Hinata

Teach is a former member of the second division of Whitebeard's Crew, which was led by Portgas D. Ace. He killed Thatch, Commander of the fourth division, to take over the Yami Yami no Mi. He temporarily became one of the 7 Great Corsairs by defeating Ace and handing him over to the Navy, but he decided to give up his title after he and his crew killed Whitebeard during the siege of Marine Ford.

He is one of the main antagonists of One Piece and the only person known to have absorbed two different Demon Fruits. He is the second antagonist of the Jaya arc after Bellamy. He is the third antagonist of the Impel Down arc after Magellan and Hannyabal. He is the third antagonist of the Marine Ford Arc just after Sengoku and Sakazuki.

Apparence

Blackbeard is a man of about forty years old with a rather strong body, some broken or lost teeth although sometimes he has a complete set; a pronounced nose through, a large chest, a hairy torso as well as a physical strength able to break cervicals without difficulty.

Blackbeard is also very tall for a human being as he is 3.44 m tall.

After the ellipse, Jesus Burgess communicates with him via snail phone at the Coliseum Corrida. The appearance of the beard on Marshall's custom snail phone may suggest that his beard has changed in appearance since Marine Ford.

Personality

Blackbeard will do anything to get something for himself since he killed Thatch and Edward Newgate for their respective powers, the Yami Yami no Mi and the Gura Gura no Mi). He has a very strong ambition and will, not hesitating to antagonize a Pirate Emperor if it allows him to achieve his goals. He has a strong sense of contrariness, and appears to be the opposite of Luffy. For example, in Jaya, he says that a drink is bad and cherry pies are great, while Luffy thinks the opposite. He also believes strongly in the destiny of individuals, thinking that one cannot change what is already planned for him.

He is a very confident man who never gives up. We know little about Blackbeard's relationship with women, but it seems that he is attracted to distinguished women. Indeed, he tells Jewelry Bonney that she is too weak to be part of his crew but that he is willing to take her if she becomes his wife. This last one insults him and gives him a blow of latte, and at this moment he retorts. He is also very calculating, one has the impression that he is always several steps ahead of his opponents. Nevertheless, he seems to be quite cautious, as when he refuses to fight Shanks and his crew or when he runs away when he sees Admiral Akainu coming towards them. He also considers that the dreams of men have no end, just like Luffy and Roger.

Relations

Crew

In Blackbeard's crew there is Van Auger, known as "Supersonic". He is an extremely accurate marksman. He can shoot birds over the Vogue Merry from land when the shore is not even in sight.

Then comes Jesus Burgess, known as "Champion". He is a wrestling champion. He is the Commander of his first fleet.

Doc Q, known as "The Grim Reaper", is of sickly composition, and often falls off his horse, which is itself of sickly composition. If someone helps him, he pretends to get a reward and gives explosive apples to his savior. Some of them, however, seem to be unloaded, and Luffy has fallen on one of those. Like his captain, he seems to believe in fate.

Finally, Laffitte appears at Navy HQ to propose Blackbeard as Grand Corsair. He has eaten a Demon Fruit that allows him to fly and hypnotize people.

During the Impel Down arc, several other characters join the crew, such as Shiliew, former head of Impel Down, Catarina Devon, Vasco Shot, Sanjuan Wolf or Avalo Pizarro.

According to Belo Betty, Blackbeard does not care about the fate of his subordinates, at least for the moment the crews that are under his "protection" like the Pinkbeard Crew.

Enemies

Doflamingo and the New Age

He does not share the ideals of these pirates. He calls what they say a bunch of bullshit.

Marshall D Teach (Barbe Noir)

The Great Corsairs

He doesn't seem to have made any new friends in this group, in fact he has eliminated several. Except for Hancock, the others are his enemies.

Luffy and his crew

Luffy becomes his enemy from Impel Down when he knows that he delivered Ace to the Navy. The crew surely is, because he wanted to deliver their captain to the Navy.

Sabo

Sabo thwarted his plan to make Burgess eat Ace's Mera Mera no Mi, plus Sabo will do anything to protect his little brother Luffy and he resents him for turning his brother Ace over to the Navy.

The World Government and the Navy

They hope that the other Emperors will be able to stop him as the five Elders say that they are the only ones who can defeat him now. They are furious with him because he has taken advantage of his status as a Grand Corsair to infiltrate Impel Down in order to recruit prisoners for his crew. There is also the fact that he caused instability in the world by provoking the Marine Ford War and trying to destroy this island after taking over from Whitebeard.

The Emperors

Shanks the Red doesn't like him and was the first to distrust him. It seems that they crossed swords and Blackbeard left him with the visible scar on his left eye.

