Hinata

Originally an uneducated peasant girl living in a remote mountain village, she develops into a well-adapted warrior upon joining the Falcon Band and greatly aids in the group's legendary successes during the Hundred Years War. After Guts' departure and Griffith's subsequent imprisonment, she is forced to assume the position of leader of the group, managing to prevent the complete annihilation of the Falcon Band and rescue Griffith from the Renaissance Tower. Crippled by his horrific year-long torture and demoralized by his fall from grace, Griffith finally invokes the Eclipse, in which he is reborn as the fifthFemto, a member of God Hand, rapes Casca to spite Guts. Having physically survived the ordeal, she regresses into a childish and largely mute amnesiac.

Casca

Guts and his newly formed travel team are currently preoccupied with restoring his fragmented mind to Elfhelm .

Personality

Prior to the events of the fifth Eclipse, Casca proves to be a determined and capable leader within the Falcon Gang who earns the respect of her fellow soldiers. Her leadership is so great that she is able to rally the group behind her in their moment of greatest peril and prevent the complete annihilation of the fugitive group for a year after Griffith's imprisonment. She encourages morale among the group's base, who in turn affectionately call her "Big Sis." Even in the midst of the Eclipse, Casca doesn't allow the group members to panic, ordering them to assume the formation and contribute what they can.

Casca's hardened appearance and austere demeanor can be seen as unfeminine, prompting Judeau's first observation that she "gave up being a woman to become a mercenary." In reality, her femininity is an integral part of her identity; she wears men's clothing for its practicality in battle, rather than because of any inherent desire to do so on her part. Sometimes her status as a woman is the source of her disturbance, though she masks such doubts with a stern exterior, lashing out with physical violence in moments of vulnerability. Beneath this guarded exterior, however, Casca longs to be accepted as both a warrior and a woman, which is what she originally desires from Griffith.

Guts

Her loyalty and devotion to Griffith instills in her a desire for strength, wanting to serve as his capable sword in the pursuit of his dream. For this reason, she initially harbors resentment towards Guts, jealous of the swordsman's superior importance to her idolized leader. Eventually, Casca comes to recognize the unrequited nature of her admiration for Griffith, while also developing an equal affection for Guts, overcoming her dependence on Griffith's dream. Notably, when Griffith decides to fight Guts in an attempt to prevent him from leaving the group, Casca intervenes, questioning her leader's defiance - an action Judeau notes she would never have taken before, as she took Griffith's will as gospel. Later, she begins to fall in love with the swordsman after he recognizes her as both a capable warrior and a woman, cultivating a relationship based on mutual honesty rather than one-sided reverence.

Casca's rape by Femto during the eclipse inflicts severe psychological trauma on her, causing her to regress to a largely mute infantile state in which she is unable to truly think or feel. Although capable of a primitive form of empathy, she is left unable to process people's feelings beyond immediate situations; however, she displays a maternal affection for her demon child and Moonlight Boy, becoming distressed when they suddenly disappear or are in danger. In her fragmented form, Casca fondly remembers her days as a Falcon, though deeper in her psyche, her mental imagery becomes distinctly hostile and revolting - a defense mechanism protecting her most repressed memory fragment.

Background

Casca was born the youngest of six children in a remote mountain village. As a girl of low birth, hardships such as famine and potential kidnappings were a normal fact of peasant life for Casca, giving her a pessimistic view of the world. When she was twelve, her parents sent her to work as a maid for an apparently courteous nobleman.

On the way to the castle, however, the nobleman revealed his lustful intentions, chasing Casca from their carriage and pinning her down to rape her. Just as she begins to submit to her attacker, Griffith appeared on horseback and sliced off the nobleman's ear, expressing his disdain for the man's sense of entitlement and superiority. Rather than eliminate the pedophile nobleman himself, Griffith handed Casca his sword, telling her to wield it if she had anything to protect. As the nobleman lunged for her neck, Casca took the sword and placed it in line with her attacker's chest, piercing and killing him. Filled with unease at her first kill, she was calmed by Griffith and fascinated by the wondrous nature of her savior from then on. With her attacker dead and her chances of being reintegrated into her village slim, she decided to join Griffith's hawk gang, having now learned to defend herself instead of simply enduring.

