Apparence
Mayuri Kurotsuchi has a unique and relatively scary appearance. Indeed, as the director of the Research and Development Center and successor of Kisuke Uruhara in this position, he is a relentless scientist and all the time busy with his work. He pushed his knowledge and his technological discoveries to a very advanced point, modifying his body accordingly: he can pull out of his ear a rope prolonged by a kusarigama (a small scythe used as a weapon in the past by the ninjas/shinobis), he can prolong his arm (divided in several fragments linked by elastic cables), he can liquefy himself in contact with the blade of his saber, etc...
He looks a bit like a white puppet with a black make-up on his face, bright blue hair (hair that is not easily seen in the first part of the manga) and yellow eyes, dressed with a classic black kimono of Shinigami, the White Haori of Captain and a kind of purple cushion surrounding his cervicals. His face is girded by a binding with 3 golden cones: 2 on his ears and 1 on his chin. He also has a long nail of about 10 cm on the middle finger of his right hand (all his nails are blue). However, this is only his mask. In a certain episode, after having liquefied, he re-solidifies and we see his real face in episode 61. He has blue hair and a small goatee on his chin. Only his yellow and cruel eyes are recognizable as his face has changed so much.
Note that Mayuri's appearance changes practically during all the arcs of the manga, he is the character whose appearance changes the most and the most often.
In the arc of Hueco Mundo, Mayuri's make-up and hat change. His hat is replaced by a mane of blue hair, giving him the appearance of a lion. As in the Soul Society arc, her ears are covered by golden cones, which meet at the chin to form a metallic goatee reminiscent of the one worn by the pharaohs. The pattern of her makeup changes, giving way to a black T that covers everything but her cheeks, chin and a thin strip from her forehead to her nose, which are white.
Personality
Mayuri Kurotsuchi is a particularly cold and cruel Shinigami, seeing every being as a subject of scientific study more or less worthy of interest. However, he appears to be really passionate about his research, which translates into an unconcealed enthusiasm when he finds a new subject of study or a situation where he can test the fruits of his research. He doesn't hesitate to sacrifice his subordinates, and particularly mistreats his Vice-captain and "daughter" Nemu Kurotsuchi, whom he created himself and whose mistake he can't stand (because it means that he failed in his creation). Mayuri also has a very eccentric personality, which brings him closer to his former superior Kisuke Urahara; he also seems quite perverse considering the way he reanimates Nemu after she has been drained of all her spiritual energy by Szayel Aporro in order to accomplish her rebirth.
History
We discover for the first time in the manga the character of Mayuri during the invasion of the Soul Society by the Ryokas who came to deliver Rukia before his execution. He tried to get in touch with the Ryokas to study their abilities. He managed to meet Uryu Isshida and Orihime Inoue and tried to capture them by blowing up some members of his division in an ambush. Orihime escaped through a Shinigami of the 11th Division threatened by Uryu, who stayed behind to confront Mayuri. During the fight, we learn that he is the Captain of the 12th Division, that his Vice-captain is his "daughter" Nemu, that he has already studied Quincy before and thus killed the grandfather of Uryu, Soken Ishida. We also discover his potential in combat, his Shikai and his Bankai. But despite all efforts, Uryu manages to pierce Mayuri and his Bankai thanks to the breaking of his Quincy glove, the Sanrei Glove, forcing Kurotsuchi to retreat by liquefying himself through his sword. Later on, as the Ryokas progressed through the Sereitei, we see him from behind taking a shower and in his true form. We can clearly see that he has blue hair and normal skin color, as well as the marks of the fixation he wears on his chin. In this scene, he is alerted by the Vice-captain of the 4th Division, Isane Kotetsu, who informs him about the betrayal of Sosuke Aizen and the disruptive clashes between Captains. Mayuri refuses to get involved saying that he was not interested because there was no profit to be made from these confrontations.
