Hunter x Hunter: 10 facts about Kurapika
Hunter x Hunter has countless great characters. While Gon has his strengths, Kurapika has strong arguments to deserve to be the main character.
Hunter x Hunter is one of the strongest and most complex shonen tales out there. In a manga story that started as a book adventure, Yoshihiro Togashi quickly turns things into a cerebral spy story where different parties, villains and moral codes clash with complex powers and high concept themes.
At the forefront of this story is Gon Freecss, the son of one of the world's greatest hunters who set out to follow in his old man's footsteps and find him. However, fans have always been curious about another, arguably more interesting story that takes place with one of Gon's friends, Kurapika.
On a story of revenge that is both endearing and suspenseful, Kurapika makes a pretty convincing case to deserve to be the main character instead of Gon. This list will review the 10 things you didn't know about the most enigmatic character in Hunter x Hunter anime.

10/ Kurapika: A Sadder Story
The sad story is something that has defined and revolutionized graphic novels for decades. For a while, comics simply had their characters go on adventures or be given great abilities, without much meaningful context as to why readers should be invested.
Hunter x Hunter really feels like it follows that same tradition, where Gon's story feels like a simple adventure, while his compatriot, Kurapika, has a much more defined and compelling story that has helped fans connect with him much more. Although Gon is a bright and shiny face, the tragic story of the Kurta clan and Kurapika's calm demeanor managed to capture people's attention.

While Kurapika certainly has a more engaging story behind him, it makes his story much more narrow. Gon has the major advantage in that his simple journey to find his father could very well take him anywhere, leaving viewers more hype than confusion as to how the story got where it is.
There's an innate potential for growth that more easily retains the sense of adventure that defines shonen stories, while helping Togashi create the wild, detailed world he really wanted.
8/ Kurapika: A More Interesting Motivation
While Kurapika's story may be a niche, it is something that fans could hold on to more tightly. Where many fans may like Gon's story, Kurapika's story is something that people can really enjoy and intrigue. Being the last survivor of the Kurta clan, Kurapika becomes a hunter so that he can track down and defeat the very organization that killed his family, the Ghost Troop.
Not only are the operations and members of the Ghost Troop some of the most interesting and terrifying in history, but the path to find them takes Kurapika into some dark places. As Gon and Killua explore a video game island, Kurapika infiltrates a mafia organization with ties to the black market organ trade that is now trading in his family's precious eyes.
7/ Gon: Simple Feeding Set
In terms of powers, Gon has the classic, tried and true abilities that have generated fan hype for decades. As an Enhancement-type Nen user, Gon is able to channel his Nen either around his body or to a particular body part and enhance his strength.
This leaves room for more technical martial arts battles and, if the story requires it, explosive displays of power. While not the most complex ability, Gon being able to punch a hole in the wall and even through an entire forest is very rewarding.

6/ Kurapika: Unique Power Package
While Gon is an iconic strong boy in the anime, his abilities are just another drop in the long sea of shonen heroes who can just hit it out of the park. Kurapika's powers, on the other hand, could easily be found in any range. As a Conjurer, Kurapika creates Nen chains that each carry distinct but versatile properties that are useful on and off the battlefield.
They can locate people, restrict the Nen abilities of the Ghost Troop, attack enemies, and even heal wounds. When his eyes turn scarlet, Kurapika can even use an ability called "Emperor Time", which allows him to use all types of Nen at 100% efficiency. This makes him one of the few characters in the world who can do this and a special Nen user among all Nen users.
5/ Gon: Adventurous History
As mentioned before, Gon's motivation allowed him to take on a much more adventurous story. Having the will and freedom to go almost anywhere, Gon has led many unique and entertaining stories. He is trained in the endless tower and martial arts competition, Heaven's Arena.
He explored the world of the Nen-based video game, Greed Island. He helped lead a secret battle against an advanced mutant race of ants. With a heart of gold and a nose for adventure, Gon can continually take the story to bigger and bigger places.
4/ Kurapika: Mysterious and Serious History
While Gon's tale can be more adventurous and even light-hearted in places, Kurapika's is much grittier and deadlier. It took several episodes/chapters for Gon's adventure to get really dark, while Kurapika's plot immediately took him into the underbelly of organized crime. There, he served as a bodyguard to one of the most elite mafia bosses and his organ-collecting daughter.
Once Gon's part of the story was over, the series revealed kurapika looking at various pots of his clan's eyes. How did he get so many? What did he have to do to get them back? Fans have only just gotten a taste of how cerebral and clever a Kurapika story can be with the current arc, but fans are still wondering what he did in the underworld.
3/ Gon: Best Outsider
It also helps fans connect to Gon's plight, as he is constantly overwhelmed by the next obstacle and puzzle. Gon is a child living in a world of killer, competitive, conniving adults. When he's not busy trying to get stronger, Gon tries to create simple but effective plans to get around his much more experienced opponents. This helps create interesting and suspenseful scenarios, ones that leave viewers wondering if Gon will actually win.

2/ Kurapika : Reliable Leader
Since Kurapika is not as simple or childlike as Gon, he makes great use of his intelligence and creativity as a character. Even without his powers, Kurapika is a reliable tactician and leader who even helped Gon and Leorio at the beginning of their journey and quickly took over his boss's guard when he joined the mafia.
In the current story, Kurapika becomes the newest member of the Zodiacs whose expertise in the Ghost Troop and Nen has become incredibly useful in gaining support and creating advantages on a tight battlefield.
1/ Gon : Inspirational character
While Kurapika can be a much easier person to turn to for help and advice, Gon often surprises the characters in the story and the fans with his strange clarity and humility. He's someone who doesn't want much and doesn't let the world corrupt him (at least at the beginning of the story).
Gon's constant willingness to find a solution for everyone is constantly encouraging and always surprising with his results. It is this attitude that helps fans connect with both him and the series, which makes his emotional turn later in the Ant Chimera arc all the more tragic and meaningful. Gon is a face that everyone wants to believe in, and that has helped him become the de facto protagonist for most of the series.
