Apparence
Two of Kuroro's distinguishing features are his cross tattoo on his forehead and a pair of orb-shaped earrings. He is usually seen wearing a leather Trench-Coat that is unbuttoned, revealing his muscular body, the coat is printed with the cross of St. Peter on the back. Prior to the founding of the Ghost Brigade, Kuroro never wore a coat, and he did not wear his hair back. When he approached Neon Nostrad in order to steal his Nen ability, he wore a blue blazer, with his hair hanging naturally and the cross tattoo hidden behind a bandage wrapped around his forehead. His spider tattoo is located on his right arm in the 1999 anime.
Personality
Kuroro Lucifuru is a quiet, handsome young man who comes across as intelligent and charismatic. He seems to be a born leader, able to hold the Ghost Brigade together despite the volatile personalities that make it up, and is good at strategy. He always has at least two people with him, which is why Hisoka has been unable to fight him. After he admires the objects he has acquired and targeted, Kuroro sells everything. It is also stated that Kuroro likes old books.
The only people Kuroro seems to care about are his fellow Ghost Brigade members. When Kuroro reads Neon's prophecy that contains Uvôguine's death, he cries for him. Later, he orchestrates a massacre of mafia members considering it as a requiem to his fallen comrade. Moreover, he shows no fear of his own death, which he even anticipates. Senritsu said that his heartbeat sounded as if he was happy to live next to death. For Kuroro, the Ghost Brigade is more important than his own life. He once emphasized in a group meeting that the survival of the group came before the well-being of the leader. To paraphrase him, the head of the spider is just another member who can be sacrificed for the survival of the Spider.
Despite this, he is cold-blooded and an inhuman murderer, he and all the members of the squad commit crimes without the slightest remorse, such as the massacre of the Kuruta clan to get their eyes back, and the use of his Indoor Fish ability on a helpless assassin reflects his sadistic nature. There is also an implied hostility between Kuroro and Silva Zoldik, perhaps due to the entrenchment of their previous encounter and Silva's murder of a member of the brigade.
In the Dark Continent arc, we learn that Kuroro is number "0" in the Ghost Brigade (chapter 377).
Past
Very little is known about Kuroro's past except that it comes from the Shooting Star, a dumping ground inhabited by outcasts. The people who live there do not exist in any official records and the existence of the town itself is known by very few people. In the past, he formed the Ghost Brigade with six other residents of the shooting star and then left the city. Later, the brigade was joined by several members, in accordance with Kuroro's idea of a group comprising exactly 13 members, including himself. It is not known when and what are the exact circumstances of the fight between Kuroro and Silva Zoldik.
History
York Shin City Arch
Kuroro is first seen at a Ghost Brigade meeting in an abandoned area of the city on August 31. He orders the brigade to steal all of the mafia's underground auction items and to eliminate anyone in their path.
On the evening of September 1, Kuroro, Phinks, Korutopi, Bonorenof, Pakunoda and Hisoka stay in their lair, while the other seven members sneak into the building where the auction was being held and kill all the mobsters and customers there, only to find an empty safe, as the items had already been transferred to another location a few hours before their arrival. On the way back in a hot air balloon, Uvogin calls Kuroro by phone, saying that he suspects that there is a traitor in the Brigade. Kuroro reasons with him saying that there is an informer, but this person is not among them. He then tells Uvôguine and the others to cause a great disturbance to attract the Beasts of the Shadows, one of whom, the Owl nicknamed Fukuro, removed the auctioned items.
After the order, Uvoguine slaughters mobsters and four Shadow Beasts in the desert, but is captured by Kurapika soon after. Five other members of the Brigade immediately set off in pursuit until they are stopped along the way by the other Shadow Beasts. They kill all of them, except for the Owl, whom they capture and successfully obtain the auction items. Around midnight, they find the place where Uvogin is kept prisoner and free him after killing Darzolne. However, Uvogin insists on searching for the user of the chain, Kurapika, alone for revenge, which will lead to his death at the hands of Kurapika in the desert of Goruto in the early hours of September 2.