Overview
Arc de la Soul Society
We see him for the first time in Soul Society, during the invasion of Soul Society (place where purified souls are destined to reside) by the Ryokas (intruding earthly souls) who came to deliver Rukia Kuchiki before his execution. He then tried to get in touch with the Ryokas to study their abilities. He managed to meet Uryu Isshida and Orihime Inoue and tried to capture them by blowing up some members of his division in an ambush.
Orihime escaped through a Shinigami of the 11th Division threatened by Uryu, who stayed behind to confront Mayuri. During the fight, we learn that he is the Captain of the 12th Division, that his Vice-captain is his "daughter" Nemu, that he has already studied Quincy before and thus killed Uryu's grandfather, Soken Ishida. We also discover his fighting potential, his Shikai and his Bankai (which is the first Bankai we see in the manga). But despite all his efforts, Uryu manages to pierce Mayuri and his Bankai thanks to the breaking of his Quincy glove, the Sanrei Glove, forcing Kurotsuchi to retreat by liquefying himself through his sword. Later, as the Ryokas were progressing in the Sereitei (place of residence of the Shinigamis in the Soul Society), we see him from behind taking a shower and in his true form (his human form). We can then clearly see that he has blue hair and skin of normal color, as well as the marks of the fixation that he wears on his chin. In this scene, he is alerted by the Vice-captain of the 4th Division (in charge of the Care and Supply), Isane Kotetsu, who informs him about the betrayal of Sosuke Aizen (Captain of the 5th Division) and the disruptive confrontations between Captains. Mayuri refuses to get involved, saying that she was not interested because there was no profit to be made from these confrontations.
Arc des Bounts (off-series)
We then see Captain Kurotsuchi again when Captain Shunsui Kyoraku is looking for information at the Research and Development Center about the Bounts (beings that feed on human souls and fight with "puppets") that are making news in Karakura (hometown of Ichigo Kurosaki, hero of the story). Mayuri refuses him access to information about the Bounts, and later realizes that the data about them has been erased (by Ichinose Maki, a former member of the 11th Division who is now working for the Bounts). He decides to tell the story of the Bounts to the other Captains during an emergency meeting. He describes a fight between Quincy and Bounts, which Quincy wins. Following this fight, the surviving Bounts decided to eat human souls to develop their powers to the maximum. Desperate to study a Bount precisely after discovering their origins, Mayuri asked Nemu to take a spare Quincy artifact to the Development Research Center in Uryu to temporarily restore his powers and convince him to help the Bounts join the Soul Society. Mayuri is not seen again until the Bounts invade the Soul Society, where he tries to capture the Bount Sawatari alive to study him.
The old Sawatari fights with his puppet Baura, a kind of rocky whale-fish which can travel in several dimensions and annihilate all that it swallows because its mouth is a kind of black hole. In the fight, Mayuri loses his left arm, which he regenerates thanks to a healing serum he had on him. He manages to hit Sawatari with Ashisogi Jizo (even if Mayuri loses an arm once again), who flees with Baura in another dimension to reappear later in another place of the Soul Society. And to her surprise, Mayuri arrived very quickly where Sawatari reappeared because he had made a machine to locate the Bounts. Through the Shinigami absorbed by Baura, Sawatari attacked Mayuri with the powers of the Shinigami, forcing Mayuri to kill him with her Bankai.
Arch of the Hueco Mundo
He appears when Ichigo and his friends go to rescue Inoue in the Hueco Mundo (the world of the Hollows), taken hostage by Aizen, the traitor of the Soul Society. Mayuri, accompanied by Nemu as always, helps Uryu Ishida and Renji Abarai, defeated by Arrancar n°8, Szayel-Aporro Grantz. This Arrancar uses techniques similar to the Voodoo, and kills Mayuri in this way...
