Orochimaru was the main antagonist of the first part of Naruto and a secondary antagonist during the second part. He is respected and feared by many people because of his legendary power, but also because of his "snake-like" appearance, making even the bravest ones tremble. Indeed, Orochimaru is one of the three legendary Sannin of Konoha with Jiraya and Tsunade. His master was the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. According to the latter, he was the kind of prodigy who appears only once a century. His only goals are to become immortal and to appropriate all the techniques of the Ninja world.

History
Orochimaru was one of the three legendary Sannin of Konoha. He became a village leader by creating the hidden village of Oto for his plans to destroy Konoha. Orochimaru was originally a student of Hiruzen Sarutobi as part of a team of three, consisting of himself, Jiraya and Tsunade. From an early age, Orochimaru established himself as a prodigy. His skills, knowledge, and determination were judged by his sensei to be worthy of a prodigy seen only once in a generation.
He was the most promising of the trio of outstanding Sannin: his ambition and predisposition led him to think of himself as Sarutobi's legitimate successor as Hokage. Moreover, being the most gifted of the Sannin, Sarutobi himself said that his genius would be a major asset to the village, that he had such a talent that only a few appear in a century. Hiruzen Sarutobi had wanted Orochimaru to succeed him as Hokage for a very long time, but perceiving his ambition and unhealthy desire for power he finally refused to let him succeed him.
Orochimaru distinguished himself during the Second Great Ninja War and fought against Hanzo with his friends and teammates Jiraya and Tsunade. Their talent was recognized by the leader of Ame who gave them the title of Sannin in exchange for letting them live.
For some time in Konoha he was part of the Root, the special forces, and met Kabuto Yakushi when he was a child and found him to be a talented ninja despite his young age. He accompanied Danzo Shimura to get Nono Yakushi's help for a mission and asked for a child to replace one of their ninja. Kabuto was the one to go.
Orochimaru had few students in Konoha and the only one known is Anko Mitarashi, to whom he taught snake-based techniques and who was the first to wear the cursed seal, being the only survivor of the experiment out of ten subjects. But he will separate from his disciple, claiming a lack of talent. Several episodes of the anime deal with this precise relationship. Orochimaru's ambition was to learn all the existing techniques and for that, he conducted experiments on humans. One of them was the implantation in 60 children of the genes of the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, in order to create a person able to use the Mokuton. Only Yamato survived.
It was during one of these experiments that his master appeared with two members of the Anbu. He then explained his ambition and that he was looking for a technique that would guarantee him immortality. Hiruzen couldn't kill his pupil, so Orochimaru fled. He fought against Jiraya in the forest. Becoming very quickly a criminal of rank S in the Bingo Book, Orochimaru will then join Akatsuki, a secret organization of ninjas declared renegades in their respective villages. In the organization, Orochimaru was n°5, placed just after Sasori. His ring is Kuchin : the Aether, worn on the left little finger.
We don't know very well the motivations which pushed him to join this organization, but one meeting he will make there will be decisive: Itachi Uchiwa. Orochimaru will try to seize Itachi's body and Sharingan, by the same ritual that he will use on two other individuals in order to seize their body. But Itachi countered and cut off his left hand, which can be seen in his Oto hideout. Orochimaru was forced to leave the Akatsuki, Deidara replaced him as Sasori's teammate.
It is now clear to him that in order to achieve the ultimate knowledge of all jutsu, he must also be the holder of the Sharingan. We now know where this interest for Sasuke, Itachi's younger brother, and also holder of the Sharingan, comes from. It is after leaving the Akatsuki that he started the creation of the Sound village, helped by high dignitaries of the country who approached him in order to help him in his goal. It is suspected that this village was created to satisfy two requirements: to allow Orochimaru to finally become Kage, and to have an army in order to take revenge towards Konoha. So he created Oto, the hidden village of Sound, in the Rice Country.
He found Kabuto five years after he had joined the Root. Kabuto had just killed his adoptive mother when she tried to kill him without recognizing him, causing Kabuto to feel very uneasy. Orochimaru explained to him Danzo's plan to kill them and revealed his ambitions. He asked for his help in exchange for finding him an identity. Kabuto accepted and became his right-hand man. Orochimaru once sent Kabuto to get information about the Akatsuki. But he became a spy for Sasori who erased his memory when he sent him to Orochimaru to prevent him from revealing compromising information. But Orochimaru found the cause of this amnesia and erased it, bringing back all of Kabuto's memories.
The ninjas who form the village of Oto are met during the travels of Orochimaru, for example Kimimaro. Kabuto Yakushi was a spy of Sasori, bewitched by a technique causing amnesia so that he didn't remember anything until he had to meet Sasori. But Orochimaru broke the technique and Kabuto, recovering his memory, chose to stay freely with Orochimaru. The Oto ninjas have a boundless devotion to their leader. This is explained when, throughout the episodes, their meeting with Orochimaru is revealed: we understand that this one is, for each of them, a savior, or at least the first person who reached out to them. On the other hand, Orochimaru seems to see them only as tools, necessary to his plans, just as the Sharingan is a tool necessary to his thirst for power (except for Kabuto, for whom one can suspect a certain attachment, although his medical knowledge is in itself a sufficient reason for Orochimaru to want to have him by his side).
