Apparence

Inosuke Hashibira

Inosuke is a young man of normal height, with light skin and an extremely muscular body for his age, possessing large and defined muscles, especially on his stomach and arms. Contrasting this figure, his face is very feminine and beautiful, with large light green eyes with long lashes. Her eyebrows are thin, and her mouth small. His thick black hair extends past his shoulders, turning blue at the tips and forming an unruly fringe that falls just above his eyes.

Inosuke wears an altered version of the Demon Slayers uniform, consisting of baggy hakama pants, dyed a dark blue-gray, which he ties around his waist with a thick belt of animal hair. The thick material that normally surrounds the legs is replaced by what appear to be long fur socks that expose his heels and toes, which also surround the base of the sandals he wears. His most conspicuous feature is the gray boar's head that he wears as a mask, with the eyes removed so that he can see, which is later revealed to belong to his adopted boar mother.

Personality

Inosuke is a very angry and proud young man who likes to think that he is the strongest in everything, constantly confronting most people he meets and desiring respect and praise from others for his talents. This often leads him into unnecessary danger, as he tends to overestimate his abilities in comparison to whoever he is facing and refuses to accept defeat, as can be seen when Giyu Tomioka has to tie him to a tree after his duel with the Spider Demon Father to prevent him from challenging the Pillar when he is severely injured. This constant need to be the best also causes Inosuke to be very defiant, often trying to incite others, mainly Tanjiro Kamado, to fight him, although in the latter's case, he fails because of Tanjiro's benevolent nature.

Having been raised by the boars, Inosuke does not understand human interactions well, at least at the beginning, since he frequently thinks that the people they approach him want to tie him up and does not seem to understand the kindness that others give him.

However, as the story progresses, Inosuke is more and more influenced by Tanjiro and becomes more accustomed to affection and generosity, learning also to recognize the strength of other people than him and develops friendly feelings towards Tanjiro and Zenitsu Agatsuma, even if he still keeps his pride and his constant need of praise. He also begins to think more strategically in battle, using smarter tactics borrowed from more experienced Demon Slayers instead of running headlong into battle. Inosuke's sense of camaraderie improves greatly, as when he rushed to Muzan Kibutsuji, calling out the deaths of the Demon Slayers killed and maimed by the Demon Lord and demanding that he return everything he took from them, or else die as punishment for his crimes.

History

Past

Inosuke was raised by boars for much of his life before the Final Selection. It was later revealed that he was born into a family with a violent father and escaped from his father with his mother.

Afterwards, Inosuke-who was still a baby at the time, his mother was taken by Doma into his Paradise Faith cult. Kotoha liked to sing for Inosuke but apparently changed the words of the song every time. However, after discovering that Doma was eating his worshippers, Kotoha ran away with her son. Running aimlessly towards a human village, Kotoha finally found herself on top of a cliff. Seeing no way out, she made a last effort to save Inosuke by dropping him into the river below the cliff. She was then eaten by Doma. Later, Inosuke was discovered and raised by boars.

Synopsis

Before the Arcs

Before the final selection, a Demon Slayer meets Inosuke in the latter's mountain. The two competed to see who was stronger, with Inosuke being the winner and taking the Slayer's weapon as a reward. As a result, Inosuke learns more about demons and decides to join the Demon Slayer Army.

Final Selection Bow

Although Inosuke participates in the Final Selection at Mount Fujikasane, he is off-screen during the whole arc. His presence is evoked by Kagaya Ubuyashiki, when a raven announces the results of the selection.

Arc Maison aux Tambours

Inosuke had been wandering around the Kyogai drum house looking for a demon to kill to serve as a "catalyst" for him to become stronger, but due to the nature of Kyogai's blood demon arts, he became trapped for 3 days. He first appears when Zenitsu and Shoichi are looking for an exit, having been separated from Tanjiro and Teruko. Zenitsu opens a door that he thought was the way out, and desperately opens another one when the first door fails. Behind that door is Inosuke, who immediately rushes in and knocks down another door before running into the open hallway. Zenitsu is shaken, Shoichi judges him without a word.

