Hunter x Hunter: 14 things you don't know about Hisoka
Hunter x Hunter is full of strange characters, and Hisoka Morow is among the strangest. Here are some facts about her that fans often miss.
Yoshihiro Togashi's Hunter x Hunter is a playground featuring many strange characters, but no one is stranger than Hisoka Morow. In fact, he is such a confusing being that no one knows how his last name is really spelled. Is it Morow, Morrow, Morou or Moro? We can't give you an infallible answer, but the ambiguity certainly correlates with the magician's personality.
Between his ridiculous bloodlust and questionable moments of "excitement," most viewers might find themselves too clueless about the buffoon to explore beyond what they see on screen.
Hisoka is a bag of mystery and one of Hunter xHunter's most intriguing characters, with his incredible depth of character ensuring that fans can never know enough about him.

14/ Hisoka is an Antagonist But Not Entirely Evil
As one of the main antagonists in the overall story, Hisoka is often seen as evil by many viewers. Without a doubt, he has killed people he considered unworthy of his time and attention. Yet Hisoka never hurts others for the sake of it.
If someone stands in his way, he will act accordingly and get rid of them quickly. Only those he considers worthy of being crushed face this fate at his hands, like the protagonist Gon. In simple terms, Hisoka is an amoral character.
13/ Hisoka's hair color is inconsistent in the anime
The 1999 version of Hunter x Hunter is different from the 2011 version in many ways. Like all the other characters, there are many differences in Hisoka's appearance, including her hair. For example, the 1999 version of the anime showed Hisoka's hair as blue throughout the series.
In contrast, the 2011 anime depicted her hair as red at some points and magenta at others. Like her hair, her eye color also had similar inconsistencies between the two versions, as her eyes were blue in the 1999 version and yellow in the 2011 version.

12/ Hisoka Used Almost All Types Of Nen
Hisoka's main type of Nen is Transmutation, and this power has appeared regularly whenever he uses his aura for abilities such as Bungee Gum. Interestingly, in addition to transmutation, Hisoka can also use other types of Nen, such as Conjuration, which he uses in Texture Surprise.
Aside from these two types, Hisoka also showed decent skills with Enhancement, Emission, and Manipulation Nen, which shows how incredibly balanced he is as a fighter.
11/ He's Only Rivaled By Killua (In Terms Of Clothing)
Hisoka is a man of many talents, but he also has many different outfits. Observant fans have been aware of this for years, but casual or new viewers might not realize that the magician changes his appearance at the beginning of each story arc. While his overall look has remained consistent, colors are often changed and an accessory or two would be added. Hisoka also lets his hair down from time to time, like in the Greed Island arc.
The only character that challenges Hisoka in this category is Killua Zoldyck. The young assassin has changed his look so often that he has become somewhat of a meme as a result. Who said that all anime characters were limited to one outfit?
10/ Why Pariston Hill's Japanese Voice Sounds Familiar
Hisoka and Pariston Hill have one thing in common, though it has nothing to do with the Hunter x Hunter story itself. Hiroki Takahashi, the clown voice actor from the 1999 series, dubbed the voice behind Pariston Hill in the 2011 adaptation.
It's worth noting that Takahashi is also a singer, which means that a quick Google search can lead interested listeners to the music performed by the voice actor from 1999's Hisoka.
9/ Her Interest In Machi Is More Flagrant In The Manga
In the anime, Hisoka asked Machi, a member of the Phantom Troupe, to have dinner with him after his fight with Kastro. It came out of left field for many viewers and made them wonder who this woman was and why the wizard apparently loved her so much.
It turns out that the HxH manga painted a slightly different storyline that was eventually rewritten for television. In the print, Hisoka had actually asked Machi to spend the night with him, skipping the invitation to wine and dine completely.