On September 3, thanks to an image of Neon Nostrad, downloaded from the Hunters' website, Kuroro finds her and approaches her, who has escaped her bodyguards to attend the underground auction against her father's wishes. After helping her into the building, he asks her for a prediction of her future, which she gladly does. Upon reading the prophecy, he cries because it mentions Uvogin's death. Near the start of the auction, he knocks Neon out with a swift blow to the back of his neck and uses it as an excuse to get to the upper floors. He then kills Mafia hitmen with ease while his other comrades slaughter the 2,000 mobsters guarding the building.
During the Ghost Brigade's retaliation attack, Kuroro is trapped in the building's basement by two elite assassins, Zeno and Silva Zoldik. Noticing that Zeno is an incredible fighter, Kuroro fights them with the intention of stealing their abilities. However, Zeno sees through his actions and manages to slam him against the wall while Silva throws two huge spheres of his aura at them, causing a loud explosion that causes everything around them to collapse. Just before the Zoldiks finish with him, Irumi Zoldik calls them and tells them that the Ten Godfathers have been eliminated in a mission whose client is Kuroro. Since their clients are dead, they stop fighting because they have no more targets. Zeno later explains that they don't kill for fun.
Kuroro then calls the other members, telling them not to touch the ambulance carrying Neon to the hospital and to continue the plan, according to which they make use of Korutopi's ability to deceive the mafia with fake corpses of five members, taking the real items and selling their copies in the underground auction carried to the 10th floor of the building. After that, Kuroro and the other members return to their hideout and celebrate their victory. The next day, September 4, Kuroro ordered the Brigade to leave YorkShin City at night, but Nobunaga insisted that they find Kurapika. In order to persuade Nobunaga, he uses Lovely Ghost Writer that he stole from Neon to make prophecies about Nobunaga and some other members, that 5 of them will die if they stay in YorkShin City in the next 2 weeks. They then intend to return to the Shooting Star to avoid this prospect, but Hisoka alters his own prophecy with his Surprise texture and manipulates the whole group into staying in YorkShin City so that they can have the chance to fight Kuroro.
Later, Kuroro is able to deduce that Kurapika is one of Neon's bodyguards, and thanks to a pair of fake scarlet eyes they sold the day before, they know that Kurapika and the other bodyguards are staying at the Beitacle Hotel, 2.5 km from the hideout. Kuroro orders Korutopi, Machi, Nobunaga, Pakunoda and Shizuku to go with him to the hotel. On the way, noticing that they are followed by 2 people, he tells Korutopi, Nobunaga and Pakunoda to go ahead while he, Machi and Shizuku stay behind. They then capture Gon and Kirua again. Meanwhile, Pakunoda and the other two are able to know the name and face of Kurapika after the capture and killing of Sukuwara.
Kuroro, Machi and Shizuku bring the two children to the hotel and meet up with Pakunoda's group in the room. He tells Pakunoda to check their memories again, but before she can reveal what she has learned about Kurapika, a power failure suddenly occurs, allowing Gon and Kirua to break free from their hold. Machi and Nobunaga then easily take them back despite the total darkness. However, when the light returns, they realize that Kuroro has been captured by Kurapika.
Phinks, Feitan and Sharnalk soon arrive at the hotel. They then receive a call from Kurapika, who tells them not to follow him, not to hurt the hostages and to give the phone to Pakunoda. He then tells Pakunoda to go to the Ringon airport alone to negotiate the terms of a hostage exchange and the other members must return to their hideout. Kuroro, who is sitting next to Kurapika in the back seat of a car, is then beaten, but he discovers that Kurapika favors his friends first, which he considers a vital weakness, so he hopes Paku and other members will come to the airport together. Indeed, Phinks, Feitan and Sharnalk try to follow Pakunoda, but Nobunaga prevents them for fear that Kuroro will be killed, leading to a quarrel between Nobunaga and Phinks. Because Machi and Shizuku agree with Nobunaga, Kurapika tells them about Senritsu's ability to detect lies, all of them return to the hideout.
