Personality
Josuke is a well-behaved boy with a good heart. Always with his heart on his sleeve, he will do his best to protect his beloved hometown and keep it running smoothly, while filling in for his maternal grandfather who was murdered by Angelo.
His stand, Crazy Diamond, reflects his kindness through powers of healing and repair.
He has a phobia of reptiles and enjoys touching them even less. He can't stand it when people treat his haircut as his "pride". This puts him in a state of anger that plunges him into violence.
According to Koichi, this reaction is due to the fact that Josuke wears this haircut as a token of gratitude to a high school student, wearing a similar haircut, who saved his life when he was sick. And to make fun of his cup, would be to disrespect his savior.
Apparence
Josuke is a handsome young man of average build. He wears a small dowel in each ear. The most important feature for him is his well maintained pompadour, the haircut of an unknown man who saved his life as a child, which he wears as a tribute to him. Josuke then says that this unknown man would be an example to follow. His pompadour tends to get prickly with his mood, like when he is irritated or angry.
Josuke wears a modified black Japanese school uniform. His jacket conforms to his body, extending to the middle of his thigh, and he wears wide-legged pants. He keeps his jacket unbuttoned and pinned at the sides (so that it forms a heart), revealing a jersey with a small zipper on each side of his chest.
Josuke wears a number of gold metallic emblems. On the left side of his collar he wears a modified anchor, and on his right a row of two small hearts. Pinned to his open jacket on his chest on his right is a sign of peace (☮), and on the left is a heart (sometimes encloses a palm tree, as on Jotaro's cap in part 4). He wears a gold ring on both wrists, above his sleeves (under more elaborate pieces in several illustrations). Some times, (especially in the manga and only in one sequence of the ending of the anime) he wears the metallic golden letter "J" pinned on his jacket or a plate grafted on his shirt with engraved: "1999" and this, only in the manga.
For shoes, Josuke wears a pair of Mr. Junko.
The most common color scheme of Josuke consists of a uniform (purple, like the one Jotaro wears in part 3) and a green jersey (yellow in the anime).
Skills
Stand
Josuke's stand, Crazy Diamond, can restore objects (and organisms) to a previous state in their history.
He is able to repair damage and heal wounds. He can also convert an item back into its component parts (for example, a wooden table into wood).
With this, Crazy Diamond can perform a range of interesting feats; including trapping (parts of) an enemy by restoring pieces of a broken object around it; and tracking, for example restoring a torn garment, which seeks to reattach itself.
However, this stand is not without limits: Crazy Diamond can only restore condition, not life, so a lifeless body would still remain dead even after being "repaired" by Crazy Diamond's power. Furthermore, the healing power cannot be used on Josuke himself, or strictly speaking, on anything that can be considered part of his current self, his body or even his own clothes.
Josuke shows great mastery in the use of Crazy Diamond in combat. Due to his great physical prowess, Josuke can use Crazy Diamond's fists to execute out-of-the-box tactics such as breaking through a wall to escape an attack. In addition, he has been shown to throw projectiles with great effectiveness due to the strength and precision of his Stand.
In addition, Josuke has been shown to use his seemingly limited power for a wide range of tactical purposes. Crazy Diamond's power to fix anything makes Josuke a great healer as long as he can reach his allies before they die and works exceptionally well with a partner as a result. Because he can break things and fix them, Josuke is liberal in breaking anything to get something he wants such as a more favorable position or a key item like fuel for a motorcycle, using a valuable object as leverage, or even destroying his motorcycle to avoid a baby carriage; he then fixes whatever he broke, negating any consequences his antics would have. Josuke can easily exploit the environment to his advantage with Crazy Diamond. His ability to repair allows him to manipulate the environment to a certain extent, creating a concrete shield and laying a trap with the broken pieces of an object only to repair it around an enemy. The lethality of his projectile is also increased as he can create a boomerang effect by forcing a piece back towards him, hitting an enemy from behind.
Intelligence
Josuke is skillful, confident and courageous, possessing considerable fluid intelligence and a will to win; like his father.
Intelligence: Josuke is extremely quick to rise to the occasion in almost any circumstance, as he is very aware of the immediate environment as well as his own abilities. He is proficient in using everything at hand to deal with current problems, and is also shown to be able to plan several steps ahead by reading the behavior and habits of the opponent. Josuke is very confident in his abilities to the point of claiming that there is nothing that Crazy Diamond (indirectly referring to himself) cannot solve, and expresses slight disappointment after understanding what he thought was one of those problems. Because of his intellect, Josuke can be quite cunning; manipulating, lying, and occasionally deceiving others to achieve certain selfish goals.
