Apparence
Muichiro is a short, fair-skinned young man with long, straight black hair that fades to a pale turquoise as he approaches his waist. He wears his hair loose with two slightly protruding tufts on either side of his head, a slightly shorter set of hair left to frame his face and an unruly fringe on his forehead. He also has large, mint-green, empty-looking eyes. His eyes and hair are features shared with his twin brother, Yuichiro Tokito.
Muichiro wears a dark and slightly turquoise version of the demon slayer uniform. His uniform has longer, looser sleeves that are more reminiscent of a kimono than the standard lapel uniform. At the same time, the lack of fabric bands wrapped around his calves gives his uniform an overall loose and substantial appearance. He will lose his arm and leg to the first upper moon.
Personality
Muichiro is an air-headed individual who seems to be constantly wandering in his thoughts and never focusing on one thing. Impassive and sometimes obtuse, he tends to think only for himself and operates solely on logic, never letting emotion guide him. Despite this, he has been shown to become serious when necessary and is dedicated to his position as a pillar of the mist.
However, prior to the death of his twin brother when the siblings were eleven years old, Muichiro's personality was that of a much more caring individual. Having initially taken after his father, he was shown to exhibit a higher level of kindness and understanding than his demon-killing behavior, believing that he should aim to do good for others if he wanted good done for himself. After his brother was killed by a demon, Muichiro subsequently lost his memory and held a pervasive rage deeply suppressed within him that inevitably led to his future, intense training. After this memory loss, he began to show the indifferent attitude he carries in Hashira.
After his memories came back, Muichiro started to express more emotions and became more confident in himself, helping him to build friendships among demon slayers. He also learned other expressions, such as sarcasm and smugness towards the top rank 5, Gyokko.
History
Past
Muichiro and his older twin brother, Yuichiro, were born to a lumberjack and his wife. When they were ten years old, their mother caught a cold that turned into bronchitis, killing her. Their father, who had gone to get herbs for their mother during a storm, ended up falling off a cliff when she died.
The two orphaned brothers survived together, with Muichiro taking after their father's emotional and kind nature. Unlike him, Yuichiro had a cold and impassive outlook on life.
The following spring, Kagaya Ubuyashiki's wife, Amane Ubuyashiki, arrived to recruit the twins for the Demon Slayers Army. Muichiro's excitement was countered by Yuichiro's unwelcoming and rejecting reception. In an outburst, Yuichiro revealed that he blamed their parents' death on their hardworking and selfless nature, which led to his cold demeanor, hoping that it would keep him and his brother alive.
While Amane continued to visit the twins, Yuichiro chased her away every time. The following summer, when the twins were eleven years old, a demon came to their cabin during the night and attacked, causing Yuichiro to lose his left arm as he tried to protect Muichiro. As the demon harassed them for their uselessness, Muichiro lost himself in a rage and destroyed the demon with all the tools at their disposal and logs of wood.
At sunrise, the demon withered into ashes and Muichiro dragged himself home. There he found Yuichiro near death praying to heaven that his brother would survive. He lay down next to his brother and grabbed his hand as he was dying. Amane and her daughters arrived later to treat a badly wounded Muichiro.
Eventually, Muichiro would lose his memories and leave his old life behind to serve the Demon Slayer Army. Due to his prominent strength and extensive training, he quickly reached the rank of Pillar in just two months. With his memories gone, Muichiro began to take after his older brother's personality and became distant and indifferent. However, he still felt an incredible anger inside him that drove him to hunt the Demons.
During this time in the Demon Slaying Army, he also met Kyojuro Rengoku, who told him that they should do their best as fellow Pillars. In addition, Muichiro met his late blacksmith, Tetsuido, who expressed understanding and empathy for the boy and his difficult circumstances.
Synopsis
Bow Recovery Training
After Tanjiro Kamado was brought to the Pillar meeting for interrogation, Muichiro was present and later introduced as the Pillar of Mist. When asked about Nezuko Kamado's continued life, he retorted that he didn't mind and would forget the circumstance anyway.
When Tanjiro suddenly interrupts Kagaya in the middle of his meeting with the Pillars, Muichiro hits him in the head with a rock and advises him not to interrupt their master, telling him to leave.
Arc Quartier des Plaisirs
As Tengen Uzui fights Gyutaro, Gyutaro compliments him on his supposed natural talent for fighting. Tengen denies this and instead considers Muichiro and Gyomei Himejima as individuals with exceptional fencing skills.
Arch of the blacksmith village
Muichiro appears for the first time in the village of the blacksmiths when we see him arguing with Kotetsu. He tries to convince Kotetsu to give him the key of the Yoriichi Type Zero, slapping him when he refuses to comply. Tanjiro intervenes, grabbing his arm and trying to crush him as he did to Genya Shinazugawa after the final selection. However, to his surprise, Muichiro doesn't budge despite a smaller frame and thinner arms, instead punching Tanjiro in the stomach and berating him for his weakness. He sees the box on his back and grabs it, sensing a demon, but Tanjiro slaps his hand and tells him not to touch it while saving Kotetsu from its grip. Kotetsu continues to refuse to hand over the key even under torture, and Muichiro reprimands him for his speech, stating that he is wasting a Hashira's time and that blacksmiths are only good at making weapons. Tanjiro interrupts, angry at Muichiro's inconsiderate attitude, but he is knocked out by him.