When Kurapika and Pakunoda come to the airport, he binds the hearts of Kuroro and Pakunoda with Judgement Chain, forbidding them to use the Nen and communicate with the other members, and tells her to come to the exchange site with Gon and Kirua before midnight, to which she agrees. After she returns to the hideout, Paku tells the others the conditions. Phinks becomes so angry that he wants to get rid of the children, then run after Kurapika but Machi and Korutopi disagree with him. They almost start a fight with Phinks and Feitan, who thinks that they and the others are being manipulated by Kurapika, until the quarrel is interrupted by Gon. Phinks finally agrees to let Pakunoda go alone after Franklin tells him that if he continues to be stubborn, the Brigade may disintegrate.
Just before the exchange, Hisoka pops up unexpectedly and threatens to kill the children if he can't come with Pakunoda to fight Kuroro. Kurapika has no choice, and lets him go to the exchange site with them. When Kuroro is finally released, Hisoka reveals that he was never a real member of the Brigade and challenges him to a duel. Seeing this, Kuroro laughs and tells Hisoka that there is no point in fighting him now, because Judgement Chain has rendered him unable to use Nen on pain of death. Hisoka, having no interest in broken toys, lets him go. Kuroro, staying put, aims at the East in order to fulfill Neon's prophecy.
Greed Island Arch
The destination in the east, according to the prophecy is later revealed to be Greed Island, the most likely place to find an exorcist of Nen to neutralize Kurapika's chain. Kuroro is somehow able to obtain a copy of the game and recruits Hisoka to enter it instead since the game requires the use of Nen. Hisoka accepts to have the chance to fight Kuroro, once his nen is restored. An exorcist is then found and recruited by Hisoka and the other members of the Ghost Brigade, however, it is still unclear whether or not Kurapika's Judgement Chain has been removed from Kuroro's heart.
Dark Continent Arc
We find Kuroro as a floor master in the celestial tower in a fight to the death against Hisoka. He shows him the new abilities he has acquired, especially those of Sharnalk and Korutopi that they have lent him. Kuroro wins and leaves the celestial tower thinking he has killed Hisoka (but he hasn't). He then calls Sharnalk and they talk about their intention to steal "A treasure of great value" from the King of Kakin and to travel to the dark continent with it. Shortly after this telephone conversation, Sharnalk and Korutopi are killed by Hisoka.
Later Kuroro manages to board the Black Whale 1 and is seen sitting in a corner of the lowest floor. He has an ugly and sinister look on his face, probably because he knows about the murders of Sharnalk and Korutopi.
On August 9, he met Machi who suggested that he flip a coin to see who would kill Hisoka. Kuroro refuses because it is not a question of settling a conflict between members since they all agree to finish with the magician. Kuroro is then seen with the whole ghost brigade and they give an update on their unsuccessful search for Hisoka. Kuroro asks the new member Illumi to introduce himself. Then a mafia group approaches the squad and asks them to change places. Kuroro refuses at first, then complies. As they leave, Phinks points out that there must be treasures on board, but Kuroro makes Hisoka the priority of the brigade. Only after killing him can they "celebrate". The spiders disperse to look for Hisoka, but Shizuku and Bonolenov decide to form a team with Kuroro, which Kuroro accepts on the sole condition that he will be the one to finish off the magician.
Skills and competencies
Kuroro is a monstrous fighter, being the leader of the Ghost Brigade and recognized as the strongest member. He was able to fight against Silva and Zeno Zoldik, two extremely skilled assassins, at the same time, leaving no opening for the former, but he was unable to cause significant damage to either of them not being fully into his fight and wanting to steal the abilities of his opponents. In the past he survived a confrontation with Silva Zoldik, while in the present his abilities rival those of Zeno Zoldik. His fighting style is probably a combination of speed and deadly precision. His high level of intelligence helps him, making him able to exploit the enemy's weak points. He is able to kill skilled warriors with just a pen, sometimes even staying hidden with the Zetsu, thus being immune to Nen. When put in a difficult situation, he fights with a poisoned knife, whose 0.1 mg of toxin can paralyze a whale. However, he has a certain tendency to hold back when his opponent has an interesting ability, so he can steal it. Zeno said that Kuroro would have lost to him, but he adds that if he had fought seriously, the result would have been different.