Physical skills
Josuke has substantial athletic ability. He was once shown to successfully chase a moving bus for long distances on foot and could handle a heavy motorcycle effortlessly for the first and only time driving it, while performing many otherwise professional feats during a high-speed chase to avoid direct contact with the pursuing enemy. The most famous demonstration of Josuke's physical toughness is shown when he withstands exposure to several explosions generated by Yoshikage Kira's Killer Queen, suffering heavy wounds and blood loss but remaining conscious enough to think of countermeasures and tactics.
History
Past
Josuke is 4 years old, and like Holy Kujo, he had a severe fever. His mother braved a snowstorm to take him to the hospital, but because of the snowstorm, they were stuck and could not move forward. A young high school student with a Pompadour cup steps in to help them and manages to get them out of the snow, allowing Josuke to be taken to the hospital in time.
When Jotaro defeats DIO, the disease stops. Josuke, inspired by the high school student who saved him and his mother, decided to dress and wear his hair like him as a token of gratitude. A little later, he will develop his Crazy Diamond Stand.
Jotaro Kujo meets Josuke Higashikata!
In 1999, Jotaro went to Morio to look for a man named Josuke Higashikata, who would be the illegitimate son of his grandfather: Joseph Joestar. He was then 16 years old and in second grade. Jotaro meets Koichi Hirose who is also entering the second year of high school that day. They are interrupted in their discussion by some first-year students who attack a teenager. They look at them and the gang of thugs take the teenager's papers and read aloud its content, which mentions the name Josuke Higashikata, which makes Jotaro react and he suddenly turns around. The thugs make fun of Josuke's haircut, which pushes him to the limit and makes him take out his Stand to make them leave. Jotaro is then surprised to see that Josuke has a Stand. He walks towards him and explains him why he came, a fight between Josuke and Jotaro follows because of a misunderstanding, thinking that Jotaro made fun of his hair.
Jotaro gauges the power of Crazy Diamond, who has enough speed and power to match his own, Star Platinum. He tells Josuke the second reason he came to Morio: an evil killer named Angelo is on the loose and he has a Stand, to boot. Jotaro warns Josuke and Koichi Hirose, who is nearby, to be vigilant. He then goes to Budogaoka where he joins the class of Second B with Koichi.
Josuke Higashikata meets Angelo!
On his way back, Josuke is robbed in a supermarket and saves a woman who is being held hostage. It turns out that the robber was under the influence of Angelo and his Aqua Necklace Stand. Angry at Josuke's intervention, Angelo vows to find Josuke's house and kill his family. The next day, Josuke manages to capture him for the first time, but Angelo cleverly changes his Stand to imitate a bottle of brandy and tricks Josuke's grandfather, Ryohei Higashikata, into taking a drink. Ryohei dies and even Crazy Diamond's abilities cannot revive him. Josuke decides to protect Morio instead of his grandfather. He and Jotaro set up camp in the Higashikata house, drinking and eating only bottled water and canned goods for three days. When it starts to rain, Angelo mixes his Stand with the raindrops and starts boiling the water inside the house. Soon, water vapor spreads everywhere and the threat of Aqua Necklace is imminent. However, Josuke deliberately allows Aqua Necklace to enter his body, after swallowing shredded pieces of a rubber glove that he later restores to trap the enemy Stand. As they approach Anjuro, Josuke and Jotaro learn of a mysterious Stand user who used an Arrow to awaken his Stand, and then Josuke merges Angelo's body with a rock, creating a local landmark.
The Nijimura brothers
One day, Josuke and Koichi notice a suspicious house on their way to school, apparently ruined and abandoned. The house turns out to be the residence of the brothers Okuyasu and Keicho Nijimura, two stand-up men. A fight ensues when Keicho shoots Koichi with an arrow and although Josuke quickly defeats Okuyasu, Keicho is a tougher opponent. Nevertheless, Josuke manages to use Keicho's Bad Company against him and wins. Josuke and Koichi then discover the Nijimura's Father in the attic, who has become a mute monster, and Keicho reveals that he is trying to kill him to end his suffering. Josuke manages to prove that the father still has his humanity in him and that there may be a cure for his condition. However, the three are suddenly attacked by Red Hot Chili Pepper and Keicho is killed while taking a hit for Okuyasu. Red Hot Chili Pepper then escapes with Stand's bow and arrow.
Echoes
When Okuyasu and Koichi fall victim to Tamami's Stand, he saves them by revealing that the cat Koichi ran over was a toy and heals Tamami's tooth. He is surprised when he sees Tamami handing her bag to Koichi.
Surface
Hearing what Tamami Kobayashi knew, Josuke and Koichi investigate a senior in their high school, Toshikazu Hazamada. Hazamada's Surface Stand takes on Josuke's appearance in order to assassinate Jotaro. With Koichi's help, they manage to find Jotaro before Hazamada and the fake Josuke. While Surface briefly succeeds in taking control of Josuke's body, Hazamada is attacked by two thugs he angered earlier and soon knocked out by Josuke's fists. Josuke also destroys the wooden body, the representative, that Surface was using.
