Kawaki

Kawaki

Kawaki is a young boy bought and raised by the leader of Kara, with the sole purpose of being the future receptacle of Isshiki Ôtsutsuki thus becoming the key to their project. After being brought to Konoha by Team 7, he was taken in by Naruto Uzumaki who raised him as his own son, during which he developed a brotherly bond with Boruto Uzumaki to solve the mystery of Kama.

History

In the anime, Kawaki chopped wood for a living to buy alcohol for his alcoholic and violent father, Kokatsu. One day, a goldfish merchant invited him to a goldfish exhibition he was holding the next day, after Kawaki showed interest in goldfish. Later, his father saw the invitation in his pocket and punished Kawaki for interacting with strangers by forbidding him to have dinner. The next day, Kawaki was beaten by two boys until the goldfish merchant rescued him and offered him a job helping him sell goldfish in other villages. Kawaki hurried home after noticing the crack in his father's liquor bottle. Having given him only a broken bottle, Kawaki was locked in a room by Kokatsu.

Soon after, Jigen arrived and offered to buy him with a large sum of money. Not wanting to leave his home, Kawaki promised his father that he could work harder to earn money, but he was knocked out when Kokatsu hit him on the head with an empty bottle. Taking custody of the boy, Jigen told Kawaki that the suffering he had endured was over and that he had nothing to fear because he was his new father. As Kawaki and Jigen took the only tunnel out of the village, the seemingly friendly merchant turned out to be a child trafficker, who hoped to take Kawaki for himself. After Kawaki waited outside the tunnel for the two men to decide who would take the boy, Jigen came out, claiming that the man gladly withdrew.

When he was first brought to Kara, Jigen took Kawaki to Amado's laboratory, telling him that he would give him a gift when they became parent and child. As part of a ritual, Kawaki was one of fifteen candidates for the position of Ôtsutsuki receptacle who were placed in artificial wombs connected by tubes to jars of fluid, through which Jigen tried to transfer his Kâma to them. The first thirteen children all died, however, Jigen succeeded with Kawaki, one of his last attempts. Kawaki later woke up with a marked Kama on his left hand. Despite Jigen's promise of protection, Kawaki later described his life from that point on as a living hell.

Kawaki

Some time after the Ôtsutsuki ritual, Kawaki was attacked by Code, who was so jealous that only he had proved viable as an Isshiki receptacle that he came to openly hate him, making it clear that if he did not become a receptacle, he would kill Kawaki with his own hands. In the anime, Kawaki, terrified, tried to escape from Kara's lair but came across Garo, another survivor of Jigen's receptacle experiments. Garo was surprised that, unlike him, Kawaki did not seem to have suffered any major injuries. Garo tried to get him to come with him, saying that he could teach him many things, but Kawaki wanted to leave and asked where the exit was. Enraged, Garô began to strangle the boy, who, in self-defense, activated his Kâma and sent a blow to Garô's face, severely burning his head and destroying his chin, for which he claimed he apologized.

He was constantly subjected to exhausting training, all this so that he could master the Kama and become a perfect receptacle for Isshiki Ôtsutsuki, as Jigen wanted. During this training, Jigen constantly criticized Kawaki for being valuable only as a vessel for Kama and hit him every time he questioned him. Kawaki ended up undergoing major body changes as well.

Personality

Because of his difficult childhood, Kawaki is shown to be aggressive and irreverent towards people he dislikes or opposes. At the same time, despite his efforts to distance himself from others, he is not completely heartless. Indeed, he would show sympathy to weak and injured animals, or refuse to let innocent children get hurt. He can also remain calm and composed when questioning strangers, as when he was listening to Konohamaru Sarutobi's explanation of himself and his team. When not carried away by his temper, Kawaki is very observant and pragmatic, easily analyzing the course of the battle in front of him and the best way to react. Because of the tremendous pain he had endured by being forced to be a vessel of Kara, which he describes as hell, he would rather die than be stuck in that hell for the rest of his life. He even showed signs of post-traumatic stress, as just seeing dripping plant roots reminded him of his battles and made him gasp in horror. He seems to hate himself for who he has become over the years with Kara, stating that he would learn the Multi Cloning technique just so he could beat himself up to let off steam.

Kawaki harbors a deep resentment towards Kara, becoming very alert and aggressive when confronting the group members. He particularly resented Jigen for lying about his promises of protection, as evidenced by the way he quickly exploded in rage while unconscious when reminded that Jigen had adopted him, and later when he showed resentment when describing the experience he had with Jigen. However, although he seemed to be confident in his ability to defeat the Outsiders, he was aware that he could not defeat an Internal whose power was monstrous and showed that he feared them, sweating in Delta's presence. He was shocked that Naruto could be more powerful than Jigen, the strongest member of Kara. Even though he hated Jigen deeply and believed that with Naruto protecting him he was safe, Kawaki feared him because Jigen's arrival through his Kama frightened him, even worrying about his own life and Naruto's life. After seeing Naruto fight Delta and then being overtaken with ease by his adoptive father, when Jigen attacked Konoha to get him back and was about to face Naruto, Kawaki instantly surrendered, believing that a fight between the two of them could end in Naruto's defeat and death. This fear, however, at least after his change due to his stay in Konoha, changed as he fought against Jigen even though he knew that Jigen was too powerful. Although he was defeated effortlessly, he didn't bother to defend Naruto and insulted Jigen, and later, although he was described by Boro as being even worse than Jigen, he challenged him to save Naruto with the rest of Team 7. His hatred for Jigen (and later Isshiki) was so strong that he openly rejoiced in Isshiki's imminent death, even stepping on his remains while insulting him. Being used by Isshiki made him hate the rest of the Ôtsutsuki clan and he expressed his hatred towards Momoshiki. Kawaki's hatred for Kara also led him to be unsympathetic to his fellow experimenter, Code, as he suggested that Boruto turn Code into his vessel to prevent Momoshiki from destroying his individuality.