He also trained the quartet of Oto which consisted of Kidômaru, Jirôbô, Sakon and Ukon and Tayuya, who were under the orders of Kimimaro. The latter had been chosen to be the receptacle which was to receive the soul of Orochimaru but this could not be done because of an incurable disease that Kimimaro carried. The Oto quartet was Orochimaru's bodyguard and specialized in seal techniques and defensive jutsu.
Each individual carried the cursed seal since Orochimaru experimented on Jûgo, a man who made an enzyme that made him stronger but also gave him murderous impulses. He created prisons where human experiments were carried out as for example the northern prison where the prisoners all carried the cursed seal. Nevertheless he was also interested in the origin of Jûgo's powers and discovered the Ryûchidô and tried to become a Hermit of snakes. But he failed to complete perfectly this power, which allowed him however to obtain the mastery of the chakra sennin: a chakra allowing to contain the energy of the nature, essential to the creation of these cursed marks.
Personality
Orochimaru has a complex personality; however, he was most often described as "twisted" by many people, including Tsunade. Jiraya speculated that the death of his parents when he was young, as well as the horror he felt when Tsunade lost Nawaki and the tears she later shed when she lost Dan, implied that Orochimaru began to despise the fragility of human life and how it affected those still living, leading him to desire immortality. To this end, the primary goal of Orochimaru's human experiments was to test the changes the human body could withstand and to exploit a subject's unique abilities for himself. Once this goal was achieved, Orochimaru hoped to be worthy of the title of "ultimate being," unable to die and able to achieve his secondary goal of learning all the ninja techniques in the world, which would normally take him several lifetimes.
According to Sasuke, who became cruel with the disappearance of all that was good in Team Hiruzen, Orochimaru's agenda caused him to develop a god complex and to value himself while reveling in bringing terror to his first impressions. Although he provokes conflict to relieve his boredom, Orochimaru doesn't seem to care about wars started by others. His charisma also attracts a number of followers, many of whom he would not hesitate to send on potentially suicidal missions if it were for his personal benefit, expressing some remorse if they are unable to complete a task properly, having no sentimental attachment to any of them despite their values. Despite this, Orochimaru has a real interest in the development of his subordinates and his experiences.
Taking Sasuke as his apprentice, considering him a prodigy like himself, Orochimaru intended to take the young man's body to obtain the Sharingan in order to take the next step in his goal of immortality and learn all the techniques of the world. This goal grew into an obsession. However, despite knowing that Sasuke was willing to do anything to get revenge, including sacrificing his own body, Orochimaru anticipated his disciple's betrayal and showed only a slight degree of surprise when it actually happened. What really surprised Orochimaru was Sasuke's decision to go his own way and finally choose to defend the village he had initially sworn to destroy, which Orochimaru openly approved of and was curious to see what the end result of this decision would be.
He also had an initial disdain for Naruto Uzumaki, believing him to be a poor ninja, until he defeated Kabuto with the Swirling Orb. Although he tried to kill Naruto at that time, after realizing that he would become a threat to him in the future, Orochimaru took an interest in Naruto's development, provoking him during their fight, in order to see all his abilities at that time. During the war, seeing Naruto's indomitable will and his memories with Jiraya, Orochimaru began to respect him. Although he came to hate his home village, orchestrating some attempts to destroy it, Orochimaru despised his former Akatsuki comrades even more. Throughout the second part, if Orochimaru wasn't busy with Sasuke's development, he was trying to paralyze Akatsuki's operations, as seen in the "Tenchi Bridge Reconnaissance Mission" arc and in the "Sanbi Appearance" arc. He rejoiced over Sasori's death and later convinced Sasuke not to kill Team Kakashi in order to reduce the number of Akatsuki members.
One aspect of Orochimaru's personality is also his greatest weakness: his arrogance. He sometimes believed he was immortal, attacking powerful opponents like his former teacher and Itachi Uchiwa without thinking. Both times, he was handicapped in some way, either because he wanted to make his opponent suffer, as against Hiruzen, or because he was too uninformed to face his opponent, as against Itachi. Despite his obvious lack of morality, Orochimaru seems to know a lot about psychological warfare and showed insightful wisdom when he denigrated Tobirama for the actions resulting from his policies. He also has an amusing fear of insects and bugs, as seen at Naruto and Hinata's wedding.
After being brought back to life by Sasuke, his personality changed a bit. Although he was still selfish, he realized that copying someone completely was a mistake thanks to his observation of Kabuto and showed interest in the "different path" that Sasuke was taking. Wanting to see Sasuke's way, he chose to fight alongside the Uchiwa instead of ignoring Madara's war as he had planned, he even made it a point to heal Tsunade and the other Kage after their defeat before rushing to the battlefield. Orochimaru also seemed to be genuinely concerned about Sasuke's welfare, as he originally thought it best to take his time to figure out how to fight Tobi, but quickly decided to avoid doing so when Karin sensed that Sasuke was about to die. Orochimaru also showed signs of regret, seeming saddened by the death of his childhood friend Jiraya. In the anime, he was one of the people who congratulated Naruto and Hinata on their marriage.
