Personality
Doppo is presented as a strong, proud, wise and caring man. He takes his role as director and founder of Shinshinkai Karate very seriously. He goes so far as to close the dojo forever because of a promise he made to his students and himself that he would never lose to anyone again. In his Maximum Tournament match against Gouki Shibukawa, he even went as far as asking the old man to kill him in an honorable death of warriors to be spared by Shibukawa who told him to live and continue training.
Doppo's devotion to martial arts has caused him to question and continue his life's journey of finding the perfect fist, no matter how many people praise and admire him, he always stays and tries to remain humble. In a flashback of him what seems to be a few days before the maximum tournament, we see him questioning his fist and trying to sleep for the night being annoyed by a fly nearby that is bothering him, he reacts quickly and punches the air soon opening his eyes that he sees the blood of the dead fly and looks at his fist seeing the posture of his hand mimicking that of the Enlightened one that the Buddha known as the Buddhist sampa hand reflects.
He has a courageous characteristic of "no quit" when it comes to fighting up to a Siberian tiger in his youth and even admits that it was a bit silly of him, but it earned him one of his many nicknames the "Tiger Killer". He also believes in his karate style that there is no backing down or running away when fighting Yuujirou Hanma or a Siberian tiger.
Despite his formidable role of "Tiger Killer", "Man Eater" and "God Hand", he showed that he has a caring side when his wife Natsue is worried about her husband's fight with the "King of Beasts" Yuujirou or in the ultimate underground tournament, he in turn comforts his wife by saying that he will never lose to anyone again and that he would turn the gold championship belt into jewels for her when he wins. Another example is shown when he confronts Dorian when he prevents his son from fighting the convict by saying "it is my duty as the founder of the Shinshinkai Karate dojo to fight him" when in truth it is possible that he was just concerned about the safety of his son. He even lets Kiyosumi Katouquit a hospital just to give Dorian the final blow for closure. When Katsumi faces the prehistoric man Pickle, Doppo is seen waiting near the entrance of the arena in a wide horse position waiting for Katsumi and gives him advice only for Katsumi to understand the meaning that his father was proud and worried about him.
He showed that he had a rather ruthless but comical sense of himself, like during his short fight with Katou to use his words against him and say "so it's supposed to be hot, huh?" and puts his fingers in Katou's eye sockets only to show him that Katou didn't train enough. During the monthly training session with his best students and a visiting Baki Hanma, he threatens Baki that he couldn't leave his Dojo alive if they were to fight only for a student to tell Baki that the director was only joking.
Doppo Orochi is a tactical genius when it comes to one-on-one fighting. Before the fight even begins, Doppo already has many "tricks" up his sleeve that he is ready to use. And before engaging in the actual fight, he will carefully inspect his opponent, his position, his fighting style, his techniques, etc. Even if he was caught off guard, he would be able to decipher the secrets of the other's frightening abilities quite quickly. In short, Doppo Orochi, a bit like Kaiou Kaku, is a real fighting genius. Although he is an expert in martial arts, Doppo relies too much on his karate and is most of the time so deceived that he considers karate as "the purest and most supreme form of fighting that exists". Like Kaiou Kaku, he can be caught off guard by a much more vicious or aggressive opponent, leaving him vulnerable, just as in Doppo's battle with Dorian when the American convict cut off Doppo's hand using a ruse.
Apparence
Doppo is a bald man of above average height, muscular build and two visible scars on his face, one on his right cheek and the other on his left near his head and ear. He wears a simple eye patch over his right eye because of the damage inflicted by Yuujirô Hanma. When he is not in combat, he wears sunglasses over his eye patch and a simple light green suit.
When fighting, he wears the traditional karate gi with rolled up sleeves and a black belt signifying his rank. The kanji "Shinshinkai" on the right side of his gi and the kanji "Director" on the back of his collar both signify his role as director of the Shinshinkai Dojo. During his years of fighting in the underground arena, a young Doppo wore only his famous and legendary shorts and belt from the story "Tale of Doppo Orochi the Tiger Killer" in which he fought and killed a tiger. This outfit was also worn during his second fight with Dorian.