Due to his difficult childhood, he is a stranger to simple pleasures such as pastries, as he is openly surprised by their flavor. He is also constantly on guard, instinctively attacking a child who crosses him without hesitation, although he claims he only wanted to scare the child to show him the harshness of life.

Kawaki

Kawaki also seems to have a dry sense of humor, as evidenced by his mocking of Garô for his role in disfiguring his jaw in the past. He is also quite ruthless, quite capable of killing anyone who opposes him or makes him angry. In addition, Kawaki is also antisocial, showing little to no respect for others and being openly blunt and rude in his decisions and opinions, though he does have some manners, as he apologized when he did something wrong, even though he thought at first that it was not necessary, as shown by the way he apologized, even though it was not very sincere, about the way he broke the vase of flowers that Himawari had given to Hinata after seeing how much it hurt her. Also, he doesn't hesitate to fix his mistakes if necessary, as shown by the way Kawaki was willing to buy another vase, albeit reluctantly, in order for Boruto to agree to work with him. He also did not completely close his heart, according to Kurama, as Naruto did, albeit bitterly, by giving him advice against self-hatred. He even learned to appreciate his relationship with Naruto and his family, risking his life to save Himawari, although he insisted that it was to keep the Hokage alive to protect him.

With time and his new life in Konoha, Kawaki began to open up to others, apparently enjoying the game Extreme: Shinobi Image Scrolls and showing an interest in learning ninjutsu. In the anime, his neglected upbringing makes common foods fascinating novelties for him. He became much more responsible in the tasks given to him and relatively more calm and respectful. This change in nature is largely thanks to Naruto, who continually shows patience and compassion to the boy. Kawaki also came to respect the Seventh Hokage, apparently considering him a father figure. He offered to exchange an extremely rare card of the Fourth Hokage for a card of the Seventh Hokage, in the hope of learning more about Naruto. Later, upon learning that he shared similarities with Naruto, both of whom had had a difficult childhood, but Naruto had managed to pull through and find joy, Kawaki came to deeply admire Naruto and wanted to follow his example. He also became noticeably more reasonable, becoming less angry, even while under house arrest. More than that, he got angry with Jigen after Jigen insulted Naruto, ordering him never to speak ill of him. Later, he also came to respect Boruto, happy that Boruto openly considered him as a brother. His new loyalty to his surrogate family even led him to sacrifice his freedom to ensure their survival. More than that, he went without hesitation to the alternate dimension of Jigen to help Naruto. Facing Isshiki, Kawaki openly expressed that he would rather be dead than live in a world without Naruto, proudly considering himself a student of the Hokage.

Later, in the future, he was shown to be dark with a detached and gloomy outlook. Kawaki apparently came to despise the shinobi and wanted to end their era once and for all.

Apparence

Kawaki is a young man with gray eyes and bushy black hair, whose sides are shaved and blond in color. As Ino stated, despite his gruff demeanor, he is very handsome. In addition, he has a tattoo of the Roman numeral Ⅸ under his left eye, a pair of piercings on his right eyebrow and earrings. Kawaki is wearing a green shirt with a blue sleeveless jacket with gray stripes on the collar and dark pants with a studded belt. He has a Kama on the palm of his left hand in the shape of a diamond, which extends over the left half of his face, chest and arm, glowing red when activated. During the battle between Naruto and Delta, Kawaki lost his right forearm. It was temporarily replaced by an advanced prosthesis powered by Naruto's chakra. After the battle with Isshiki Ôtsutsuki, Amado restored his arm from his cells.

Later in his life, he was seen wearing a purple infinity scarf and belt, a kind of white tunic and a kind of knee-length jacket with an exposed chest and a purple scarf.

Kawaki

Skills

Although he is not a ninja, Kawaki is a remarkably powerful fighter, having undergone extensive combat training by Jigen, both armed and unarmed, to master his various techniques. In the past, he was able to destroy dozens of dangerous robot puppets. With the power he possesses, he would have killed Team Konohamaru with a single attack had Boruto not tapped into his own Kama and absorbed it, Delta openly praised Kawaki's power. Kawaki would possibly be an incredible shinobi if he could learn to use ninjutsu in addition to his Kama and Ninja Artifact.