After Tanjiro regains consciousness, he accompanies Kotetsu to watch Muichiro fight the mechanical doll, seeing him break it. Muichiro remarks on the useful training and takes one of the Type Zero swords, asking Tanjiro to get rid of his broken sword. Tanjiro doesn't feel any malice coming from him, but he is still upset by his attitude.
Later in the week, Muichiro pinches Tanjiro to wake him up, asking him where Kozo Kanamori, his new blacksmith, is. When Tanjiro offers to go with Muichiro to find him, Muichiro wonders why he would do so. Tanjiro replies that helping others might end up affecting himself positively, which causes Muichiro to suddenly feel a sense of familiarity and he questions Tanjiro about what he just said. However, before he can do so, Nezuko wakes up and interrupts the flow of their conversation, Muichiro wondering where he had seen her before. Their conversation is suddenly interrupted by the entrance of the fourth highest rank, Hantengu .
Muichiro immediately attacks Hantengu using the fourth form of mist breath. Hantengu dodges and he comments on his speed, attacking him again after Tanjiro and cutting off his head. Tanjiro, remembering the situation with Daki and Gyutaro, yells at Muichiro to keep concentrating as Hantengu splits into two bodies, Sekido and Karaku . Karaku attacks Muichiro and blows him out of the building and into the forest.
As he rushes back to the village, Muichiro sees Kotetsu being attacked by a demon. He considers saving him but suddenly remembers Tanjiro's words and beheads the demon, telling Kotetsu to escape. When Kotetsu thanks him intensely and apologizes for his original hatred towards him, Muichiro's memories stimulate him as he remembers recovering under the care of the Ubuyashiki family.
Kotetsu leads Muichiro to where Kozo is. As Kozo begins to head to the shed to retrieve the new blade, Muichiro pulls him back as he senses the presence of Upper Rank Five, Gyokko. Muichiro attacks him, but Gyokko moves to different pots and avoids his slashes. He summons more fish demons who send a series of needles towards Kozo and Kotetsu, but Muichiro protects them and tells them to move away. Gyokko reveals that the needles are poisonous and reprimands Muichiro, which brings back another sudden memory. He tries to attack Gyokko, but gets trapped in his bloody power: The Water Prison, his attempt to escape using the mist breath, proves unsuccessful. As he thinks of his imminent disappearance, he suddenly hears his father talking about Tanjiro's body. Kotetsu quickly arrives to give him a breath of air and he is able to get out using the breath of mist, second form: eight-layered mist, remembering that it was his father who said the same thing that Tanjiro had said earlier.
After escaping from the water prison, Muichiro's memories of his past all return. The anger over his brother's death manifests itself in his brand of demon hunter, his speed and abilities increasing dramatically as he enters the hangar and attacks Gyokko, who comments on his relaxed face. Gyokko retaliates with his Blood Power, and Muichiro's blade shatters as he tries to cut it, prompting Kozo to quickly hand him his new one. Muichiro slices the demon's attack and thanks Kozo, in which he replies that he only followed the instructions of the late Tetsuido . At the mention of his name, Muichiro remembers his former blacksmith's concern for him and apologizes inwardly, noticing that he is fine now and uses the mist breath, landing a blow on Gyokko's neck.
Muichiro and Gyokko start insulting each other, the latter becoming furious after the former insults his pot. He uses another Blood Power, but Muichiro easily counters it with the Mist Blast, slicing off the demon's molting head as it escapes to a tree. When Gyokko tries to show off his new form, Muichiro's indifferent attitude towards him enrages him again and he attacks, which Muichiro dodges and smiles, commenting on the uselessness of his offense.
Another fight between the two ensues, with Gyokko using his Blood Power and Muichiro responding with his personally developed form of the Mist Breath . When Gyokko tries to find him in a sea of mist, Muichiro effortlessly decapitates him.
In the aftermath of the battle, Muichiro starts foaming at the mouth from the poison and falls unconscious after checking that Kotetsu is alive, his family congratulating him for a job well done in his conscience.
When Tanjiro runs after Hantengu, Muichiro throws Hotaru Haganezuka's unfinished Nichirin sword that is recovered from Type Zero, giving Tanjiro the opportunity to defeat him.
After the battle is over, Tanjiro and Muichiro thank each other, Muichiro for the sword and Tanjiro for helping him recover his memories. Mitsuri Kanroji later pulls them into a group hug.
Pillar training arch
After the events of the battles in the blacksmith village it is mentioned by Goto that Muichiro and Mitsuri slept for two days after the incident and were back at full strength on the third. An emergency pillar meeting is held in Ubuyashiki estate and Muichiro is seen there with his colleague Hashira. When Iguro asks how he and Kanroji are doing, Muichiro says that he has not yet recovered his full strength. Amane Ubuyashiki appears in her husband's place for the meeting, and Muichiro and the others bow respectfully to her.
