Kame Sennin, also known as Muten Roshi is an expert in martial arts and the inventor of Kame Hamé Ha. He was one of the main protagonists of the Dragon Ball saga.

Characteristic and personality
Kame Sennin is the second master of Son Goku after his grandfather Son Goku. He is a great expert in martial arts and one of the best fighters of the history thanks to the turtle style that he invented himself. He was trained by master Mutaito and master Karin, and won the Tenka-Ichi-Budokai several times during his youth.
Thus he was considered the strongest man on the planet before the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai. Muten Rôshi trained Son Gokû, Kuririn and Yamcha and taught them Kame Hamé Ha. He has always been by Son Goku's side as a mentor because he is always of good advice, and his fighting experience and his wisdom are always very useful. However, he has a very big flaw: he is a sex maniac and he is ready to do anything to achieve his fantasies. Muten Rôshi participated twice in Tenka-Ichi-Budokai under the false identity of Jackie Chun, and won the 21st edition.
Kame Sennin is an iconic character in the Dragon Ball universe, and for decades he has been considered the strongest human being in the world.
In spite of his relative perversity, he shows great wisdom and on several occasions. When Piccolo Daimao appears in the story, Kame Sennin doesn't hesitate to put his life at stake to try to stop the sworn enemy of his late master Mutaito, by killing the terrible Mafuba.
This is the last major action of the old master in the original plot.
But we must nevertheless remember his magnificent conclusion during the 23rd Tenkai Ichi Budokai, the words of Kamé Sennin full of wisdom touch God himself in addition to summarizing magnificently the adventures of Son Gokû and this thanks to the Dragon Balls.
Unfortunately, with the next parts, the character will become less important in the intrigues and this in spite of the ultimate revelation on the origins of Son Gokû where Kamé Sennin confessed that his former disciple Son Gohan had found a young boy at the beginning very aggressive but who became later a nice boy following a shock received accidentally
The scriptwriters of the anime adaptation nevertheless continued to ridicule the character through his sexual obsessions to such an extent that the character became almost a caricature.
However in the Dragon Ball Super manga, as well as in the fifteenth movie, Freezer's resurrection, Akira Toriyama seems to want to put this character back in the forefront and this despite his basic potential supposed to be crushed since by many of Son Goku's friends.
His interventions are debatable since logically, Kame Sennin is not supposed to have the potential to defeat a Freezer man and unfortunately there is no indication that Kame Sennin has progressed in the mean time.
Later on, Akira Toriyama and Toyotaro gave him a big role in the Survival of the Universe arc, as Kame Sennin is able to perform very stealthy moves which turned out to be one of the foundations of the turtle school and made the turtle school come full circle.
Although this final lesson of Kame Sennin is a good moment of bravery for the character, its development raises many surprises.
Finally, the old master is above all embodied by the masterful Kôhei Miyauchi, this veteran of dubbing to breathe all the nuances to this cult character. He unfortunately left us on June 2, 1995.
Biography
Dragon Ball
Before the beginning of Dragon Ball
He is one of the greatest masters of martial arts, he was born in 430 and lives on a tiny desert island, in a house called Kame House ("Turtle House").
In his youth, Kame Sennin was a student of the great master Mutaito, along with Tsuru Sennin, and witnessed the latter's imprisonment of the demon Piccolo. After the death of his master, Kame Sennin and Tsuru Sennin separated and developed their own fighting styles, thus founding their own schools, thus aggravating their already existing rivalries. Kame Sennin had many adventures and developed many techniques before becoming a great master, the most famous of which is Kame Hamé Ha. He climbed the Karin Tower and was one of the few people to successfully complete Master Karin's training in three years. He also achieved the feat of acquiring immortality by drinking a sacred water that was supposed to come from God himself: Kame Sennin would continue to age and could still be killed, but he could no longer die of old age from that day on, allowing him to live through the centuries.
Kame Sennin eventually became a great martial arts master, settled on his island, and took under his tutelage two promising students: Son Gohan (grandfather) and Gyumao. Once these last two are trained, he will live alone and without apprentices for many years until he proposes to Son Goku to become his student.
Saga of the 7 Dragon Balls
He meets him and Bulma at the very beginning of the story, when they save his sea turtle which was lost on the continent. He gives the gift of the Kinto-un (magic cloud) to Goku in thanks.
