Apparence
At the time of his debut at the Final Selection, Genya was a short young man with large inward slanted eyes. The space where his eyebrows would have been is constantly furrowed, which gave him an angry appearance at all times. His hair was styled in a fashionable cut, with only a small tuft of messy black hair growing on top of his head. He also had a large jagged scar running down his right cheekbone from his ear to his nose.
In his first appearance, Genya wore a sleeveless purple yukata over a plain black long-sleeved shirt.
Later, when he is seen again in Butterfly Domain, Genya has taken on a much wilder appearance, having undergone a growth spurt that has put him at nearly six feet tall. His hair is also much longer, worn in a more mohawk style, the strands much longer and visible around his neck. It is also noted that he has become more muscular and has gained many more scars all over his body.
After the Blacksmith Village Arc, his hair acquires bright yellow tips.
After becoming a Demon Slayer, his outfit changed to a dark olive green version of the Demon Slayer uniform, on which he still wore his old purple yukata.
Personality
Genya was initially a rude and ill-tempered individual; a "lone wolf" who refused help from others and showed no interest in being polite or having manners. During the Final Selection, he brutally handled Kanata Ubuyashiki by grabbing her hair and yelling at her. His bad temper and impetuous way of speaking strongly resembled that of his older brother, Sanemi.
He became more open to cooperation during the battle against Hantengu, a higher rank demon, where he worked alongside Tanjiro Kamado, Mitsuri Kanroji and Nezuko Kamado. After a while, he learned to become more sociable and less rude to others, especially to Tanjiro and his friends.
Sanemi's refusal to acknowledge Genya also made him insecure as he realized how weak he was compared to his companions. Nevertheless, he did everything he could to help his allies, even if it horribly maimed him in the process. Despite his brother's harsh rebukes, he didn't blame him, a belief reinforced by Tanjiro and eventually Sanemi himself.
History
Past
Genya belonged to a family of seven children with a hardworking mother who never slept and an abusive father who beat her and her children. Although her father often beat both Genya's mother and siblings, her mother always protected them; he admired her very much, calling her mother "incredible. His father was hated among the villagers and was eventually stabbed to death by an unknown assailant. After that, Sanemi and Genya vowed to protect their siblings and mother together.
One day, their mother did not return home and the older brother Sanemi went to look for her. As suspicion and worry began to cross the children's minds, as their mother "was never this late before". Genya did her best to reassure them, saying they were "tired" and advised her siblings to go to sleep. Alone and unprotected, a sudden loud knock was heard from their door. Four of his siblings ran to the door despite Genya's protests and warnings that it might not be their mother, but before he could react, the door was opened and they were immediately cut off. At that moment, Genya's cheek was cut, forming a scar that will cross his face in the future. In the ensuing panic, Genya watched helplessly as the dark figure he assumed to be a wolf attacked them. Before he could attack Genya, Sanemi attacked him through the window in the streets below and ordered Genya to run away.
Seeing his siblings bloodied and subconsciously aware that they were already dead but unable to treat it completely, Genya tried to temporarily slow the bleeding by applying pressure to their wounds and then going to a doctor to treat them. However, he soon came upon Sanemi holding a knife and with their dead mother at his feet. Genya, in confusion and panic, called Sanemi a murderer and cradled their mother's body in his arms as she dissolved into the rising sun.
Later, Genya realized his mistake and decided to join the demon slayers to try to reconcile his relationship with his brother. Although he discovered that he had no talent for breath styles, he found that he could eat demons and gain demonic abilities. He was discovered by the Pillar of Rock, Gyomei Himejima. Since Genya could not use breaths, Gyomei did not make him his Tsuguko, but he still decided to train him. At one point, he found Sanemi and tried to apologize, but Sanemi rejected him and said that he had no brother. After that, Genya decided to become a Pillar in order to find a connection with his brother.
Synopsis
Final Selection Bow
Genya participated in the Final Selection exam, managing to survive the seven-day trial. He impatiently demanded the receipt of his Nichirin sword, angrily striking both his raven and Kanata when his demand was not met. Tanjiro intervened, threatening to break his arm if he didn't let go of Kanata immediately. When Genya challenged him instead, Tanjiro obliged, leaving the angry youth to nurse his broken limb. Kiriya Ubuyashiki, undeterred by the brutal treatment his sister received, simply continues with his instructions.
Arc Train de l'Infini
Later, at Butterfly Domain under unknown circumstances, Genya intentionally hit Tanjiro, ignoring his salvation afterwards. While training with Gyomei, he later received the report of Kyojuro Rengoku's death via his Liaison Raven.
