Maki Zenin is a major character in Jujutsu Kaisen and one of the main protagonists of the prequel series, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Tokyo Exorcism School. She is currently a junior at the Tokyo Exorcism School with Yuta Okkotsu, Panda and Toge Inumaki. She is the twin sister of Mai Zenin and the daughter of Ogi Zenin.
Originally from the Zenin clan, Maki has always been rejected by them for her lack of occult energy. She decided to leave her clan and become an exorcist so that they would regret their mistreatment of her and put an end to them.

Maki is a tall athletic young woman with black eyes and long hair of the same color tied in a ponytail. In the anime, Maki's hair is green. She has bangs and wears a pair of glasses that allows her to see the plagues. Maki's uniform consists of the traditional long-sleeved jacket with a black skirt and leggings.
During her first year at the exorcism school, Maki had bangs on the side, tied her hair in a ponytail and wore the same type of glasses. As for her school uniform, Maki wore a long-sleeved black jacket with a black skirt and light-colored leggings.
During practice, Maki wore a black jersey with dark cuffs, a collar, dark shorts over black pants and white shoes. His casual outfit consists of a white hoodie over a black and white horizontal striped shirt, white shorts over black pants and white boots.
As a child, Maki had black bangs and her hair came down to her chin. She wore a red kimono with a black belt. When she left the Zenin clan, Maki wore a white yukata and a black hakama.
As a result of the events that occurred during the Shibuya Drama, Maki was left with burns all over her body, including the right half of her face, which she hid under a bandage. Under this bandage, Maki has a scar that obstructs her right eye. She now has short hair and also wears a cape on her uniform with a belt at the level of the waist. Later, Maki abandons this cloak after her passage with the Zenin and exposes the scar on her eye.
Personality
Maki is a very stubborn person who tends to be quite direct. She has a strong will and motivates herself to escape her family of exorcists. All her life, she has been mistreated for being a woman and not an exorcist by the Zenins, as she was born without the ability to use occult energy. Despite the circumstances surrounding her, she wanted to become an extremely strong person, so she decided to leave the clan. Before leaving, she declared that she would return to be the next leader of the Zenin family.
Rejected by her own family, Maki has a close relationship with her classmates with whom she assumes the role of leader. She is very hard on them in training, very impatient and often angry. She wants to see them grow stronger while fighting alongside her and has taught many of her peers how to properly handle a wide variety of weapons and objects.
In her first year, she was a somewhat bitter, direct and angry young woman. Because of her abrupt actions, she had a hard enough time opening up to other people, and when she felt she could be accepted by others, it was too hard on herself and she tried to strongly reject the kindness of those around her. By her second year, she became a much more passive, kind, and empathetic person with the rest of her classmates.
All the students at the Tokyo Exorcism School respect her, and Yuji could feel her aura of leadership even before he got to know her. On missions, Maki is very professional and is always focused on the task at hand. She follows orders and may even work cordially with her family members if the task requires it.
History
Past
Maki was born into the Zenin clan as Ogi's daughter and Mai's older twin sister. Because of her inability to see the plagues, Maki was often considered the braver but also the more incapable of the two twins. Maki wanted to become stronger even with her inability to see the plagues, so she left the clan to hone her skills, but only after declaring that she would become the head of the family one day. However, the Zenin clan sought to stifle her efforts every step of the way, even preventing her promotion to exorcist, despite her obvious talent.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0
Maki is with Panda and Toge when they discuss the new transfer student. Later, when Yuta is introduced to the class, Maki notices that Yuta is cursed and prepares to attack him. Satoru Gojo warns them, but the scourge Rika Orimoto shows up to defend Yuta. Satoru then tells the class about Yuta's situation and introduces each student to him. Maki is then paired with Yuta for a practical exercise but expresses his displeasure about Yuta being accepted to the exorcism school.