At least, that's what he thought, Mayuri was acting and making fun of him: he had replaced his organs by fake ones before coming and had observed the whole fight with Uryu thanks to bacteria that he had put in his body in order to collect useful information. The Arrancar then took Nemu as a hostage, which was useless because he was eaten by the Bankai of Mayuri. However, Szayel-Aporro was not dead, he resurrected in Nemu's body thanks to his Zanpakuto, but was affected by the poison contained in his body at the same time. He took control of Mayuri's Bankai to kill him, but the Bankai self-destructed because Mayuri had programmed it to do so in case of turning against his master. One of the poisons contained in Nemu was the superman potion, which slows down the perception of space and time thousands of times for the one who ingests it, thus slowing down Szayel-Aporro and allowing Mayuri to kill him. Mayuri told him his point of view on the notion of perfection (because the Arrancar claimed to be perfect). In his reasoning, perfection must not be achieved, on pain of monotony and despair. Mayuri then pushes his Zanpakuto into the heart of the Arrancar, and breaks it to punish him for having turned against him. Then he gives life again to Nemu in a very strange way, we don't really know how he does it, we just see him from the back doing suggestive movements... After that, he finds the room where Szayel-Aporro stored his subjects of experiments and one perceives there bodies hung.
He will then allow Ichigo to return to Karakura by opening a Garganta. He will then wait for the death of Espada Cero Yammy, in the middle of the fight against captains Byakuya and Kenpachi, to do the autopsy.however, at the time of the "Turn Back Pendulum" (flash back before the Winter War between Shinigamis and Arrancars begins), we see Mayuri again, younger. He was a prisoner in a place of the Soul Society Special Forces called the "Maggot's Nest" (of which Kisuke Urahara was the chief before his promotion to captain of the 12th division, when he was 3rd seat of the 2nd division). In this prison were kept Shinigami and souls who were considered dangerous for the maintenance of peace in the Soul Society, but who had not committed any crime yet. He was the only prisoner to be locked up in a separate room, proof of the danger he represented. It was Urahara Kisuke, at that time just promoted to Captain of the 12th Division, who freed him by making him an attractive offer in these terms: he asked for his help to build a new organization in the Seireitei: the Technical Development Office. In exchange Mayuri would get out of prison and work in this laboratory as deputy director, and 3rd seat of the 12th... unless Kisuke disappeared, in which case having been rehabilitated, the Center and the 12th Division would return to him... which indeed happened, Urahara Kisuke was forced to go into exile because he was accused of having created the Hôgyoku and wrongly of being responsible for the hollowmorphosis experiments made by Aizen.
When Byakuya Kuchiki told Ichigo Kurosaki to go back to Karakura city, Ichigo complained that he couldn't go back so easily by himself and that Kisuke Urahara wasn't there to open the Garganta. Mayuri then suddenly appears behind the group with Nemu pushing a loaded cart behind him and complains that Ichigo is constantly obsessed with Urahara. He then notes how Ichigo did not use any honorific title to address him, but reflects that he was better than Byakuya and Kenpachi, whom Ichigo would only address using their first names.
Byakuya notices his unusually forgiving mood and asks if it has anything to do with the cart behind him. Mayuri confirms this and tells him that he is in a good mood because not only did he find "spoils of war" but in the same place he was also able to analyze the structure of the Garganta. When Ichigo questions his statement, Mayuri starts to complain about what he has learned and orders Nemu to prepare to send the replacement Shinigami to the human world. When Ichigo complains more, Mayuri explains to Ichigo that this process was an experiment and that Ichigo is the "number one test subject" and therefore, he has no right to refuse or accept.
Retsu Unohana arrives and says that she will take Ichigo home. Mayuri is surprised that she also offers to be a test subject, but she smiles and says that she trusts him and believes that the experiment will be a success. On top of that, if Mayuri failed to make a Garganta, even after analyzing the information found in Hueco Mundo, then Urahara would laugh at him. Mayuri reminds him that he could close the Garganta during the transfer, which she simply acknowledges as true. Unohana only says that she expects no less. He then opens the Garganta to let Ichigo and Unohana through. Before Ichigo leaves with Unohana, Ichigo tells Mayuri how similar he is to Kisuke, which makes him angry. After Ichigo leaves, Mayuri thinks about how fascinating Ichigo is and how he will formulate a plan to torment Ichigo. Byakuya then asks Mayuri why he didn't go to the Human World too. Mayuri simply replies that there are many more interesting specimens in the Hueco Mundo and will simply use the Garganta after the war to further study the living world. Byakuya then suggests that Mayuri has confidence in Ichigo's abilities to end the war.