Mount Natagumo Arch

After resting at the Wisteria House due to their injuries, they are summoned by Tanjiro's raven to head to Natagumo Mountain. Inosuke and Tanjiro rush up the mountain, with Zenitsu lagging behind due to his fear, after seeing another Demon Slayer asking for help. The Demon Slayer was then pulled back into the forest. After witnessing this, Inosuke acts as the vanguard and orders Tanjiro and Zenitsu to follow him. Tanjiro follows Inosuke while Zenitsu stays near the mountain, refusing to enter.

After meeting another demon slayer who was hiding from the demons, Inosuke and Tanjiro understand the current situation that the demon slayers started killing each other after entering the woods, due to the blood art of a demon that makes them puppets that can be controlled. After doing his best not to kill the controlled Demon Slayers, Inosuke uses his Beast Breathing, Seventh Form: Spatial Awareness to find the demon known as "Mother." Inosuke and Tanjiro manage to hook the controlled Demon Slayers to trees to immobilize them, however, the demon controlling them twists their necks, killing them after they are immobilized. With heavy hearts, they head to the demon's location, but are stopped by a headless puppet controlled by the demon.

During the battle with the headless puppet, Inosuke's haste injures and almost kills him. Fortunately, Tanjiro saves him and encourages Inosuke to fight with him. Even though Inosuke was not willing to do so, he is nevertheless able, thanks to Tanjiro's instructions, to cut the headless puppet diagonally. Inosuke is very competitive with Tanjiro, thinking that he can do anything Tanjiro can. Tanjiro defeats the demon known as "Mother" and Inosuke is badly injured, although he is not willing to admit it.

Tanjiro tries to make Inosuke come down from the mountain and he refuses. They see a demon girl, which Tanjiro could not smell because of the putrid smell around the mountains. The demon girl calls another demon called "Father", who is a big man with the face of a spider. He is a strong demon, but not a Twelve Kizuki, and Inosuke is staggering because of blood loss. Tanjiro is sent flying because of the demon's strength and yells at Inosuke not to die at any cost. Inosuke manages to cut off the demon's arm, making it climb trees to get rid of its skin and show an even bigger spider-like body. Inosuke tries to decapitate the demon with his Beast Breathing, Third Fang: Devour, but his blades break and he is strangled by the demon. Fortunately, Giyu shows up and kills "Father" with Water Breathing, Fourth Form: Striking Tide, saving Inosuke's life.

Inosuke, despite his injuries, tries to challenge Giyu but ends up getting tied up. This makes Inosuke's self-confidence fall and makes him think that he is not as good as he thinks. After the battle, Inosuke is then released from the ropes by the Kakushi, the team that deals with the aftermath of demon fighting.

Bow Recovery Training

Due to the injuries he suffered from "Father", Inosuke's throat was mutilated, so he was taken to Butterfly Mansion to heal alongside Tanjiro and Zenitsu, who climbed the mountain behind them and was almost turned into a spider. Humiliated by the way he lost, he apologizes to Tanjiro for being so weak.

Infinite Dimensional Fortress Bow

As Doma sends his Blood Demon Art, Scattering Lotuses to Kanao, at that moment, Inosuke suddenly breaks the ceiling of the room, protecting Kanao from Doma's attack with his Beast Breathing, Fifth Fang: Crazy Cutting. [3] He looks at Doma's eyes and notices that he's of higher rank 2, which he shouts, happily shouting that if he defeats the demon, he will become a Hashira and asking Kanao what his Hashira title should be. Inosuke notices Kanao's beaten face and asks, surprised, what happened, saying that Shinobu will get angry if she finds her Tsuguko in this state. Kanao remains silent, the boar-headed demon slayer realizes and asks her if Shinobu is dead, to which Doma replies that she is not; she will live in him for eternity because he "saved" her from her pain and suffering. Inosuke remembers Shinobu's kindness to him and swears to Doma that he will kill him as he rushes to the Top Rank with his Beast Breathing, Fourth Fang: Slice 'n' Dice.