In the second manga series, the death row inmate Dorian was able to slice Doppo's hand with an industrial strength steel wire hidden in a lighter (which was eventually reattached). After his fight with the American convict Dorian; Doppo suffered primary blast wounds resulting in small scars covering Doppo's face.
History
Baki the grappler
Past
Fifteen years before the beginning of the Underground Arena saga, Doppo meets for the first time Katsumi Orochi, who is 5 years old. The great karate master sees him in a circus where Katsumi performs as an incredible and strong child. That day, a great tragedy happens and Katsumi's father is murdered by a circus lion. After that, Doppo decides to adopt a young boy and then starts teaching him Shinshinkai karate.
Saga of the underground arena
In this saga, Doppo appears for the first time at the Shinshinkai Karate tournament. Before the final battle between Baki Hanma and Atsushi Suedou, he gives people a demonstration of his skills in the arena, then comes to Suedou and warns him about his opponent. Before the fight, he also meets Baki and wishes him good luck. When the battle is over, he comes to Baki and tells him that he guesses his secret life in the underground arena under the Tokyo Dome. Baki admits that he has been "exposed". The same day, he interrupts the fight between Kiyosumi Katou and Izou Motobe. He greets Motobe, a powerful juujutsu master and his old acquaintance. Motobe starts to insult Doppo by saying that he has become a weakling who lost his terrifying power when he became a popular karate teacher, but finally everyone leaves. In the anime, the meeting after years of Doppo and Katou is completely different. A scene is shown where Mitsunari Tokugawa, the owner of the Underground Arena, comes to the Shinshinkai dojo and persuades Doppo to bring Katsumi Orochi to the arena (in the manga, the first mention of Katsumi appears at the beginning of the Maximum Tournament saga). Suddenly, their conversation is interrupted by Katou, who comes unexpectedly to the Shinshinkai dojo and attacks various disciples. Atsushi Suedou tries to stop him, but Katou quickly knocks him out. Doppo presents an aggressive guest to Tokugawa. This scene appears only in the anime series.
After the whole situation, Doppo meets Katou at the restaurant. They explain why Katou gave up Shinshinkai karate and became a yakuza. The young fighter tells him that his teachings are weak and not very practical in real fight. Doppo challenges him and starts a short fight, in which Katou has no chance. Doppo tells him about the Underground Arena where Baki is the champion. Later, Doppo invites him again in his dojo, where Katou beats Takagi, one of Shinshinkai's disciples. Finally, they meet at the Underground Arena, where Doppo meets his old friend named Mitsunari Tokugawa, the founder of the arena. Tokugawa is happy to see Doppo (in manga, this is the first scene in which Tokugawa appears). Tokugawa tells the two fighters the story of the creation of the arena. Later, they watch Baki's fight with Koushou Shinogi in the arena.
A month later, Doppo reappeared in the underground arena and watched Baki's fight with Mount Toba. After the fight, Yuujirou Hanma suddenly entered the arena. Doppo also enters the ring and starts talking to him. He tells Yuujirou that he still hasn't forgotten the two scars, which remind their old match. He challenges Yuujirou to a duel and Tokugawa plans to fight next month. After all, Baki tries to persuade Doppo to give up the upcoming match, saying that the grandmaster will be murdered. Doppo feels ignored by the underground arena champion and invites him to his dojo for the "Shinshinkai special day" where different karate fighters have the chance to challenge Doppo Orochi. The great master beats all his opponents one by one, and at the end even Baki starts a fight with him. After a short battle, it turns out that Baki is unable to defend himself against Doppo's attacks. Baki changes his mind about the great master and even starts to believe in his victory. Later, Doppo tells him about his old match with Yuujirou. Ten years earlier, Doppo was celebrating the opening of his own Shinshinkai dojo. Then, Doppo Orochi drunkenly was attacked by Yuujirou. He lost a fight after two attacks on his face with scars left on it.