Increased strength: Kuroro himself is placed seventh in the arm wrestling with the rest of the Brigade. However, his rank is excellent, as Specialization users are the weakest when using Enhancement skills. He is nonetheless able to decapitate a normal human with one hand and pierce the skull of his opponents with an ordinary pen.
Increased speed and reflexes: Kuroro was able to fight against Zeno and Silva simultaneously, to avoid and protect himself against their powerful attacks. In the 2011 anime, he disappeared and fatally collided with one of the strongest assassins hired by the mafia without the latter noticing. He gave a blow with his hand on the back of Neon Nostrad's head without anyone in the room or watching the surveillance monitors seeing a glimpse of the move. As shown in the 2011 anime, Kuroro can easily catch and throw knives in midair.
Increased Agility: Kuroro can run up the sides of buildings, and easily move horizontally from one to the other. He also skillfully dodged many of Zeno's long-range attacks.
High Intelligence: Despite his young age, Kuroro is the leader of the A-class Ghost Brigade. His plans generally go smoothly, and he has demonstrated both skill and intuition. He managed to fool the entire mafia into thinking that he and four of his comrades were dead. He managed to predict the framework of the "chain user" strategy for his revenge, but was foiled by Kurapika and Hisoka. He has complete dominion over his emotions, as demonstrated by his capture by Kurapika. In the fight against the Zoldiks, he focused on stealing Zeno's ability in the middle of the fight and leaving no opening for Silva to exploit, proving to be an effective multitasker.
Master of knife manipulation: The way he managed to injure Silva's arm with a knife is proof of his skills. In addition, he has managed to kill several skilled Nen users by wielding only a normal pen.
Nen
Kuroro is a Specialization user, like Kurapika (when his eyes turn scarlet); it is a combination of the other five types, but in a way that a normal Nen user cannot use. Kuroro's Nen ability is called Skill Hunter (The Bandit's Secret). It allows him to steal other people's Hatsu and use them as his own using a book known as the Bandit's Secret. The victim, of course, no longer has access to his ability. The theft takes place under strict conditions:
- He must witness Nen's ability with his own eyes.
- He must ask questions about the ability and be answered by the victim.
- His victim's palm must touch the handprint on the cover of the Bandit's Secret.
- All of the above must be done within one hour.
To use one of the stolen abilities, he first calls up the bandit's secret and turns to the page of the desired ability. When he uses an ability, Kuroro must go to the page and the book must remain open in his right hand; this means that he can access one chosen ability at a time. In addition, an ability disappears from the book if its former owner dies.
Zeno rightly guessed that he has to endure 4-5 trials before he can steal an ability.
Apart from that, he is a very skilled Nen user.
Technique de nen de Kuroro |
Teleportation
The ability to teleport a person from one place to another, without that person's consent. He uses it on Nobunaga when he is about to attack Hisoka, as quarrels inside the Brigade are supposed to be resolved verbally, if no solution can be found, by drawing lots.
Indoor Fish(密室 遊魚 (イ ン ド ア フ ィ ッ シ ュ) Fish Playing behind closed doors)
Materialized fish that can only survive in a completely sealed room. The fish look like skeletons and feed on human flesh. While the person is conscious, they will not feel pain or lose blood, and will remain conscious despite being mortally wounded. Once the fish disappears, the usual effects of the injury occur, killing the victim instantly. It was used for the first time, when he fought an assassin hired by Zenji.