History

Golden Age Arch

Meet the guts

Years later, now the second most formidable warrior in the Falcon's band and a top unit commander within the band, Casca confronts Guts under Griffith's command when the swordsman defends against an ambush led by Corkus. She and Guts fight until Guts knocks her off her horse, later realizing that he is fighting a woman. When Guts dominates and prepares to put an end to Casca, Griffith intervenes, neutralizes the swordsman, then takes him back to the group's camp. He orders Casca to sleep naked with an exsanguinated Guts for two days to provide warmth for the swordsman. Although Casca prevents the vengeful members of the group from killing Guts after he recovers, she expresses no favor for the swordsman; instead, she becomes envious of him due to Griffith's strong desire and eventual enlistment of the swordsman in the Falcon's gang.

Years of glory

Within three years, the Band of the Falcon, having gained the trust and approval of the King of Midland , is enlisted by Midland in its age-old war against Tudor. During a battle between the Falcon Band and Tudor's Blue Whale Knights, Casca silently suffers from menstruation while fighting Adon Coborlwitz, eventually fainting and falling off a cliff. Although Guts manages to save her, he is knocked off his horse by Adon and the two are sent tumbling into the river below. Guts manages to pull Casca out of the cold water and into a nearby cave. Realizing that a fire would only alert the Blue Whale Knights to their position, Guts removes Casca's soaked clothes and warms her instead with his own body heat.

When the rain finally stops, Casca wakes up and immediately attacks Guts, troubled by his feminine shortcomings as a soldier. Subduing and tiring her, Guts asks why she became a mercenary to begin with, to which she explains the reason for her idolatry and devotion to Griffith as her sworn sword, as well as the discordant effect her leader's desire for Guts. had on her. Their conversation is interrupted by the movement of Tudor troops near their location; realizing that the enemy forces would soon return to the cave, they decide to leave after sunset.

After the two are found by Adon and his soldiers, Guts decides to buy time for Casca to return to the group and, in a remarkable act of survival, manages to defeat all the mercenaries of the Hundred Man Tudor Legion. After being found by the group and cared for in their camp, Casca learns of his growing detachment from the mercenaries' collective "campfire of dreams" and his intention to finally leave the group, much to his dismay.

Later, at the Battle of Doldrey, Casca manages to defeat Adon in a perilous rematch and leads the successful retaking of the fortress from within. For their successful recapture of Doldrey, the Band of the Falcon is officially enrolled as the White Phoenix Knights of Midland, and its unit commanders are knighted and elevated to the peerage.

On the morning of Guts' departure from the group, Casca goes against Griffith's challenge to duel with Guts for the swordsman's freedom - a notable departure from his usual unquestioning adherence to Griffith's will. Having developed affection for Guts, her heart is torn after Guts defeats Griffith, as she watches a bewildered Griffith kneel in defeat and Guts leave the group for good. Guts' departure unexpectedly forces Griffith to impulsively sleep with Princess Charlotte, resulting in the White Falcon's imprisonment for crimes against the royal family and the labeling of the Falcon gang as outlaws. With the sudden disappearance of her leader, Casca is forced to take over the leadership of the group when they are attacked by the Midland army and driven out.

Fugitive

or a year, Casca leads the Falcon Gang through its tumultuous fugitivity, often overwhelmed by the exhaustion and discouragement of her role. When Guts returns and helps repel a raid led by Silat, Casca pulls him away from the rest of the group to vent his anger for his momentous defection a year earlier. After a brief sword fight with him, she attempts suicide, deciding to leave him in charge of the group. After Guts in turn saves and comforts her, the two reconcile and continue to make love, finally acknowledging their feelings for each other and cementing their new relationship.

Saving Griffith

Casca forms a rescue team and leads Wyndham's infiltration to save Griffith. With the help of Princess Charlotte, the group manages to reach Griffith's cell on the lowest level of the Renaissance Tower. Upon finding the white falcon, they discover the horrific wounds inflicted on him during his year-long torture. Fighting their way through a wave of alert Wyndham soldiers, the rescue team is able to enter the sewers, foil an ambush by Bakiraka assassins sent to kill Griffith, and escape from Wyndham to a farm outside the city.

