Gaara (我爱罗, Gaara) is a ninja from the hidden village of Sable (Suna). He is also the youngest child of the Fourth Kazekage, the younger brother of Kankuro and Temari. He was the third jinchûriki of Shukaku, having thus become a weapon for Suna, he acquired the nickname "Gaara of the Desert" (砂瀑の我愛羅, Sabaku no Gaara, Literally meaning: Gaara of the Sand Falls). Although Gaara was a major antagonist in the Naruto manga, as the story progressed, he became one of the main protagonists. In Part II, he became the Fifth Kazekage (五代目風影, Godaime Kazekage, Literally meaning: Fifth Shadow of the Wind), as well as Commander General and General of the Fourth Division of the Shinobi Alliance during the Fourth Great Shinobi War.

Considered a monster by the village, and with no one to love him, Gaara has come to despise the world, as Gaara of the Sandfall (砂瀑の我愛羅). This power of self-love is later overcome by Uzumaki Naruto's unwavering dedication to his friends. Gaara then begins to follow Naruto's method, and changes Suna's opinion of him. He later becomes the Fifth Kazekage (五代目風影). A job he keeps after Shukaku is removed from his body.

History

Due to the severe budget cuts in Suna, the fourth Kazekage Rasa wanted to make one of his three children the jinchuriki of the one-tailed Shukaku, so that said child would serve as the ultimate weapon for the village. Her first two children, Temari and Kankuro, were unfortunately not compatible with the Shukaku. However, Rasa's third child, who would become Gaara, was compatible for this task, and for this reason alone, Shukaku was sealed into him by Chiyo while he was still in his mother's womb. So Gaara was born prematurely on January 19, and his mother, Karura, died as a result of the stressful ordeal of childbirth. Before she died, Karura looked at Gaara's small form with love and vowed to always protect him.
Since then, Gaara was raised in total isolation during his youth, when he was only taught ninjutsu by his father and cared for by his maternal uncle, Yashamaru. When he was allowed to walk around the village alone, Gaara tried to connect with the villagers, while being kind to them and offering any help he could. However, being a jinchuriki made the villagers very afraid of Gaara; the adults avoided him, and when they couldn't, they treated him gently while the children ran away on sight. Gaara would try to assure them that he meant no harm, but in the process he would inadvertently hurt them or even kill them with his sand. Gaara didn't understand the pain he was causing others because his sand protected him from any injury.

However, Gaara played with his older siblings on a sandbox, and used his control over the sand to create intricate and detailed structures. At Kankuro's request, Gaara makes food sculptures, infuriating Temari. Their father calls Kankurō and Temari is gone. However, he is sad when his siblings leave with their father.

As a child, Gaara made many attempts to get closer to the people of Suna, who all feared him because of his connection to Shukaku. Seeing him only as the monster he was, it seemed for a while that Yashamaru was the only person who cared about Gaara. When Gaara unintentionally hurt others because of the subconscious abilities the beast gave him, Yashamaru was the only one who understood that Gaara had no intention of hurting anyone.

In the evening, while they were having dinner together. Gaara asks his uncle why they are hungry. Yashamaru tells him that maybe it is so that they can have good food. Gaara then tells him that Yashamaru makes good food. While playing in the sandbox, Gaara asks him why the sky is blue, and Yashamaru tells him it's so they can look at it. Gaara agrees that looking at the sky eases his pain. Gaara then asks him why he is not sleepy and why he doesn't have a mother. But Yashamaru avoids answering these questions for Gaara's safety. However, Gaara smiles after Yashamaru tells him that he will always be by his side. After his niece and nephew leave, Yashamaru arrives with his lunch, and Gaara notices that he really looks like his mother.

When he is six years old, Gaara asks Yashamaru to explain him what pain is. From Yashamaru's explanation, Gaara thinks that he knows pain: as the unbearable agony of his heart. Yashamaru deduced that physical pain, which causes bleeding, could be cured by medicine and time, while the pain of the heart, as Gaara experienced it, could only be cured by love. Gaara, as Yashamaru said, received love every day, both from his mother whose spirit controlled the sand that protected him and from Yashamaru himself. Gaara welcomed this and went into the village to show some love to those he had hurt, but his efforts were only met with more fear and hatred.