Yukako Yamagishi is in love
After Yukako Yamagishi's intense declaration of love, Koichi confides his problems to his friends Josuke and Okyuyasu. They advise him to convince Yukako that he is not worth her interest. Josuke then tries to spread the rumor that Koichi is a thief and a cheat. Unfortunately, this has the opposite effect of what was intended and Koichi is kidnapped by Yukako who takes him to a mansion on the other side of Morio, in order to straighten him out. When Koichi is nowhere to be found the next morning, Josuke thinks that something is wrong. He and Okuyasu follow Koichi's desperate phone call and arrive just in time to see him defeat Yukako with his new and improved Stand.
Let's go eat Italian
One afternoon, Okuyasu and Josuke discover a new restaurant and, at Okuyasu's insistence, the two men enter. The chef and waiter Tonio Trussardi welcomes them and promises them a very special Italian dish to cure Okuyasu's lack of sleep and other ailments. Josuke's suspicions grow when Okuyasu's dish causes various strange phenomena in his body and he rushes into the kitchen to confront Tonio. However, Tonio turns out to be harmless and only gets angry with Josuke for entering his kitchen without washing his hands. After the misunderstanding is cleared up, Josuke and Okuyasu introduce themselves to Tonio as Stand's companions. However, Josuke is forced to clean Tonio's kitchen from top to bottom since he entered it without respecting the rules of hygiene.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
One night, the Red Hot Chili Pepper Stand appears in Josuke's television set and looks for a fight. Although Crazy Diamond is apparently stronger and faster, Red Hot Chili Pepper manages to overpower him briefly and runs away. The next day, Josuke, Koichi and Okuyasu learn from Jotaro that Joseph, Josuke's father, is coming to Morio to flush out the enemy Stand wielder, but Red Hot Chili Pepper eavesdrops on them and escapes.
At the port, while Jotaro and Okuyasu go to join Joseph on his boat to protect him, Josuke runs into Akira Otoishi, the Red Hot Chili Pepper user. Although the enemy Stand is the most powerful, Josuke manages to trap him in a tire and then dissolve his electricity in the ocean, thus neutralizing him.
Afterwards, although Akira manages to get close to Joseph, he is defeated by Okuyasu and Josuke meets his father for the first time.
We picked up something weird!
We picked up something weird!
The relationship between Josuke and Joseph is tense. Indeed, at the beginning Josuke wants Joseph to leave Morio as soon as possible. They are distracted when they meet an invisible baby and have to take care of it. When the baby falls into a pond, Joseph slits his wrist and the blood allows Josuke to spot the invisible baby before it drowns, forcing Josuke's respect. Josuke is upset when he discovers how much money Joseph has spent on baby supplies.
Visit to a mangaka
One day, Josuke and Okuyasu see Koichi entering the house of a famous mangaka named Rohan Kishibe. Suspicious because Koichi is injured, the two enter the house but Rohan's Heaven's Door allows him to turn anyone who sees his work into a book in order to change their memories as he pleases. However, Rohan makes the mistake of making fun of Josuke's hairstyle, which makes him mad with rage and makes him immune to Heaven's Door, and Josuke beats Rohan who is hospitalized from his injuries.
The hunt is on!
Jotaro engages Josuke in a rat hunt, because Akira Otoishi used the Arrow on a rat, which survived. In their rat hunt, Jotaro and Josuke hunt not one, but two rats, which can melt anyone with darts. One rat is killed quickly, but the second almost kills Jotaro before Josuke can shoot it.
The harvest of Shigechi
One day, Josuke notices that his bank account is almost empty because he spent his money frivolously. Desperate for money, he and Okuyasu meet Shigekiyo Yangu, a middle-schooler and wielder of the swarm-like Stand, Harvest, which can fetch any object its wielder desires. Although Josuke and Okuyasu devise schemes to get rich from Harvest, Shigechi's greed makes them fight for 5,000,000 yen. Shigechi is finally distracted by Josuke destroying the prize and foolishly sends Harvest away, leaving him defenseless to be beaten. The three boys finally make up.
Yoshikage Kira wants peace and quiet
One day, Josuke sees one of Shigechi's disintegrating Harvest, which gives him a jacket button from his handler. The ghost Reimi Sugimoto confirms that the mysterious killer who has been preying on Morio's women is responsible for Shigechi's death, and all of Josuke's allies embark on a hunt for the killer. Josuke is finally called by Koichi, who has found the killer's stand, and Josuke arrives in time to catch the murderer, Yoshikage Kira. However, Kira manages to escape and change his face by using the booth of local beautician Aya Tsuji.
