Apparence
Unohana has the appearance of a slim and very young woman with blue eyes and black hair. She wears the standard Shinigami captain's uniform in addition to using an obi instead of the normal belt, which hides her well-endowed chest. Her hair is long and is always worn as a big braid on the front of her body. More than 100 years ago, she didn't have the big braid, instead wearing her hair in front of her like a loose ponytail. While keeping a kind and gentle look most of the time, during her battle with Kenpachi Zaraki, her eyes appear dark and very threatening. She also wears her hair loose for the first time and is revealed to have covered a noticeable scar between her collarbone, inflicted by Kenpachi when he was young. Before Kenpachi inflicted this scar on her, she did not tie her hair in front of her, but wore it at all times.
Unlike most Shinigami who wear their Zanpakutō in their belts, Unohana has a large string attached to the sheath of her Zanpakutō and wears it on her shoulder, or her lieutenant, Isane Kotetsu , wears it for her whenever they are together on the battlefield.
Personality
Unohana has a gentle, warm personality that enhances her appearance. Unohana is a soft-spoken, polite and caring woman who uses honorific titles to address everyone, including her subordinates and the enemy. She rarely shows signs of panic or distress and has a strong sense of duty, as evidenced by the times she orders the imprisonment of Hanatarō Yamada and Isane Kotetsu's pursuit of Renji Abarai when he runs away with Rukia Kuchiki . Despite her sense of duty, she also heals almost everyone around her, including Renji after being defeated by his captain, Gantenbainne Mosqueda upon his arrival in Hueco Mundo , and the Vizards , referring to them as allies despiteShinji's reluctance to do so . With her grace and kind manner, she quietly lets others know that even though she is gentle, she is not to be taken lightly. Despite her gentle nature, many members of the Eleventh Division and even her fellow captains fear her.
However, after the revelation of her past as the first Kenpachi and Shunsui Kyōraku calling her to tap into her experience at the time, Unohana's personality reverts to her original violent and bloodthirsty nature; once she meets Kenpachi Zaraki , she comments on how the scar left on his chest caused her pain just by the sound of his voice. Unohana herself says that she is in love with crossed blades, and strongly believes in taking whatever steps necessary - even tricks such as hidden daggers - to advance in battle.
Unohana loves strong-tasting food, preferring it to bland-tasting dishes. In her spare time, she climbs mountains across Rukongai; on these excursions, she collects medicinal herbs. Once a month, she organizes an ikebana class for the members of her division and is also the president of the Ikebana Club.
History
At one point in the past, her name was Yachiru Unohana and she was known as the most evil criminal that ever existed in Soul Society. Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto sought her out and she joined him, becoming one of the founding members of Gotei 13. Unohana laid the foundation for what would be known as the 11th division and became its first captain, as well as the first Kenpachi. . At some point in the past, Unohana learned medical techniques from Tenjirō Kirinji , she sought out this knowledge in order to prolong the fighting.
Some time after becoming a captain, she undertook a mission to eliminate the warriors on the outskirts of the Rukongai. Having lost interest in fighting, Unohana wandered from place to place looking for something that would please her sword, and came across a young boy who would one day be known as Kenpachi Zaraki . Attacking her on sight, the boy was able to wound her, which allowed the woman to resume her enjoyment of fighting. However, although she was left standing at the end of their battle, she realized that he was stronger and better suited to become Kenpachi.
Sometime after this fight, Unohana left the 11th division and became captain of the 4th division . As one of the founding members, she was one of the longest serving captains of Gotei 13 alongside fellow captains Yamamoto, Jūshirō Ukitake, and Shunsui Kyōraku . Ukitake also calls him "Senpai," indicating his and Shunsui's seniority.
About 110 years ago, Unohana was present for a promotion ceremony that took place at the 1st division headquarters, with the rest of the assembled captains. She witnessed the arrival of the new captain of the 12th division, Kisuke Urahara . His lieutenant at that time was Seinosuke Yamada .
9 years later, Unohana was present at an emergency meeting called by Captain-Commander Yamamoto where he decided to create an investigation team to locate the missing members of the 9th division . When he gave orders, Yamamoto ordered Unohana to prepare the rescue stations for the wounded, but she interrupted him and asked him if it would not be better for her to take care of the wounded there. Yamamoto clearly told her that he could not send healers without knowing what the situation was like.
Unohana was present when Isshin Shiba made his report about the mysterious Hollow known as White.