Arc Village des Forgerons
Genya later appeared in the blacksmith village, ignoring Mitsuri when she asked her name - though out of shyness rather than spite - and is found by Tanjiro in the hot springs. Before realizing Tanjiro is present, the scarred youth pulled out a tooth and threw it, accidentally hitting Tanjiro with it. He turned around when his name was called, angrily told his fellow demon slayer to drop dead and plunged his head into the hot water when he persisted in talking with him. Genya also did not show up for any meals, having told the villagers that he would not eat at all. When Tanjiro went to bring him leftovers, he was not in his room.
A few days later, Genya listened with impatient anger as Tanjiro explained the situation with Hotaru Haganezuka and the rusty Nichirin sword, exclaiming that he didn't care and that Tanjiro shouldn't talk to him as if he were his friend. He reminded his companion that he had broken his arm, told him not to call him by his first name, broke the rice cracker Tanjiro had given him and told him to get out. He kept quiet when Tanjiro showed him his regrown tooth, telling him he had to see things, but he was disgusted when his companion showed him the tooth in question. Telling him to throw it away, the scarred youth kicked Tanjiro out of his room.
Genya appeared during Tanjiro and Nezuko's battle with Hantengu, pointing his gun at the form wielding the staff of the higher rank, Sekido. He fired a bunch of bullets, which completely decapitated Sekido but failed to do so completely with Karaku. Moving to finish the job with his Nichirin sword, Genya ignored Tanjiro's advice, proceeding to decapitate Karaku. The two demons became four and Genya was stabbed in the chest by the spear-wielding Hantengu, Aizetsu.
Aizetsu tried to pull Genya's spear out to attack Nezuko, but couldn't do it. Genya shot at the surprised demon, blowing its head off. He noted that the headless demon began to release its spear, resulting in a horrible wound across its chest. Genya started to pray, dodged another attack from his opponent and attacked the Aizetsu from behind. However, Sekido intervened using his electricity and Aizetsu attacked him once more, this time managing to smash him against a wall. Undeterred, Genya began to pray again, answering his opponent's question about what he is by introducing himself, promising to kill Aizetsu.
Genya manages to defeat his opponent, piercing him to a tree and ripping his head off. He turns to face Tanjiro, his appearance now resembling that of a demon, then grabs him and tells him not to push his luck, as he would kill the higher rank. He continues to deny Tanjiro's defeat of the top rank 6 and declares that he will become a Hashira before him. When Tanjiro happily accepts this, even offering his support, Genya tries to call his bluff, only to see in his comrade's eyes that he is telling the truth. They were then interrupted by an electric attack from Sekido, Tanjiro heading towards the fifth body of the top rank, telling Genya not to attack Nezuko.
Genya headed northeast on Tanjiro's instruction to find the fifth Hantengu, noting with frustration that he still couldn't see it, only to notice it: a small version of the original Hantengu form, only the size of a rat. He shot at his little foe, then tried to cut off its head with his blade, only for it to break. After firing another shot at the tiny Hantengu, he discovers that his tactic would not work. Sekido ambushes him from behind and Genya only has time to apologize to Sanemi in his mind for "what happened back then," noting that he only wanted to become a Pillar so that his brother would accept him.
Fortunately, he is saved at the last second by Tanjiro and Nezuko, but after Hantengu's hatred combines forcefully with his other aspects in Zohakuten, he attacks Tanjiro. Before Genya can shoot the demon, Zohakuten uses his Blood Power to turn the trees into dragons. When Tanjiro proclaims his hatred for the demon and his mentality-that demons protected themselves from humans who stalked them, even though they regularly attacked and consumed humans-Genya is shocked that the nice guy has anger in him.
When Mitsuri arrives and starts fighting Zohakuten, he goes to protect her when the demon stuns her and almost kills her. Mitsuri decides to hold Zohakuten while Genya, Tanjiro and Nezuko chase the main body of Hantengu. When they are strangled by the wood dragons, Genya simply eats the dragon to free herself and absorb its demonic abilities. After finally destroying the wood dragon and reaching Hatengu's protective orb, they discover that the wooden sphere is empty. When they spy the little demon, Genya throws a tree at the demon in his anger. It misses, however, so the three of them set off in pursuit again. Tanjiro, imitating Zenitsu Agatsuma's Lightning Breath, rushes at the demon with blinding speed.
However, Hantegu's resentment causes him to split again, creating a larger body around him while he is hidden in his heart. When Hantengu grabs Tanjiro, Genya goes to his rescue. He rips off the demon's hands and then rips off his arms, while Nezuko shoots him. Due to becoming a partial demon as a result of their consumption, the flames begin to hurt him, forcing him to retreat so that the fire does not spread to him. Hantengu, Nezuko and Tanjiro fall from a cliff. Genya, seriously wounded, is unable to help further in the fight. After Tanjiro finally kills the demon and Nezuko reveals her resistance to the sun, everyone celebrates and even Genya smiles.