Kanao yells at him not to breathe Doma's cold air as the demon notices how messed up his technique is. Doma tries to slice Inosuke's head with one of his fans, but the Demon Slayer moves away from him, launching himself off the flat edge of the fan and landing next to Kanao. He hands him his blade, which he had taken back from Doma, and tells him to never let go of it again. Doma smiles and compliments Inosuke's speed as he jumps towards him, and the two quickly engage in a quick fight, throwing breathing styles and bloody demon arts at an alarming rate. Inosuke kicks Doma in the stomach, sending him skidding backwards as he dislocates the joints in his right arm and prepares to swing his sword against the top rank's neck. He misjudges his swing and instead cuts Doma's eyes with his Beast Breathing, Ninth Fang: Extending Bendy Slash, and the demon laughs at his unusual technique as his knuckles shift.

Inosuke Hashibira

Doma calls Inosuke screwed up and says he's never met a kid like him before despite his long life, to which the Demon Slayer replies that it's obvious, since he's the great Inosuke. With incredible speed, Doma lunges forward and rips his mask off his head as he speaks, Inosuke, enraged, yells at him to give it back. The demon notices his face and says that he remembers Inosuke from somewhere, asking him if they had met before. Inosuke replies that they hadn't because he would remember meeting someone like Doma, but the higher rank insists that they had, running his finger through his skull and into his brain to try to refresh his memories.

Doma says he knew Inosuke's mother, as his cult took her in, but Inosuke denies having a mother since he was raised by boars. Doma laughs and says he must have a human mother since he is a human, and Inosuke yells at him to stop telling lies and give him back his boar mask, rushing to attack the demon again with Beast Breathing, Sixth Fang: Palisade Bite. His chest is cut twice by Doma's fans, who smiles slyly and tells him not to interrupt before sending him flying towards Kanao with his ice.

Doma then tells the story of Kotoha, Inosuke's mother, and how she and her baby joined Doma's cult only to run away after realizing that the demon was eating his followers. He explains that she met her death at the hands of Doma, who still believes he is saving her from his abusive household by eating her, but dropped her son off a cliff before the demon's attack in hopes that he would survive. Memories of her begin to return to Inosuke, who remembers the song she used to sing to him. Doma calls Kotoha stupid and unhappy, saying that there is no happy time in her life, and Inosuke, now enraged, thanks Doma for allowing him to remember that story and promises not only to kill him for what he did to Kotoha and Shinobu, but to put him through hell first.

Doma smiles again and tells Inosuke that there is no heaven or hell in this world because they are just fantasies created as a coping mechanism for weak humans. Inosuke shouts that he doesn't care if there is no hell because he can just make one himself, and tells Doma not to talk about his mother as if she is unhappy.

The demon sends his icy clouds at Inosuke, whom he blows with Beast Breathing, Tenth Fang: Whirling Fangs as Kanao prepares to use another breathing style to attack him from behind. Doma pushes her away with one of her fans and walks away. Inosuke yells at her to get back down so they can continue fighting. He replies that he can't, since Akaza has been defeated and he doesn't have time to play anymore, and uses his Blood Demon Art, Crystalline Divine Child to create smaller clones of himself for Inosuke and Kanao to fight instead. The clones attack the Demon Slayer duo with Doma's techniques as the real Doma begins to pull away, with the clones using his Blood Demon Art, Scattering Lotuses, Frozen Lotus and Cold White Princesses attacks to hold the duo back. Now at the exit, Doma thinks about how Inosuke managed to avoid breathing the freezing air of his techniques, and takes note of his heightened senses, saying that he will make sure to remember him. He watches their fight for a few seconds, observing how they use each technique so he can kill them quickly the next time they fight, then turns back to the door.

Doma decides to create three more clones to drop around the castle in order to kill the rest of the demon killers there, and hears Kanao yell to Inosuke that they need to hold out a little longer against the crystal children. He wonders what that might mean, but then dismisses it and starts reaching for the door handle.

