheroes: colorful and filled with dramatic flair. Always sporting a giant smile, All Might displays a bright, charismatic and welcoming attitude, able to inspire others as well as help them feel safe and hopeful. He is extremely friendly due to his popularity and years in the spotlight, always taking his time to interact with fans. Since his time in the U.S., All Might has adopted some English phrases when he speaks but most importantly he uses the names of the U.S. states in his attacks.

Once All Might returns to his true form, however, he becomes less energetic and more serious, generally taking a softer stance so as not to draw much attention to himself, in direct contrast to the grandiosity of his hero identity. In this form, he often vomits blood as an indicator of his fragile health, although this can happen if he is quite surprised or amused. Two personality traits that always seem to be present on him, no matter what form All Might currently takes, are his optimism and sensitivity.

Since his youth, All Might had always had a single, but weighty goal in his mind: to become a pillar of hope that people could always count on during hard times. Indeed, after obtaining One For All from his master, Nana Shimura, in addition to inheriting his habit of smiling at all times, All Might rose to become not only a hero, but a legend, thanks to his seemingly endless skill and charisma. No matter who or what he faced, All Might would stand triumphantly in the end every time, inspiring the world and sending fear into the hearts of villains everywhere.

Unfortunately for All Might, the injuries to his body were beginning to take their toll. Despite the concern and warnings of some of his close associates, All Might's determination to keep society safe from evil kept him from giving up his role as a symbol of peace. His smile, once a gesture that served to calm others, began to become a way for All Might to hide his fears and insecurities from the general population. Over time, All Might began to forget some of the basic principles of heroism, until Izuku Midoriya, in a brave attempt to save a fellow student from a villain's attack despite his lack of power, rekindled his heroic spirit and taught him that something can always be done to fight injustice.

Izuku compared All Might's personality to their mentor Gran Torino, since both apparently often play dumb. All Might is actually more intelligent and insightful than his image suggests, even if he is sometimes overwhelmed by his students. He struggles both as a teacher of Class 1-A and as Izuku's mentor due to his lack of experience, requiring scripts in order to convey his lessons. All Might's other teacher, Shota Aizawa, sometimes calls him an idiot because of this while Gran Torino believes that all of his strength and fame has not translated well into instructing or training others, especially since he has never had trouble learning more about the One For All.

All Might always prioritizes the lives of others over his own, considering them his responsibility, whether they are civilians or other heroes. Yet, All Might is acutely aware that saving everyone on Earth is an impossible task, but he always does his best or even more to minimize as many casualties as possible. While All Might is seen smiling, laughing, and being cheerful most of the time, he is extremely protective of his students, showing a very rare case of rage if they are in danger. He is willing to go above and beyond for their safety, making sure to ease their concerns with his trademark smile.

All Might has a fatherly attitude towards his students (his successor Izuku, in particular) and takes pride in helping their development as future heroes, being quick to give encouraging advice and celebrate their accomplishments, but he's also not afraid to push them to go further, even if he ends up going a bit too far. All Might has a habit of adding "young" to his students' last names whenever he speaks aloud or thinks of himself (e.g., "Young Midoriya").

In a fit of irony, however, during the End of Term Examination Arc, of all the teachers, he is, by far, the most ruthless. His outright bullying was, in Izuku's opinion, similar to Stain's. When Katsuki said that he would rather lose than ask Izuku for help, he was more than willing to force Katsuki to lose. He also hit Katsuki hard enough to make him vomit, showing that he won't hold back and is willing to hurt his student if it means they will pass the exams correctly. He even went as far as breaking Izuku and Katsuki's bones, as well as crushing them under his boot (which earned him a severe reprimand from Recovery Girl).

All Might

Skills and Competencies

Overall Capabilities: All Might was recognized as the strongest hero in the world. He was the "symbol of peace" and such a deterrent to crime that villains were largely deterred by his presence in society. He was able to defeat All For One, an extremely dangerous villain who once ruled all of Japan long ago, and is revered as the most powerful villain in Japan, and he defeated him twice, he was the only One For All user who was able to win against him. Despite his victory, All Might suffered a horrible injury at the hands of All For One that limited his maximum power in the future.

