Hunter X Hunter: 10 things you should know about Gon!

Gon Freecs is the shonen protagonist of Hunter x Hunter, but he is much more complex and unique than one might expect.

Hunter x Hunter's assortment of characters is definitely one of the strengths of the series. Most fans appreciate the characters and their wild dynamics more than any other aspect about the series. The characters are, after all, the common denominator between all the essential attributes that build the Hunter x Hunter that fans love and care about.

Gon Freecs, the main character of the series, is one of the most controversial main characters in shonen history. Love him or hate him, there is too much going on around Gon. He is innocent but apathetic, happy but very vengeful. His complexity is head and shoulders above most shonen leads. What's even more striking is how he disguises his complexity for simplicity.

10/ He's Not As Innocent As You Think

Yes, Gon is not so innocent - or maybe it is. While it's true that he initially sells himself for your average energetic shonen protagonist, that doesn't continue for long. As the series progresses, fans learn that Gon's morals are about as vague as morals can get.

It's not every day that a 12-year-old seems completely apathetic to the darkness of the world. While most shonen leaders will react strongly to the injustices they witness, Gon is just like one of many.

9/ Gon Is A Complex Character

Gon is indeed one of the most complex characters in Hunter x Hunter. It's just that his complexity takes time to fragment. His transition is more vague, but once it is noticed, it can't go unnoticed.

Also, you can tell that Gon has entered his growth spurt in the latter part of the series. His development would surely have been scarier if the series had persisted.

8/ It Started as a Blank Canvas

One of the most interesting aspects of Gon is his initial kickoff. He was introduced completely empty in the front and out. No strong narrative was built to advance his character, as such, all opinions about him were based on semi-subjective viewpoints.

His story was unchallenged and his edges were unexplored, so he was released into the wild by himself. And even when his story and dreams were explained, he remained relatively bland - well, at least on the surface.

7/ Gon's Talent Is His Only Cheating Capacity

Unlike most shonen protagonists who start out with a hacking ability or two,Gon was not given such a privilege. Although his talent and growth potential are more than impressive, it doesn't give him an advantage over the first part of the story.

Shonen protagonists such as Naruto and Natsu started out with the nine-tail chakra and Igneel flames respectively. These abilities alone can give them a head start on the grand scheme of things.

6/ It has no influence on the overall plot

The plot and the main character usually become parallel to each other, feeding off each other and supplementing each other's statistics. This, for better or worse, does not apply to Hunter x Hunter. Gon's relationship to the plot of the series is simply unprecedented in the shonen scene.

He does not massively affect the plot, but conversely, the plot affects him. This means that even without the existence of the character known as Gon, the plot could progress, albeit a little differently.

5/ Gon Follows His Instinct Rather Than Logic

The world of Hunter x Hunter is a world to marvel at. Here, everything requires calculation. Those with empty or non-existent brains won't survive much, and that's the way it is.

But that being said, there is a group of characters who bulldoze through anything that stands in their way relying only on strength and instinct. Gon belongs to this group of people; his emotions are what propel him forward.

4/ Gon's Nen Capacity Is Not So Impressive

The Nen power system is publicly recognized as the most complex power system in the anime scene. Often, it even gets boring with the complexity it becomes.

With such a fantastic power system, Gon, the protagonist of the series, should have a special privilege, right? Wrong. His Jajanken is not even in the top 10 of the most powerful / unique Nen abilities in the series.

3/ It is a generically unique shonen protagonist

Shonen protagonists are, in the end, shonen protagonists. No matter how much they deviate from the norm, they will never escape their status. No matter how unique they are, they will remain true to the overall formula.

Gon can be compared to Luffy in a way. At the very least, his vague sense of justice and selfishness resemble the latter. He is unique in a sense, but in a generic way.

2/ Gon's goal is not as great as its counterparts

While Naruto wants to become the Hokage and Luffy wants to become the Pirate King, Gon only wants to meet his father. More precisely, he wants to know the exact reason why his father left him.

Normally, a protagonist would only reach his goal at the end of the series, but Gon has already accomplished his. What is to come on his schedule is unknown to the fans.

1/ Gon Is Far From Being The Favourite Character Of The Series' Fans

In terms of popularity, the main character often receives the most recognition from fans. That's because the main characters are often the ones who enjoy the most well-cooked story. The more you know about a character and their situation, the more likely they are to sympathize with them.

As usual, that's not how it goes in Hunter xHunter. There are at least a handful of characters that fans find more interesting than Gon. The only reason this is the case is because the author doesn't give him much special privilege as far as the story goes.