Skills and Competencies

Blackbeard is a powerful man even before he has his Demon Fruit abilities. Indeed, he managed to wound Shanks, one of the Four Emperors, leaving him with three gashes on his face over his left eye. He also has great physical strength, as he held his own after taking several close range attacks from a Logia like Ace. Blackbeard considers himself "The most powerful man on Earth" after obtaining the power of Gura Gura no Mi.

Yami Yami no Mi

He ate the Yami Yami no Mi, a Logia type Demon Fruit. This fruit allows to become, master the darkness and absorb everything the user wants. It is a very powerful fruit that can cancel the power of another Demon Fruit, a bit like the Sea Granite. It can attract any Demon Fruit owner with a vortex, which allows it to hit them even if the enemy fruit is of Logia type. So it is understandable why Shanks, one of the Four Emperors, came to Whitebeard to tell him that Ace should not go looking for Blackbeard.

However, unlike the other Logia Demon Fruits, which allow their users not to be damaged by a physical attack, this fruit does not allow Blackbeard to escape these attacks and the pain they cause. However, the darkness eventually absorbs the attack and thus cancels the damage and the pain also eventually passes but seems particularly intense. According to Blackbeard himself, it is intensified because it is absorbed by the power of the fruit. According to Blackbeard, this is the most powerful Demon Fruit that exists.

Marshall D Teach (Barbe Noir)

Gura Gura no Mi

After the events at Impel Down, Blackbeard goes to Marine Ford and finishes off the already severely wounded Whitebeard. After killing Whitebeard, he hides himself and Whitebeard's body under a sheet. He emerges with the power of shaking, making him the holder of two Demon Fruit powers, a fact that was described as impossible. How he managed to steal it is still unknown, we also don't know how Teach can handle these two powers. According to Marco, this is due to a particular and abnormal structure of his body.

He also seems to have a mental and physical resistance out of the ordinary as against his enemies Ace and Whitebeard because he gets up after having taken terrible blows whereas his fruit does not allow him to be insensitive to pain.

His physical strength is also very important and he is quite capable of fighting with his bare hands. He proves it for the first time by crushing Sarquiss effortlessly on Jaya. Later on on Banaro, he still shows his strength by putting several blows to Ace, made tangible thanks to the power of Yami Yami no Mi. Ace himself admits that he "almost broke his neck". Finally he knocked out Hannyabal, the second from Impel Down, without using his power. It is worth noting that the latter was already down, but although wounded, he showed an incredible will not to fall under Luffy's blows. Blackbeard had no trouble finishing him off with a vertical blow to the head similar to the one he had dealt to Sarquiss.

Haki

Marshall D. Teach has mastered the Weapon Haki and the Observation Haki.

Weapons

He owns a gun but does not use it systematically in combat. He used it to kill Whitebeard with the members of his crew.

History

Past

Blackbeard's childhood was probably a sad one. Before he met Whitebeard, Teach lived as an orphan. Twenty-eight years ago at the age of 12, he met Whitebeard and his crew and asked to join them, a request that Whitebeard granted.

Teach killed Satch, the Captain of the Fourth Division, simply because Satch had found the Demon Fruit he had been seeking for years. The only way Teach could get it was to take it by force.

Arc Jaya

When Luffy meets him in Jaya, he looks more like a philosophical pirate. Indeed, he congratulates Luffy and Zoro for not having fought against Bellamy and for having taken the blows without flinching. Then he launches into a tirade on the fact that a man must never forget his dreams because it is the dreams that give the pirate the will to always go further. He's a difficult pirate to figure out. In any case, he is a sailor who seems to have already sailed around the world. He even encourages Luffy to visit the Celestial Islands.

We will quickly see that his views are very close to those of Luffy, and even to those of Gol D. Roger. Despite all his sympathy towards Luffy, he will try to capture him to pocket the 160 million offered for his capture and that of Zoro. They won't have time to fight because the Straw Hat Crew will be expelled by the Knock-Up Stream to the Celestial Islands. Although frustrated at not being able to confront them, Blackbeard will be surprisingly amused and impressed by the courage of his opponents and will even wish them good luck.

Arc Post-Enies Lobby

After killing Satch and taking the fruit, he leaves Whitebeard's crew. According to Whitebeard's rules, killing a member of his crew is the highest crime a pirate can commit. Ace, Blackbeard's former commander, leaves to avenge Satch's death.

Afterwards, Shanks advises Whitebeard to bring Ace back and abandon the idea of revenge, explaining that Ace is not yet ready to fight him, knowing that the fruit Blackbeard stole is very powerful and that Ace will not be able to beat Blackbeard. Nevertheless, this duel could not be avoided.

When Ace finally catches up with Blackbeard, he learns why he killed Satch and why he fled the crew.