Gaara ShukakuGaara was in a state of dismay and left to try to figure out why he was being treated like such a monster. In doing so, he was attacked by one of the Suna Anbu, whom he mortally wounded with his sand. When he unmasked the Anbu, Gaara discovered and was horrified by the fact that it was Yashamaru.

Gaara was devastated that Yashamaru, the only person alive who loved him, had tried to kill him and demanded an explanation. Yashamaru replied that it was a mission given to him by Rasa, Gaara's father, as the Suna Council had decided that Gaara was a failed experiment who, if allowed to live, would only continue to harm the village and its people. Gaara tried to find comfort in the fact that Yashamaru had been ordered to kill him, but Yashamaru insisted, lying to Gaara, that he had volunteered and that he had always hated Gaara for causing Karura's death. Karura had not liked Gaara either, and named him after the phrase "a carnage of self-love" (我を愛する修羅) so that he would be a curse to Suna for what she had done to him. With all his explanations done, Yashamaru asked Gaara to die before he blew himself up with explosive tags.
Gaara's sand was a product of Shukaku rather than Karura, if Yashamaru's words are to be believed, which protected Gaara from the explosion. Having lost everything he cared about, Gaara decided that he would now live up to his namesake by loving only himself; to this end, he used his sand to carve the kanji of "love" (愛) on the left side of his forehead. Overcome with grief, Gaara transforms into Shukaku and attacks Suna, in which Rasa stops with his gold dust.

In the anime, after his first rampage as Shukaku in Suna, Gaara returned home to have dinner with his siblings. When Kankuro angrily confronted him and asked him whether or not he felt remorse for killing his countrymen. Gaara silenced him by threatening to kill him, then Temari stopped Kankuro from hurting their younger brother.

After the traumatic experience of losing his uncle and being told that no one ever loved him, Gaara became a distant and cruel person who obsessively kills people in an attempt to prove his own existence and gain recognition from the village. He gave up all desire for friendship. Seeing that Gaara was unable to cope with the loss of his mother's affection, the Kazekage considered him a failure and organized several assassination attempts on his son, which only strengthened Gaara's hatred for his father. In time, Gaara's new ideology allowed him to have more control over Shukaku. Realizing this, his father cancelled all assassination orders and revived the idea of one day using Gaara as the ultimate weapon of the village.

Personality

Gaara was always warm towards others in his youth. Although most of the villagers in Suna feared and despised him, he was able to persevere because of the love he felt for Yashamaru and his mother. His father, Rasa, thought that these subtleties were hindering Gaara's development as a jinchuriki, and so he took both away from him: he ordered Yashamaru to try to kill Gaara and, if he should fail, to tell Gaara that neither he nor Gaara's mother had ever loved him. Rasa's plan succeeded, because after Yashamaru's death, Gaara stopped trying to connect with people. Instead, Gaara focused on himself, guided only by his own desires and survival.
During the years when he only cared for himself, Gaara is infamously known as "Gaara of the Sandfall" (砂瀑の我愛羅). Although he appears calm on the surface, "Gaara of the Sandfall" is deeply unbalanced, completely unresponsive to the pleas for mercy from others and, in some situations, completely insane with bloodlust. This behavior is partly due to Shukaku, whose voice can only be heard in Gaara's head, who encourages violence at every opportunity and torments Gaara by threatening to take control of his body if he falls asleep, thus making Gaara an insomniac. But Shukaku is not entirely to blame: Gaara simply hates others for their existence, believing that as long as they are alive, they are a threat to his own life. His goal is therefore to kill all those who are strong or whom he perceives as similar to him, for only by killing them can he assert his own existence. With those he is not interested in, Gaara is usually withdrawn and silent. When he must interact with them, he does so with disregard for their feelings and often threatens to kill them, even his own siblings, if they become too troublesome for him.