Years later, although he was still determined to discover life's greatest secrets, he apparently did so in a relatively more humane way. Moreover, while his relationship with the rest of the world was still dubious to say the least, he at least developed a trusting relationship with the highest officials of Konoha, willingly helping them in their research on urgent matters and also feeling responsible enough to make up for his past mistakes. He is apparently on good terms with Konoha by sending his son, Mitsuki, to the village. In the anime, he also feels indebted to Naruto, as the Hokage, for looking after Mitsuki. Orochimaru's experiences also led him to want Mitsuki to make his own decisions, admitting that he had high hopes for the boy's natural growth, although he sometimes used manipulation and deception to get him into a situation where important decisions had to be made. He also shows some interest in Naruto and Sasuke's respective children, especially intrigued that Boruto shares the same unwavering spirit and loyalty as his father. In the end, his changes made even the White Snake Hermit consider Orochimaru to have become "soft".
Apparence
Orochimaru's most visible characteristic is his snake-like appearance: he has very pale skin, golden eyes with slit pupils, purple markings around his eyes and fang-like teeth. He also has pronounced cheekbones and straight black hair down to his waist, some of which covers and frames his face or shoulders. The different bodies he takes on were all modified to resemble his original form, except for the differences in size. In Naruto Gaiden, Orochimaru's facial features softened and became somewhat androgynous, with the markings on his eyes turning black. He also wears his hair in a ponytail, allowing two strands to frame the sides of his face. In the manga, his skin tone becomes significantly lighter.
Orochimaru usually wears a plain gray outfit with a black polo shirt and pants underneath, a thick purple rope belt tied in a big knot in the back, blue tomoe earrings and shinobi sandals with bandages around the calves. He is seen wearing a kimono of different colors on several occasions, usually in flashbacks or in his hiding places. During his time in the Akatsuki, he wore the standard red and black Akatsuki outfit with an azure blue ring, which has the kanji for "sky" or "void" (空, kû), on his left pinky. After countless experiments on his body, his true form became that of a giant white snake made up of many smaller snakes, with longer, spikier hair, a scaled face with snake teeth and a long tongue, black markings on his eyes, and a pointed chin. Years later, he wears a white robe tied at his waist with a dark colored belt and purple rope, blue pants and shirt.
Skills
Orochimaru is one of the three Sannin, legendary ninjas, and he is worthy of his title. He had enough power to be the 4th Hokage but did not become one because of his ambitions. He even managed to eliminate the Third Hokage, who was known to be one of the most powerful Kage in history. His techniques are mainly based on snakes. He can launch attacks with snakes that emerge with great amplitude and power, enough to stand up to Naruto in four-tailed Kyûbi mode.
Ninjutsu
Orochimaru has a great mastery of Ninjutsu and knows countless techniques. His dream is to master all the techniques of the shinobi world, but he knows that he will only be able to do so in one lifetime, which for him seems far too short. So he developed the immortality spell. This one allows him to migrate his soul into another body and thus possess a powerful body and the life he has left. During this ritual, Orochimaru takes his victim to a parallel dimension of his creation where he takes over his body. Unfortunately it is this that will cause his loss to Sasuke where he will use his will to eat away the dimension and capture Orochimaru. Another way for him to achieve immortality was by affixing cursed seals containing his chakra and a fragment of his consciousness, so that with a fragment of a compatible body he could be released.
Orochimaru's fighting style is mainly based on snakes. With these he can give very powerful blows and use them to protect himself as well. It seems that he masters a technique allowing him to swap his body with the one of snakes, but also to moult like snakes do, but these techniques consume a lot of chakra, forcing its user to rest for a while. Against Naruto, he used the spectral snake's grip, which was of an inordinate size, creating a giant wave of snakes, which is very dangerous.
He also mastered the Edo Tensei, one of the most evil and powerful jutsu of this world. He used it against the third Hokage, summoning the first two Hokage. According to Kabuto, it was invented by Tobirama Senju and perfected by Orochimaru. He placed kunai with a seal of obedience in the heads of his summoners, to make them perfect obedient puppets.
Taijutsu
Despite the fact that it is not his strongest point, one can think that Orochimaru has a normal level of Taijutsu for a shinobi of his level, there are few details about his abilities in this field.
Fûinjutsu and Juinjutsu
Orochimaru has a great ability and mastery of seal techniques. The cursed mark is his most famous seal. With it, he subdued many powerful shinobi and made them even more powerful with this mark. The more the subjects used it, the more they were subjected to Orochimaru because Orochimaru's chakra is present in the seal. He also disrupted Naruto's seal which allowed him to contain Kyûbi, by affixing a fifth seal of his own composition to it.
Invocation
Orochimaru's summonses are mainly snakes of various sizes that he uses depending on the power of his enemies. His snakes for battle were usually the size of Gamabunta. His most powerful summons was Manda, the king of snakes. This one was as cunning and powerful as Orochimaru but also not at all submissive to Orochimaru. For each summoning, Orochimaru had to give him an offering, one hundred humans. Kabuto feared that Orochimaru would summon him in his fight against Jiraya and Tsunade because Manda could easily betray him. He could also summon three gigantic ramparts to protect himself from very powerful attacks. Although these ramparts are ineffective against extremely powerful attacks like the Orb of the Tailed Demons.