Ace will then fight Blackbeard on the island of Banaro. It is there that he will realize the incredible power of Yami Yami no Mi. Nevertheless, one of Blackbeard's crew members will point out that despite this unexpected power, Ace knows how to fight and is not the Commander of the second fleet of Whitebeard for nothing.

Marshall D Teach (Barbe Noir)

After fighting as hard as he could, Ace would be defeated, and that would change the future of the world forever. Indeed, Blackbeard turned him over to the Navy to take Crocodile's vacant position as Grand Corsair, which he coveted. This event will result in a war between the World Government and Whitebeard. An event that our pirate was going to take advantage of to carry out the next part of his plan to conquer the supreme title.

Impel Down Arc

Blackbeard will go to the great prison of Impel Down just after Ace's transfer.

Blackbeard implemented this step during the battle of Marine Ford by sneaking away from the Navy and stealing a ship to use the Circular Current.

It was during the attack on Impel Down that he crossed paths with Luffy for the second time and the latter discovered who he really was. Luffy had just enough time to punch him in the stomach, before being interrupted by their mutual goal. As Luffy made his way back up to the exit to Marine Ford, Blackbeard was caught off guard by the power of Director Magellan who was chasing Luffy. Magellan was at this point enraged. Blackbeard, not having taken the man's power seriously, was sprayed with an extremely potent and fast poison.

They owed their survival only to former Director Shiliew, who was invited to join them, which he readily accepted. After barely surviving, the crew finally made it to Level 6. Blackbeard then offered a surprising deal to those who wanted to join. The deal was that the prisoners in the four cages on Level 6 would fight each other and kill each other until there was one survivor per cage, whom Blackbeard would free and return to his crew. A huge massacre ensued, and then he recruited the four powerful prisoners from Impel Down who had won his contest. This recruitment was the second part of his plan.

However, when he saw one of the winners of his "game", Douglas Bullet, he said he didn't want someone like him in his crew.

Arc Marine Ford

Then, back at the Battle of Marine Ford, he waited "behind the scenes" for the third step of his plan. He and his men were discovered, however, and Teach had to face the wrath of Whitebeard.

Completely panicked by his former captain, who was enraged by the death of Ace, whom Blackbeard had turned over to the Navy, and overconfident in his fruit, Blackbeard defended himself poorly and received heavy wounds from Whitebeard. However, the old man had already suffered many wounds, and when Teach began to find himself in a very delicate position, he ordered his men to finish him off.

Thus they executed Whitebeard, who told the world before he died that he believed in the will of the G-d and that Gol D. Roger had told him in person that the One Piece did exist. With Whitebeard, the strongest man in the world who dominated the era before the battle of Marine Ford, dead, Blackbeard would declare the beginning of his era.

Marshall D Teach (Barbe Noir)

Having surrendered his title of Corsair, Blackbeard gave the world a little show to mark the beginning of his era. His companions covered Whitebeard's body with a black sheet and Blackbeard entered the tent thus erected. When he emerged, he pulverized buildings with the power of Gura Gura no Mi, the power of Whitebeard.

A battle ensued between Sengoku, Admiral Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Garp, Hero and Vice Admiral of the Navy against Blackbeard, armed with two Demon Fruits. They wanted to prevent Blackbeard from destroying Marine Ford. This fight was interrupted at the same time as the Marine Ford battle by Red Shanks, who came in and saved Kobby from a deadly blow from Akainu. Shanks told everyone to stop fighting, as Ace and Whitebeard were dead, so there was no reason for Marines and Pirates to fight anymore.

While Shanks said that if there were still people willing to fight, he would gladly put them back, he asked Teach, who has been his rival since their fight, if he wanted to stay and fight. This one refused, announcing the beginning of his era, that he had got what he wanted here and that the time of their confrontation had not yet come. That's how the battle ended.

Post-Marine Ford Arc

After the battle of Marine Ford, Teach appears on an island in the New World, reduced to fire and ash. He captures Jewelry Bonney with the intention of turning her over to the Navy in exchange for a ship. However, the arrival of Akainu thwarted his plans and forced him to leave the island, abandoning his capture.

During the ellipse

One year after the Battle of Marine Ford, Blackbeard and his crew faced the surviving members of Whitebeard's Crew, led by Marco, in what is known as "The War of Vengeance. Unfortunately, Marco and his crew suffered a crushing defeat. As a result of this event, the Whitebeard captains all disappeared, and Teach began to be recognized as one of the 4 Yonkos.

Arc Île des Hommes-Poissons

Jinbe tells us that Blackbeard is now one of the Four Emperors. Blackbeard was well aware of the territories belonging to his former captain, Edward Newgate, and was able to easily take them over with the help of his two Demon Fruits. He is currently looking for Demon Fruit users to absorb their abilities.