Gaara Shukaku

Gaara's background is very similar to Uzumaki Naruto's: as they have both been jinchuriki since the day they were born, they were both hated by almost everyone in their village and were raised without the love of a parent. But while Gaara eventually abandoned the others, Naruto continued to try to earn the recognition of his peers and the village pursuits he eventually succeeded in. While Gaara only seeks strength to protect himself, Naruto seeks strength by protecting the friends he makes. When the two fight during the invasion of Konoha, Naruto defeats him. Gaara takes this as proof that his own life choices were wrong, as he surrendered too easily to his difficult circumstances. From this point on, he begins to distance himself from "Gaara of the Sandfall" and begins to emulate Naruto instead, improving his relationships with his siblings, making friends within Suna and finding something he is willing to give his life to protect. His relationship with Shukaku improved somewhat when he told the tailed beast that he hated her, but was grateful that he was able to meet Naruto because of the painful life Shukaku had made him provide.

Gaara becomes the Kazekage of Suna at the beginning of the second part, signaling the success of his emulation of Naruto. Gaara acquires a new purpose in life by putting all his energies into serving the village and those who live there. Although he still has his detractors, most of the villagers adore him and will do everything they can to help him reform Suna and the rest of the world. Even this reform is very much inspired by Naruto, as he wants the Five Kage and their hidden villages to cooperate and benefit from each other, in the same way that he benefited from Naruto's influence. Gaara believes in forgiving past differences and conflicts, abandoning archaic concepts of "honor" that only promote isolation, and achieving a goal greater than oneself. As for Suna, this unity that Gaara advocates is slow to be felt, benefiting for a time only from the support of Naruto's own village, Konohagakure. But by the time of the Fourth Shinobi War, the five Kage are convinced by Gaara and this begins to have an effect on the allied Shinobi forces.

Gaara Shukaku
Gaara feels indebted to Naruto for how much he has changed since his time as "Gaara of the Sandfall"; for he considers Naruto his closest friend and believes that all the tragedies of his childhood were worth it since they led him to meet Naruto. He participates in the Fourth Shinobi War not only because he believes in stopping the Akatsuki, but also because that is how he can ensure Naruto's safety. Gaara's desire to protect Naruto sometimes means that he acts against Naruto's will. He knows that Naruto would like to participate in the Fourth Shinobi War, but he thinks that Naruto would be safer if he were forbidden to do so; he knows that Naruto wants to redeem Uchiha Sasuke. But he will kill Sasuke if Naruto's indulgence puts him in danger, and yet he is willing to leave advice for Naruto to consider at least for himself what the best course of action is for Sasuke, while not being above admitting when he might be wrong, as was demonstrated when Naruto's presence in the war did more good than harm, as he and the Raikage and Mizukage originally thought. Gaara often cites his own experiences as "Gaara of the Sandfall" when interacting with Sasuke and others who suffer from hatred and loneliness, explaining the missteps he had not realized before meeting Naruto so that they, in turn, could realize theirs. His words don't always convince them, but Gaara is able to identify with their choices and, as for Sasuke, he even wonders if Naruto could have understood them, just as Naruto did for him.

Gaara ShukakuSince he became one of Naruto's companions, Gaara has sort of assumed his ability to change people's personalities. In the anime, he convinced Matsuri to overcome her fear of weapons. At the Kage summit, he shocked the older and more experienced Kage by asking them when they had given up, which later caused Onoki to become much more determined to protect the Shinobi world. Before the Shinobi Alliance went into battle, he motivated them to put aside their differences, forget their past rivalries and unite under one banner.

His bond with Naruto also made him able to reject any grudges, including his previous hatred towards his father, who was partly responsible for Gaara's miserable childhood. He admits that he also had to forgive his father's actions, but weeps openly after learning that his mother truly loved him, and that she had sworn to protect him forever by infusing her will into the sand that, as his father noted, would always protect him. His love for his family also extended into his dream of Tsukuyomi infinity, as Gaara dreamed of having his entire family together, and being happy while having Naruto as his childhood friend.