Kâma

Kawaki was marked by the Kama of Isshiki Ôtsutsuki, which he acquired when the Ôtsutsuki marked him in the hope of making it his vessel. Thanks to his training under Jigen, Kawaki is able to activate the mark at will, although sometimes it activates out of his control, and to use its power properly. He can absorb any target with chakra and create large-scale explosions when he activates it. However, using the mark causes his body to overheat and he may end up losing consciousness. By synchronizing his Kama with Boruto, they can produce a time-space rift to enter different dimensions.

Having proved his compatibility with the brand, the genetic code of Kawaki's body is gradually rewritten to be reborn as a "perfect Ôtsutsuki". With the continued progression of this mark, Kawaki began to unconsciously enter a transformed state, causing a small horn to appear on the left side of his head. When Kawaki and Boruto came into contact, knowing that Boruto possessed Momoshiki's Kama, it created a resonance that accelerated the rate at which the two receptacles took control. Through the involuntary resurrection of Isshiki, Kawaki's being was largely written in Isshiki's image. This forced resurrection of Isshiki also led to the erasure of Kawaki's Kama. Later, however, he was marked with another Kama.

Physical changes

Kawaki's body was extensively modified by Amado, with microscopic technology implanted in his body that constantly altered his physiology through his circulatory and nervous systems, turning him into a living ninja science tool. After an initial examination, Katasuke Tôno felt that the cybernetics of his body were a work of art, as advanced as the prosthetic arm he had designed for Naruto Uzumaki, if not more so. He also said that unlike Mitsuki, who was a synthetic human who was genetically engineered using organic technologies, Kawaki was a human being transformed using inorganic technologies.

His Ninja Artifact takes the form of nanoscopic ninja scientific tools implanted throughout his body, which seem to be able to perform particular modifications at the cellular level, giving him unique superhuman abilities similar to a kekkei genkai.

For example, the tissues of his body can undergo rapid cell division, capable of regenerating a lost limb, or making it expand, and they can also undergo instant sclerosis or malacie to harden or soften. This allows him to partially transform his body, arming it to produce sharp blades or piercing tendrils; these growths can even be thrown or hurled as projectiles, allowing him to produce a myriad of tools and weapons for combat. This also gives him an accelerated healing speed, able to heal his wounds within minutes. He can also produce a powerful shockwave from his body, either as a concentrated blast or in any direction, even the ground beneath him.

When Kawaki lost his right arm permanently to Delta's destructive beam, Katasuke gave him a replacement prosthesis, which was no match for the advanced technology of his body. It siphoned off insignificant amounts of Naruto's chakra to function, and did not work when Naruto was sleeping or unconscious. Furthermore, Kawaki's modified body seems to reject this prosthesis because of the difference in the complexity of the technologies which ultimately makes them incompatible. After Isshiki's death, Amado repaired Kawaki's arm and restored it.

Kawaki

Physical strength

Kawaki specializes in close combat. His style is very agile and coordinated, performing acrobatics to avoid enemy attacks and using the environment around him to launch himself at the opponent. He is then able to unleash a barrage of blows with each of his limbs. He is also very resistant, even though he was already tired beforehand, he was able to endure Garô's assault and continue to fight effectively despite his bruised state. Kawaki later proved to be proficient in the use of a bo, capable of matching Boruto's sword skills.

Ninjutsu

Since he lives in Konoha and is interested in ninjutsu, he started to learn it from the Seventh Hokage. This includes chakra manipulation and shurikenjutsu, with which he showed a notable talent, mastering the basics in a short time. He is also able to perform more advanced techniques with one hand, including Katon and Multi Cloning. He also showed great ingenuity, using the limited skills he had acquired for clever traps. Kawaki instinctively learned the Ôtsutsuki's ability to hide his chakra signature.

New Era

Prologue

After the destruction of Konoha at some point, he and Boruto Uzumaki met at the Hokage Monument where Kawaki swore to defeat Boruto and told him that the shinobi era was over.

Receptacle Bow

After reaching Phase 3 as a receptacle for Kara's plans, Jigen wanted to test Kawaki's powers on the surface. Overhearing Jigen and Amado discussing it, Victor offered to transport him using his high-tech stealth airship. When the airship carrying Kawaki crashed in the Fire Country near the border, he left the scene, and some of Kara's autonomous puppets went after him. After traveling a good distance from the crash, he defeated all of the puppets chasing him before vanishing.

Arc Kawaki

When he was found by Team 7, the shinobi noticed that he had a mark identical to that of Boruto Uzumaki. When both marks began to hurt, Kawaki dreamed of his first encounter with Jigen, which caused him to suddenly wake up and destroy the area he was in. Asking who the team in front of him was, Konohamaru introduced himself and asked him for information about the crash. But the boy refused to give them any information and wanted to be left alone, Boruto then revealed that he also had a Kama, which led Kawaki to believe that they were Kara's pursuers. As they tried to explain to him that he had misunderstood, Garô appeared and announced his intentions to get Kawaki back. Launching another attack, Kawaki dodged it and began to fight while changing his body, despite his fatigue. As soon as Garô managed to overpower Kawaki, his Kama activated and strengthened him, leading Kawaki to destroy Garô's prosthetic arm. Moving towards Garo and absorbing his breath, Kawaki impaled him with his modified arm, before killing the Outsider with a shock wave. To his surprise, Boruto instinctively activated his mark to absorb the shockwave and protect his team. This made Kawaki more convinced than ever that they were with Kara.