Mayuri oversees the checking of the pillars to determine if they are all free of anomalies. Once the check is complete, he initiates the activation of the world-changing bond posts. He is interrupted by one of his subordinates who tells him that he has to wait because there are Shinigami in the city and a material world transfer without the help of a senkai gate is dangerous. Mayuri decides that he will give them time and count to ten while his subordinate calls all the Shinigami to leave the city before they are killed. Later, Mayuri starts to make regular searches in Hueco Mundo.
The Shinigami arc of the lost substitute
Mayuri was one of two captains who did not attend the meeting at the first division barracks.
The arc of the bloody thousand-year war
Mayuri is seen at the SRDI, while he is in an emergency situation. It seems that more and more Hollows are disappearing and Kurotsuchi knows who the culprit is. Akon asks Mayuri if it is the group he is thinking of and Mayuri confirms that only "them" can do it. Later, Mayuri and Akon attend the captain's meeting, where they explain Vandenreich's infiltration of the Soul Society and confirm that they are Quincy . Before he can finish his explanation, he is interrupted by Yamamoto, asking him the location of the enemies' headquarters. When Mayuri says that they still don't know, Yamamoto asks all the captains to prepare for battle. Mayuri confirms that he ordered his division to kill 28,000 Rukongai citizens to correct the balance of souls. Yamamoto asks why he did not get permission, noting that given the gravity of the situation, he would have gotten it. Mayuri replies that he should have taken responsibility if things got worse. Yamamoto states that the situation would not have been so serious if IRDI had reported the problem earlier. This prompts Mayuri to remind Yamamoto that he had rejected Mayuri's warning when Uryū Ishida entered the Soul Society and states that the captain-commander is responsible for the current events because he failed to kill "that man" a thousand years ago.
After the Vandenreich invaded the Seireitei, an angry Mayuri receives a note from Rangiku Matsumoto that the enemy has the ability to steal Bankai. He curses his fellow captains for not waiting to complete his analysis.
Mayuri is then informed via transmitting swords with the other captains and lieutenants by Rin Tsubokura that Ichigo is currently heading to Soul Society, and comments that Akon must have acted on his own again. Some time later, he and several other members of Gotei 13 are surprised to feel Yamamoto's reiatsu echoing throughout the Seireitei as their captain-commander enters the front line. Mayuri and other members of Gotei 13 are then surprised to detect Ichigo Kurosaki entering the Soul Society. After the enemies leave the Soul Society, Mayuri asks Ichigo to meet with him about his Zanpakutō, Zangetsu. As the captain explains to the Shinigami surrogate that it is usually impossible for a Bankai to be restored once broken, he explains that he did not repair his own Zanpakutō but reshaped it. After calming Kon , he learns that the Zero Division has arrived and brings Ichigo to witness their arrival. When Senjumaru Shutara later brings a number of orbs to the Tenchūren of the royal guard , Mayuri notices Tensa Zangetsu in one of them. He asks Senjumaru if she broke into his laboratory, but she states that she simply placed her hand on the door and it opened, noting that the lock was easy to open. Kon then appears, acting as a spotlight for a communication system set up by Urahara to talk to Ichigo from Hueco Mundo. Both annoyed to see Urahara and intrigued by how the former captain modified Kon, he grabs the Soul Mod, applying a lot of pressure on his eyes, which Urahara notes he found the switches, but he already turned them off.