Equipment
Orochimaru always wears an outfit of his own design, a white cloak with purple strings tied behind his back. His main weapon is also the Kusanagi Sword, a very powerful sword feared even by Enma, who according to him has a body as hard as diamond. He searched for Totsuka's sword for a long time but in vain, because this blade had no material form and it was Itachi Uchiwa who had it.
Part I
Chûnin exam
Orochimaru is making plans to attack his former village, and for this purpose he allies himself with the Sand Village (Suna). He hopes to use Gaara, create chaos and kill the Fourth Kazekage and his men in order to approach the Third Hokage. At the same time, he tries to get his hands on Sasuke and his Sharingan, and starts to confront him during the second test of the Chûnin Exam. He meets Naruto, and places the seal of the five elements around the one he already had to prevent him from using Kyubi's chakra. He also places a cursed seal of the sky on Sasuke's neck, to make him seek power from him.
He then confronts them by sending them Sound ninjas, which Sakura doesn't push away for long. Her team being in danger, she owes her survival only to her friend and rival, Ino, who pushes the trio Ino-Shika-Cho to engage the fight. The Sound ninjas also defeated them, but thanks to his new seal Sasuke put them out of action.
During the preliminary fights at the last stage, Orochimaru tried to approach Sasuke again while Kakashi tried to use a different seal to make Orochimaru's seal ineffective. Kakashi threatens Orochimaru, Orochimaru taunts him and then tells him about Sasuke, explaining that it is not necessary to take him by force because he will come to him anyway.
He attends the last trial under the appearance of the Fourth Kazekage and delays as much as possible the elimination of Sasuke in order to see him fighting.
Konoha Invasion
When Kabuto launches the signal of the attack by using a technique which endorses all the spectators in the stadium, Orochimaru takes his master hostage on the roof of their lodge while the Quartet uses a technique which forms an impenetrable barrier in order to prevent any intervention from outside. Orochimaru reveals himself and begins his fight against his master the Third Hokage. He quickly summons the First and Second Hokage, Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju, both masters of the Third Hokage. Facing this duo, Hiruzen summons Enma, the king of the monkeys. Orochimaru replies by brandishing the legendary Kusanagi sword. He reveals that he has developed the immortality spell.
The fight is titanic between the three Hokage who compete in the mastery of ninja techniques. Hiruzen has difficulty to fight because of his old age and he doesn't want to hurt his masters, even if they are already dead. In the end, Hiruzen uses a seal: the Seal of the God of Death. He then seals with clones the two Hokage, revealing the corpses of Kin Tsuchi and Zaku Abumi, Orochimaru's students used to summon the two Hokage. Hiruzen was about to seal Orochimaru when Kusanagi's sword pierced him. Not having enough strength to seal Orochimaru completely, Hiruzen managed to seal Orochimaru's arms, preventing him from using any technique requiring seals. The Third Hokage died with a smile on his face, having protected his village and done his duty. Orochimaru was forced to flee, covered by the Sound Quartet, to an unknown destination. The war which follows the Chûnin Examination does not last as long as Orochimaru expected. The village of Suna, realizing the treachery, reformed its alliance with Konoha, and Orochimaru was again a wanted traitor.
Search for Tsunade
Orochimaru and Kabuto go in search of Tsunade, who with her medical ninjutsu, could heal Orochimaru's arms. He tells her that he killed their master and reveals Tsunade's hematophobia by biting his finger.
He makes a deal with Tsunade: in exchange of her services, he will bring back to life Nawaki, her little brother, and Dan, her fiancé, with the help of a technique called Edo Tensei. He gives her time to think about this deal and sets a date for Tsunade to give her answer. He also asks her to prepare two bodies to perform the Edo Tensei technique. On the said day, Orochimaru accompanied by Kabuto went to the appointment and found Tsunade alone who accepted the offer and asked him in exchange to spare the village of Konoha. When she is about to heal him, Kabuto intervenes because he guesses that Tsunade had actually planned to kill Orochimaru, and reveals that she refuses to heal his arms. She then engaged Kabuto in a fight, revealing her strength. Orochimaru advises Kabuto not to get hit if he wants to stay alive. Finally Kabuto managed to paralyze Tsunade with fear by showing her blood.
At this moment, Jiraya, Shizune and Naruto arrive. Orochimaru and Jiraya fight on a giant snake that he was able to summon thanks to Kabuto. He soon notices that Jiraya is weakened by Tsunade's drug.
When Tsunade finally overcame his hematophobia, Orochimaru had to summon Manda, whom he could not control because of the snake's pride. Manda was pierced with the katana of Gamabunta, the king of toads, summoned by Jiraya, who wanted to devour Orochimaru, but finally decided to leave. Orochimaru, Jiraya and Tsunade are no longer able to fight and leave after Orachimaru..
Mission of recovery of Sasuke
Even though he hoped to wait for Sasuke to grow up, Orochimaru sent the Sound Quartet to retrieve him and bring him back to him. He resisted as long as he could, anticipating Sasuke's arrival, but the pain in his arms became too much to bear and he had no choice but to take Gen'yûmaru's body, which Kabuto had prepared earlier. After agreeing to free Gen'yûmaru's clan members in exchange for his sacrifice, Orochimaru proceeded to use the Undead Reincarnation on his new host. Although this act undid most of the damage caused by the Imprisonment of the Dead, it still left Orochimaru unable to use techniques that required mudra.