Later, Satoru brings Maki and Yuta to an elementary school where two children have been captured by plagues. When three plagues appear, Maki gives Yuta a lesson and then easily exorcises the spirits. As they head inside the school, Maki is surprised to see no plagues and asks Yuta to see her student ID. She is then stunned when she discovers that Yuta is an S class exorcist while he warns her that there is a plague behind her. Yuta and Maki are then swallowed by the plague and inside they discover the missing children. Maki suddenly falls to the ground to the great dismay of Yuta. Maki then asks him why he came to the exorcism school, to which Yuta replies that he wants to have enough confidence to live. Maki encourages Yuta to exorcise the scourge, which leads Yuta to put on his ring and make Rika appear and attack the spirit. Once freed, Yuta takes them to the exit. Maki is then hospitalized with the children.
Three months later, Maki trains Yuta in swordplay under the eyes of Panda, Toge and Satoru. When Panda tells Maki that she has all her chances, it makes her angry and the two of them start to argue and fight. Satoru says to let Panda and Maki train, while giving a mission to Toge and Yuta. After their mission is over, Yuta runs into Maki and asks her how to pour occult energy into her sword, but she tells him that she can't help him.
A few days later, Maki is with Yuta, Panda and Toge when Suguru Geto appears before them. Maki then listens to Suguru explain to Yuta that he wants to kill all the non-exorcists. As he is forced to leave, Maki listens to Suguru announce an all-out war on December 24.
On December 24, Maki enters one of the high school classrooms and sees Yuta sitting on a chair. She sits down next to him and the two of them talk and Maki explains her situation. Yuta tells her that he wants to become someone like her one day and wants to support her fully. Maki is then embarrassed by this and leaves. However, both of them are stopped by a curtain that has been put up over the school. Maki goes to confront the intruder who turns out to be Suguru. Unfortunately, he manages to defeat her. After that, Yuta shows up and saves her with Panda and Toge. After Yuta defeats Suguru, Maki goes to check Yuta's condition with Panda and Toge. Maki then watches Rika's curse being undone, then Satoru shows up and informs everyone that Yuta is a distant relative of his. A few days later, Maki is waiting for Yuta and Satoru, with Panda and Toge.
Arc Initiation to the Occult
Then in first grade, Maki approaches the seconds Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki, asking them why they are sad. From a distance, Panda whispers to her that their classmate Yuji Itadori recently passed away. This shocks Maki who blames Panda and Toge for not telling her earlier.
Regardless of this, she asks the sophomores to consider participating in the Twin High School Tournament, a tournament between the two exorcism schools in Japan. Motivated to become stronger in memory of their deceased friend, Megumi and Nobara accept Maki's request to join the Twin High School Tournament.
Afterwards, Maki and the other firsts help the seconds train before the tournament. Later, when Megumi talks with the others about how he should carry weapons without occupying his hands, Maki and Panda let him know that many exorcists use evil spirits. Toge then intervenes and points out that Megumi manages to find a way with her shadow.
A few days later, Maki is with Toge and Panda when the latter worries for the latter because some of the Kyoto students might accompany the Kyoto principal who is visiting the exorcism school in Tokyo. Maki wonders if Mai will be there and Panda tells her that she should expect anything. Maki then comes to Nobara's help who is fighting against Mai. The two twins provoke each other, which allows Nobara to attack Mai by the last one. Afterwards, Maki explains to Nobara her family situation, which makes Nobara admire Maki even more for staying strong.
Bow Tournament
On the day of the Twin High School Tournament, Maki is with the other students from Tokyo when the students and staff from the Kyoto school arrive. After Satoru is revealed that Yuji is still alive and the instructors explain the rules of the event, Maki attends a meeting with the other Tokyo students where they discuss their plan of action.
When the event starts, Maki walks around the tournament site with the other Tokyo students until they meet Aoi Todo. Maki then separates from the group with Megumi and talks with him about how the Kyoto students might be planning to kill Yuji. They then decide to go back to help Yuji, and Maki and Megumi meet Noritoshi Kamo and Kasumi Miwa. Maki confronts Kasummi, but asks why she wants to fight alone. Kasumi replies that it's to prove her worth as an exorcist and get promoted, to which Maki says she won't hold back. As they fight, Kasumi notices that Maki is stronger than she thought. Kasumi fights back but Maki easily distracts her and manages to get close to Kasumi and then throws her to the ground, taking her sword. Maki then leaves, taking Kasumi's sword with her.