Suddenly, Doma's face begins to melt. He falls to the ground, one of his arms breaks, and his crystal children begin to crack and disintegrate as he wonders what is going on. Inosuke asks if this is a trap but Kanao, having been told before the battle of Shinobu's plan to kill Doma, tells him that it isn't, and that the demon is being melted by the poison Shinobu had in his body when he consumed it. . She tells Inosuke to aim at her neck to finish her off and, in panic, Doma plays her last and most powerful card, Blood Demon Art, Rime - Water Lily Bodhisattva.

Doma's ice Bodhisattva statue slams his hand on the floor of the room, creating a small earthquake that sends Inosuke and Kanao into the air. Kanao notes that his technique lacks precision, and is clearly the Demon's last ditch effort to protect himself with what little energy he had left, deciding to use his final form, Flower Breathing, Final Form: Equinoxial Vermilion Eye to try and break through. The Doma statue grabs Inosuke in one of her hands as Kanao leaps to the top rank, slamming her blade against his neck. She is unable to cut him, so Inosuke, on the spot, offers and uses Beast Breathing, Sudden Throwing Strike to throw her blades at Kanao to give her the extra strength needed to cut Doma's neck. They succeed in decapitating him, Upper Rank Two and his statue begin to disintegrate.

Skills & Competencies

Natural Abilities

Improved touch: Having grown up in the mountains, Inosuke has developed an incredible sense of touch. He can feel small vibrations in the air. Using this ability, he can tell if someone is looking at him, especially if they have bad intentions. He can even find the exact location they are looking at, which gives him an advantage in battle.

Unarmed Combat: Inosuke is a very good fighter as he is able to match Tanjiro and even surpass him with his flexibility and unconventional fighting style that resembles "four legs of a beast" because of the way his blows come from such a low angle while being very fierce and incorporating other unorthodox moves, making him unpredictable and vicious.

Flexibility: Inosuke is very flexible, to the point where he can put his head between his legs. Later, he shows the ability to dislocate his arm to reach something, and even dislocate any joint in his body if he wishes.

Poison Resistance: Inosuke was able to resist and survive the poison of the Sixth Moon which is considered extremely deadly, suggesting that he is immune to poisons. However, as Aoi Kanzaki said, this also means that no medicine from Shinobu Kocho will work on him, so if he is exposed to a poison more powerful than Gyutaro's or a poison to which he has not developed resistance, they cannot be used as a remedy and he would be in greater danger of death.

Repetitive Action: A technique practiced by a few members of the body, it allows a person to obtain the same effects as the full concentration breathing by using predefined repeated movements or remembering intense feelings to open the five senses and increase their concentration, bringing out the physical powers of the body for a long time. It is possible to use repetitive action and full concentration breathing simultaneously, giving the user immense strength capable of rivaling higher-ranking demons. Inosuke quickly mastered this technique after watching Tanjiro and likes to rephrase "Boar's Charge" while doing so.

Fighting Style

Master Swordsman: Inosuke has demonstrated exemplary skill in the dual wielding of his sun katanas, allowing him to face and defeat demons on various occasions, even matching the members of the Twelve Demonic Moons. As he approached the infinity castle bow, Inosuke undeniably honed his fencing skills to the level of a Hashira, allowing him to keep up and face the second highest rank, Doma.

Techniques

Breath of the Beast: A style of breath distantly derived from Breath of the Wind and the personal creation of Inosuke Hashibira himself after living in the mountains and fighting for his survival. It also seems to be inspired by the boars he grew up with.

First Croc: Perforation

Inosuke stabs the neck of the target with his two swords.

Second Fang: Tear

One slashes a cross with his two swords, diagonally.

Third Croc: Shredding

Simultaneous slashes towards the enemy's throat.

Fourth Croc: Slicing

Multiple slashes in double diagonals with both swords.

Fifth Fang: Mad Slicer

Technique that cuts everything in all directions.

Sixth Fang: Irregular Bite

Simultaneous decapitation with his swords in both directions.

Seventh Move: Detection

Inosuke can identify the position of his enemies by sensing weak vibrations in the air. He usually sticks his swords into the ground to use this technique.