Kawaki

Kawaki told Boruto to tell Jigen that if he pursued him, there will be more dead bodies. But their conversation was interrupted when smoke came out of his body, which led Kawaki to collapse and be examined by the shinobi. Finally, the Konoha ninjas decided to bring him to meet the Seventh Hokage. In the anime, Kawaki was taken to the Ryutan Advanced Research Center, where he was held until further notice. Attempting to escape, he obtained some ninja scientific tools to facilitate his escape, during which he was severely injured by Nue. Fleeing to a nearby village, he was pursued by Sumire Kakei, and when she found him, she realized the deep emotional scars Kawaki had carried since childhood and identified with him. Soon after, they were attacked by the police, forcing Kawaki to flee and fight his way out. Intercepted by Naruto, who had learned from Sumire that Kawaki was afraid to die. Naruto held Kawaki until he collapsed from exhaustion. When Kawaki woke up, he found himself in Konoha hospital, surrounded by Konoha shinobi. Learning that he was in Konoha, Kawaki tried to escape through the window of the room, but was held back by Shikamaru Nara. Afterwards, Naruto introduced himself as the Hokage. Later, after an agreement between the five Kage, it was decided that Kawaki would stay free in Konoha under Naruto's supervision.

Naruto escorted Kawaki through the village to his house, but he ran away because he did not want to be used. To his surprise, Naruto caught up with him effortlessly and blocked his path, which prompted Kawaki to continue on his way to the Hokage's house. There, he tried to run away again, but destroyed a vase, causing Naruto to assert his prowess and intimidate Kawaki into not running away again. When Boruto found out that Kawaki was going to live with them, he reluctantly apologized before introducing himself. Later, after the frustrated boys fought with each other, Kawaki revealed how he got his Kama and suggested that they work together to get rid of their marks. Telling Boruto that he would replace the vase, Naruto took him to find another one. On their way, he met Sarada Uchiwa. In the anime, they also met her and Chocho in front of a bakery store. There, Kawaki was treated to a snack, amazed by such flavors that he had never experienced before. Soon, Kakawi was taken to Yamanaka Florist.

There, Kawaki met Ino Yamanaka, who was assigned by Naruto to detect the enemies who were after him. But Kawaki had a panic attack after the flower roots reminded him of what he had experienced with Jigen. Seeing how traumatized Kawaki was, Naruto hugged him to comfort him, insisting that everything was fine. In the anime, while inviting Kawaki to lunch, he insisted that sharing his experiences with others was a great way to get closer to people. Back at the Uzumaki house with a new vase and flowers, Boruto refused the new vase and gave him glue to fix the one he broke, which angered Kawaki.

Kawaki

Later, while watching Boruto and Naruto train, Kawaki insisted that Boruto try to use the Kama, which prompted him to activate his own to activate Boruto's. The mutual respect and support between the two after the match ended surprised Kawaki, remembering his own difficult experience with father figures. Later, Naruto offered to train with Boruto next time, but Kawaki refused because he couldn't use chakra and, although Naruto insisted that anyone could learn to do so since chakra existed in everyone, Kawaki said that he would like to learn how to use Multi Cloning only to be able to hit himself and feel better when he was frustrated. Knowing the feeling of having nothing and no one, Naruto insisted that hating himself would not solve anything and that with friends he could change for the better, but Kawaki was not convinced of this. After that, Kawaki bitterly decided to fix the broken vase. While struggling to fix the vase, Boruto decided to accept Kawaki's offer to teach him what he knew about their Kama. Deciding to do so through hand-to-hand combat, the two boys quickly activated their respective Kama. Kawaki then threw a blast at Boruto to absorb it as he had done earlier, but Boruto injured his hand. Naruto ended the fight and asked them to perform the Seal of Reconciliation, which made their marks react. While Boruto had a vision, Kawaki insisted that he had not seen anything when asked if he had as well.

As Naruto was alerted by Ino to the presence of an intruder, he informed the children that a threat was approaching them. The group was soon approached by Delta, who demanded that Kawaki be handed over to her. Informing Naruto that she was an Interne and the threat she posed, Naruto asked Kawaki to play it safe while he fought her. Throughout the fight, Kawaki tried to calm Boruto down, explaining that Naruto was controlling the course of the fight, keeping him away from them by getting defensive so he could lash out. Delta finally released eye rays that Kawaki claimed were designed to overcome regeneration abilities. When Delta tried to use Himawari to put Naruto in the path of his eye beams, Kawaki shielded them from the beam, thinking that they would have died if Naruto had been hit and considered that he and Boruto were now even. As the battle continued, Naruto overcame Delta's absorption ability and immobilized her body with his Rasengan, before she self-destructed.