I am an alien
One day, Josuke and Okuyasu meet the self-proclaimed alien Nu Mikitakazo Nshi and, although skeptical at first, Josuke is convinced that Nu is an alien because he cannot see the Stands despite his shapeshifting powers. Since his mother froze his bank account, Josuke needs money again and devises another plan with Nu's cooperation. Josuke sets up a game of cee-lo with Rohan in which he has replaced one of the dice with Mikitaka, but the fact that Mikitaka doesn't know the rules of the game means that Rohan almost gets Josuke. The game ends with Rohan's house burning down while Josuke escapes and the grudge between the two men grows.
The next day, Josuke sees Mikitaka with his mother, but while Mikitaka insists that he hypnotized her, the mother also mentions that Mikitaka believes he is an alien, which confuses Josuke.
Highway Star
One day, Josuke meets Rohan on the bus. The latter still has a grudge against him, but when the Highway Star Stand traps Rohan in a tunnel and almost traps Josuke, Rohan frees Josuke at his own expense and Josuke must now find the Highway Star handler while being chased by him. Calling Koichi for help, Josuke manages to ride Rohan's motorcycle from the tunnel to the hospital where Yuya Fungami is hospitalized. Josuke beats him up and frees Rohan.
Pylon all comfort
One day, Josuke, Okuyasu and Mikitaka discover a disconnected tower in which Toyohiro Kanedaichi lives, a man who lives in autarky inside the tower. Josuke is trapped inside the tower, which turns out to be the Stand Super Fly, but Josuke cooperates with Mikitaka to fight Toyohiro, who eventually apologizes and reveals to them that Koichi was attacked by another Stand wielder.
Enigma
Josuke asks for Yuya's help to investigate Koichi's disappearance. They both come across Terunosuke Miyamoto, the user of Enigma, a Stand that imprisons people in paper. While Josuke is trapped, Yuya manages to save him and Koichi, and Terunosuke is fused to paper and becomes a book. Josuke then undertakes to imprison him in a library.
Final fight against Kira
Rohan manages to discover a lead on their enemy, as young Hayato Kawajiri suspiciously spies on his father Kosaku. The group organizes a meeting to interrogate Hayato, but Hayato, who has discovered that his father Kosaku is the murderer, calls Josuke in advance and forces Kira to reveal his name while Josuke listens.
A fight ensues between Kira, Josuke and Okuyasu, but Okuyasu is mortally wounded by the combination of Killer Queen and Stray Cat's powers. While Josuke heals Okuyasu, the latter remains unconscious while Josuke retreats inside a house. Kira attacks him from outside with explosive bubbles, but Josuke manages to discover that Yoshihiro Kira, father of his enemy, was helping his son and makes Kira inadvertently kill his father. Kira is then wounded by a projectile and a close fight begins between Crazy Diamond and Killer Queen. Crazy Diamond is almost defeated, but Okuyasu manages to pull Stray Cat away from Killer Queen, allowing Josuke to bypass her defense and send Kira into the main street, where Jotaro, Koichi and Rohan are waiting.
Kira is surrounded and wounded but remains determined. When a doctor approaches him, Kira almost activates his time loop, but Koichi and Jotaro manage to shoot him, and Kira is accidentally run over by an ambulance.
Farewell Morio - Youth with a heart of gold
Now that Morio is safe from the evil Stand handlers, Jotaro and Joseph leave town and Josuke accompanies them with a final bow. Josuke, however, manages to steal Joseph's wallet, as well as the money in it.
In the anime, he is seen for the last time talking with Okuyasu and Koichi about a rumor that the former has heard and decided to investigate.
The Book: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure 4th Another Day
Josuke helps Morio's Stand Handlers to find Hanae Orikasa's killer. During the investigation, Josuke's mother is injured, which leads Josuke to confront Takuma Hasumi, the killer. Takuma discovers that Josuke was saved by a student with a pompadour in his past and tries to use it against him, but this only makes Josuke more angry. Even with severe injuries caused by The Book, Josuke manages to defeat Takuma, who eventually falls from the library roof against Josuke's wishes.
Rohan at the Louvre
Josuke makes a brief appearance in this one-shot. He heard Rohan's story about Nanase Kishibe with Koichi and Okuyasu before the mangaka decided to investigate Nizaemon Yamamura's painting, Under the Moon.
Ainsi parlait Kishibe Rohan
Josuke makes an appearance towards the end when Rohan talks to Koichi and Okuyasu. However, only the back of his head and his torso are visible in the shot.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Over Heaven
Josuke is mentioned in the author's note, in which the translator states that the Speedwagon Foundation asked Josuke to restore the DIO diary in order to find a way to wake Jotaro from his coma during the events at Stone Ocean.
