Reiner Braun

Reiner Braun is the vice-captain of the Warriors of the Mahr Empire. He is the illegitimate son of an Eldian, Karina Braun, and a Mahr. After a long and miserable childhood in the Revelio camp, he was selected to become one of the Warriors of the Mahr Empire, and at the age of 10, he inherited the power of the Dreadnought Titan.

Reiner Braun infiltrated Paradise Island with Bertolt Hoover, Annie Leonhart and Marcel Galliard, as part of a large-scale operation to capture the Original Titan. In order to keep a close eye on Eren Jäger, who was suspected of possessing the Original Titan, he joined the Exploration Battalion after having obtained the 2nd place in the 104th Training Brigade.

Apparence

Human form

In his human form, Reiner has short blond hair, golden eyes, and an imposing build that makes him look quite intimidating. He is tall, strong and powerful.

Since his return to Mahr, Reiner has a goateed beard.

Titanic form

When Reiner is in his titanic guise, he is 50 feet tall. He has bone plates all over his hardened body, and platinum blonde hair. When he destroys the door of Shinganshina, he opens his mouth in a very mechanical way to release smoke from his mouth. His eyes are bright. Later, Zoe demonstrates that three parts of his skin have no armor, the back of his knees, his crotch and his armpits.

Personality

Reiner is a Human Army soldier who takes his job very seriously and with exemplary thoroughness. He has a great sense of honor, a very strong mentality, and a virtually unshakable morale. He is considered an example and a big brother to the other soldiers because he knows how to gain the trust of the people around him.

Yet, he is shown to be consumed by emotional conflict. Indeed, at first it seems rather strange because he does not seem to appreciate the way he acted before. We understand better when he reveals himself as the possessor of the Dreadnought Titan. His personality shown before his revelation was not feigned. He had assimilated the character of his late comrade Marcel Galliard and had convinced himself that he was a soldier of Paradise to protect himself.

His Warrior personality is initially that of a fanatic and then evolves into a taciturn melancholic. The common point remains his will to protect those he loves. This is what will push him to accept to go on living, preventing him from committing suicide several times during the Manga.

Skills and Competencies

Recognized as one of the top ten graduates of the 104th Training Brigade, Reiner is probably very proficient in the use of weapons and the speed of three-dimensional maneuvering. He is also one of the best hand-to-hand fighters among the recruits, having also trained other skilled fighters such as Eren. Reiner is known to possess a strong body and will, both in his human and titanic forms.

Cuirass
As a Dreadnought Titan, Reiner has a very resistant armor. In fact, it withstood many blows from the Assaulting Titan and could even take a cannon shot from the Anti-Titan artillery of the Middle East Alliance. However, the flaw of this armor is that it decreases the speed, in fact, when the Titan Assailant broke part of it, Reiner was much faster. His armor also withstood the impact of the falling Titan Colossal perfectly, while the latter took the impact head-on.

Relations

Bertolt Hoover
Bertolt was Reiner's best friend, the only person he could confide in. During their stay on Paradise, it was his presence that kept Reiner from going completely mad. Despite Bertolt's obvious discomfort with Reiner's mental problems, their friendship lasted until his death, the last name Bertolt called out was his friend's.

Annie Leonhart
As aspiring warriors, Reiner and Annie have known each other since childhood. Unlike his relationship with Porco, the one with Annie didn't seem bad at first. Things go south during Operation Paradise Island after Marcel's death. Annie and Bertolt wanted to recover the Jaw Titan and return and he continued the mission. They fought, he subdued her, declared himself Marcel's replacement, and she had to agree to continue. Afterwards, they had a tense relationship but they worked closely together to accomplish their mission. After the mission, Reiner felt guilty about his imprisonment. After Annie's release from the crystal in Odiha, he apologized for his behavior with her, who admitted that the urge to kill him had crossed her mind more than once during their mission.

Reiner Braun

Eren Jäger
During their time in the 104th Training Brigade, he and Eren had a brotherly bond. But after he was revealed to be the Dreadnought Titan, Eren felt betrayed, his rage being such that he swore to make him die in excruciating pain. After the time ellipsis, Eren holds a grudge but is more condescending than hateful towards his former comrade, and seems to have given up his promise, now understanding the reasons behind Reiner's actions. Reiner doesn't seem to particularly hate him after he ravaged his city but is determined to kill him so as not to add further suffering to himself and others.

Ymir
Ymir and Reiner did not have a warm relationship but they understood each other well. After the betrayal and kidnapping, she is mocking and condescending to him. For his part, Reiner did not show any hatred towards her for the death of Marcel Galliard.

Historia Reiss
Reiner, under his Eldian soldier personality, was under her spell and wanted to marry her. It is possible that as a warrior, he kept some affection for her, having at heart to keep his promise made to Ymir to get Historia out of that hell.

Conny Springer
Conny was very attached to Reiner, so much so that he refused at first to accept that his comrade who had saved his life a short time before in the Castle of Utgarde was the Dreadnought Titan, even when he transformed before his eyes.

Armin Arlelt
Reiner and Armin were very close. Despite this, Armin understood, as soon as Hansi expressed his suspicions about Reiner and Bertolt, that his friend was the one who had given Annie information about Eren's position during the 57th extramural expedition.