Eighth Fang: Boar Charge

Inosuke charges at full speed at his enemy, without even paying attention to his defense.

Ninth Fang: Divine Ripple Slash

Inosuke dislocates the joints of his arm to increase his attack strength.

Tenth Fang: The Spinning Fangs

Inosuke spins his swords.

The Thrown Strike

Inosuke throws his two swords at the enemy.

Relations

Tanjiro Kamado

Inosuke sees Tanjiro as a rival because of his competitive spirit. During the months they spent together, Tanjiro had a positive effect on Inosuke because, since meeting him, Inosuke became more open about the strength of other people, like the Pillars. Inosuke has also become more thoughtful and analytical about the abilities of his enemies. While Inosuke still sees Tanjiro as a rival, it is clear that he pays attention to him, and the two have become close friends.

Zenitsu Agatsuma

At their first meeting, it is distinctly represented their totally different personalities. Inosuke has an angry personality and is always ready to fight while Zenitsu tends to be a coward and prefers to avoid confrontation as when he was trying to protect Nezuko. Inosuke is constantly belittled by Zenitsu because of his lack of knowledge, even to the point of being insulted for his stupidity. Despite this, the two manage to overcome their dislike for each other, and team up to defeat powerful demons, like when they met Daki in the Pleasure District arc.

Shinobu Kocho

Shinobu quickly learns to manipulate Inosuke in a similar way to Tanjiro, understanding that she can convince him to do any task by doubting his ability to do it. Inosuke shows his usual disrespectful and aggressive attitude towards Shinobu, going as far as threatening to tear her chest when he feels insulted by her doubts. However, it is clear that after taking care of him when he was injured, Inosuke began to develop affection for Shinobu, vowing to avenge her death after learning that Doma absorbed her. Shinobu's pure behavior and his use of the "sworn promise" with Inosuke inadvertently reminded the latter of buried memories of his mother. We also notice that Shinobu is one of the few people whose name Inosuke never forgets.

Kanao Tsuyuri

Inosuke has fairly minimal interaction with the detached Kanao during their training. Sometimes his actions would make him look like a nutcase, for example - hanging from the ceiling or dislocating all the joints in his arm and moving them around. However, the two later form a bond forged through battle while teaming up against Doma, who was responsible for the deaths of both their loved ones. The pair make an effective team in battle and, with the help of Shinobu's poison, together they manage to kill one of the most powerful demons in the series, though neither of them is even a Hashira. Afterwards, although they don't exchange any dialogue, they share a moment to mourn the families they both lost because of Doma. When they return to fight Muzan, they exchange brief pleasantries and seem to work well together.

Kotoha Hashibira

Kotoha is Inosuke's mother. Kotoha loved Inosuke deeply when he was a baby. She promised to protect him and raise him happily, but this never happened when she discovered that Doma was eating her worshippers, which led her to try to run away with baby Inosuke. She was trapped by a cliff when she made the hasty decision to throw Inosuke into the river in order to save him from Doma, and she was killed and eaten. When Inosuke discovered that Doma had killed his mother, he became furious.

Aoi Kanzaki

They met, for the first time, at the Butterfly Estate. At first, he has a hard time beating Aoi in all tasks due to his lack of willpower. Later, he is finally able to adapt and beat her. Compared to Zenitsu and Tanjiro, he was harder on her. He was one of the killers who volunteered instead of Aoi to go to the pleasure district in a mission with Tengen. After the fight against the Sixth Moon, he was transported once again to the Butterfly Domain. Aoi was visibly saddened by Inosuke's terrible condition, as he had poison in his body and she thought it was too late to stop the bleeding. Her tears were quickly dispelled though, as he falls from the ceiling. She starts to see it as a pain and starts arguing with Inosuke again. At the Butterfly Estate, he leaves Tanjiro's room and heads to the kitchen to look for food. He tries to steal some food from Aoi's back, but she notices him. She gives him a round tray of food which is made only for Inosuke and tells him that he can eat how much and when he wants from this tray. After this gesture, Inosuke visibly starts to see her in a good light. Finally, she and Inosuke Hashibira get married and have a great grandson named Aoba Hashibira.