Maki meets her sister Mai and the two begin to fight. Maki easily counters all of Mai's shots and closes the distance between them. Once Mai has used up all her ammunition, Maki closes in. However, Mai uses her spell to build another bullet but at the cost of a lot of occult energy and fires it at Maki. Maki manages to catch it and Mai is defeated. Mai then asks Maki why she left. She says that being a simple servant of the Zenin clan didn't bother her as long as Maki was with her, to which Maki replies by saying that she would have regretted it. Maki then apologizes to her sister and leaves.
When intruders invade the tournament, Maki notices that a curtain covers the site. She then comes to the aid of Megumi who is fighting against Hanami. The two students then attack Hanami together using cursed objects and the Jade Dog, Totality. However the scourge manages to plant a seed feeding on occult energy in Megumi. As Maki is caught by Hanami, Megumi decides to leave to help her but Maki stops her, saying it's time for them to retire. Suddenly, Yuji and Aoi show up and save them. Maki and Megumi are then carried by Panda who carries them to the outside of the curtain to get help.
Once the intruders have been subdued, Maki attends a meeting with the other students and instructors to see if they want to continue the tournament. The students all agree to continue the tournament and it is decided that the last event of the competition will be a baseball game. As Aoi is just chatting with Yuji during the game, Maki intentionally throws a ball in his head and everyone congratulates him. When the game is over, the Tokyo team wins the tournament thanks to Yuji's home run.
Yasohachi Bridge Mission Arch
At the exorcism school, Maki and Panda practice while Toge sits and watches them. Panda sits down and asks the two if they know about what happened with the seconds, which Maki confirms. Maki refuses to let them pass by, she gets up and suddenly jumps up to attack Panda.
After the tournament against Kyoto, Maki is nominated by Mei Mei and Aoi for a promotion to the rank of class 1 exorcist.
Shibuya Arc Drama
On October 31, Maki is with Naobito and Nobara at the entrance of the restaurant avenue of Shibuya Mark City mall when they are informed of the situation by Akari Nitta who also tells them to stay back. Later, Maki, Naobito and Nobara go to save some civilians who are attacked by altered humans inside the curtain surrounding Shibuya. Once the altered humans are neutralized, Akari finds them and informs them again about what happened. Maki then asks Nobara and Akari to go to Kiyotaka's location while she deals with the rest of the altered humans.
Maki and Naobito meet Kento Nanami, and then the three of them go to Shibuya station. On the way, Naobito tries to make Maki leave, but Maki turns the table and says that Naobito has been drinking. When the three encounter an evil spirit, Maki watches as Naobito confronts the S-class scourge, Dagon. When the latter releases a torrent of water, Maki manages to get out of it. After Naobito manages to distract Dagon, Maki and Kento join him and attack the scourge. Dagon manages to defend himself, while Maki thinks about how humiliating it was to be saved by Naobito during the confrontation. When Naobito manages to understand how Dagon defends himself, the three of them overwhelm the scourge with attacks and force Dagon to retreat.
However, Maki, Naobito and Kento are suddenly trapped in Dagon's Territory Extension, and Maki is instantly hit by a territory spell. Dagon uses his Silurian Horde attack, then Kento advises Maki to strike with all his might. After overpowering Naobito and Kento, Dagon attacks Maki but Maki comes back to attack. Suddenly, Megumi bursts into the territory and manages to give Maki the Floating Cloud. Maki then uses the cursed object to fight Dagon and manages to injure him. However, she retreats when Megumi creates an exit. Maki then arrives at the portal but is surprised when Toji Fushiguro passes through it.