Mayuri will fight against Hitsugaya, he will win and will take control of Kensei and Rose zombified. In the last part he will fight Pernida, an elite quincy. During this fight, Mayuri will take out some gadgets and will show us a great speed and a new Bankai that he will have modified himself, having a huge power. He wins with two broken legs but he will manage to heal himself.
Skills and Competencies
Immense spiritual pressure : Although he is not the most powerful of the captains, Kurotsuchi has nevertheless an enormous spiritual force. According to Uryu it comes in waves.
Shunpô : His shunpô is not comparable to Shunsui's but he is fast enough to avoid two consecutive attacks of Uryû who was equipped with Sanrei-Shutô which gave him more power and speed. However, he could not do it anymore when Uryu removed his glove. He was also able to pass behind the 8th espada without registering his movement.
Stamina: Mayuri showed a very high resistance to pain, like when he lost his arm and didn't cry out in pain. During the fight against Uryu, he was almost cut in two and got out alive.
Intelligence : He has a great intelligence and is able to adapt to a lot of situations.
Gadgets: Small bomb - attack detector in his sword - hyrenkyaku shoe - new poison used against Hitsugaya in the last arc - can also control zombified people like with captain Kensei and Rose
Laser beams; After the time jump, Mayuri can shoot lasers from her eyes.
Zanpaku-tō
Ashisogi Jizō (疋 殺 地 蔵, 'Ksitigarbha's Killing Head' ? ) Article dedicated to the spirit of this Zanpaku-tō: . Unlike other Zanpaku-tō, Mayuri has her sheath right in the center of her waist, not on the left side, as shinigami swords are usually placed. It has a pink hilt that, from the guard to about a third of the way up, is banded with protruding spikes, which seem to be part of its shikai, as when it is released they become thicker. The guard becomes beige in an oval shape with the side of the edge longer and bent up; also banded (only the bent part).
- Shikai: Order for the initial release is Rends (掻き毟れ, 'kakimushire'? , Out Garra in the Spanish-American version, Hazle pieces in Spain) Article dedicated to the spirit of this Zanpaku-tō: Article dedicated to the spirit of this Zanpaku-tō: . Ashisogi Jizō then takes the form of a short, golden, curved, thick trident with a baby-like head near its handle. The wounds caused by his Shikai cut the nerve endings that send signals from his rival's brain to his limbs, unlike a sedative, Ashisogi Jizō's poison does not eliminate the pain in the wounds inflicted, only the movement and although the paralysis. is short-lived, in combat it is a big drawback. Ashisogi Jizō has also shown another ability, which is to turn the body of its wearer into a strange green liquid, which allows him to both recover from heavy damage, and escape without taking damage.
-
Ashisogi Jizō, Kyōdo Yon (疋 殺 地 蔵 四 四 ,, Jizō to cut off legs, Terror Magnitude 4): Mayuri thrusts her finger into one of her Shikai's eyes, causing a dark liquid to flow as Ashisogi Jizō opens his mouth to scream. Anyone who is not Mayuri's blood and hears the scream for 4 seconds will be paralyzed. Unlike Ashisogi Jizō's original ability to stop only the neural impulses of movement, this technique completely paralyzes everything biological.
Bankai: Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō (金色 疋 殺 地 蔵, 'Ksitigarbha Golden Killer Head' ) Article dedicated to the spirit of this Zanpaku-tō: . Mayuri's bankai summons a baby-headed caterpillar with a halo on its head emitting a gaseous poison as well as several blades under its chin. This creature is called Konjiki Ashizogi Jizô (symbol of the lost children in Japan)
One of these powers is to spit a deadly poison (always in gaseous form).