Intrigue
Arc de la Soul Society
Retsu Unohana attends an emergency captain's meeting called by Captain-Commander Yamamoto. However, she says nothing at the time and remains silent throughout the quarrels between her fellow officers. After the apparent death of Sōsuke Aizen , she examines the body and confirms to Sajin Komamura and Kaname Tōsen that he is really dead. When Hanatarō Yamada is brought before her by the 13th division after helping an enemy, she determines that Hanatarō should be imprisoned due to the fact that he is a seated officer in her division and may have accidentally contributed to the harm that Ryoka had supposedly done to him within the Seireitei. While witnessing the execution, Isane Kotetsu openly regrets that Yamamoto lied to Rukia regarding the release of Ryoka, but Unohana explains to his lieutenant that despite the harshness of such a lie, it also allows Rukia to die peacefully with the idea that his friends' lives would be spared. After Ichigo Kurosaki arrives on the scene and destroys the Sōkyoku booth, Suì-Fēng orders all the lieutenants to follow Renji and Rukia on the run. Isane, concerned about the order, looks at Unohana, and the latter calmly tells her to leave, only to see the former lose to Ichigo.
After defeating the lieutenants, Ichigo starts his battle with Byakuya Kuchiki while the captains then head to their respective battles. Unohana frees Minazuki, although the actual process is not shown, and saves all those who are injured in the initial battle. She keeps Isane with her over Minazuki while her Zanpakutō heals the rest of her patients inside her stomach. Upon arriving at the rescue station, Unohana asks Minazuki to release everyone and seals her off while calling her subordinates to take care of the injured personnel for now. She then asks Isane to follow her to the Central 46 Chambers.
They arrive on the scene in time to see Aizen defeat Tōshirō Hitsugaya . Captain Unohana announces her presence to the traitors while citing her own suspicions about Aizen's staged death. She also goes on to state that the Central 46 Compound residence area was the only place he could hide and mentions the use of an elaborate corpse doll on his part. Aizen then points out the errors in her analysis, while commending her for seeing through his deception. The first was that he was not there to hide, and the second was immediately shown as he released his Zanpakutō in front of Unohana and explained Kyōka Suigetsu's complete hypnosis. He then continued to tell Unohana about the third member of his group,Kaname Tosen . He and Gin Ichimaru then teleport to Sōkyoku Hill, leaving them behind. Unohana immediately asks Isane to find out her exact location and inform everyone of Aizen's betrayal, including Ryoka. She then takes steps to treat Hitsugaya and Momo Hinamori , both of whom were severely injured by Aizen before his arrival.
After ensuring that the two would escape death for the time being, she leaves them in Isane's care and travels via Minazuki to the Sōkyoku booth, where she tells Yasochika Iemura , the 3rd seat of her division, that the Ryoka do not need help. She then sits next to Byakuya Kuchiki and gently scolds him, saying that he has pushed himself too hard. She then calls Rukia at Byakuya's request, during which he reveals the reason why he allowed her to be executed.
A week after the Aizen Uprising, Unohana prevents two members of the 11th Division from creating a ruckus at the 4th Division's aid station and tries unsuccessfully to convince Hitsugaya to talk to an unconscious Momo, who is still recovering from her injuries.
Arc Hueco Mundo
Unohana and Isane appear alongside captains Kenpachi Zaraki , Mayuri Kurotsuchi and Byakuya Kuchiki in Las Noches after the titanic battle between Ichigo and Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez . Her initial appearance effectively prevents the approaching Exequias from doing more harm to Yasutora Sado , in which the group leader calmly orders a retreat. She then stops Isane from pursuing them, stating that they are only there to heal the wounded, not to start more fighting.
She proceeds to heal Chad and Gantenbainne Mosqueda and orders Isane to go to Byakuya Kuchiki's location as she senses that something is wrong with Hanatarō, who was originally sent with Byakuya.
False arch of the city of Karakura
Unohana appears alongside Mayuri Kurotsuchi after the latter announced that he could bring Ichigo Kurosaki back to Karakura City via a Garganta . She offers to accompany Ichigo to Karakura City, claiming to have faith in Mayuri's abilities, but not without adding a remark about how if he fails, Urahara will be disappointed, which obviously irritates her. Before leaving with Ichigo, she orders Isane to stay behind and help their remaining forces in Las Noches.