Kawaki

After the battle, Kawaki was brought to Katasuke to repair his arm. When the scientist informed him that the technology of his body was too advanced for him, Naruto gave Kawaki one of his prosthetic arms which he powered with his chakra. Shocked by Naruto's kindness, Kawaki asked to learn ninjutsu, Naruto agreed and started to train him. Afterwards, Kawaki trained in ninjutsu and continued to repair the vase. He also spent time with Boruto and his friends, during which he opened a pack of Extreme: Shinobi Image Scrolls and obtained a Fourth Hokage card, which he traded for Boruto's Seventh Hokage card. While Naruto was sleeping and Kawaki discovered that he was missing the last piece of the vase he had rebuilt, Kurama showed up to warn him not to go far from Naruto, which shocked the boy. Kurama explained his role as a guardian and set him straight about some false prejudices he had about Naruto. Kawaki was moved to hear how difficult Naruto's past had been and that he had been alone, just like him, understanding their similar pasts. Moved by all that Naruto had overcome, Kawaki wondered if he could become someone like him. Later, Kawaki impressed those present with his mastery of basic chakra control. When the conversation turned to the Kama, Kawaki admitted that Jigen was responsible for it and that they would have to fight him. Boruto supported Kawaki and to reinforce his support, he mentioned him as his brother.

Later, having returned home with Naruto, after giving up the idea of finding the last piece of the vase, Kawaki's Kama unexpectedly created a portal from which Jigen emerged. Having come to take Kawaki back with him, he pushed Naruto away, which led Kawaki to try to attack Jigen but was easily defeated. After belittling the Hokage, Kawaki displayed a horn in anger, while Naruto kicked Jigen away. Seeing that Jigen was getting stronger to fight the Hokage, Kawaki begged him not to harm the Hokage if he came with him. Agreeing to his terms, Naruto intervened, prompting Jigen to use Time-Space Ninjutsu to make the Hokage and himself disappear from the scene, much to Kawaki's amazement. Joined by Sarada, she questioned Kawaki about what had happened, during which his prosthetic arm suddenly stopped working, horrifying Kawaki who realized that Jigen had surely eliminated Naruto. As Boruto and Mitsuki arrived and asked for an explanation of the situation, Kawaki explained everything to them. But he was suddenly stopped by Shikamaru, who expressed his distrust towards him, while his team was locked in the area with a barrier. Questioning Kawaki about the recent events, Boruto vouched for Kawaki and as Kawaki continued to think about everything he had experienced with Naruto, he realized that the Hokage was alive when his prosthetic arm reactivated. By synchronizing his Kama with Boruto's, they were able to produce the same rift that Jigen had made earlier. However, Shikamaru refused to let anyone enter the rift, but Kawaki used his Kama to escape Shikamaru's technique while he and the genin entered the rift to find Naruto.

They arrived at a large rocky area, where they met Boro. As the children prepared to fight the Intern, Boro quickly showed his power, forcing them to go on the defensive as Boruto and Kawaki used their Kama to absorb the enemy's techniques. When Boro sapped their strength with his Black Mist, the combined efforts of Mitsuki and Sarada allowed the team to retreat. By analyzing Boro's mist, Sarada determined that it was a virus, prompting Mitsuki to administer antibodies to the team and Kawaki agreed to make her the team's leader. After creating an opening to attack Boro, Kawaki amplified Boruto's Rasengan with his Kama, destroying much of Boro's upper body before he regenerated. Rushing at Naruto, Kawaki broke the formation to protect Naruto, which led Boro to attack Kawaki with shuriken. Defeated by the trap, Boruto and Mitsuki confronted Boro with their various attacks, while Kawaki explained to Sarada the true nature of Boro's unlimited regeneration. Noting that they had to destroy the special core implanted inside Boro, Kawaki joined Boro's assault while Sarada searched for the object. Finally, she succeeded and hit him with her Chidori. After successfully removing the core, Boro's body began to mutate without his stabilizer. Despite Boro's vulnerable state, Kawaki insisted that it was too dangerous to approach him and that they should concentrate on the Hokage. Believing that they could use their Kama to create a rift as they had done to reach this dimension and free Naruto, Kawaki and Boruto concentrated on the seal, managing to free the unconscious Hokage. While the children were dealing with Naruto, Boro calmed down enough to turn his rage on the children, knocking out Mitsuki and Kawaki. Kawaki recovered just as Boruto defeated Boro, having unwittingly awakened Momoshiki Ôtsutsuki's will with the power of his Kama.