While still waiting for Sasuke, with bandages and Kabuto by his side, Orochimaru commented that Jirobo or Kidomaru would slow the group down, but expressed doubts about Sakon's strength, which Kabuto mentioned as Tayuya was just as strong, and about Kimimaro, lamenting that Kimimaro's illness had made it impossible to have him as a perfect host as originally planned. But with Kimimaro's death, Orochimaru declared that he no longer cared about his former protégé and commented instead on his desire to have Sasuke's body. Since he was stuck in Gen'yûmaru's body for the next three years, Orochimaru decided to train Sasuke once he arrived, hoping to mold him into the perfect host while being highly impressed and excited by the chakra that Sasuke showed in response to Kabuto's threat to not give Orochimaru his respect.
Interlude
For the next 3 years, Orochimaru trained Sasuke, and together with Kabuto, they traveled from one hiding place to another to avoid detection. Indeed, they were not only wanted by villages such as Konoha or Suna, but also by the criminal organization that Orochimaru had previously joined, Akatsuki.
Part II
Sai and Sasuke
Two and a half years later, Team Kakashi led by Yamato, hoping to find Sasuke, learned from Sasori, who was about to die, that he was to meet his spy, Kabuto, which was an opportunity to bring Sasuke to the village. Pretending to be Sasori in his puppet Hiruko, Yamato, met Kabuto under the supervision of the others. However, Orochimaru arrived while Kabuto was destroying Hiruko, with Orochimaru explaining to a confused Kabuto that Sasori had been defeated, while the rest of Team Kakashi showed up to fight the two ninjas. Although he was surprised that Yamato had survived his experiments involving Hashirama's DNA, Orochimaru was more interested in seeing if Naruto had become as strong as Sasuke. When Naruto displayed three tails in response, Orochimaru escaped Naruto, taking advantage of the battle while provoking Naruto further.
It was only after Naruto submitted to Kyubi's influence and manifested his fourth tail that Orochimaru took the fight seriously, as Naruto was now able to kill him and his body began to reject him after he used his Kusanagi to ward off Naruto. After a duel against Naruto with whom he was equal, Sai offered him the hope of resuming his war against Konoha by bringing him vital information about Konoha's special forces and the Hokage's bodyguard. He also proposed him an alliance with Danzo, but Orochimaru being himself a master of deception guessed that there was a trap. After Kabuto's disappearance, he discovered Sai with Naruto and tried to scare them, but rather than seeking a confrontation, he asked Naruto to eliminate other members of Akatsuki before disappearing. He then realized that they were after Sasuke and after saving Kabuto, they joined the young man to disappear with him to another of their hiding places.
Sanbi
In the anime, sensing that the time was near to change the host, Orochimaru sent Kabuto to find Guren, so that she could help with the preparations for the process. Meanwhile, Orochimaru was also experimenting on Yukimaru, a child with unusual powers. Orochimaru finally decided that it was time to test Sasuke's abilities and watched in awe as Sasuke defeated an army of ninjas without killing a single one and without receiving a scratch. As Sasuke walked away, Orochimaru admitted that although he was known as a genius, Sasuke's powers far exceeded his own when he was Sasuke's age.
Noticing that Guren was watching her, he offered her another chance to prove that she was worthy of being Orochimaru's next receptacle, which she was happy about. Orochimaru entrusted her with the custody of Yukimaru, noting that their two abilities should work well together. Later, it was revealed that Orochimaru had also chosen Guren because he knew that she would eventually become attached to Yûkimaru, which he seemed to be enjoying. He ordered Kabuto to be ready to eliminate her if she betrayed him.
Later, after receiving the news that the shinobi of Konoha were complicating matters, Orochimaru decided that he might have to intervene personally. After the loss of Yûkimaru's abilities and the supposed death of Guren, Kabuto reported the failure of the operation to his master. Orochimaru saw it as nothing more than a minor setback, saying that once he had Sasuke's body, it would make no difference.
Pursuit of Itachi
In the meantime Orochimaru continues to train Sasuke but the more time goes by the more he weakens. We learn that the real body of Orochimaru is a big white snake composed of a multitude of small white snakes (the result of experiments made on his own body). According to the Third Hokage, his parents were also reincarnated in this way.
Although defeated by Sasuke, Orochimaru is not completely dead but imprisoned in Sasuke's body, trapped in his own dimension that he had created in order to transfer his spirit to new bodies. His power proved to be ineffective against Sasuke's Sharingan, so he kept control of his own body. Although Sasuke managed to defeat him, we have to keep in mind that Orochimaru was dying at that moment, and it is possible that if he had been in good shape, he could have defeated Sasuke, considering his extraordinary power.
He made a surprise appearance again, grafted on the left arm of Kabuto Yakushi who claims that he now possesses Orochimaru's soul and can become more powerful than him. However, Orochimaru's spirit progresses within Kabuto's body and now controls 33% of it. A part of the Sannin's soul was nevertheless kept for some time in the body of the young Uchiwa Sasuke.
During the fight between the two Uchiwa brothers, Orochimaru took advantage of Sasuke's temporary weakness, who was running out of chakra, to take the form of a huge white snake with eight heads (Yamata technique). However, having managed to regain his human form, he was destroyed by Uchiwa Itachi's technique, summoning Susanô who himself used Totsuka's sword to seal this part of Orochimaru's soul into a world of illusions. At the same time, a small white snake, trying to escape, was accidentally burned by the flames of Amaterasu.