8/ His Birthday Implies He Is The Fifth Protagonist
This is more of a fan theory than a confirmed fact, but it's impossible to dismiss the numbers as mere coincidence. The four protagonists seen above all share a curious detail about their birthdays. Leorio was born on March 3 (3/3), Kurapika's birthday is April 4 (4/4), Gon's fall on May 5 (5/5), and Killua's birth date is July 7 (7/7).
The numerically repetitive dates go up from three to seven with a glaring gap between Gon and Killua. However, Hisoka was born on June 6 (6/6), thus completing the sequence. For this reason, clever fans have decided that the jester is the unofficial fifth protagonist of the series.
7/ His Nen Hisoka's Name Comes From Gum
During one of his appearances in the 1999 version of the anime, Togashi said that Hisoka liked "Bungee Gum" as a child, but because his family was poor, he always chewed it until the flavor was gone. He then named his signature move after the gum.
This differs slightly from what fans said in the manga and the 2011 adaptation where Hisoka simply named Bungee Gum and Texture Surprise after his favorite brands of gum and candy, respectively. Whether or not Hisoka's family was poor is still up for debate, but it's likely that viewers and fans will never receive a definitive answer from Togashi.
6/ His Capacity Gives A Clue About His Personality
Hisoka's main Nen ability, known as Bungee Gum, is also called Elastic Love. This name is considered a reference to her personality because, just like gum - which can easily stick to something and yet be separated - Hisoka's attachment to someone can come out of nowhere but end in an instant.
His initial interest in Kastro is a great example of this, as Hisoka initially assumed that he had enormous potential, but unfortunately failed to live up to it, which ended Hisoka's interest in him.

5/ Hisoka's Hunter Exam Introduction Has Been Published - Twice
The 2011 Hunter x Hunter anime features an intriguing storyline involving Hisoka and an unnamed character. It takes place in the middle of the first phase of the Hunter exam. As the camera focuses on the couple, we see the budding hunter's arms disintegrate into flower petals. He had bumped into Hisoka without apologizing, setting off the unfortunate altercation.
This encounter did not happen at all in the 1999 adaptation. Instead, the magician had pinned the candidate against a wall, but eventually let him be. The original result, depicted in the manga, was leaps and bounds more violent: the clown had retaliated by mercilessly cutting off the man's arms.
4/ He Is Not The Only Clown In Togashi's Arsenal
Yoshihiro Togashi is the creator of Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter, so it is logical that there are parallels between the two. For example, the Suzuki of Hakusho sometimes took the form of a clown with both a small tear and a heart painted on his face.
Aside from the physical attributes, Suzuki also enjoyed remarkable card throwing skills. This reminded viewers of their favorite morally ambiguous clown in HxH. Whether these two characters were influenced by the Joker (another fan theory) or not remains to be confirmed.
3/ The Most Popular Hisoka Dubbing Actor Appears In All The Other Anime You Love
Daisuke Namikawa, Hisoka's most prominent voice actor, is also the voice behind another Togashi creation: Prince Baka from Level E. However, the iconic actor has appeared in just about every other top-tier franchise or anime you can think of.
Namikawa's impressive resume also included popular anime such as Naruto, Boruto, Bleach, One Piece, Demon Slayer and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. He even dubbed Sekiro from the award-winning video game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twicede 2019. Many fans are bound to hear the 2011 voice actor Hisoka no matter what you watch or play, as long as it is subtitled.

2/ The Recurrence Of The Number 4 Is Symbolic
Hisoka's Hunter exam number badge bore the number 44. He also joined the Ghost Troop after defeating Omokage, which automatically made the magician the No. 4 member of the crew. If Japanese superstitions are to be taken into consideration, this may not be a minor coincidence.
In Japan, the number 4 was considered unlucky because the word for "four" is remarkably similar to the word for "death" in their language. Killing is one of Hisoka's specialties, so the number association is very appropriate.
1/ Hisoka's Past Was Written By The Creator Of Tokyo Ghoul
Hisoka's Past is a prequel to Hunter x Hunter that focuses on the famous magician and his life before the events of Togashi's series. A notable and fascinating aspect is that this one-shot was written and illustrated by none other than Sui Ishida, the creator of Tokyo Ghoul.
Hisoka's Past was first published as an April Fool's joke posted on Twitter. However, the project ended up being officially released later. While not exactly canon, Togashi admitted that he was a fan of Ishida's vision and mentioned that he would like to tie it into his own story someday. However, that's unlikely to happen anytime soon due to HxH's eternal hiatus dilemma.