Kawaki

After the team returned to Konoha with Naruto, they were all taken to the hospital for treatment. In the anime, Kawaki joined Team 7 and the Konoha officials to discuss the events against Boro. Kawaki explained to them that each member of Kara was equipped with different types of ninja artifacts, giving them abilities other than ninjutsu. Afterwards, Kawaki discussed with Boruto his brief metamorphosis into Momoshiki, noting that he had recently undergone a similar situation against Jigen. Later, Kawaki was subjected to various tests, during which Katasuke Tôno determined that his body was rejecting the prosthetic arm due to its incompatible nature with Kawaki's chakra and nanotechnology, and that the continued use of the arm was causing him great pain. He took charge of the situation, rejecting an offer of painkillers and insisting that his body would not give in so easily. Boruto informed him that Naruto had recovered completely. In the anime, as Kawaki's new friends continued to help lift his spirits after the recent events with snacks and games, he was surprised to see that Sumire was so close to them despite the fact that she had quit the shinobi job. Hearing how determined the shinobi children were to help each other, Kawaki eventually accepted Sumire's offer to give him some painkillers. After being released from the hospital, Kawaki decided that it would be best to leave the village because his Kama would only endanger everyone. But before he could do so, he found himself helping Himawari to care for a wounded and lonely white wolf. Despite the girl's efforts, the wolf was eventually killed by a bear. Soon after, Kawaki went to the village gate, where he was intercepted by Boruto who found his farewell note early. Between Boruto's words of support and his insistence that Konoha is always looking out for his people, including himself, Kawaki finally decided to stay.

Later, Shikadai was captured by Amado, who wanted to talk to Shikamaru and Kawaki recognized his voice. When Amado was brought in for questioning about his desire to become a citizen of Konoha, Kawaki attended his interrogation. He confirmed Amado's high position in the organization and the danger of leaving the headquarters. Kawaki was surprised to learn that Amado and Koji had conspired against Jigen and were responsible for the airship crash that allowed him to escape. When Amado had his glasses removed to project the meeting between Koji and Jigen, Kawaki watched the scene. Kawaki continued to listen to Amado's explanation of his and Koji's goal of killing Jigen, his nature as an imperfect vessel of Isshiki Ôtsutsuki and Kawaki's own nature as a perfect vessel of Isshiki. As Jigen came closer to death, Sasuke wondered if this meant that Isshiki would resurrect in Kawaki's body. Kawaki rushed to attack Amado, but was stopped by Sasuke. Amado clarified the situation, explaining that unlike Jigen, Kawaki's Kama had not yet completely extracted Isshiki's data into his body and that when he died, a Kama would automatically resurrect the Ôtsutsuki who had implanted him, no matter what his will was. Since Jigen had been killed, Isshiki was then forced to be reborn in him, even though he was the dead body of an imperfect receptacle. This also triggered Kawaki's Kama, which raged for a while before disappearing, leaving Kawaki unconscious. Amado explained that Isshiki's resurrection was unstable and that he would look for Kawaki again to mark him. Soon after, they were alerted to Isshiki's arrival in the village. While Sasuke and Naruto went to confront Isshiki, the unconscious Kawaki was taken to an underground facility for protection.

Kawaki dreamed of Jigen's words before he woke up. When he woke up, he was surprised to see that his Kama was gone and Amado explained the situation to him. Shikamaru told him that he was free because he was no longer the vessel of Isshiki, but Kawaki pointed out that Isshiki still wanted to mark him. Amado remained optimistic, because they did not need to beat Isshiki, only to prevent him from applying another Kama until Jigen's body was exhausted. Kawaki was worried that Boruto had joined the fight against Isshiki, but Amado pointed out that Boruto could be useful in the fight, which intrigued everyone. Amado explained that Boruto, as the bearer of a Kama, was invaluable to Isshiki. Since the Divine Tree could only reach full maturity by sacrificing an Otsutsuki, once Boruto was fully transformed by his mark, Isshiki could sacrifice Boruto instead of himself. Kawaki was furious at Amado's calm attitude and demanded to understand how the scientist had planned everything. Amado insisted that he was only making the best possible choices. As the Konoha ninjas managed to calm Kawaki down, Amado casually asked him if he was more angry at his helplessness, or at not having a purpose without his Kama. Kawaki then remained silent.

As Amado was intrigued by Kawaki's prosthetic arm, he noted that he could easily restore Kawaki's original arm. Kawaki noticed that the chakra in his arm was dwindling, which meant that Naruto was in danger. Suddenly, a rift swallowed him up and he found himself in Isshiki's dimension, pulled there by the chakra connection between his prosthetic arm and Naruto's chakra. Isshiki turned around to mark him. But as Kawaki tried to escape from Isshiki, Isshiki chose to use Kawaki's affection for Naruto against him, attacking the Hokage on the ground. Kawaki finally showed up and attacked using the ninjutsu that Naruto had taught him. Isshiki overpowered him easily and marked Kawaki again, proudly declaring his victory, but the mark disappeared. Isshiki, horrified, wondered how this was possible, Kawaki was then revealed to be only a clone. Finally, Isshiki's time ran out and he crumbled into dust, which Kawaki proudly stomped on.Kawaki

As Kawaki turned his attention to Naruto and checked his condition, Boruto suddenly attacked Sasuke, stabbing his Rinnegan, this was justified by the fact that the boy was under Momoshiki's control. Thinking about his many discussions and arguments with Boruto, Kawaki called him and attacked Momoshiki. Momoshiki noticed that Kawaki's Kama had developed enough to make him close to the Otsutsuki, so he decided to sacrifice the boy to grow a Divine Tree. Sasuke explained to Kawaki what he had deduced about Momoshiki's chakra expenditure and resurgence, and they decided to replenish Boruto's chakra so that his personality would resurface. Momoshiki neutralized Sasuke with a Disappearing Swirling Orb and left with Kawaki. Kawaki tried to self-immolate, forcing Momoshiki to absorb him, which was enough for Boruto to resurface and regain control of his body. As he collapsed from exhaustion, Boruto apologized for what he had done and Kawaki apologized in return.