Before the battle with Yuujirou, Doppo meets his wife Natsue Orochi . A worried woman wishes him good luck, which motivates the great karate master. When Doppo meets Yuujirou in the arena, he launches a surprise attack against Yuujirou. Later, he falls victim to the Ogre's Udonde technique. At some point, Doppo uses Sanganet and even starts to dominate the fight. At one point, however, Yuujirou shows everyone his "demon back" and starts to fight seriously, attacking Doppo with brutal attacks. The karateka falls to the ground, but after a while he gets up when Yuujirou wants to leave the arena. This prompts Yuujirou to decide to give Doppo one last shot of gratitude. First of all, Doppo loses his right eye and eventually dies from the devil's blow to the heart inflicted by Yuujirou. The doctor of the underground arena is unable to save Doppo and everyone thinks that the great master will die. Fortunately, Doppo's life is saved by Kureha Shinogi, a fighter with medical abilities and another opponent of Baki in the underground arena.
Maximum tournament saga
This saga begins with Doppo's training at Shinshinkai dojo. Kiyosumi Katou and Atsushi Suedou look at him and are surprised that he recovered so quickly after the tragic battle with Yuujirou. The great master says that after his defeat he should not be the leader of the Shinshinkai anymore and intends to send his son Katsumi Orochi in his place. Then Tokugawa tells them that he is organizing the great martial arts tournament in the Underground Arena.
In the first match of the tournament, Doppo fights a famous bodyguard and brawler named Richard Filth . The American brawler always fights in his stylish clothes, so Doppo also decides to enter the arena in his formal suit. The fight begins with an unusual situation in which both fighters let themselves be bombarded with their best shots, making the fight look like a typical street fight. At one point, Doppo decides to use a defensive karate technique called Sanchin. This technique helps him maintain a steady balance during a match, but he still takes every blow from his opponent and doesn't dodge, wanting this fight to look like a street fight. In the end, Doppo shows him that his power is much better and he wins with a clean hit to Filth's neck. However, after the fight, Doppo raises his opponent's hand and shows a unique respect for Filth, who didn't dodge any blow and took everything directly on his face.
In the second round, Doppo fights against Yuu Amanai, a mysterious companion of Yuujirou Hanma. At first, Doppo overcomes all his specific aerial techniques and dominates the fight. However, at one point, Amanai catches him in a strange submission hold and advises the great master to give up. However, after a hard fight, Doppo manages to get out of this hold and starts to slaughter Amanai with various karate techniques. Amanai survives all the brutal attacks and grabs Doppo again in another submission move, finally breaking Doppo's knee. Despite this, the grandmaster declares that he can continue their fight. Then Amanai starts to protest and ask Tokugawa to stop the match, saying that Doppo has no chance to win and will only get hurt. Finally, Doppo tries to attack Amanai, but Yuujirou in anger enters the ring and hits Amanai with a surprise attack, breaking his collarbone and calling him weak. Doppo talks with the Ogre and almost starts to fight him, but Kureha Shinogi interrupts him with the other fighters of the tournament. In the end, Doppo is considered the winner of this round.
Before the start of the match between Katsumi and Kaiou Retsu, Doppo meets his adopted son in the locker room and tells Katsumi that he has already given him all the knowledge and has no advice at this stage. Doppo makes it clear to Katsumi that this match will eventually settle the dispute between karate and Chinese Kempo, so if Katsumi loses, Shinshinkai karate is meaningless. Unfortunately, Katsumi loses his battle with Retsu extremely quickly and Doppo is very surprised.
He enters the third round of the tournament, where his next opponent is the former juujutsu master, Gouki Shibukawa . Before the match starts, Doppo tells him that he is extremely happy to fight the great Shibukawa. At first, Doppo can't hit Shibukawa, who constantly uses the legendary Aiki defense technique, so he decides to stop all offensive action and provokes the old master to attack first and thanks to that Doppo counters him with his own powerful karate punch called the bodhisattva fist. Later, Shibukawa attacks him again with a powerful juujutsu technique, but Doppo does not give up. Both martial artists slowly approach, knowing that the next move will settle this battle. Doppo hits Shibukawa with another powerful blow, but the old juujutsu master still manages to knock him out with a brutal move, in which Shibukawa slams Doppo into the ground with all his might. The honor of the great karate master does not allow him to accept the usual knockout and asks Shibukawa to kill him, but the old juujutsu master saves Doppo's life to face him again one day in the future.
