Death Note: L

L Lawliet ( Jap. エル ローライト, Eru Rôraito ), known as L (エル, Eru), is a world-renowned detective who takes on the challenge to catch the serial killer known as Kira. In his investigation, L highly suspects Light Yagami and his goal is to prove that Light is Kira. He is also endowed with an extraordinary intelligence and uses his intellectual abilities anonymously in the service of the police.

Apparence

L is a tall, thin young man with black hair and eyes of the same color. One of his most striking features is the dark circles under each of his eyes, as a result of sleep deprivation. L is always seen wearing blue denim pants and a white long-sleeved shirt. He almost never wears shoes or socks, preferring to walk barefoot, even in public. This was demonstrated when he visited Light Yagami's school and was seen barefoot while sitting on a bench, until he got up to walk.

Personality

L is quiet and very intelligent, able to deduce the right things from very few clues, and to test people without them realizing it in order to get the information he wants. He is also quite peculiar, as when he states that his thinking abilities are halved when he is not sitting with his legs bent against his chest, his feet gripping the chair and his hands resting on his knees.

He has a recurrent habit of holding every object by its extremities (telephones, pens, spoon...)

He also seems to have some autistic traits (which would explain his unusual intelligence) especially when he behaves in his own way or walks around barefoot without embarrassment, or when he says that Light is his first friend, which would indicate that he has trouble with society.

He loves sweets and eats them all the time. According to him, if he doesn't get fat by eating, it is because he uses his brain.

He is also quite mocking, as he openly laughs at Misa or Matsuda while he knows that Misa is watching him and hangs up on him without any concern. When he holds his phone, he holds it by the top hanging next to his ear with his elbow in the air.

According to Matsuda, he sleeps in the same position as he does when he is thinking, on his chair.

Skills

Despite his sleepy and weary appearance, L is very lively and active. Junior tennis champion in England according to his own words, he proves to be extremely talented during his match against Light. He also manages to defend himself in hand-to-hand combat, and even answers Light with a powerful kick. He often stands in a strange way, in attitudes suggesting a certain flexibility.

However, his intelligence remains his main asset.

Biography

Childhood

L was found by Watari as a child and raised in the orphanage known as Wammy's House. His exceptional skills and Watari's support make him, at an unknown age, the world's greatest detective, solving the most complicated cases.

Kira case

Watari allows L to communicate with Interpol through a computer, so that he can expose his ideas about the strange influx of heart attacks that only affect criminals. He is the first person to assert that the person responsible is a human, whom the media and the public quickly name Kira, derived from the English word "killer". L, suspecting Kira to be Japanese, or at least to reside in Japan, asks for the help of the Japanese police. He promises Interpol that he will prove his case in a "direct confrontation with this or these criminals".

Death Note

Lind.L.Tailor

During a television program, a certain Lind.L.Tailor pretends to be L and provokes Kira by insulting him in various ways. Light, incensed, writes his name in the Death Note and makes him die live of a heart attack. But after that, the real L speaks up, without showing his face, and announces that it was a set-up to prove that Kira really existed and was in Japan.

Indeed, this TV program supposedly broadcasted all over the world was only visible in the Kanto region, in Japan. L then explains his reasoning. Kira's first victim was a crazed hostage taker holed up in a kindergarten, but since it was of lesser importance, the information was only broadcast in the Japanese media. Knowing Kira's country of residence, he had organized this staging, planning to broadcast it to all regions, starting with the most populated ones, with a slight delay. Moreover, this reaction to simple provocations shows that the murders are not the facts of a divine punishment, but of a human being, who does not manage to kill the real L.

L and Light then swear simultaneously to find and kill the other, because "they are justice".

The Japanese police notice, thanks to L, that Kira commits his murders at fixed times, reminding them of a student or a high school student. L also relies on his immature behavior, his overinflated ego, as well as his vindictive character.

Light, thanks to his father's computer (Sôichirô Yagami), is aware of the progress of the investigation and has fun challenging L's reasoning. Thus, seeing that the police suspect him of being a high school student, he shows them that this is not necessarily the case by killing at scheduled times throughout the day. The investigation office reacts instantly and doesn't believe in L's theory anymore, but he explains that Kira just wanted to prove that he could kill whenever he wanted. He finds it suspicious that at the moment when the theory of the high school student was discussed, a series of murders come to sweep away the hypothesis, and he deduces that Kira probably has the possibility to access the information of the Japanese police. And as Light had foreseen, L starts to make researches on his side, thanks to the FBI, on his police officers not excluding the possibility that Kira could be among them.

Light wanted to verify what degree of precision the Death Note can reach, so he carried out experiments on the prisoners. Three of them are killed, always by heart attack, but before dying, one makes a strange drawing with his blood, another writes a letter with no apparent clear meaning and another runs away from his cell to die in the toilet. Of course, L is quickly informed and starts to wonder about their behavior. He then asks Sôichirô Yagami not to inform the other policemen about the details. He thinks, rightly, that Kira made tests on these 3 prisoners and he doesn't want to provide the results of his experiment via the media. By rereading the letter written by the prisoner, L realizes that a hidden message seems to be addressed to him: "L do you know it?