His loyalty to Naruto manifested itself at the height of the Fourth Shinobi War, when Yang Kurama was extracted from Naruto, and Gaara took his unconscious friend who was still alive to the latter's late father, Namikaze Minato, so that Yin Kurama could be locked into Naruto. The plan succeeded, and once Naruto regained consciousness. Gaara told him that when he became the Hokage, they could share a cup of sake together, to which Naruto willingly agreed.

Although he remained ruthless towards his opponents, Gaara is extremely protective of his allies and the innocent, as seen when he protected his village from Deidara; and his siblings, Darui and even the Raikage from Sasuke.

As a Kage, Gaara believes that the ideals of previous generations, that each village should mind its own business and solve its own problems without having to ask for help from others to maintain its appearance and honor, are "ridiculously old-fashioned," and that cooperation between villages is fundamental.

Years later, Gaara shows himself to be more cheerful and relaxed, speaking very kindly to his family even though his nephew has failed to address him with honor, though he maintains his composure. He also adopted a more direct personality, as he immediately told the other Kage to cut off any unnecessary discussion when Naruto arrived late to the meeting. When some of the current Kage expressed concern about letting the next generation deal with the threat they would soon face because it was a peaceful time they were growing up in, Gaara calmly said that every generation has little faith in the next is not an uncommon thing. He is also not convinced that Naruto and Boruto are complete opposites in terms of personality and battle tactics.

Apparence

Gaara is a bit shorter than the average male of his age, which is due to the fact that he was born prematurely. He has light skin and short, spiky, auburn hair, which was sometimes depicted as red in the early parts of the series. He has pale blue-green eyes. Gaara has no distinctive pupils or eyebrows. He has two very notable features in his appearance: first, he has black eye rings, similar to those of the tanuki, which he has worn since birth. Second, he has carved the kanji "love'" (愛) on the left side of his forehead, having it since Yashamaru's betrayal. Gaara's locks are separated on the left side, making the kanji more visible. Matsuri and Sari, who both seem to have a crush on Gaara, described him as the strong and silent, elite and very handsome type.
In the first part, Gaara was seen in two different outfits. When he was first seen, he was wearing a black suit with t-shirt sleeves, ¾ length legs and an open neck. He wore a white cloth over his right shoulder and the left side of his hips, and a large leather band system over his left shoulder and the right side of his hips. Along with this leather band, he carried around his canteen which contains his sand. He also wrapped his black forehead protector over the band. In his childhood flashbacks, he was seen wearing a beige poncho as a shawl over a black short-sleeved T-shirt, a white obi around his waist, dark blue pants that were rolled up several times at the hem, revealing that the inner fabric was gray, and black sandals.

In Sasuke's recovery arc and the final filler arc of Pre-Shippuden, he replaced his previous black overalls with reddish-brown, long-sleeved, straight-collared overalls. He kept the white fabric, but had mesh armor on the cuffs and ankles. He also used this costume in the movie Naruto 2.

In the second part, as in Naruto, Gaara experienced a considerable growth spurt. During his fight with Deidara and during the Kage summit, he wore full-length black pants with a pair of laces on each leg a few inches below the waist and knees respectively, a crimson long-sleeved coat with flared hems and slits on the lower half of the front and back, a gray vest held in place by a single strap over his left shoulder and by two buckled belts that he uses to carry his water bottle. He also wears another pair of casual belts around his waist. He is also seen wearing kazekage robes and a simple black pantsuit, the latter of which looks very similar to Kankurō's, and worn to the memorial for Elder Chiyo. He was seen wearing the standard Sunagakure shinobi sandals all the time. As commander of the Allied Shinobi Forces Regiment, he added his village's bulletproof vest to his standard attire.
Two years after the Fourth Shinobi War, Gaara, now an adult, wears a purple long-sleeved shirt with several buttons and pants of the same color as his shirt. He also wears a brown belt and now has a small sand gourd attached to his left side. Years later, after the Fourth Shinobi War, Gaara's hair has become flat and neatly combed over his right temple.