Fourth Great Ninja War - Paroxysm
After the defeat of Kabuto, and his reunion with Suigetsu Hôzuki and Jûgo, Sasuke learned the existence of the scroll which they had found in one of the dens of Orochimaru and resolved to revive it to obtain answers following what he had learned from Itachi. Sasuke managed to revive Orochimaru by extracting his consciousness from Anko's cursed mark and transferring it into the physical form that Jugo had provided him by absorbing some of Kabuto's modified flesh. Despite Suigetsu's fears about his next move as he recovered the rest of his chakra that Kabuto had taken from him, Orochimaru explained that he was neither interested in Tobi's war nor strong enough to even attempt to take Sasuke's body if he wanted to. However, Orochimaru, seeing the change in his former student, agreed to take him to the one who had the answers he wanted.
When they arrived in Konoha, Orochimaru and the others could feel Naruto's chakra from a great distance. Noting that Sasuke was annoyed by this, Orochimaru continued with the group at the request of the young man. He led them to the Mask Temple of the Uzumaki Clan to retrieve a mask from the ruins, and then took the group to the underground chamber of the Naka Temple. Orochimaru put on the mask, which caused the Shinigami to take over his body. Orochimaru then opened the Shinigami's stomach, a wound that reflected on his own body, to release the contents trapped inside the Shinigami.
With his arms also restored, Orochimaru performed Edo Tensei using four of the six White Zetsu spores that Jugo had activated from Sasuke's body. Ordering Suigetsu and Jugo to hold down two of the Zetsu, the remaining four Zetsu were used as the bodies for the reincarnation of the four previous Hokage. To escape death, Orochimaru transferred his being into the white Zetsu that Suigetsu was holding down by sliding into his mouth. Once the Hokage were reincarnated, revealing that he had been looking for a way to undo the Imprisonment of the Dead, Orochimaru explained that he had brought them back to help Sasuke by giving him the information he wanted. When Orochimaru accused the Second Hokage of being behind the coup, he was rebuffed by the Hokage who later explained that he had tried to save the Uchiwa from themselves. When Tobirama later said that he was heading for the battlefield, Orochimaru's new receptacle gave him access to Hashirama's cells, allowing him to hinder the Hokage. Seeing that Hashirama had broken his control over him, Orochimaru was told by the First that he must first free Sasuke from the darkness that was eating away at him. During these events, Sasuke had visions of a conversation he had with Orochimaru when they were on their way to Konoha. Sasuke said that he did not believe that Orochimaru had decided to destroy Konoha on a whim.
After hearing Sasuke's decision to protect the village, Orochimaru announced that he would also participate in the war effort against Madara Uchiwa. When Hiruzen asked him why he had changed his mind after all these years, Orochimaru explained that he had made an error in judgment by watching Kabuto act in his place and that he was now interested in seeing the result of the different path Sasuke was going to take and not let the sacrifice of the people who had fought for the village be in vain.
Resurrection of Jûbi
Later, Orochimaru, Suigetsu and Karin arrived at the place where Tsunade and the other Kage were, seriously injured, with Orochimaru commenting that Tsunade was in quite a serious condition. He separated Karin and Suigetsu who were arguing and ordered them to help Katsuyu to heal Tsunade. Later, Orochimaru, the five Kage, Suigetsu and Karin arrived at the battlefield, where the whole Shinobi Alliance forces were fighting against Obito Uchiwa, who had recently become Júbi's jinchurriki. As Obito began the final stages of his and Madara's grand plan: The "Infinite Tsukuyomi", Hashirama asked Ino Yamanaka to connect everyone telepathically in order to inform everyone of the plan and try to rally the shinobi to continue fighting. While Hashirama's words failed to inspire them, Naruto's memories managed to lift them up. The Sannin watched solemnly as Naruto remembered the memorial he had erected for Jiraya.
As Sasuke asked Jugo to transfer some of his natural energy into him, which immediately channeled into his full Susano, Orochimaru watched in awe of how far Sasuke had come and noted that he still had a lot of room for improvement. Later, while claiming that he had no interest in the war, Orochimaru noticed that Obito's plan would interfere with his experiments, so he decided to listen to his former sensei's advice and participate in the war. With his help, Hiruzen was able to destroy Júbi's branches into pieces. While Naruto started his great fight against Obito, Orochimaru and Hiruzen watched the flower of the tree stop blooming.
After a momentary lull in the battle after Obito's defeat, the allied forces were attacked by Tobi, who created a huge wooden statue to assault them. Orochimaru teamed up with his former subordinates to effectively overpower their attacker in order to flee to Sasuke's location. He was then impressed by Karin's ability to use chakra chains and it reminded him of Kushina Uzumaki. As they ran towards the place where Karin had last felt Sasuke's chakra, Orochimaru noticed that the young woman was expending too much energy. Contemplating the situation, he wondered if this was really the end for Sasuke.