This old man is obsessed by pretty girls, and spends most of his time watching fitness shows on TV or reading erotic magazines (so he makes a fool of himself trying to show how the Kinto-un works and falls through because it is necessary to have a pure heart to ride it). Later, Son Gokû returns on his island to ask him to train him. The young boy is then joined by Kuririn, and Kame Sennin starts to train them both for the next Tenkaichi Budokai.
Saga of the 21st Tenka Ichi Budōkai
Kame Sennin's method is essentially based on simple and repeated exercises, performed with heavy turtle shells on the back, in order to increase considerably the physical condition of his students. So, at the end of their training, one year later, Son Gokû and Kuririn realize, by removing the shells they kept night and day on their backs, how much their strength and their speed have been increased thanks to this training.
During the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, in which Son Goku and Kuririn participate, as well as Yamcha, Kame Sennin decides to register under a false identity in order to prevent his disciples from winning their very first tournament, which would make them too sure of themselves considering their very young age. So he takes the appearance of Jackie Chun. Jackie Chun easily qualified for the final round of the tournament. He is opposed to Yamcha in the quarter-finals, and the latter, in spite of his great technical faculties, is easily defeated by the experience of Jackie Chun. Yamcha was then convinced that his opponent was none other than Kame Sennin, but thanks to a trick of the latter he ended up thinking that he was wrong. Jackie Chun had to face Kuririn in the semi-finals.
Despite his advanced age, he is still a formidable fighter. Kuririn is very brave but he can't do anything against the speed and the strength of his opponent, and is beaten.
Son Gokû, who qualified for the final of the tournament, meets Jackie Chun. The fight, fierce, is extremely tight and full of rebounds. Son Gokû shows himself as powerful as his master and the two opponents use their best fighting techniques. The fight being prolonged, the night falls, and the full moon appears, which has for consequence to transform Son Gokû into a giant monkey whereas he was about to lose the fight. Jackie Chun, in front of such a monster, is forced to throw a Kame Hamé Ha on the moon in order to make it explode and thus cancel the transformation of Son Gokû. Neither Son Gokû nor Jackie Chun admit to be defeated.
The two opponents use their last resources in the fight, and end up hitting each other with a blow that knocks them both out. The first one to get up and say "I'm the winner!" is declared the winner by the referee, and it is Jackie Chun who finally manages to get up and say the sentence, so he is declared the winner of the tournament.
Saga of the 22nd Tenka Ichi Budōkai
Three years later, during the next tournament, Kame Sennin enrolled again under the guise of Jackie Chun, with the idea once again to test his students against an imaginary fighter who would surpass them and push them to constantly improve in order to beat him. It will be nevertheless the last attempt of this kind of Kame Sennin, so much these students will show themselves brilliant, even downgrading him in the case of Son Goku. In the quarter-finals, he faced a werewolf who was angry at him for having destroyed the moon during the previous tournament, because since then he could not take back his human appearance.
But after the werewolf was disqualified for using a knife, Jackie Chun found a solution: he used Kuririn's skull (which is bald), to reproduce the same effects as the full moon, and that's how the werewolf regained its human appearance. In the semi-final, Jackie Chun is opposed to Ten Shin Han. This last one is endowed with an incredible strength, and Jackie Chun finally decides to give up the fight, considering that his role stops here and that Ten Shin Han will be a formidable opponent for Son Goku in the final.
The character of Jackie Chun makes here her last appearance in the manga, and it seems that the students of Kame Sennin will never know her real identity. Except Nam, Tsuru Sennin, Chiaotzu and Ten Shin Han, nobody will know anything about it.
Soon after, Kame Sennin has a discussion with Ten Shin Han who doesn't understand the attitude of his former opponent.
It turns out that the old master has retired from the competition because he knows that his disciples will not get a big head and will continue to train to become respectable martial artists. The wise words will echo to Ten Shin Han who will evolve on the path of goodness.
Saga of Piccolo Daimaō
After the return of the demon Piccolo, we discover the past of Kame Sennin (who is several hundred years old). As a student of Mutaito with Tsuru Sennin, he had helped his master to imprison the demon Piccolo in a pressure cooker, with the technique of Mafuba, when this one was spreading terror, several centuries before. When Piccolo reappeared, Kame Sennin tried to imprison him with Mafuba again, but he failed and died, drained of his life energy. After Piccolo's death, all his recent victims and those of his demons are resurrected with the help of Dragon Balls. These include himself as well as Chaozu and Kuririn.