- Poison: Konjiki-Ashisogi Jizô can release a deadly poison that he releases through his mouth over a distance of 180 meters and that only Nemu and Mayuri are immune to. Mayuri has taken the habit of changing the composition of the poison after each use so that her previous opponent cannot develop antibodies
- Retractable blades : Konjiki-Ashisogi Jizô has very long blades of 5 meters at chest level. When he runs at his opponents, he can skewer them clean. Used with his poison, he is particularly deadly so even if the opponents manage to avoid his spikes they cannot escape the poison. If the opponent doesn't get skewered he eats it
-
Self-destruction: Mayuri made sure that if her zanpakuto attacks her, it self-destructs, this ability is highlighted in the arc of the zanpakuto rebellion. According to his own words, a tool that attacks its master is useless.
In the arc Quincy we discover that Mayuri has modified her Bankai and has the ability to adapt to the powers of the enemy, the bankai is called: Mataï fukuin shotaï- and it has changed its appearance, bigger and much more powerful
-
Modified Bankai: Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō: Matai Fukuin Shōtai (金色 疋 殺 地 蔵: 魔 胎 伏 印 症 体, 'Golden Ksitigarbha Killing Head: Demon Belly Covered in Disease' ) to the spirit of this Zanpaku-tō: . At any time, Mayuri can release a modified form of her Bankai. This takes the form of a huge, portly, dark-skinned baby, dressed in a white loincloth with a white cloth covering its pectorals. It has a deformed head with completely white eyes, which is adorned with two balanced branches that support large boxes, and its belly has a large vertical slit in the center with kanji written on each side. The baby is resting on a large pile of thick, veiny umbilical cords with visible veins.
- Modified Bankai special ability: she can create modified versions of Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo with the information and data that Mayuri sends her; this allows her to counter the specific abilities of Mayuri's opponents.
- Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō (Surfce of Nerves): In the fight against Pernida Parnkgjas , Mayuri had her Bankai modified to generate another Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo that had the nerves on the surface of her body, which, although making intense pain, just by coming in contact with the air and ground, it allowed her to effectively resist Pernida the Compulsory, as her nerves were divided into 70,000 layers, each of which falls off if Pernida reaches it instead of damaging it.
Relations
Nemu Kurotsuchi
His own creation. He regards her as a kind of slave and does not seem to have any affection for her. He even refuses to let her help him and save him in a critical situation. In the last act, the fight against Pernida shows the depth of the relationship between Mayuri and Nemu. This is his greatest masterpiece, which continuously surpasses his expectations by surviving, unlike his last attempts to create a Shinigami from scratch.
Retsu Unohana
Mayuri has a tense relationship with Captain Unohana. As she specializes in healing as captain of the 4th division, she is usually the one who takes care of patients poisoned by Ashisogi Jizo's poison, for which she always finds an antidote, although Mayuri makes a point of changing the composition after each use. This tension is visible in the Zanpakutos arc, when Unohana heals several vice-captains poisoned by the materialized form of Ashisogi Jizô before Mayuri's intervention.
Other appearances
Futility
His Japanese double Ryūsei Nakao is also the double of Freezer in the Dragon Ball Z series as well as Caesar in the One Piece series.

(To Szayel Aporro Grantz) "I hate perfection. If something is perfect, then there is nothing better. No room for imagination, nothing that would allow a person to improve their knowledge or abilities. Do you understand what that means? For scientists like us, perfection only brings despair. It is our job to design things that are more wonderful than the others, but never achieve perfection. A scientist must be a person who remains ecstatic while knowing this. Long story short, from the moment that nonsense left your lips to reach my ears, you had already lost. Of course, assuming you are a scientist."
(To Szayel Aporro Grantz) "Arrancars, Arrancars, ARRANCARS ......ESPADA. The Hueco Mondo is truly a treasure chest."
"To utter your first cry of life is already to die."
(About his zanpakuto) Well! The tool that defies its own master. Did he really think he could get away with what he did? It was designed in such a way that if he had the urge to turn against me, then he would instantly enter the self-destruction phase.
(To Uryu Ishida) Ooh, a Quincy. They're getting rarer and rarer. I haven't met a living one in many years. I'm sorry for you, but I've already finished studying your species. I have no interest in you.