Upon reaching Sasuke, they found Kabuto merging with Sasuke, apparently to assimilate the Uchiwa. When he asked his former right hand man why he had come, Kabuto explained that his experience under the effects of Izanami had made him rediscover and accept his true identity, he admitted that what he had always sought was to return to the Konoha Orphanage. Wanting to make up for his mistakes, he started to treat Sasuke with his medical ninjutsu and Tobirama's instructions. Eventually, Kabuto managed to heal Sasuke, who quickly got back on his feet and was ready to fight again. Orochimaru was then caught in Madara's Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Kaguya Ôtsutsuki Attack
Eventually, he and the rest of the world were freed from genjutsu by Naruto and Sasuke after they ended the war.
Off-peak period
After the end of the war, Orochimaru returned to carrying out his genetic experiments. He also made a truce with Konoha and the Five Great Ninja Countries that he would be forgiven for his crimes on the condition that he be placed under strict 24-hour surveillance by the Konoha jônin. Despite this strict surveillance, Orochimaru was allowed to move around freely, as the shinobi who were watching him were ordered not to make any kind of contact with him until he made a move against Konoha or did something suspicious. He was even allowed to move freely in and out of Konoha.
Sasuke Shinden - Sunrise Book
Orochimaru met Sasuke, who was gathering information about the Anrai Gang, for the first time a few years after the war. Orochimaru told Sasuke to meet En Oyashiro, who was a doctor ninja, but was a notorious kekkei genkai collector, as he might have connections to the group since his leader owned a kekkei genkai. They took a boat to the En Coliseum, where a tournament was being held and where his clients were present to buy the winning shinobi. Orochimaru revealed to him that Sasuke had a kekkei genkai himself, which forced him to participate in the tournament.
New Era
Over the next few years, having had an appreciation for the natural development of people and the formation of a truce with Konoha, Orochimaru eventually re-established Oto as a legitimate shinobi village. At one point, Orochimaru created many synthetic humans such as Log and Mitsuki using his genetic source in addition to the new cloning technology. Later, Orochimaru and Log orchestrated a test that Mitsuki had unknowingly participated in, which was designed to make her son find a third option that neither Orochimaru nor Log had presented to him. Having failed the test five times, Orochimaru used a drug to suppress Mitsuki's memories each time. On the sixth attempt, Mitsuki passed the test by rebelling against them to forge her own destiny, which led her to want to emigrate to Konoha. Supporting his decision, Orochimaru asked Naruto to take charge of his son, which the Hokage allowed, as it was believed that Orochimaru's research would prove useful to Konoha in time, as well as critical to the shinobi world when the time came to fight the Ôtsutsuki clan.
Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring
Fifteen years after the Fourth Great Shinobi War, Orochimaru revealed himself to Sasuke and Naruto when the former asked to meet him, wanting to know about Shin Uchiwa. Naruto commented on his relatively young appearance, to which Orochimaru replied not to pay attention to details. After some discussion, he explained that Shin was actually one of his experiments in cloning technology and that he would be happy to have him eliminated. He then gave a presentation on the ethics of cloning. When he finished his story, Orochimaru decided to tell Sasuke everything he knew about Shin's whereabouts in the hope that he would kill Shin. Later, Orochimaru mentioned the possibility that Sakura Uchiwa was already dead, which Sasuke denied.
School trip to Kiri
In the anime, when he learned of civil unrest in Kiri and rumors that the Sixth Mizukage was killing people against the peaceful expansion of his village, Orochimaru sent Suigetsu to investigate, hoping to find some useful new allies. In the end, Suigetsu reported that the horrible rumors about Chôjûrô were actually the work of Shizuma Hoshigaki, who was using the Mizukage as a diversion for his coup plans, which were stopped with the help of Boruto Uzumaki. Orochimaru assumed that Chôjûrô had decided to conceal these actions for fear of making the village regress to its darkest hours. While realizing that Suigetsu was directly involved in revealing Shizuma's actions, he decided not to say anything about it, marveling instead at Boruto's resemblance to his father.
Final exams
In the anime, as the classes of Konoha Academy started to prepare for the final exams, Orochimaru came incognito to the village with Yamato, to avoid any agitation from the villagers still uncomfortable by his presence. Meeting Naruto in his office, they discussed Danzo's research that he was analyzing and Mitsuki. After that, he attended Mitsuki's parents-teachers meeting, where he met with his son Shino Aburame. Wanting to become a shinobi of Konoha, Orochimaru allowed Mitsuki to stay in the village to become one.
Arc Combat against Momoshiki
In the anime, after contacting Mitsuki through their snakes, Orochimaru asked her not to reveal her true strength, because Mitsuki could not stay in Konoha if he did. When Team Konohamaru was capturing a bear in Konoha, Orochimaru saw the genin carrying out their mission from a building.
On a full moon night, Orochimaru decided to visit Mitsuki in Konoha. When he found him, Mitsuki was practicing with the Lorentz Pistol. Although Mitsuki was not able to perform it successfully, Orochimaru was still impressed with his progress, thinking that such a skill was proof that he was his son. Mitsuki was not reassured though, as his Lorentz pistol was still no match for Sasuke's, who had taught him how to handle it. Orochimaru became agitated at the mention of Sasuke and tried to offer Mitsuki to accompany him the next time he trained with Sasuke. Mitsuki asked Orochimaru to calm down.