Even after his alter's power was limited by his injuries, All Might's strength and speed were unmatched although he was only able to manifest it for a limited time. This time period became shorter and shorter after he passed his alter to Izuku. Despite this, All Might could still defeat villains himself while normal hero groups could not. Pushing his power beyond its reasonable limits, All Might defeated Brainless, created specifically to kill him, with over 300 hits. Izuku and Katsuki Bakugo, part of the 1-A class elites, were completely dominated by All Might in their fight. All Might carried high density weights in this battle and was still strong and fast enough to effortlessly overpower his two young charges. Forced to once again break the limiter placed on his alter, All Might defeated All For One using his remaining power.

Although he is unable to maintain his hero form for more than a moment after his final battle with All For One, All Might still retains keen intuition and sharp reflexes, which has helped him hone his hero skills since acquiring his powers. This is shown in his observations regarding the use of Izuku from the One For All, and the fact that he was able to catch one of Mei Hatsume's "babies" from behind with minimal effort in his real form. Despite his physique in his real form, he is actually quite capable physically, but is not as effective compared to when he is in his hero form.

Trained Muscles: Using One For All requires the user to have strong muscles, as One For All is hard to handle and could cause the destruction of the user's body if they do not have the necessary strength in their body. Gran Torino said that All Might, in particular, had a strong body that allowed him to master One For All much faster than most users.

Indomitable Spirit: All Might's will is clear in almost everything he does as a hero. He is known for saving people with a smile and his slogan "The cavalry has arrived", two facets of him that made him the symbol of peace. At the height of his battle against Brainless, All Might remembers his determination to be the Symbol of Peace, and his resolve allows him to exceed 100% of his power to finally defeat the artificial human. Another standout performance featuring All Might's resolve was during his final confrontation with All For One. One of All For One's main strategies in their fight was to wear All Might down psychologically, such as taunting All Might by mentioning his former mentor and predecessor, Nana, and revealing that Tomura Shigaraki is his grandson. The first taunt enraged All Might, while Tomura's relationship with Nana greatly despaired him. However, despite the guerrilla warfare employed by All For One, All Might remembered Nana's teachings on heroism, and restored his will, allowing the weakened hero to gather some of his remaining power to continue fighting. Worn out of his muscular form and facing certain defeat at the hands of an almost unscathed All For One, All Might was still able to channel what remained of the One For All to defeat All For One in one strike.

One For All: Transferred from Nana Shimura, Toshinori's alter has allowed her to store an enormous amount of raw strength, which has allowed her to greatly enhance all of her physical abilities to a superhuman level. The result is incredible levels of strength, speed, agility and stamina.

All Might was so proficient with One For All that he was widely known as the most powerful person in the world. However, most of the feats he performed were before he began the process of transferring One For All to Izuku, so the fullest extent of his abilities are partially unknown.

Immense Strength: All Might's most distinguishing feature was his unlimited levels of super strength. A single punch from All Might could not only defeat a villain, but completely change the weather afterwards. He also has the power to completely destroy several buildings with the wind pressure he creates. Although severely weakened since his first encounter with Izuku, All Might's sheer overwhelming force is still comparable to that of a nuclear device. He literally defeated Brainless' Shock Absorption, forced Izuku and Katsuki to flee rather than continue to fight him head-on, and faced All For One's attacks and nullified their highly destructive power with brute strength alone. After defeating Brainless, All Might himself admitted that, compared to his golden age in which he could have defeated Nomu with 5 moves, it took over 300 moves to defeat the creature. This is another testament to All Might's weakened state.
Immense Speed: In conjunction with his immense level of physical strength, All Might possesses an equally impressive level of speed. When he arrived at the SCA, All Might moved a remarkable distance from the door and simultaneously neutralized the villains in the blink of an eye. Tomura even says that he was completely unable to keep up with his movements even though he was slower than he once was. All Might was also able to quickly defeat several Nomus and travel 5 kilometers from the supervillain alliance bar, to All For One's location at the Nomus factory, all within 30 seconds after the Nomus were teleported by All For One himself. However, according to All For One, this was actually much slower than All Might was able to accomplish in its golden age.
Immense Resistance: All Might had extreme resistance, almost to the point of being completely invulnerable to attacks. He suffered no life-threatening damage in his battle with Brainless and endured point-blank blasts from Katsuki without showing any signs of injury. All Might was even able to survive All For One's enhanced air cannon, a technique that can cause catastrophic city-wide damage if mixed with many other alters, and appeared virtually unscathed with only minor scratches.
Immense Stamina: In his early years, it was noted that All Might was never exhausted, even when fighting multiple villains. The only time All Might showed up panting and out of breath was against All For One and Brainless, and those instances were solely due to the injury he received 6 years earlier which also limited All Might to maximum use of One For All.