Special Capabilities

Having been raised from childhood as the "ultimate weapon" of Suna, Gaara is very strong for his age. In the first part, he becomes a favorite to win the Chunin exams, as well as a key element in the planned success of the Konoha invasion. His fame expands from this point on, so that he is recognizable to Kimimaro, and is known to have completed B-rank missions despite being a genin. In the second part, Gaara becomes the fifth kazekage of Suna, in charge of leading and protecting the whole village. His fellow Kage initially doubted his suitability for the position due to his young age, but came to respect him at the beginning of the Fourth Shinobi War, appointing him as the commander-in-chief of the fighting divisions of the allied Shinobi forces. The reincarnated Kage that Gaara fights, including his father, also come to approve of his abilities after he defeats them. He was able to stand up to five of Madara's wooden clones clad in Susanoo for a while.

Chakra

Born as a jinchuriki, Gaara gained Shukaku's immense reserves of chakra and endurance. His chakra was also noted by Inuzuka Kiba as being very strong. Thus, he is able to use many sand-based chakra taxing techniques, sometimes in rapid succession, before running out of energy. Despite Shukaku's removal from his interior, Gaara's chakra reserves and strength have remained just as powerful, as he is the only one of the Five Kage to have shown no signs of low chakra reserves throughout the entire Fourth Shinobi War, even after using his techniques extensively.

Sand control
As the host of Shukaku, Gaara possesses the ability to freely manipulate sand to serve various purposes. Central to his fighting style, Gaara's control and cunning in using this ability is formidable, able to control immense amounts once for such feats as fully transforming into Shukaku and creating a tsunami of sand to fight four reincarnated Kage. During combat, Gaara rarely moves, attacking with his sand from one place, and rarely uses taijutsu. His most basic method of attack is to capture and immobolize his target, then implode the sand to crush it. Taking advantage of the malleable nature of sand, Gaara has developed various "capture and crush" tactics. The second element of his fighting style is sand defense, which allows the opponent to get too close. His first defense is his Sand Shield, which forms a barrier to surround and protect Gaara on its own. Although it is automatic, Gaara can control its strength level to a steel quality or make it lock up completely. While an effective defense, the shield can be overcome by high speed attacks or by fairly simple strength.

In this case, Gaara is covered with a secondary layer of sand called "Sand Armor". While useful, the armor requires large amounts of chakra to remain active, and also has the side effect of making Gaara heavier. The defenses offered by his sand are so powerful that they have been dubbed "Absolute Defense" (絶対防御). It is unclear whether Gaara's authentic sand defense was ever really Shukaku's doing, as both the fourth Kazekage and Yashamaru stated that Gaara's mother Karura was the true source, as she loved him and had sworn to always protect him.

Image result for gaara sand control
In addition to these basic methods of attack and defense, Gaara also has a number of various techniques. By making him a sand clone, Gaara can have an ally to use in battle. Unlike most cloning techniques in the series, the sand clone can retain its form after being hit, able to reform or capture an opponent as it disperses. With his Desert Suspension, Gaara can use the sand as a platform, allowing himself and others to float in the air. He can also ride his sand faster than Ōnoki can fly to a location. His third eye allows him to create a floating eyeball of sand in any location, which he can see through as a way to spy or guide his attacks when his sight is obstructed.

His sand can also be used as a detection device: Gaara can detect when others come into contact with him, even from a distance. The detection of her sand is so important that she was able to find the disappearing Mu and the giant clam of the second mizukage several times. In the second part, Gaara's prowess can gather enough sand to protect the entire village of Sunagakure from Deidara's C3, as well as to help stop a giant meteorite. If sand is in short supply, Gaara can break down minerals in the ground to create more sand. He is able to manipulate sand even when it is saturated with water.

Although he can control normal sand, it takes more chakra to manipulate it, which tires him out at a rapid rate. Therefore, Gaara always keeps his own chakra-soaked sand with him, in a calabash also made of sand on his back, which also gives him a better attack rate. In addition, Gaara can crush the hardest minerals in the ground to create a shield in the shape of Shukaku's body or, in the anime, a spear in the shape of an arm for combat. He was able to incorporate gold dust into his sand, a feat that was previously only usable by his father.