En route to the Midland border, the group realizes they are being pursued by the dreaded Black Dog Knights . Although their set traps fail to deter the dogs, the team eventually joins another unit of the Falcon's gang and fights off their pursuers. The leader of the Dog Apostle, Wyald , eventually transforms into his true form in his fight with Guts, attempts to rape Casca, and catches a defenseless Griffith in retaliation when Guts decisively overpowers him, revealing the full extent of the White Falcon's severity. injuries to the gang. Shortly thereafter, Zodd abruptly arrives and shockingly rips his fellow apostle in half, then delivering a message to Griffith - foreshadowing the return of the lost falcon.beherit - before flying off.

Eclipse

In the Midland frontier, the remaining members of the group accept the severity of Griffith's injuries and discuss their future. As Casca replaces his bandages, Griffith uses his weak strength to force himself on her; though initially opposed to his advance, she is overcome with pity for his weakened and fragile state and hugs him carefully as he gives in. Outside Griffith's car, Casca begs Guts to leave the group again if he is truly Griffith's friend and equal. Having gathered enough strength to commandeer his idle car, Griffith abruptly flees the area, with Guts and the mercenaries in pursuit. When Griffith destroys the car and lands in a lake, Guts and the others rush to his location, as a solar eclipse begins and ominous figures approach in the distance. As soon as Guts reaches it, the mercenaries are all taken to an alternate dimension by Griffith's crimson legacy.

Many demons are present to greet the members of the Falcon Gang, welcoming them to the nightly party called "Eclipse". Four profound entities emerge from within the dimension afterwards, presenting themselves as the hand of God and revealing the purpose of the eclipse: for Griffith to offer his comrades as a sacrifice in order to join their divine ranks, as predestined by fate. Proving to be indeed a fate, Griffith, after weighing his options as an invalid and reaffirming his dream and ambition, offers his former comrades as a sacrifice, thus triggering the unilateral branding and slaughter of the group.

Guts

A large-scale massacre of the band is initiated, with most of them being slaughtered by a flood of materialized apostles. Judeau comes to Casca's rescue on horseback as Pippin mounts a final battle against one of the demons, demanding that she survive as the leader of the group. As the two ride and fight the apostles over and over, Judeau continues to put himself in harm's way to protect Casca, suffering fatal injuries after protecting her from an apostle's whip. Severely injured, Judeau tells Casca to continue alone, but is reprimanded by the commander and told to stand down. Despite his insistence, Judeau slowly goes numb before finally succumbing to his injuries. With his death, Casca is surrounded and stripped naked by an onslaught of lustful apostles.

After all but Guts and Casca are dead, Griffith, reborn as the fifth member of God Hand Femto, immediately descends in front of a trapped Guts and beckons an apostle to bring him a captured Casca. Femto then proceeds to rape Casca in front of Guts, intending to force Guts to watch his lover beg him to look away. After Femto is finished with Casca, the Skull Knight crosses the Eclipse and is able to escape the time junction unscathed with Casca and Guts in tow.

After waking up in the cave of the blacksmith Godot, it is revealed that due to the trauma she suffered from the eclipse, Casca has repressed all of her previous memories and abilities, and is now nothing more than an infantile shell of herself. Four days later, she gives birth to herself and Guts' demon child - the baby having been tainted by Femto's violation of Casca - before he disappears into the astral world at sunrise.

Condemnation arch

Two years after Guts leaves her in Godot's cave, Casca wanders off after Erica lets her out and finds herself in the company of a prostitute named Luca , whose group is among the refugees heading to Albion . Along the way, the refugees are ambushed by would-be assassins targeting the Holy See's Inquisitor Mozgus . Casca is almost arrested when she interacts with a pleading assassin, though Luca dispels any suspicion that she is associated with the assailants. Eager to protect her from men who would take advantage of her helpless state, Luca takes Casca in and gives her the false identity of "Elaine", wrapping her face in bandages to mask her as a syphilis-infected prostitute.