Toji takes the Floating Cloud from her by force, which surprises Maki. As Maki watches Toji fight Dagon, she wonders who he is, to which Naobito replies that Toji is just a ghost. Maki is then impressed by his way of fighting. Once Toji has finished exorcising the curse and his Territory Extension is deactivated, Toji drags Megumi to another place. Distracted, she doesn't notice Jogo's presence, who is crying for his fallen comrade. Maki watches as the spirit turns on them and burns Kento alive. Before she can even realize it, Jogo moves towards Maki and burns her in turn.
Yuji's Execution Bow
Maki is finally saved after the events in Shibuya, but is in critical condition according to the Zenin family.
Arc Preparations for the Tracking
Maki waits with Yuki Tsukumo at the exorcism school for Yuji, Megumi, Yuta and Choso to come. When Yuta sees Maki with her burns, he rushes to see her and asks her if it doesn't bother her. Yuki explains that the reason why Maki is still alive is her physical strength, although the burn scars will remain. Choso then explains to the two women that thanks to his connection with the Nine Phases Fetuses, he will be able to find the exact location of Tengen's domain. Maki then questions who he is and Yuji says that he is in a way her big brother.
After that, they all go to the basement of the exorcism school and arrive at the Dead Star Pavilion. Once there, they don't see anything and decide to leave but at the same time Tengen arrives and holds them back. Yuki asks Tengen why he sealed the Dead Star Pavilion for them, and tells them that he was afraid they would sympathize with Kenjaku. Confused, Yuki asks him who Kenjaku is and Tengen tells them that he is the exorcist residing in Suguru Geto's body and formerly in Noritoshi Kamo's. When Tengen explains that Kenjaku's objective is to make him assimilate by force into humanity, Maki asks why not refuse the assimilation. Tengen answers that his current physical composition is close to a plague and that he can be absorbed by Kenjaku's spell.
After Yuki and Choso are appointed as his bodyguards, Tengen explains them how to unseal Satoru. He gives them the "Backside" of the Edge of Mercy and tells them that in order to force its opening, they will either need the Heavenly Spear or the Black Thread. However, Tengen also tells them that the Celestial Spear was either sealed or destroyed by Satoru and that Satoru also destroyed the Black Thread. Yuta adds that he had gone to look for the Black Thread with Miguel but that they didn't find anything. However, Tengen tells them that they have another asset, Hana Kurusu, a thousand-year-old exorcist and participant of the Murderous Hunt who can annihilate the spells.
Afterwards, Maki and the others review and analyze the rules of the Murderous Stalk to come up with an effective plan. Everyone is assigned a role, and Maki says that she will find Panda before the game and then orders Yuji and Megumi to find Kinji Hakari as agreed before but to come back if it goes wrong. Yuji then asks if Kinji is that strong, and Yuta tells him that he might be stronger than him, which Maki denies. After that, Maki, Yuji, Megumi and Yuta leave.
Some time later, Maki arrives at the Zenin's domain and is greeted coldly by Naoya Zenin. This last one insults Maki but she is not reached. She then continues her way to the cursed reserve of the clan but falls on her mother who tells her that she should not enter. Maki then shows her the keys which were given to her by Megumi who accepts in the meantime to become the new chief of the clan. She then falls on her father with Mai bloody at her feet. Ogi reveals to her that there are no more cursed objects and then they have a short sword fight that Maki loses. The two sisters are then dragged by Ogi to a pit filled with plagues.
She then leaves and runs into several members of the Kukuru unit of the Zenin clan. Maki eliminates them all without effort and now faces the Hei, the elite unit of the clan. However, she absolutely dominates all the Hei, slitting the throats of Chojuro and Nobuaki, decapitating Jinichi and killing Ranta Zenin. Naoya arrives and confronts her asking if she has a human heart. Maki answers by saying that she doesn't have one anymore because it was taken from her.