End of Dragon Ball
Thereafter, Kame Sennin gave up training new people. He separates himself just after the defeat of the demon Piccolo from his two students Kuririn and Yamcha. He incites them, with Ten Shin Han and Chaozu, to follow the same training that Son Gokû followed around the world these last three years. This will make them progress and not be too much ahead of Gokû who is now the student of the Almighty. Kame Sennin then disappears from the history of Dragon Ball, to become a very secondary character, staying essentially on his island, totally overwhelmed by the power of Son Goku and his friends. These last three students, nevertheless, will do him the honor to continue to wear his colors in battle, even after having been relieved of their status of disciples.
Dragon Ball Z
Saga of the Saiyans
ome years later, Kame Sennin finds himself in his house with Bulma and Kuririn to witness the presence of Son Goku's son, Son Gohan. But happiness turns into nightmare, the group is confronted with Raditz, Son Goku's brother. After that, Kame Sennin tells to a confused Goku, his story that grandfather Gohan told him. When he was a baby, he hit his head against a rock while falling and so Gokû lost his violent nature and became a kind boy.
His Gohan kidnapped by Raditz, Goku with Piccolo go to search for Gohan. Later, Kame Sennin, Kuririn and Bulma go to the battlefield and find Goku dying.
Shortly before the arrival of the Saiyans, Kame Sennin asks his sister if it is possible to read the future, it turns out that Uranai Baba is unable to do so this time.
When Nappa and Vegeta arrived on earth, Kame Sennin stayed at Kame House with Bulma, Pu-erh and Oolong. Several times, Kame Sennin curses his powerlessness, especially when they find the bodies of the heroes who died during the battle with his master Karin.
However, solutions begin to appear and Kame Sennin helps Bulma in this task.
Saga Namek and Saga Freezer
Kame Sennin calls Bulma via a phone call after they land on Namek, but learns that Vegeta and an even stronger being named Freezer are also on the planet looking for the Dragon Balls. Then, Kame Sennin goes to visit Son Goku in the hospital and informs him of the danger the trio will face on Namek. At the Capsule Corporation, Kame Sennin and the others are forced to go to Namek because of Chichi but it fails because of a breakdown on the spaceship.
Saga of the artificial humans
Three years later, Kame Sennin is at home with Oolong and Chaozu as they wait for news about the battle with the cyborgs. Later, Goku is brought to his island to hide from the cyborgs, who were looking for the fallen Super Saiyan.
Saga Cell
In the sequel, Kame Sennin learns about the appearance of a humanoid monster named Cell from the future. Kame Sennin appeared later in the Capsule Corporation because his house was flooded because of Cell's ultimate transformation.
He watches the Cell Game on TV and doesn't understand Son Goku's attitude towards Cell, the latter being undeniably more powerful.
Majin Boo Saga
He still lives in Kame House but with Kuririn and N°18 who have a daughter Maron. The old master intends to attend the next Tenkai Ichi Budokai knowing now that Son Gokû will be present and this for one day.
Kame Sennin attends this new generation of warriors (Son Goten and Trunks). In the anime, he is the only one to understand the identity of the intriguing Mighty Mask. Following the dramatic events caused by Vegeta possessed by the wizard Babidi, he goes to find the Dragon Balls to resurrect the victims.
After the resurrection of the terrible Majin Boo, Kame Sennin and the others live in the God's Palace. Unfortunately, soon after the assimilation of Majin Boo (good), the new Majin locates very easily the palace and discovers there the remaining friends of Son Gokû.
The old master praises Piccolo who is an outstanding tactician. Unfortunately, Kame Sennin was killed a little later by Majin Boo. He resurrects with the others thanks to the Dragon Balls of the planet Namek to give shortly after his energy for the ultimate Genki Dama.
Saga of the 28th Tenka Ichi Budōkai
During this edition of the tournament, Kame Sennin is also present with the rest of Son Goku's friends. We can see that his glasses have changed
Then he changes his place for a less looking place with his companions.
Dragon Ball Super
Battles of Gods Saga
He is present for Bulma's birthday, the interactions of Kame Sennin although present are few, and watches in the distance the arrival of Beerus and Whis.