Shortly after reaching Albion, her presence as a mark begins to annoy the restless spirits of the dead; her cover is blown when a cult dedicated to the goddess of flame, believing her to be a witch, organizes a ritual to marry her to their leader. Pandemonium breaks out when the pagans are possessed by the vengeful spirits of their many sacrifices and the Great Goat is transformed into a pseudo-apostle. Fortunately, after being propelled to find her after receiving a vision of her burning, Guts arrives to rescue Casca from the clutches of the Great Goat. Although Guts entrusts her safety to Isidro, Casca ends up being captured by the Knights of the Sacred Iron Chain and taken to the Tower of Conviction.

In the tower, Mozgus, after observing her sacrifice mark and denouncing her as a witch, places Casca inside an iron maiden in order to bleed her to death. Her marked presence begins to shake the spirits of the tortured dead and triggers a tidal wave of manifested spirits, which begins to sweep through and consume the living. Casca survives under the protection of her demon child, though the child expends her life force in doing so. Believing that her death will end the torrent of evil manifested in Albion, Mozgus conducts a witch trial in which he condemns her to burn at the stake. However, Isidro is able to repair his earlier blunder by freeing her from the stake. After Casca's rescue, theThe incarnation ceremony continues to run its course, causing Femto to incarnate in the form of Griffith at sunrise. Following the ensuing influx of Kushan soldiers, Guts mounts a horse with Casca in tow and rides for Godot's hut.

Millennium Falcon Bow

Back at Godot, Guts meets Griffith at the top of Sword Hill. When the swordsman attacks Griffith and is forced to fight Griffith's new protector, Nosferatu Zodd, Casca enters the fray just as Zodd re-emerges from Godot's destroyed mine and is nearly crushed by the resulting debris. As if by instinct, Griffith unintentionally protects her; paused by his unintentional act, he orders Zodd to cease his battle with Guts and leaves. With the destruction of Godot's mine, and thus a lack of safe shelter for Casca, Guts sets out in the winter with a new destination: Puck's homeland of Elfhelm, where Puck declares that Casca will be able to stay safe.

During their winter journey, Casca initially stays close to Guts, having recognized him as a protective figure. After Guts momentarily falls victim to spirit possession and nearly strangles her to death, she becomes perpetually afraid of him and begins to distance herself from his proximity. Their relationship is only further strained when the swordsman submits to his inner darkness and sexually assaults her. It is only when Farnese, Serpico and Isidro find them and accompany them on their travels that Casca begins to open up again, especially to Farnese, who acts as her guardian thereafter.

The group sets their destination for the port city of Vritannis, to acquire a ship. Casca and Farnese are then kidnapped by trolls and taken to the border kingdom of Qliphoth when the group protects the village of Enoch from a troll invasion in favor of the witch Flora, who is eventually saved by the rest of the traveling party. On the beach before entering the port city, the Skull Knight finds Guts, telling him about the Flower Storm Monarch, which can potentially repair Casca's broken mind. Soon after, Casca has her first known encounter with a mysterious "Moonlight Boy", who shows a particular interest in her and Guts.

Fantasy Bow

Another encounter with Moonlight Boy takes place on a lonely island under which the god of the sea resides. After Guts successfully defeats the deity, a group of grateful merrows escort the seahorse to the island of Skellig. On the way to the island, speculations are made about the nature of Moonlight Boy when he disappears again. Upon reaching Skellig and arriving at Elfhelm, the group rests for a night and is then escorted by Archmage Gedfring and the attendant Danan to the Flower Storm Monarch's cherry palace, where Danan transforms and reveals himself to be the very ruler the group has been seeking.

After sentencing Puck and Magnifico to a day of community service when the two's plot to overthrow her fails, Danan asks Schierke and Farnese to accompany her and Casca to the "Corridor of Dreams." Once in a room filled with mushrooms, Danan explains to Farnese and Schierke that the Corridor of Dreams ritual requires them to astral project into Casca's mind and find a solution to the incident responsible for their companion's mental state.

The two initially find Casca's dreamscape to be a series of childish doodles, representative of his current fragmented psyche. Guided by Danan's cherry blossom petals, they discover a fractured doll representing Casca's current state, and walk around collecting fragments of memory to gradually repair the shattered effigy. After climbing a miasmic mountain over which a black sun hovers, the two witches arrive at a thorny cocoon containing Casca's last memory fragment. They are briefly overwhelmed by visions and tumultuous emotions aroused by the fifth eclipse, which eventually condense into a thorn-covered heart - the last fragment. When Farnese places the heart inside the now-repaired effigy, the dream is over and Casca wakes up in the real world.