Despite the withdrawal of Shukaku, Gaara can still use his sand as before. According to Sasuke at the top of Five Kage, Gaara's Absolute Defense is still very much alive, as well as his previous speed and pure attack power, as it protected Gaara and others from collapsing, blocking A's and Amaterasu's attacks (without being burned by the latter).

Gaara also demonstrated some collaborative techniques with Shukaku. After using Shukaku's wind release system, Gaara can also insert his sand into an opponent's body and use it to control and restrict their movements. By pooling their powers, Gaara and Shukaku can use a Junejutsu power seal, which forced a senjutsu-wearing Madara Uchiha to use the full Susanoo to escape.

Two years after the war, Gaara's power had increased dramatically, being able to defend his entire village from the massive meteorites that had broken loose from the falling moon, without any effort - creating multiple shields that protected Suna. As an adult, Gaara's sand proved powerful enough to block Otsutsuki Momoshiki's entire elemental barrage while protecting the other Kage.

Jinchuriki Transformations

In desperate situations, Gaara was able to take the form of Shukaku by depositing sand on his body, making him much more powerful than he already is. Shukaku's personality became more dominant during this transformation, increasing Gaara's murderous tendencies. Once the transformation was complete, Gaara adopted a human-sized version of Shukaku, in which he relied on his brute strength to destroy everything around him.

If needed, Gaara could almost instantly create a human-sized version of Shukaku, if the human-sized form failed. In this form, he remained deep inside the copy of Shukaku, safe from harm, though unable to move. When he needed Shukaku's full power, Gaara used his feint sleep technique, which forced him to sleep and allowed Shukaku to take full control. To do this, however, Gaara had to emerge from within the copy, leaving him open to attack for the duration of the technique.

Over time, he began to control Shukaku better, so that he could suppress his personality on his own towards the end of the anime's pre-Shippuuden filler arcs. At the beginning of the second part, Gaara was even able to use Shukaku's arms to attack many times without losing control of himself. However, this could have simply been his best control over the sand in action.

Transformation of nature

Gaara can use the nature transformations Wind Release, Lightning Release and Earth Release. He could mix his wind chakra with his sand techniques to increase their defense, power and speed.

Taijutsu

Although he almost never uses taijutsu as a combat element, Gaara showed incredible reaction speed against regular taijutsu users, as he was able to react instantly at a time when Rock Lee was closing his eyes and completely evade his high-level taijutsu attacks while having enough accuracy to position himself directly behind Lee. He also showed considerable stealth skill and mastery of the body flicker technique, able to sneak up on Sasuke in their first encounter without the Uchiha noticing. Gaara also showed some physical strength, even without transforming into Shukaku, as he was able to easily push Temari away with one punch, despite her injury. In the anime, when he became Kazekage, Gaara received extensive training in taijutsu from the specialist Shira, which allowed him to fight on equal terms with the instructor and even send him flying with a single kick.

Other skills

He also showed that he was a good teacher in the anime, teaching Matsuri how to use the johyo when he learned that she was afraid of weapons. In the second part, Gaara also showed that he was a very analytical and skilled tactician. He proved this when he managed to defeat the second Mizukage by formulating a way to counter the explosion of the Mizukage clone. Like many Suna shinobi, Gaara is skilled in Sealing Tag, using his sand instead of cloth. He has also shown the ability to use wind transformation, although this was only seen when he transformed into Shukaku.

During the Fourth Shinobi War, Naruto expressed his belief that Gaara retained the best defense of all, later able to block a barrage of strikes from Madara Uchiha's full sword, Susanoo. Gaara's sand powers were so strong that his father thought he had completely transformed into Shukaku and was later surprised to find that this was not the case. Gaara was able to quickly maneuver his sand over his father's Golden Dust, despite its superior weight. and stop a huge meteorite. Gaara's sand is apparently the only ninjutsu-based substance that cannot be absorbed. He can even block powerful explosions the moment they occur despite their enormous power, protecting his village and the division respectively.