Saga of Trunks of the Future
In order to be able to neutralize Zamasu who turns out to be immortal, his body is indeed able to reconstitute itself shortly after a mortal wound. While Son Goku is forced to flee the battlefield with his friends, he plans to learn the Mafuba, to imprison Zamasu in this way.
While Piccolo offered to show him this technique, Son Gokû prefers to learn it from his master.
He then uses Umi Gabe as his training partner to perform Mafuba. The old master gives him a talisman shortly after his training to lock up his victim.
In the manga, Son Goku performs this technique but unfortunately Kamé Sennin made a mistake, indeed Gokû took a coupon instead of the talisman, Zamasu manages to escape.
While in the anime, it is Trunks who uses the Mafuba to lock Zamasu up, but again the talisman was forgotten in Kame House to finalize the imprisonment.
Saga of the Survival of the Universe
Animated
Kame Sennin is selected by Son Goku as a fighter of the universe 7. Although many thought the old master was outdated, he will reveal all his potential and secret training when he is hypnotized by Yurin.
Amazed by such progress, Goku recruited his old master.
To prepare himself, Kame Sennin will try to overcome his biggest weakness, his perverse tendency. He will ask Pu-erh to change into a woman and fight against his baser instincts.
During the tournament, he will illustrate himself thanks to his numerous techniques such as the Bankoku Bikkuri Sho or the Mafuba rather than by brute force.
If at the beginning he will team up with Ten Shin Han, Son Gohan and Piccolo, he will be separated from the group following Kale's rage.
He will come across several powerful fighters such as Caway who will try to seduce him but will get scared when seeing the old man in his 100% form, will lock Dercori with a Mafuba and will eliminate Ganos with a full power Kame Hame.
This attack will make the master faint, scaring his two former students. He will get up again despite everything. Tired from such fights and close to death, he will be attacked by Frost, looking for an easy target.
Pulling out his last spring, the Mafuba, Frost will escape before turning against Vegeta the second try of Kame Sennin. Before falling, he will free Vegeta with a Kikoha by breaking the bottle. He will jump in the void to take a Senzu in the stands and rest. The old master has largely proved his progress.
Manga
In the manga, Kame Sennin is "sold" by Freezer, indeed the latter asks Frost his new sidekick to take care of the three bald men of his team. Kuririn is immediately ejected from the ring by the terrible Frost. Ten Shin Han and Kamé Sennin face this terrible opponent, Ten Shin Han uses Kikohô but in vain.Ten Shin Han is in turn eliminated and only Kame Sennin keeps on standing in front of Frost, that's when Son Goku appears to help him. The old master retorts that he is not as weak as that.
Afterwards, Kame Sennin manages not to be eliminated unlike Piccolo and N°18 who are victims of two tiny fighters. N°17 suspected that Kame Sennin was not as weak as he wanted to show.
By being able to read Kahseral's movements, Kame Sennin is able to defeat him and eliminate him from the tournament. During this time, Goku is put in difficulty by the redoubtable Jiren.
The old master makes an appearance during his match and gives Goku his ultimate lesson. Indeed the brute force should not be the only element of answer to give in a fight of this magnitude, the important is to tame his mind,
The movements that Kame Sennin performs in front of Jiren are unpredictable, the movements are close to the ultra instincts according to Whis. Despite this bravery, Jiren puts Kame Sennin out of the field, but his elimination leads to new perspectives for Son Goku who has just understood the last teaching of his master.

Power
Muten Rôshi was for a long time considered as the strongest human being in the world. His fame has long pursued the character. His rival Tsuru Sennin does not seem to have been treated the same way.
Finally, let's note that Muten Rôshi is training in secret during the 22nd Tenkai Ichi Budôkai which means that the potential revealed in the guide book Dragon Ball - The Big Book : tome 7 : The great Dragon Ball encyclopedia is his last level.
However with the many elements that have been proven in the Dragon Ball Super manga, the potential of Kame Sennin is debatable. Facing Freezer's warriors, Kame Sennin managed to decimate many soldiers despite his supposedly lower level.
Afterwards, during the survival tournament, the old master uses many tricks to stay in the race as long as possible. Note that he manages to perform movements that are close to ultra instinct. However, the moves performed do not seem to affect the basic potential of a protagonist.