She remains in the background for much of the chaos following Kushan's attack on Vritannis. The group finally manages to board Roderick's ship, the Seahorse, and sets sail for the western sea.

Returning to her former self, Casca greets and expresses her gratitude to Farnese, Schierke, and Ivalera. She describes her broken "Elaine" state as similar to a waking dream, in which she could only observe the group's journey, unable to really think or feel; furthermore, she mentions having vague memories of her past and being unable to remember anything immediately after a visit to see Griffith in the revival tower. Danan - having telepathically contacted Guts and asked him to meet them under the great cherry tree of Elfhelm - celebrates the successful restoration of Casca's mind by granting her an elven rejuvenation, in preparation for her reunion with the person she misses. Leaving the corridor of dreams to find Guts and remembering her past with increasing clarity along the way, as soon as Casca sees Guts, she is overwhelmed by horrific memories of Griffith's ravaged body and the fifth eclipse,

After the encounter with Guts, Casca asks Danan to give her some easy-to-slip-on clothes and a sword. Danan also cuts Casca's hair for her. Casca appears in her new clothes -similar to those of the forest guardians- for everyone to see. Everyone mentions how different an impression this is from the Casca they knew. Casca reflects on how Luca and her partners are doing, hoping to thank them if they ever meet again. She then thanks Farnese for taking care of her in her regressed state as a mother or older sister would, causing Farnese to tear up.

Guts

Looking at his sword, Isidro wonders how good a fighter Casca is. In return, Casca smiles, speculating on how rusty it might be. Danan brings "veykin" golems made of straw and enchanted with a non-injurious, non-lethal incantation for Casca to practice. Casca impresses everyone with his fencing skills and easily defeats the veykins. Isidro then asks him to be his training partner. During a short training session with him, Farnese tries to reunite Casca and Guts after a conversation with Schierke and Danan.

Casca talks to Guts hidden behind a tree, while he listens. She mentions that Isidro's fighting style reminds her of Judeau. But as soon as she says Judeau's name, flashbacks of what happened to Judeau in the Eclipse flash before Casca's eyes. This causes her to experience a panic attack. Guts is concerned, shouting her name as she collapses. When Casca looks up at Guts, she sees him as a dark figure with apostles behind him and shouts out loud. Guts grimaces, watching the woman he loves become completely frightened at the mere sight of him. Guts walks away as Casca comforts herself with Farnese, who realizes she still can't see him.

Shortly after this episode, Casca is in bed and is offered a hot drink by Farnese. Casca apologizes for what happened, but Danan, Schierke and Farnese understand the state of her sanity and do not judge her. Casca starts shaking again, telling everyone that every time something reminds her of the good old days, she is suddenly taken back to the Eclipse. Just as she is about to cry thinking about "her" voice and face as a scary shadow covers her, the Flower Storm Monarch blows magic petals to help her fall asleep. Danan tells Farnese that she will be fine by letting Casca rest. But before Farnese leaves, a sleeping Casca clings to her clothes.

Capabilities

In the original Band of the Falcon, Casca is respected by her comrades as a formidable leader and warrior, who would only be surpassed by Griffith in pure skill before Guts' enlistment. Her expert fencing, sharp reflexes, natural agility, and above-average strength allow her to fight and defeat male opponents much larger than her. For a time, a sleep-deprived Casca is even able to defend herself against Bakiraka's highly skilled assassin, Silat.

Though mostly defenseless in her puerile state, she has shown flashes of herself in precarious situations; such examples include manifesting her innate agility to skillfully traverse the side of a cliff, and rediscovering her fencing to quickly dispatch a group of would-be bandit rapists, even though she hasn't practiced for years.

Once restored, it was revealed that Casca had never really forgotten her combat training. She easily took out a number of "Veykin" golems armed with shields, swords and helmets. Her prowess was well received by other warriors such as Azan, Serpico and Roderick. Isidro then begged Casca to become his training partner because of Casca's stature, which was closer to his than to Guts'. Despite using wooden weapons due to his claim that he couldn't hit as true as before, Casca was able to inflict a blow to his head.