Kawaki was then alerted by Naruto's sudden loss of consciousness. The Hokage quickly woke up and revealed that the use of Baryon Mode against Isshiki caused Kurama to die inside him, depriving Naruto of the fox's chakra and powers. With Sasuke's Rinnegan and Kawaki's Kama gone, it was up to Boruto to use his mark to bring everyone back. Boruto struggled with the fear of Momoshiki reappearing. This prompted Kawaki to speak frankly to Boruto, insisting that they would find a way to free Boruto from his burden, but they had to return home first. Finally, Boruto was able to create a loophole, allowing everyone to return to Konoha. Boruto said that he felt stronger by Kawaki's side, who laughed at him.

In the anime, Naruto's reduced chakra level made him unable to charge Kawaki's prosthesis properly. Later, he was approached by Sumire to help him. Finally, Kawaki's arm was restored by Amado. After returning the prosthesis to Naruto, Naruto offered Kawaki the chance to become a genin. Kawaki told him that he would think about it.

Kawaki

Arc Repassage of the Chûnin Examination

In the anime, after the attack of Isshiki, Naruto organized another Chûnin Exam. Delighted to have passed the first written test, Boruto bought taiyaki from Kawaki. Kawaki thought this was strange and Himawari warned him against eating before dinner, which he ignored. The next day, after Boruto and the rest of his team qualified for the finals and decided to train, Kawaki declined his offer to train with him and Mitsuki, telling Boruto not to make a fool of himself.

On the day of the finals, Naruto invited Kawaki to watch the matches, saying that he was spending too much time at home. Kawaki refused at first, but changed his mind after Naruto pointed out that he could learn many different jutsu and watched the matches from the stands. During the second match, he started to get bored. He noticed Team Shinki coming and left after Shinki continued to stare at him, so Shinki followed him out of the arena. Shinki introduced himself to Kawaki and told him that he should watch the next match, which was between Sarada and Chôchô. Furious at being told what to do, he grabbed Shinki by the collar, but Shinki pushed him away with his Iron Scale. He went back inside and reiterated that Kawaki should watch the game. Kawaki returned as well and after Sarada won, Shinki asked him if it was a game worth watching. Back home after the game was over, Naruto asked him what he thought. He replied that everyone seemed too desperate to win, but that it would not be bad to start as a genin.

Later, Kawaki was evaluated for his qualification as a shinobi by participating in various D rank missions with different teams. However, he constantly overstepped the boundaries or showed no interest, preferring to focus on his personal shinobi training and keep his distance from others. While trying to figure out what he wanted, he came across Sarada, who insisted that the best way to grow was to work with others. Finally, Shikamaru and Naruto assigned him a C rank escort mission with Team 10 as his last chance to qualify as a shinobi. His lack of interest and initiative put off the client, Mozuku. During the mission, they were attacked by assassins who wanted the medicine Mozuku was carrying. After defeating one of them, Mozuku revealed his true situation. While Shikadai ordered everyone to go back to Konoha to take care of the injured Chocho, Kawaki chose to ignore him and continue with Mozuku. Catching up with Kurobane, they were caught in his drying fog. Kawaki was able to see through his tactics and attacked, clearing the fog. However, Kurobane was able to launch a surprise attack, which mortally wounded Mozuku while he was protecting Kawaki. Shikadai and Boruto arrived, allowing him to defeat Kurobane for good. Mozuku used his last moments to beg Kawaki to deliver the medicine to his sensei. While Boruto and Shikadai dealt with other enemies as they reached the checkpoint, Kawaki kept his promise. Back in Konoha, Shikadai took him to the graveyard and explained that as teammates, they shared the good and bad times of the missions. Later, he asked Naruto for another chance to prove himself and Naruto told him that according to Shikadai's report, he had proved himself worthy of being a shinobi, so he proclaimed him genin. Kawaki vowed to become stronger and not to repeat the same mistakes.Arc Code

He then met Boruto, who was taken off active duty so that his Kama could be put under surveillance. Understanding Boruto's dilemma, he noted that there might be a way to save him. He told Boruto about Code, an Intern with an obsessive devotion to Isshiki who had failed to become a receptacle like Kawaki. Despite this failure, he obtained a white Kama and became even more powerful than Delta or Boro. Kawaki suggested that he find a way for Boruto to create his own Kama and implant it into Code so that he could resurrect using Code's body.