Bow Pillar Training
Genya and Tanjiro meet at Sanemi's training. Genya starts to apologize but is stopped by Sanemi who says that he doesn't have a brother and should just quit the army. Genya then says that he ate demons to get power. This makes Sanemi angry as he tries to hit Genya but Tanjiro pushes Genya away and saves him. Both of them are then forbidden to be near Sanemi.
They then meet later at Gyomei's training where Tanjiro apologizes to Genya but is shaken. Genya calls Himejima a horrible teacher and talks to Tanjiro about repetitive movements. This allows Tanjiro to finally move the rock.
Infinite Dimensional Fortress Bow
Genya, confused by his surroundings, runs through the castle until he encounters Kokushibo and a badly injured Tokito. The slayer aims for the First Upper Moon, but he appears behind him, dismembering both his arms. Kokushibo recognizes that Genya has consumed demons before and cuts him in half. Kokushibo reveals that he has met a Slayer like Genya and attacks, but the Pillar of Wind interferes, saving his brother.
Sanemi questions him about why he had to join the army of Slayers, and says that he only wanted to protect him and make him live a long life. Sanemi, enraged, charges at Kokushibo.
Relations
Sanemi Shinazugawa
Sanemi is Genya's older brother and her only living brother. After a demon attack befell their family, Sanemi and Genya were the only ones to survive the incident. However, after Genya called his brother a "murderer", their relationship began to worsen and decline until the two split up and went their own way. It is revealed during the battle with Kokushibo that despite the whole incident, Sanemi still cared a lot about her younger brother and actually wanted him to lead a normal life without the threat of demons. Genya was moved to tears and apologized after hearing Sanemi's reasoning behind his rudeness. After their battle with Kokushibou, Genya again apologized for blaming Sanemi and thanked his brother for protecting him before succumbing to his wounds and collapsing into dust, leaving Sanemi stricken with grief.
Tanjiro Kamado
Tanjiro prevents Genya from bullying Kanata. At first, Genya treated Tanjiro like an annoying pest and didn't even talk to him. This did not deter Tanjiro who continued to try to connect with Genya, annoying her. However, throughout their fight with Hantengu, Genya began to befriend Tanjiro and gained respect for him. Tanjiro also tried to repair Genya's relationship with Sanemi, although his actions earned him a mouthful from the higher-ups. Genya then taught Tanjiro how to perform repetitive actions during Gyomei's pillar training. Tanjiro cries upon hearing of Genya's death.
Gyomei Himejima
In the data book, it is said that Gyomei took Genya as his "stepson". The 2nd Fanbook gives more information about their relationship. It revealed that Genya was saved by Gyomei when he became uncontrollable after eating a demon. Genya stubbornly decided to follow Gyomei and continuously asked Gyomei to take the former as Tsuguko. Although Genya was not talented and had a bad temper, he got along well with Gyomei, the latter recognizing him for his honesty and willingness.
Inosuke Hashibira
Genya is not often seen interacting with Inosuke. Once Genya befriends Tanjiro Kamado, he usually respects his friends. But, in the manga, he is seen fighting with Inosuke because Inosuke made fun of him because he couldn't do breath styles (that's why he uses a gun instead).
Skills & Competencies
Demonic Transformation: By consuming the living flesh of a demon, Genya could temporarily gain demonic attributes. Depending on the strength of the individual, he could gain regeneration and physical strength equal to one. In this form, Genya is able to briefly subdue Aizetsu.
- Strengthening of the Upper Fourth Moon: After consuming the wood created by Zohakuten, Genya had enough strength and speed to throw 3 trees in quick succession. In his battle with Kokushibo, the full extent of his demonization by eating some of the flesh of the Fourth Superior rank is shown that despite Kokushibo viciously forking him in the abdomen and cutting off both of his arms, he still did not die, showing that as a true demon, Genya could only be killed by decapitation.
-
Enhancement of the First Upper Moon: By eating Kokushibo's hair, Genya's demonic abilities were further enhanced, as seen when he was able to reattach his severed body within seconds and is even able to intercept Muzan Kibutsuji's telepathic communication. By eating a piece of the top rank's flesh sword, Genya even began to adopt many of the physical characteristics of top rank one, such as his eyes and hair. Later, the full extent of his enhanced demonic abilities is shown that even when he is bifurcated and half of his head is sliced cleanly in half, Genya is not only still alive and conscious, but still has the strength to activate his Blood Power. However, after succumbing to his severe wounds, Genya looked very much like a true demon, disintegrating into ashes.