After the fight, Doppo tells Katou and Suedou that he officially leaves the Shinshinkai dojo and decides to start training alone again. Then Natsue approaches him and tells Doppo to go back home where she will prepare him some soba noodles. Doppo is surprised by her calm and friendly attitude, then he accepts her proposal.
Baki
The saga of the most diabolical death row inmates
In the second series, Doppo appears for the first time in the Underground Arena where he accompanies Retsu, Hanayama and Shibukawa to meet five convicts who came to Tokyo in search of "defeat". After a while, Baki joins them, then Tokugawa proposes a kind of "war" to the two groups of fighters. Both parties agree. After leaving the arena, Doppo talks to Dorian, an American who had attacked the Shinshinkai dojo a few days earlier and seriously injured Katsumi. Doppo declares that he is interested in having a match with Dorian, then attacks him with surprise. The whole fight is watched by Retsu, who wanted to fight Dorian to get revenge on Katsumi. Their rather short battle leads to the point where Dorian manages to cut Doppo's hand using a special thread. The great karate master stops the bleeding by pressing on his hand, and after a while, he hits the condemned man with his stump, explaining that it has always been his dream to pull off such a punch. When Dorian, dazed by the blow, falls to the ground, it turns out that Doppo has escaped.
Then, Doppo is seen at a meeting of the five fighters at Tokugawa's house. There is a big cast on Doppo's hand, but the further fate of his hand is not yet explained. The meeting concerns Baki, who fought against Ryuukou Yanagi, a Japanese prisoner, but unfortunately lost the fight. Suddenly, Dorian enters the room unexpectedly, holding a bucket of gasoline in one hand and a lighter in the other. The American wants to set the house on fire, but then Katsumi appears even more unexpectedly, stopping Dorian, setting his body on fire and asking Doppo if he did the right thing. After a while, Dorian gets up and Doppo wants to challenge him to another duel, but it turns out that Katsumi has brought Kiyosumi Katou with him. Katou greets Doppo, and after a while starts to attack the American in retaliation to his master's hand. It comes to a situation where Dorian catches both Katsumi and Katou with his special wire, but Doppo saves them at the last minute. The great karate master is angry with his two disciples, claiming that they have deviated from the true path of karate. All the commotion is finally stopped by Dorian who throws a grenade and causes an explosion in the Tokugawa house.
After Kiyosumi Katou was brutalized by Dorian, he organized the Shinshinkai to hunt down the criminal. He ends up coming face to face with the criminal himself, after recovering his hand.
Capabilities
Doppo is one of the few people in the world with Baki Hanma or Kaiou Kaku who can stand almost in front of Yuujirou Hanma . He puts his students in shape by fighting them regularly. Doppo being a 10th Dan and great karate master has shown exceptional and extraordinary fighting skills and abilities that Baki describes as formidable and strong and would hate to challenge him. Doppo trains and practices his techniques every day at least a thousand times a day. His style of karate is based on brute strength, speed, endurance and technique ranging from stances to defensive/offensive techniques.
As the founder and practitioner of the Shinshinkai style of Karate, Doppo showed above strength and human skills such as flipping a large manhole cover with one hand while being sealed inside a large concrete pipe and turning it to dust with his hands and feet. Dorian recalls rumors and stories that Doppo was able to uproot large trees with his fist and kill a tiger with his bare hands, another testament to his skills. Even his finger strike is very powerful. He used it on Kiyosumi Katou when his former student started to become arrogant after his easy victory against Takagi and showed no modesty towards the other students of Shinshinkai Dojo. The force of Doppo's finger strike was damaging enough to hurt Katou's forehead and even make it bleed.
Kiyosumi Katou and Katsumi Orochi to whom they all noted seemed impossible to fight in real combat. In a demonstration to his students, he managed to cut concrete, stone, ice and a piece of steel wire in half. He also practices his kata (forms) under a large waterfall to sharpen and condition his mind and body.
He is very analytical and knows well the techniques of other fighting styles such as Yuujirou's Udonde technique by quickly thinking of a countermeasure/attack and shows knowledge of Koushou's himokiri karate technique by being able to break down his technique and explain it to others.