All Might

History

Toshinori was born without an alter during a time when evil was rampant due to the influence of All For One. The crime rate was on the rise because the citizens had no heroes to believe in.

During his teenage years, Toshinori met Nana Shimura who was like a mother figure to him. He told Nana that he wanted to create a world where everyone could smile and live happily. For this to happen, the world needed a "Symbol of Peace" to inspire a new era of harmony. Toshinori believed that he could become the pillar that inspires people everywhere.

Nana passed One For All to Toshinori, making him the eighth torchbearer of this power. With this incredible power comes the danger of facing All For One. Finally, All For One tracked them down and attacked. Nana sacrificed herself so that Toshinori could live. At 18, he could only watch his master give his life against the supreme evil of All For One.

As a promise to his close friend Nana, Gran Torino trained Toshinori in his place. Toshinori's body was strong enough to use One For All 100% from the beginning of the training. Gran Torino mainly focused on teaching Toshinori how to fight properly. He was also a student at Yuei where Gran Torino was his main teacher. However, Toshinori was distraught after the death of his master and was unable to train to his full potential.

Thoughts of revenge plagued Toshinori's mind and he wanted to avenge Nana, whom he saw as a true hero. Gran Torino ordered Toshinori to train in the United States after graduation so that All For One could not reach him. He reminded Toshinori why Nana sacrificed herself and restored her determination. That spring, Toshinori left Yuei and prepared to cross the ocean. Before he left, Toshinori remembered his master's characteristic smile. He combed his hair and put on what would become his own signature smile for the first time as All Might.

Eventually, Toshinori returned to his homeland and his meteoric rise would only continue through the Bronze, Silver and Gold Ages of his career. Becoming the Symbol of Peace and the Number 1 Hero of the world. All Might reached the pinnacle of dreams and inspired a new era of heroes where the country finally experienced peace. Japan's crime rate dropped to less than 6% due to All Might's presence, putting it in an era of peace. However, the looming threat of All For One was still present.

All Might took on a new partner, a fan who could see the future named Sir Nighteye. He would act as the brains of All Might's operations while Hero No. 1 operated at the height of his career. For many years, their partnership worked well. Finally, fate caught up with him and All Might was once again confronted by All For One.

The Symbol of Peace became the first torchbearer to defeat All For One, completely crushing his reign. This came at the cost of severe injuries, as All Might's stomach was lost and his respiratory system was irreparably damaged. This created a limit on how long All Might could use One For All, reducing his ability to be the symbol of peace.

Due to his injuries and condition, Sir Nighteye begged All Might to retire, as he did not want All Might to push himself to the brink of death, but he refused. Nezu agreed with Sir Nighteye and told All Might that he could look for a successor to the One For All in Yuei, an idea that Sir Nighteye considered the best option. Toshinori agreed that the symbol of peace would need a successor, but refused to resign in case new villains showed up.

All Might asked who would be the peace symbol until he found that successor. Even if All For One was gone, another villain like him would eventually appear. Sir Nighteye threatened to stop helping if All Might continued his reign as Hero No. 1. He even uses his Foresight alter to warn All Might of his impending death. He tells him that in six to seven years, he will face a villain and be headed for a horrible death. All Might ignored Nighteye's warning and they dissolved their partnership completely.

In order to raise a good successor, All Might enlisted as a teacher in Yuei five years later. He spoke with Nezu about a potential replacement, and the director thought that Mirio Togata, one of Yuei's students, would make a suitable successor to One For All.