Amane mentions the presence of marks appearing on both Kanroji and Tokito during their fights with the two higher moons and asks how they got the marks and what conditions they were put in to get them. Both Hashira seem to be surprised by her inquiry, not knowing anything about what she is talking about. Mitsuri first explains her experience in battle with a wide use of silly words and effects that leave Muichiro and the others speechless. After Mitsuri apologizes for being overexcited, Muichiro says he wasn't even aware of any marks. He realizes that thinking back to the previous battle, he had become aware of several things that were different and that if these conditions were met, perhaps everyone could have the same marks.
Muichiro first begins by telling everyone how he could not move poison in his battle with Gyokko, and he used breaths to slow and delay the flow of poison in his bloodstream. He remembered how Kotetsu had almost lost his life trying to save him and that his memories of the past came back to him at that moment. Tokito had become so angry that he had lost total control of his emotions, and he thinks that his heart exceeded 200 bpm and that his body was inhumanly hot. Muichiro states that he thinks his body temperature was over 39 degrees. Shinobu Kocho states that this condition would most certainly be fatal, and Muichiro agrees that this fact is exactly why he thinks it can be used as a screening test. He assumes that the difference between those who have the mark and those who don't is the question or will you die or not die.
Amane asks what Muichiro said about his heart rate and body temperature. Muichiro admits that when Shinobu was treating him, he apparently had a 39 degree fever. He guesses that his body temperature then was the same as when the mark appeared. All the Hashira discuss a little more about the subject with Amane before the end of the meeting. When Giyu Tomioka tries to leave while the other Hashira try to stay and talk a little more and when Sanemi Shinazugawa almost starts to fight with him, Himejima claps his hands loudly, surprising and shaking Muichiro and all the others in the room.
Tanjiro later tells that after Mitsuri's training, Muichiro takes care of the fast movement training. At the same time, Tanjiro also explains that those who have already achieved a grade will train in order to be able to continuously declare in their "marked state". While telling this, a picture of a happy Mitsuri standing on both Tanjiro and Muichiro's lap and Nezuko lying on the floor is shown.
After Tanjiro gets permission to go to the next training session after Uzui's, Muichiro is seen fighting Tanjiro. Muichiro tells him that he has improved a lot in his speed and that he is trying to help Tanjiro's muscles relax and tighten more easily. Tokito says that once Tanjiro is able to do this, he will improve a lot. After they finish fighting, Muichiro happily says that Tanjiro's coordination is perfect and he is free to go to the next pillar even though he has only been there for five days. Tanjiro asks if he is sure, and Tokito says yes, telling him that he has done everything he just said. When the other demon slayers in training ask if they can leave too, Muichiro's attitude of expression changes completely. He calls them complete nincompoops and tells them that they will train so hard that the whole area will collapse on itself. The bias is very clear.
When Kagaya talks about the sleeping creature who absolutely despises him Muzan Kibutsuji , Muichiro, Tanjiro, Nezuko and the other Hashira are shown. As Muzan is about to kill Kagaya, an emergency convocation is arranged for the attack of Ubuyashiki's estate, and Muichiro and his fellow demon slayers rush to the scene, hoping to arrive in time.
relations
Tanjiro Kamado
During their first meetings, Tanjiro and Muichiro had a tense relationship. Muichiro reprimanded Tanjiro by throwing a stone at his head after Tanjiro interrupted Kagaya Ubuyashiki's speech, and Tanjiro was disconcerted by Muichiro's rude treatment of Kotetsu at the blacksmith village. However, after hearing Tanjiro's advice about helping others, Muichiro was influenced enough to change his mindset, saving Kotetsu and Kozo Kanamori during Gyokko's attack on the village. After recovering his memories afterwards, Muichiro and Tanjiro became good friends, with Muichiro showing a strong prejudice towards Tanjiro when they were training together during Hashira's training session.
After hearing about Muichiro's death at the hands of Kokushibo, Tanjiro shed tears over the loss of his friend and vowed to continue fighting hard.
Yuichiro Tokito
Yuichiro was Muichiro's older twin brother who lived alone with him after their parents died until his own demise. Yuichiro was cynical about their deaths and said that Muichiro's kindness and selflessness reminded him too much of their father. After Muichiro's death, he met Yuichiro again, who angrily stated that he died too young, breaking down in front of his younger twin brother and showing that he had always cared for his brother and was saddened by his death.
Kokushibo
Muichiro is the descendant of Kokushibo, an ancient demon slayer of the Sengoku Era who later became the first senior rank.
When he first meets his ancestor in the Castle of Infinity, Muichiro is enveloped by an intense fear completely new to him of the overwhelming presence of the demon. Kokushibo feels a sense of familiarity from Muichiro, later confirming that he is his blood descendant. When he tells Muichiro about their relationship, the pillar of mist is shocked and refuses to believe him, instead managing to calm down immediately, which impresses the Demon. Muichiro's abilities at his young age continue to exceed Kokushibo's expectations to the point where he proposes that Muzan Kibutsuji turn him into a demon.