Marco Bott
Although there was little interaction between Reiner and Marco at the 104th Training Brigade, he considered him a friend.

Jean Kirschtein
They got along well during their time at the 104th Training Brigade. However, when he learns of his involvement in the death of his friend Marco, Jean beats him up and declares that he will never forgive him, which Reiner seems to understand. Despite this statement, Jean later forgives him and Annie in the Seaplane and they fight the Original Titan side by side. In 857, they seem to have regained their former friendship, joking with each other lightly.

Livai Ackerman
He feared the power of the Master Corporal and warned Sieg Jäger to beware of him.

Hansi Zoe
He did not underestimate her intelligence, and for fear that she would understand too much about the Titans, he went with Annie Leonhart to kill her guinea pigs, Bean and Sawney. He also had the demonstration of his efficiency in the fight of which he made the expenses during the Battle of Shiganshina. Also, it seems that he identified her as a dangerous enough enemy to tell his side, Peak Finger already having information on her when she proposed a pact. He was all the more appreciative when she offered to help stop the Great Earthquake and was saddened by her death in Odiha.

Sieg Jäger
Reiner admired and respected his captain, but he was not subservient to him. Indeed, he dared to confront him to go and rescue Annie Leonhart, even though he did not agree.

Falco Gleis
Out of interest in Gaby, Reiner supports Falco for the succession of the Dreadnought Titan. But his relationship with the young boy is not just self-serving, as he truly cares for him, as demonstrated by the several times he puts his life on the line to save him.

Gaby Braun
Reiner is very fond of his young cousin. Although he admires her courage, he wants to prevent her from inheriting the Dreadnought Titan, because he wants to spare her the suffering he went through when he became a Warrior.

Peak Finger
They met as children as aspiring warriors. Trusting in her intelligence and stamina, he is not prone to worrying about her often, which does not prevent him from caring about his comrade, as shown by his reaction when he believes her to be wounded and falling off the Maria Wall during the Second Battle of Shiganshina.

Marcel Galliard
Unlike his brother Porco, Marcel had a good relationship with Reiner, not hesitating to step in when his brother attacked him. He even sacrificed himself to save him from Ymir, then in the form of a pure Titan.

Porco Galliard
Porco and Reiner had a complicated relationship. In addition to competing for the Dreadnought Titan, Porco's younger brother Marcel died to save Reiner's life. Although Reiner regrets it, Porco is not comfortable around him, and seems to hold a grudge. However, their relationship was not all bad: Porco shows sympathy for Reiner after Gaby runs away, and Reiner is distraught, in tears, over Porco's death...

Karina Braun
She is Reiner's mother. She raised him alone, his father, a Mahr, having disowned him because of his Eldian blood. When he was a child, he was very fond of her and she had a great influence on him. But after his return from Paradise ten years later, he is much colder, despising her racism towards the Eldians of the island. Despite this, he still loves her, being bruised when Hansi announces that it is too late to save Revelio, thinking that she is dead or will die. It turns out that he thought she only loved him because he was a Warrior, which made him feel even worse, and he was surprised and moved to tears when his mother hugged him at the end of the Battle of Heaven and Earth when he told her that he was not the Dreadnought Titan.

Earth Demon
He had identified this being as the true enemy he personified, insulting him for titanizing humans and sending them after him.

Notes

  • Reiner is revealed to be the Dreadnought Titan; thus, he is considered a traitor even though Keith Shardiz had told him that he was "the most likely to gain the trust of his comrades," which is particularly ironic.
  • In episode 2, Reiner and Bertolt are in the crowd when the mission to retrieve the Maria wall is announced. This scene is only present in the anime.
According to Hajime Isayama, among all the male recruits of the 104th Training Brigade, Reiner is the most popular boy.
  • The design of the battleship titan was inspired by the American wrestler Brock Lesnar.
  • In German, the word "Braun" means "brown".
  • In Chapter 38, during a conversation with Ymir, it is said that they are "not very interested" in the opposite sex. This is a euphemism that the Japanese generally use to refer to someone who is homosexual. However, there are hints that he may have a crush on Christa, referring to her as "cute" and thinking of wanting to marry her when she is nice to him. This, along with his identity issues, leaving several questions regarding his sexual orientation. The "Outside" Guide states her birthday is August 1. This is known to fans as "Yaoi Day," referring to the otaku shorthand of "801" used to designate the gender.
  • When Eren is pestered with questions by the other recruits during episode 3, everyone is around him to learn more about the Maria Wall incident. However, Reiner stays away, not seeming the least bit interested. However at one point, a question is asked about the Dreadnought Titan, he then looks at Eren out of the corner of his eye as if something had caught his attention.
  • During the 57th Extra-Muros expedition, Reiner is caught in the hand of the Female Titan. In the anime, he strangely looks to the right with his head while giving little headshakes to point a spot at the titan. The Titan made him disappear from Jean and Armin's sight but he managed to get out of the palm of the titan's hand.
  • The decisions Reiner makes are often seen as the right thing to do and his presence is comforting and reassuring. Only Annie seems to ignore Reiner.
  • Reiner was ranked 8th in the Character Popularity Poll.