Light decides to challenge L by using the death note, he kills another prisoner who also leaves a writing that, read like the previous one says: "The gods of death...". L immediately makes the connection with the previous letter, an important message perhaps appearing: "L do you know it? The God of death....", he wonders then if the gods of death exist, but he quickly puts this hypothesis aside, he is much too rational to believe it. A little later he is informed that all the members of the FBI in charge of the investigation on the Japanese police died. Sôichirô Yagami calls L to express his dissatisfaction with his total lack of confidence in the Japanese police.

L finally receives the last message from Kira, in the same way as the previous ones. But the precious message is not very serious: "L do you know it? The God of Death only eats apples".

L death note

L is pensive in front of his window

Sôichirô asks all the policemen of the team in charge of the investigation if they want to continue the investigation in spite of the risk that Kira attacks them or their close relations. Only 7 policemen stay, but one of them doesn't accept the fact that L stays hidden, in security, while they risk their life against Kira. So L invites his teammates to prove his trust in them.

The investigation team arrives at the meeting place, a hotel room. They do not hide their amazement when L appears. He is a rather singular character, barefoot, dishevelled, young, thin and pale, with big dark circles and a bit disheveled. The policemen show their badges one by one and L pretends to shoot at them to warn them not to reveal their names unnecessarily, because Kira could be anyone and would have already killed them.

L death note

L reveals his true face to the police

L invites the policemen to sit down but he is very careful, obliging them to put their phones and computers on a table (so as not to be disturbed) and not to take notes in order not to keep a written trace (in case Kira would have access to this information). He also asks to be called "Ryuzaki" as a precaution.

Matsuda says that if Kira only needs the name and face of the person to delete him, it is enough to not communicate this information, but L retorts that, because he is childish and hates to lose, like him, Kira would kill innocent people.

L then proposes a ploy to put Kira in a bad light, he wants to make it look like the FBI sent 1500 investigators to Japan. L then says that maybe this will put him on his guard and that he will end up making a mistake.

L death note

L exposes his theories

L exposes his theories about Kira, he thinks that he acts alone and that he has access to the information of the investigation cell. He also claims that Kira is among the people that the FBI was monitoring and therefore distributes the files of these people.

After interviewing each of his team members, L is certain that Kira is not among them. Apparently he had planned a little trick to check but he didn't even feel the need to apply it. After that, he introduces Watari to his team, who brings them fake badges and gives each of them a belt equipped with a transmitter that allows them to know the position of its wearer, who can call them by pressing twice on the buckle.

A few days later, L asks Aizawa to bring him all the surveillance videos of the FBI agents who died a few days earlier. After a first visioning, L sees a second time the sequence concerning Ray Penber and notices that when he validates his ticket, Ray carries an envelope under his arm but that at the time when he dies, this one does not have it anymore. He also finds strange the fact that Ray, at the time of dying, tries to look in the train as if he wanted to look at somebody. He puts the hypothesis that this "somebody" is in fact Kira but he quickly puts this idea aside, not understanding the utility, for Kira to come, at the risk of being suspected. But maybe Kira thought that he was going to come up with this reasoning and therefore voluntarily took the risk of exposing himself, without fear of being suspected.

After a night of watching the surveillance videos, L receives a call informing him that Naomi Misora, Penber's fiancé, has disappeared - presumably committing suicide. Having worked with her on a previous investigation, he knows that she probably didn't kill herself, but rather tried to avenge Ray. Wondering then if she was not killed by Kira after having discovered something on him, L decides to concentrate on the individuals watched by Ray Penber: the family of the Sub-prefect Kitamura, and the family Yagami.

With the agreement of Sôchirô Yagami, he places both houses under surveillance. Sôichirô finds Light too careful, when he checks that nobody has entered his room, but L is not surprised and considers it normal; he does the same without precise reasons. In the same way, Yagami is extremely surprised that his son, who is so serious, hides and reads magazines with pictures of naked women (Light's pretext to watch his room), but again, L doesn't find it strange for his age.

L sends a message through the media saying that 1500 investigators have been sent to flush out Kira while the Yagami are watching TV. Light is not fooled, he understands immediately that it is false and tells it openly to his sister. L is impressed by his intelligence. Light takes advantage of the fact that L observes him to build an alibi: after having eaten, he goes up to his room to revise, without turning on his television and his computer, but watching discreetly the news thanks to a mini TV and marking with his left hand the names of the criminals, that he is not supposed to know, on his notebook. When he learns about their death, Sôichirô is relieved because now, his family is cleared, although L finds the immediate evidence of its members suspicious.

After a few days of intensive viewing, L deduces that there are no suspects in the two families. But he doesn't say that Kira is not hiding among them, because maybe he has continued to kill as usual without letting anything show, and if this is the case, he is endowed with a great mental strength, comparable to that of a God. So he decides to stop the surveillance.

While Light is taking an exam, a student attracts his attention by his strange behavior.... he doesn't know it yet but it's L!

Light finally enters the university, but during the opening ceremony when he has to make a speech with the other student who got the maximum mark in all the subjects, as a representative of the students, he realizes that this person is the one who had attracted his attention during the exam, a person named Ideki Riyuga, like a known star.

Just after finishing their speech, L reveals his identity to Light, this one is of course shocked by this revelation but he is also stuck because he can't try anything against him. L asks Light to help him in his research in the Kira case, both to benefit from his help and to watch him.