Fun Fun Cloth (不思議で便利な大風呂敷 (ファンファンクロス), The Big Weird Practical Cloth)
An ability originally held by the Owl, a member of the shadow beasts. This cloth is materialized, and can increase or decrease in size at the will of the user. Anything covered by the cloth decreases in size until it fits in the palm of a hand. The user can have it return to its original size by leaving the bag on the floor. People can also be reduced in size in this way, without being hurt. Kuroro gets this ability when the Brigade tortured the Owl after taking him to find out how he hid the auction items they intended to steal.
Lovely Ghostwriter (天使 の 自動 筆記 (ラ ブ リ ー ゴ ー ス ト ラ イ タ ー)Angelic self-writing)
An ability stolen from Neon Nostrad. It creates accurate predictions about future events. The user cannot predict his future. The ability requires:
- A person's full name
- Date of birth
- His/her blood type
The target person writes the required information on a piece of paper, then hands it to the ability user, who then calls the "Lovely Ghostwriter", a kind of green monster that attaches itself to the user's arm and moves its pen. The user does not know what he is writing, being in a trance-like state. The prophecies take the form of poetry, composed of 4 or 5 quatrains each corresponding to each week of the month. The first stanza is always something that has already happened. Neon refuses to read her own predictions, feeling that she would be wasting her ability, but Kuroro has read her predictions from the recipients, but some of them have proved to be inaccurate.
Double Face (栞のテーマダブルフェイス The bookmark theme)
A technique that allows him to put a bookmark in the Skill Hunter and be able to close it while keeping the power of the page. He can either use a technique that requires both hands or open his book on another page and use two techniques at the same time
The Sun and Moon ((番いの破壊者サンアンドムーン) The pair of destroyers)
This technique was stolen from the dean of the city of the shooting star. On the back of each of his hands appear a symbol. A sun and a plus in the left hand and a moon and a minus in the right hand. He can put them on someone where he wants (the back and the left hand in the case of the referee). When the two symbols come into contact an explosion takes place. The longer the contact time the more powerful the explosion. According to Kuroro, it takes only 3 to 5 seconds to create an explosion that reduces a man to dust.
Order Stamp (人間の証明オーダースタンプ The proof of a man)
Kuroro summons a small stamp that he can apply on the forehead of a puppet that obeys all the orders given. Compared to the Black Voice it has the advantage of being able to control a large number of puppets but only with simple orders. Kuroro will use it on copies created from Gallery Fake because Order Stamp does not animate corpses but their copies do.
Convert Hands (転校生コンバートハンズ The New Student)
Arrows appear in Kuroro's hands, if he touches someone with his right hand the person takes on Kuroro's appearance, if he touches them with his left hand it is Kuroro who takes on the appearance of the target. He can also create a complete inversion by touching with both hands. However, he always keeps the arrows in his palm.
Black Voice (携帯する他人の運命ブラックボイス Transporting the fate of others)
A technique borrowed from Sharnalk. He can control up to two people if he has first planted an antenna on them. The control is done from a monitor similar to a cell phone.
Gallery Fake (神の左手悪魔の右手ギャラリーフェイク Left hand divine Right hand evil)
A technique borrowed from Korutopi. With it he can recreate copies of objects, but they remain inanimate. Kuroro uses it to create copies of spectators during his fight, he combines this technique with Order Stamp and Sun and Moon so that the copies are animated and attack Hisoka.
Anecdotes

- Kuroro ranked fourth in the second character popularity poll, and eighth in the third character popularity poll conducted by Weekly Shonen Jump.
- Kuroro's stealing abilities are similar to Rando from Yu Yu Hakusho, but the conditions they need to steal the abilities are opposite; Rando needs to kill his victims with the goal of stealing his powers, while Kuroro needs to keep his victims alive; otherwise, he cannot use his abilities.
- Suzaku, a character from Yoshihiro Togashi's Yu Yu Hakusho made an appearance as one of the victims listed in his book in the 2011 anime.
- The Hunter × Hunter OST (2011) refers to Kuroro as "The Man with the Inverted Cross.''
- In the 1999 series, Kuroro has the spider tattoo, without a number inside, in his right arm. In the manga and the 2011 series, however, he does not have the tattoo.