Flesh Pistol: Genya showed the ability to detach his cells and merge them with his pistol, the pistol having the same characteristics as the Kokushibo sword of having multiple eyes on the barrel and muzzle, presumably increasing its accuracy and power.
Repetitive Action: A technique taught to him by Gyomei Himejima to help him compensate for his lack of talent and ability to use breathing styles. This technique mainly focuses on Genya repeating a set of words or phrases that help him focus properly on his task, keep his mind clear and block out pain. For Genya, he repeats a series of prayers from the Amida Sutra to help him focus and strengthen his mind, as seen where he used this technique to focus his mind after being mortally wounded while fighting Hantengu's Aizetsu clone and, to some extent, replicate the effects of Total Focus Breathing.
Blood Power
Due to having eaten the flesh and cells of at least two higher ranks (Kokushibo and Hantengu), Genya had apparently developed his own blood demon art while in the midst of the battle against the higher rank one. Like Nezuko's Blood Power, Genya's was also designed to fight and do damage to other demons.
-
Wooden Flesh Bullets: by eating the cells of the top one and top four ranks, Genya had developed a unique technique where he merges his demon-transformed cells with his solar steel bullets and weapon, which when fired, the direction and speed of the bullets could be freely manipulated by Genya to easily bypass obstacles between the bullet and the intended target, as seen when his bullets moved around Kokushibo's sword, burying themselves directly into his flesh. Once inside its target, the bullets can immediately transform into a gigantic tree similar to the tree-like creatures of the higher rank four Zohakuten form, then tangle and wrap around the intended target, paralyzing them.
- Blood Roots: Genya could further alter her built-in flesh bullets by making them root inside her target and suck the blood out of demons inside their bodies, preventing them from activating their own Blood Power.
Fighting Style
Expert Marksman: Genya has exceptional skill in handling his double-barreled shotgun, using it effectively in combat with the top ranks four and one.
Expert Swordsman: Before opting for a flesh pistol, Genya's primary weapon was a short crimson Katana, and it was implied that he was competent enough to use it against demons.
Equipment
Crimson Flesh Gun: Genya possesses a double-barreled western shotgun that he uses proficiently for both close and distant combat. The bullets he uses are made of scarlet iron sand and scarlet ore, allowing him to kill demons without a blade.
Small Crimson Katana: Genya also carries a shorter Crimson Katana with two hollow ovals that straddle its core and are a dull shade of brown for his handguard.
Anecdotes
- Genya's last name contains the kanji for "immortality" (不死 shinazu) and "river" (川 gawa). His first name contains the kanji for "mysterious" (玄 gen) and "all the more, more and more" (弥 ya).
- Genya is one of the few characters in the series who does not primarily use a sword and is the only demon slayer named who cannot use any of the breath styles.
-
- Instead, he uses a technique called repetitive action, which acts as a substitute for the Integral Concentration Breath. It is important to note that this technique was taught to Genya by Gyomei, who is himself a breath user, which implies that it is possible to use both techniques together.
- Generally, Genya is better at handling a weapon than a sword, as he is very good at hitting targets.
- Kokushibo mentions that Genya is not the first demon slayer he has met who has consumed demons to gain power.
- It seems that Genya is shy with women, blushes and loses the ability to speak with them. This is seen when interacting with the Pillar of Love, Mitsuri, and the girls who work at the Butterfly Estate.
- Due to her unique demon-eating powers, Genya regularly visits the Butterfly Estate for checkups.
- Genya ranked 15th in the second popularity poll with 2589 votes.
- Genya shares the same Japanese and English voice actors as Garfiel Tinsel from the anime Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World and shares the same Japanese voice actor for Liebe from Black Clover, Nishinoya from Haikyu!!, Bakugo from My Hero Academia and Ghiaccio from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
- At Kimetsu Academy, Genya is a 1st year student belonging to the Kabosu class. He is the ace of the shooting club, and despite his hair breaking the school rules, they let him keep it because he wouldn't be able to score with a shaved head. That's because he uses his hair to read the wind.
-
- He is the younger brother of math teacher Sanemi Shinazugawa. He once won 1st place in a contest, but his brother stormed the place and tore up his certificate, while shouting "Who cares about this shit?! Learn your fucking math!!!".
- His large body and angry behavior led to him being misunderstood and friendless. This changed after the competition incident with his brother, at which the students sympathized with Genya and became friends with him.
- Born on January 7th, his astrological sign is Capricorn.