Later, Kawaki joined Team 7 in training exercises and was annoyed to hear that Boruto was taking experimental pills to stop the transformation process into Otsutsuki rather than working on transferring the Kama to Code. He also expressed his dissatisfaction with such basic training methods. When asked how to proceed instead, he began to attack his friends, insisting that extreme fighting was the best way, as it was Jigen's brutal training methods that allowed Kawaki to become stronger so quickly. As Kawaki proved that he was quickly adapting his body modifications to his new ninjutsu, his attacks became more aggressive, which did not please Boruto. Boruto and Kawaki made a bet that the winner of the fight would dictate his training style. As Kawaki used his modified powers more, Boruto used his Kama to absorb a breath from him and attacked back using Raiton. Kawaki instinctively tried to absorb it, still used to relying on his Kama. This opening allowed Boruto to quickly win the fight. Kawaki pouted at his defeat, knowing how much weaker he was now without the mark, but Boruto saw through Kawaki's mind. He insisted that Kawaki didn't have to handle everything alone and that he should trust his friends to help him. Kawaki respected the terms of the bet, but expressed his disgust with Boruto's methods, vowing to become stronger by any means necessary.

Later, at the end of a maintenance section, Kawaki woke up from a nightmare in which he saw Code and declared that he was no longer a vessel for Isshiki. Amado corrected him, pointing out that even though Isshiki's soul was gone, the genes of the Ôtsutsuki in his body were still present. Kawaki did not appreciate these comments and Amado revealed that he knew that Kawaki was planning to mark Code with a Kama of Boruto. He was skeptical about this plan, because Code already had a different Kama. He mentioned the possibility of branding Kawaki again, because with Isshiki's soul gone, he could access his powers without fear of possession. He appealed to Kawaki's desire to protect Naruto, pointing out the likelihood that Code would defeat him easily after the loss of Kurama, but Kawaki refused and walked away. He continued to think about the previous discussion and passed Shikadai, who noticed his troubled look. He knew that the villagers were concerned about Kawaki, even though they did not know about his connection with Kara, and insisted that Kawaki ignore them. Shikadai reminded him that he had friends and a home in Konoha. Kawaki thanked him for his words.
Kawaki

A week later, although he was allowed to walk alone in the village, Kawaki was still being watched by the shinobi. Because of the rumors that Shikadai had warned him about, the civilians were also staring at him and whispering about him. Kawaki enjoyed watching the village from the Hokage Monument, feeling that he didn't really belong there, as Isshiki had constantly told him. However, Naruto refuted his claims, even considering him as his son. Back home, they finally had time to prepare a proper dinner to welcome him. Kawaki tried to convince Himawari to use the vase he had bought instead of the one he had repaired, but she thought it made the vase even more special. Recognizing his goal of becoming a shinobi, Boruto lent Kawaki his headband, since he already had Sasuke's, telling him to return it to her once he had earned his. In the evening, Naruto insisted again that Konoha was a place where he could live in peace, otherwise he would fail as Hokage. Kawaki thought about Amado's offer to brand him again with a Kama and dismissed it, thinking that he still had a way to protect the village and Naruto.

Later, while he was still being watched, he learned more about the workings of the village security from his friends. An offhand comment by Inojin about how suppressing his chakra could help him escape detection gave Kawaki an idea. That night, he subtly switched places with a clone and left the village while hiding his chakra. But he was discovered by Boruto, who asked the clone what he was doing. The real Kawaki was impressed, thinking that Boruto was not affected by the hiding because of his own Ôtsutsuki characteristics. Kawaki's ruse was discovered by Boruto, who dispelled his clone. Outside the village, Kawaki met Code and the two of them fought for a while, before being overpowered by Code. He offered Code to kill him to get revenge on Isshiki if he left Konoha alone. Code found his proposal ridiculous and continued to hit him, revealing his inheritance of Isshiki's will and plans. He also explained that Kawaki was no longer the target of his revenge, because someone else wanted to meet him. Before Code could take Kawaki with him, he was intercepted by Boruto.

Kawaki and Boruto argued about each other's actions, with Kawaki insisting that what he was doing was for Naruto's protection. He deduced that someone must have influenced Code to refrain from taking revenge on him and wanted to leave with Code to negotiate with them. Boruto, who wanted to protect Kawaki, disagreed and began to fight Code while Kawaki watched, until Boruto began to draw more and more on his Kama. To Kawaki's and Code's surprise, Boruto kept control of himself and told Kawaki that he thought it was due to Amado's medicine, which Kawaki found unreliable. As Boruto managed to pressure Code, Kawaki decided not to go with him, explaining that his only purpose was to help Naruto. He explained to Boruto the nature of Code's claw marks and was surprised when Boruto fainted.

Kawaki feared that Boruto would suffer side effects from taking Amado's medicine, his concerns proved correct when the boy suddenly rose as Momoshiki, who began to attack Code. He tried to use Kawaki as a hostage, but Momoshiki was able to separate them with a Swirling Orb that hit Code. Kawaki tried to fight him, but was saved by the arrival of Naruto and Shikamaru. Kawaki begged Naruto to run away, fearing that he would die. Naruto refused and prepared to fight. When Code took Shikamaru hostage, Momoshiki decided to kill Naruto, who was also a threat to him. Kawaki stepped in and absorbed Momoshiki's Swirling Mega Orb, possessing the Kama again.

Jumping into the future

Following the destruction of Konoha, four years after their meeting with Team Konohamaru, Kawaki and Boruto clashed at the destroyed Hokage Monument, where Kawaki vowed to defeat him and told Boruto that the era of the shinobi was over.