Teach is on a hunt for Demon Fruit owners, killing them and stealing their power. Jinbe advised Luffy to be careful because Teach is after Luffy's fruit.

Arc Dressrosa

Teach sent Jesus Burgess to the Corrida Coliseum to take on Mera Mera no Mi. Burgess easily won the first battle in Block A, and is now one of the four finalists still in the running. Teach talks with Burgess, the Commander of the 1st Fleet. During their conversation, they mention the names of Shiliew, the former Chief Warden of Impel Down, and Aokiji, who apparently want to join their crew. However, Burgess states that he does not trust the former Navy Admiral. As they continue to talk, Luffy walks past Jesus Burgess and listens to the conversation. Burgess interrupts his captain and points out the presence of the "Straw Hat". Teach is then surprised to learn this but seems delighted.

He deduces that he is participating in the tournament in order to win the Mera Mera no Mi but declares that Burgess will bring him the fruit of his dead brother, Portgas D. Ace. Thus, he will consider that Ace has somehow joined his crew. However, Luffy retorts by saying that he will not let them take his brother's power. Following this statement, Burgess and his captain just laugh.

Arc Zo

Pedro learned that Blackbeard and his crew had completely destroyed Baltigo, the Revolutionary headquarters. Once the Navy and the Cipher Pol discovered the location of the island, they quickly moved in. Blackbeard and his men engaged the Cipher Pol in battle, but eventually fled.

Reverie Bow

After the events of Totto Land Archipelago, Blackbeard appears in the shadows accompanied by five people. He reads the newspaper, laughs and thinks it's far too early for Monkey D. Luffy to claim the title of Emperor.

Wano Kuni Arch

Blackbeard invites Moria to party and join his crew as he talks about Lev Ely and the fact that the final battle for the king's seat has begun. After Lev Ely, Teach ordered his crew to set sail as he planned to acquire something before he could be taken by the Navy.

Trivia

  • Blackbeard reminds in some way in the Yu-Gi-Oh manga Yami Bakura the evil spirit of the millennium ring that took possession of Ryo Bakura several times. Both create instability in their respective works (Shadi, the guardian of the objects speaks about it at the end of the duel against Pegasus). Blackbeard is very interested in the demon fruits as Bakura is in the seven objects of the millennium. Each of them has a quest, that of collecting powerful ancient objects. They are also thieves (The fruit of Absalom & Satch for Blackbeard and Bakura was the King of Thieves in ancient Egypt. We can also see personality changes in each of them.
  • Blackbeard's name is of course inspired by the real Blackbeard, in fact these two men share the same surname: Teach. The real Blackbeard was called Edward Teach while the one in the manga is called Marshall Teach.
    • The "real Blackbeard" had as his name: "Edward Teach" but also "Thatch", which is a literal translation of which gives Satch, the Commander that Marshall D. Teach killed.
    • Teach's first appearance after the ellipsis was in Chapter 925, which was published the week commemorating 300 years since the death of the real Blackbeard.
  • Blackbeard is the only known character with two Demon Fruit powers and the first to have used a Demon Fruit that belonged to another person.
  • He is the only known Emperor to be part of the Worst Generation and to have been a Corsair Captain.
  • He was the only Corsair Captain to join the group without a bonus and without being known to either the Navy or the World Government.
  • He is the second Emperor to have seen Luffy after Shanks and before Edward Newgate; and is the second to have a contact with Luffy after the two-year ellipse, the first Emperor being Charlotte Linlin.
  • He is the only Emperor to have engaged Luffy in combat before the ellipse (at Impel Down, Blackbeard was only a Corsair at the time), until the Whole Cake Island arc where Luffy engaged Big Mom in combat and then in the Land of Wa against Kaido.
  • If Teach lived in the real world, he would be Somali.
  • If he hadn't been a pirate, he would have become an archaeologist.
  • In the 6th Popularity Poll, Teach ranked 49th.
  • Teach's favorite foods are cherry pie and Kebab.
  • In an SBS, Oda associated a flower and an animal with each member of the terrible generation. Blackbeard was associated with the red lycoris and the hippopotamus.
  • The original name of Blackbeard may come from the English pirate Henry Every of the seventeenth century, famous for becoming the richest pirate in the world at the time and getting the highest bounty in history placed on his head.
  • Blackbeard is Eichiro Oda's favorite historical character.
  • We learn that Blackbeard is an insomniac (from the correct term Agrypnia), Baggy tells Shanks that he has not slept since he was born. He recalls the story of Thai Ngoc, a Vietnamese insomniac who has not slept for 46 years.
  • Teach's concepts show him with a typical pirate eye patch before the idea was abandoned.
  • He doesn't like the sauce.
  • Teach's hobbies are gaming and historical research.