Arc Chôchô
In the anime, Mitsuki brought a scroll for Orochimaru to sign so that he could participate in a future mission. Before that, they had a training session. Although Orochimaru won, he congratulated Mitsuki on his progress. When Mitsuki asked him if he should call him father or mother, Orochimaru said that it didn't matter, because he had been all kinds of entities over the years and all that mattered now was the heart.
Arc Disappearance of Mitsuki
In the anime, when Mitsuki had apparently betrayed and deserted Konoha, Orochimaru was confronted by Yamato about it, but the Sannin was not aware of the situation. Later, Orochimaru found Boruto Uzumaki and Sarada Uchiwa sneaking into his base. The boy wanted to ask Orochimaru about a last message from Mitsuki transmitted by a snake, which said that it was his will. After testing the snake, Orochimaru concluded that there was no apparent hidden message, but suggested they go to the White Snake Hermit who might know more. After all this, Orochimaru remained intrigued, both by his son's random actions and by Boruto's unwavering loyalty to Mitsuki, like Naruto's to Sasuke a few years earlier.
Later, knowing that Konoha would send a team to retrieve Boruto and Sarada, Orochimaru sent Suigetsu (while concealing his identity) to stall the pursuers of the two genin long enough for them to reach Ryuchi Cave. Later, upon hearing of Onoki's death and the confirmation of Mitsuki's loyalty to Konoha, who did everything in his power to stop the Fabrications, Orochimaru was happy to see how much Mitsuki was developing as a person as he discovered more of his true identity. At the same time, Orochimaru was worried when he learned that the investigation into the development of the Fabrications had been covered up by an unknown person, which made him wonder who else could create such advanced artificial humans.
Arc Jûgo and the cursed seal
In the anime, when Jugo suddenly left the base to take care of a mysterious epidemic of cursed seals infecting the fauna, Orochimaru asked Suigetsu and Karin to get him back.
Later, Mitsuki went to meet Orochimaru to tell him about her recent memories of Onoki and how they were manifesting in her mind as dreams. The Sannin scanned his son's mind to search his memories with Log. There they learned how Mitsuki had come to know himself better, wondering what choices were really his and if he was on the right path. Orochimaru was proud of how much he was becoming a real human being, but he was worried about how the child would react to such a personal loss. Log expressed his disapproval of erasing Mitsuki's memories after all the way they had come. In the end, they gave Mitsuki the choice of continuing to endure these painful memories or having his mind reset before he even knew Boruto. Mitsuki decided to keep his memories and move on, impressing Orochimaru.
Arc Starting up Kara
In the anime, after being pushed to use his Hermit Transformation to save his teammates against Deepa, Mitsuki's body began to deteriorate due to overuse. He was then brought to Log and Orochimaru for treatment. Orochimaru was appalled at the severity of Mitsuki's condition, noting that several organs would have to be replaced. Log noted that Orochimaru was very concerned for his son, who replied that he had invested so much time and resources into creating Mitsuki, not wanting it to be a wasted effort.Later, Log investigated and learned that the Hashirama cells, which Kara had acquired, had in fact been stolen from one of Orochimaru's old laboratories. Despite this news, Orochimaru said not to bother, because the genes of the First Hokage were not easy to exploit. When Mitsuki regained consciousness, he asked the boy if it was worth risking death to save his friends, testing his son's resolve.
Later, Orochimaru found Suigetsu holding back the genin of Team 5. Orochimaru stopped the fight, not wanting his equipment to suffer any more damage. He asked what they wanted from him, intrigued as to why such an inexperienced genin would approach him. His intrigue quickly turned to shock and dismay, as they simply asked for his autograph. Although finding the request trivial and annoyed by the statistics the trading card had on him, Orochimaru agreed. As they left, the genin asked him how Mitsuki was doing, to which Orochimaru told them that he would be fine. Noting that Mitsuki had made friends other than Boruto, Orochimaru was pleased with his son's progress in Konoha.
As Mitsuki's replacement organs were almost viable, Suigetsu returned with news of Mitsuki's team. He revealed that they had all returned to the Land of Valleys. Although the genin and jonin respectively went there for different reasons, Suigetsu suspected that there was a connection between the two. Suigetsu's speculations caused Mitsuki to leave prematurely, and an annoyed Orochimaru decided to punish Suigetsu for his carelessness by using him as the subject of another experiment.
Later, after Mitsuki's recovery was accelerated by Log's donation of his own organs, Orochimaru decided to personally investigate the Land of Valleys with his son. When he arrived, he discovered the germination of the Divine Tree created by Victor. He found Mugino trying to leave the country safely with the Daimyo of the Valleys unconscious. He was stopped by an Extern from Kara, who was instantly defeated by Orochimaru after his sudden appearance.
Orochimaru confronted Victor while he was fighting Konohamaru. While Konohamaru was shocked by his arrival, Orochimaru insisted that he was only there to make Victor pay for stealing from him. Victor remained defiant and attacked Orochimaru, showing his advanced skills. Orochimaru easily pushed Victor back, urging him to seek out the fruit of the Divine Tree for more power. Victor's efforts finally backfired, as the Divine Tree trapped him. Orochimaru mocked Victor's scientific efforts and recklessness, noting that this Divine Tree was a crude imitation, incapable of producing fruit. Orochimaru then set out to destroy it. After succeeding and defeating the enemies, Orochimaru decided to leave, noting that he had already informed Naruto of the events.