A fight between Maki and Naoya follows. The latter manages to grab Maki's arm and uses the Projection Technique on her to "freeze" her and then sends her flying. He continues to attack Maki who is unable to resist the blows and decides to use his maximum speed to try to defeat her, however, to his surprise, Maki prepares to retaliate by using Shiranui. Instead of attacking her directly, Naoya feints and goes behind her to prepare to finish her off. However, Maki surprises him and punches him, leaving him bleeding on the ground.
After that, Maki finds her mother who despite her pleas is cut the neck. After going back to look for Mai's body, Maki is stopped by Momo Nishimiya who starts crying when she sees Mai dead. Maki puts Mai in Momo's arms and leaves the Zenin's domain without saying a word.
Skills and Cometencies
The exorcist class 4 does not reflect the real combat ability at all, she could for example easily exorcise a class 2 scourge. Her promotion was blocked for years because of the Zenin clan. Maki is an effective exorcist despite her lack of occult energy, which she makes up for with her physical abilities as well as her mastery of a wide assortment of different weapons. She is second only to Yuji in terms of physical prowess among the students of the Tokyo exorcism school.
Compared to other exorcism students, Maki is often underestimated. However, she was able to effortlessly defeat Kasumi Miwa as well as completely dominate her sister in a fight. Against S-class scourges, Maki proved to be a valuable asset in battle.
After Mai took away all of Maki's occult energy when she died, Maki's physical abilities increased drastically. As well as her physical abilities, her aura became more imposing and terrifying. The overwhelming atmosphere that emanated from her has been compared several times to Toji Fushiguro's, especially by Ogi and Naoya. In battle, all her abilities also increased dramatically. For example, she was able to decapitate her father in one move while he was on guard and to massacre all the members of the Kukuru unit as well as the Hei who were known until then as the elite unit of the Zenin clan. Maki single-handedly slaughtered the entire Zenin clan forces leaving her family in ruins.
Weaponry: Maki is able to wield a wide assortment of different weapons, and is considered an expert with all kinds of weapons. She primarily uses spears in battle, but is fully capable of switching between weapons. She is also quite capable of incorporating martial arts such as aikido into close combat. Maki is also a very competent teacher. Not only did she make Yuta a swordsman, but she also helped Megumi Fushiguro to learn how to handle different weapons.
Skilled in hand-to-hand combat: Other than her mastery of weapons, one of Maki's main characteristics is surely her hand-to-hand skills. She is able to use several types of martial arts including aikido with which she shows great mastery capable of adapting the martial art to any situation especially by coupling it with her mastery of weapons. Thanks to her advantageous physique, Maki can surprise her opponents and very quickly take the ascendancy.
After the events of the Zenin clan, we can note that his skills in hand-to-hand combat have drastically evolved in correlation with his physical abilities, capable of beating powerful opponents with his bare hands, especially the Hei, including Naoya, without the exclusive use of weapons.
High Tactical Intelligence: Raised by the Zenin clan, Maki has a good understanding of all aspects of the exorcism world. She can read the movements of others through their personalities. It was Maki who came up with the Tokyo team's initial strategy to counteract Aoi Todo's spirit and brute strength during the Twin High School Tournament.
Superhuman Strength: Maki possesses an extraordinarily high level of strength, able to overpower weaker opponents with ease. She managed to knock out Aoi Todo, a notoriously strong student, by hitting him in the face with a baseball. Maki also broke a spear on his thigh, something no normal human would be able to do.
After losing her occult energy, Maki displayed pure Herculean strength. Not only was she able to free herself from the giant earthen hands of Chojuro Zenin's spell, but she was also able to get out of the embrace of Ranta Zenin's spell killing him because of the pressure she was exerting. Moreover, with a single punch, she was able to end her fight with Naoya, disfiguring his face at the same time.
Superhuman speed and reflexes: Maki is extremely fast and has superhuman reflexes, enough for a scourge like Hanami to recognize her prowess. She is very mobile and can even stop a pistol shot with her bare hands.