Kyojuro Rengoku

Like Tanjiro and Zenitsu, Inosuke is immediately charmed by the strong and magnanimous Kyojuro, considering him a mentor and leader after their meeting on the infinity train. After Kyojuro's death following his fight with Akaza, Tanjiro and Zenitsu despair, while Inosuke is the one who picks them up, correctly expressing that Kyojuro would want them to continue fighting and live good lives to honor his memory and sacrifice.

Gyomei Himejima

During the Pillar training, Inosuke enjoys the final phase of the endurance tests under Gyomei, pushing himself to the point of falling unconscious while standing under an icy waterfall. Inosuke immediately admires Himejima for his incredible strength, identifying him as the strongest Pillar.

Doma

Inosuke only interacts with Doma for the duration of their fight, but quickly develops a deeply personal hatred and desire for revenge against him. This begins when he discovers that Doma has absorbed Shinobu and takes on a whole new dimension when he discovers that Doma orphaned him and devoured his mother when Inosuke was a baby. For his part, Doma is intrigued by Inosuke's attitude and fighting style, and completely underestimates him as an opponent, proving to be his undoing after Inosuke and Kanao manage to kill him in battle.

Anecdotes

  • Inosuke's last name contains the kanji for "beak, beak" and "wide, flat," and his first name contains the Man'yōgana for the letter "I," and the Man'yōgana of "no" and the regular kanji for "assistance, help."
    • The "ino" in his first name resembles the first part of the Japanese word for "boar". This is further proven with the kanji for his name as a courtier Inoko.
  • Inosuke's ranking in popularity polls is as follows:
    • Inosuke ranked 5th in the first popularity poll with 1,977 votes.
    • Inosuke ranked 6th in the second popularity poll with 8,750 votes.
  • Inosuke does not care to remember the names of others and usually succeeds in all seven attempts
    • Later in the series, however, Inosuke finally managed to pronounce the names of his closest friends correctly; through the Infinite Dimensional Fortress Arc, he was able to call Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Kanao, and Shinobu by their correct names consistently and without fail.
  • Inosuke's two voice actors, Yoshisugu Matsuoka and Bryce Papenbrook, also share the role of Kirito from Sword Art Online.
  • Inosuke seems to enjoy eating tempura, as seen when he is resting at Wisteria Manor and when he uses it as motivation during training.
  • His swords are different from other demon slayers in that he purposely chops them himself to give them jagged edges.
  • Inosuke used boars, bears and wolves as references when creating the Breath of the Beast.
  • He is hated by the uniform makers and blacksmiths (Hotaru Haganezuka) of the Demon Slayers army because he always tears the upper part of his uniform and breaks the swords that the blacksmiths gave him with a stone, right in front of their eyes too.
  • Inosuke is a member of the group "Stylish Scruffy Democracy" with Tanjiro (Voice), Zenitsu (Shamizen and songwriter) and Tengen (Harmonica). Inosuke is the Taiko drummer of the group. "Exploding skin and the melancholy of modernodor" is their first song which made everyone who heard it dizzy and vomit non-stop.
    • Inosuke is deaf, just like Tanjiro.
  • In Inosuke's dream in the Infinity Train Arc, Rabbit-Nezuko's name was Pyonko. She is a girl, so Inosuke took a little more notice of her than Ponjiro and Chuitsu, the names of Tanjiro and Zenitsu respectively.
  • Inosuke had a strong platonic relationship with Nezuko. Since the latter was always kind to him and never yelled at him for being unconventional and she never laughed at him whenever he explained his reasoning for doing the things he did. For this reason, Inosuke respected and treated Nezuko as a mother figure and reported to her what was happening to him.
    • Whenever Nezuko visited Kanao and Aoi once a month, Inosuke was with her. Zenitsu hated Inosuke for that.
  • Although Aoi didn't smile much, Inosuke was able to make her laugh often by doing unexpected things.
  • Inosuke's raven stays hidden most of the time. This is because he almost ate his crow on 18 different occasions.