As mentioned above, Maki's abilities have drastically increased after the loss of all her occult energy. With her speed and reflexes being no exception, Maki revealed an uncommon speed and reaction time. During her fight against the Kukuru unit, Maki slaughtered all the members of the squad as they charged at her simultaneously. In only a short time Maki decapitated, sliced and killed all of her opponents. Against Naoya, Maki was able to follow the latter's hypersonic speed and was able to end the fight with a single punch while the latter was using his maximum speed.
Very high durability and vitality: Maki was able to come out of a close range attack from Jogo's spell (flame spell). Although the attack left her unconscious for a while and severely injured her, she was able to withstand it better than the other class 1 exorcists [Kento and Naobito] who were with her. She was able to recover from her injuries in a few days to the point where she could resume her exorcist activities, although the incident left her with severe scars all over her body. Yuki Tsukumo also noted that what kept him alive was the toughness of his body.
Afterwards, in exchange for Mai's life, Maki's body, now devoid of occult energy, was hard as steel. Even after losing a lot of blood during her fight with her father, in addition to the repetitive fights that followed, Maki showed that she could still fight, showing that she was able to face the most powerful members of the Zenin clan even when weakened. For example, she was able to withstand Jinichi's multiple attacks while being restricted by Ranta's spell and come out alive and victorious.
- Shiranuigata: Although it was not fully executed, it seems that this technique is based on the hardness of Maki's body. We can assume that this technique is a sure way to defend herself since when she tried to use it against Naoya, he dodged it noting that Maki could have taken her maximum speed with it.
Exorcism
No Occult Energy: Maki originally possesses a very low level of occult energy compared to the average non-exorcist. She could not see the plagues without occult energy infused glasses and still has to use a cursed object to exorcise them. Upon her death, Mai took with her all the weak occult energy that Maki possessed. This increased Maki's innate oath in the same way as Toji Fushiguro, making her immensely more powerful.
Innate Oath: In compensation for her low occult energy, Maki possesses incredible physical prowess. She was born with extraordinary physical abilities that will eventually become superhuman strength and speed. This is what allows Maki to act as an exorcist even though she doesn't have enough occult energy to truly be considered one. This was further enhanced after Maki lost what little occult energy she had, greatly increasing her physical prowess.
Equipment
Spears: Maki has various types of spears. The most notable are naginata like the one she used in her first year. This spear was a cursed red object with golden tips and pink cloth. During the tournament against the Kyoto twin school, Maki used another cursed item in the shape of a naginata but with a furry decorated blade between the handle and the spear blade and gold rings on the opposite end. It is also worth noting that the handle of Maki's spears are not cursed objects, just ordinary pieces of wood. Only the blades that make them up are cursed.
Glasses: Maki's low occult energy makes her unable to see the plagues. Her glasses are actually cursed objects that give her the ability to see plagues. She didn't particularly like her first pair and they were broken in her fight against Suguru Geto. She later opted for a more rectangular version but they were destroyed again during her fight against Jogo in the Shibuya Drama. The current pair that Maki owns is similar to the first pair she owned.
Staff : For training, Maki uses a long wooden staff to practice her throwing skills.
Hidden Kunai: Maki had kunai hidden under her skirt and attached to her leg during the inter-school tournament. This allowed her to momentarily throw Kasumi off balance by throwing her hidden weapons at him.
Swords: Maki has an array of weapons that are hidden in Megumi's shadow. Among these weapons is Megumi's black sword that Maki momentarily wielded during their fight against Hanami. Maki actually disarmed Kasumi, took her katana and used it during the rest of the tournament. She broke the blade during her fight with Hanami. During the massacre of the Zenin clan, Maki wore a new sword that was her sister's last creation before she died.
Floating Cloud: This is a cursed S-class item that takes the form of a stick divided into three sections and enhances the user's physical strength with occult energy. Maki recovered it shortly after Suguru Geto's defeat, and the weapon is stored at the exorcism school.
Dragon Bone: This sword is the best cursed item Juzo Kumiya has ever created in his workshop. It has the ability to accumulate strength and occult energy and then release it through the flat of the blade at the will of the user.