When Mayuri and Nemu open the Garganta, Ichigo and Unohana jump out and head to the city of Karakura. As they travel, she questions Ichigo about his fight with Aizen, upon learning that Aizen defeated him without using Shikai, Unohana is somewhat relieved. She then informs him that he is the only one who can stand up to Sōsuke Aizen because he did not see his Shikai. She tells Ichigo that his advantage is that not only does he have the captain class Reiatsu, but also that he has not seen Aizen's Shikai. She finally warns him not to witness Aizen's Shikai, stating that once he does, the war will be over. Ichigo thanks her and tells her that he will defeat Aizen.
As they return to the world of the living, Unohana notices that Ichigo is leading a weak and broken path and asks that she be allowed to take the lead. Ichigo protests, saying it's not necessary until she asks again even more politely, scaring Ichigo into submitting to her will. Once Unohana is in front of Ichigo, he comments on how she can make such a clean and solid path with the class captain Reiatsu, noting the difference between them. Unohana asks what he is referring to, stating that her Reiatsu is not so different from her and that her wounds are healed, it may be because her Reiatsu is too rough and therefore unsuited to the particular task. Ichigo objects, stating that if his Reiatsu were at full strength, he could do better. Unohana does not I believe his reasoning until Ichigo explains that the shihakushō condition of his Bankai is able to give a clear example of how much Reiryoku he has left. Orihime had already healed him, but told him that it would take longer to replenish his Reiryoku, and since he went to help Rukia and the others, his Reiatsu has never been fully replenished.
He then points to his remaining sleeve and says that this is the amount of Reiatsu he currently has. Unohana then thinks to himself that this is impossible, as he doesn't even have half of his shihakushō left, which makes hiUnohana appears alongside Mayuri Kurotsuchi after the latter announced that he could bring Ichigo Kurosaki back to Karakura City via a Garganta . Unohana then realizes that she must have mistakenly thought that Ichigo's Reiatsu is at full strength because it was comparable to a captain's. She then asks Ichigo to run ahead while she restores his Reiatsu to full power while they travel. Ichigo wonders if she is able to do this while they run, to which Unohana responds by explaining how Kidō healing works and that restoring Reiatsu once a body has physically healed is an easy task. Unohana then admits to herself that if Ichigo's Reiatsu is only at half strength,
She later returns to the human world and goes to where Hachigen and Hiyori are. Unohana finishes healing Hiyori Sarugaki and tells the Vizard that she should be fine for now. Lisa Yadōmaru asks if this means that she might not survive, to which Unohana explains that Kidō healing is no different than medicine. Unohana notes that she has finished repairing her physical structure. So, as long as Hiyori does not give up on living, she will eventually wake up. The arc of the bloody thousand-year war
Unohana attends a captains meeting where she is informed of the Wandenreich infiltration and is ordered to prepare for war alongside the other captains. After the Soul Society invasion begins, she finally receives information about the Sternritter's ability to steal the Bankai from an individual in the 10th Division . Unohana then notes that after examining their Reiatsu, the captains of the 2nd, 6th, and 7th divisions also had their Bankai taken. Some time later, Unohana and several other members of Gotei 13 were surprised to feel Yamamoto enter the front line as their captain's Reiatsu echoed throughout the Seireitei. As she notices Yamamoto's Bankai taking effect on Seireitei, Isane comments that her skin suddenly becomes dry. Unohana then distracts Isane from the situation by noticing that she was acting rather girly. In doing so, she hopes that Yamamoto will end the battle soon, before destroying the Soul Society with his own power. Unohana and other captains are then later shocked to feel that Yamamoto was actually dead at the hands of Yhwach.
In the aftermath of the battle for the Soul Society, Isane begins to express concern over the 4th Division's decision to stay inside. Mentioning that perhaps they could have saved more people, Unohana cuts her off and reminds her not to act on emotion. Seeing her start to cry, the captain tells her to hold back her tears because the decision was the captain-commander's last order. Unohana and the other captains later gather outside the Seireitei to witness the arrival of the Royal Guard . Tenjirō Kirinji asks Unohana if she used the healing techniques he taught her, noting that there seems to have been a lot of deaths. When Senjumaru Shutaratente to take Byakuya, Renji, and Rukia to the Tenchūren of the Royal Guard so that they can be taken to the Royal Palace, Unohana notes that their condition is too critical for them to leave the Seireitei. However, the Royal Guard insists on taking them because Unohana's powers are not enough to cure Byakuya. Later, as Shunsui Kyōraku meets with Central 46 , he invites Unohana, saying that she will be responsible for teaching Kenpachi Zaraki Zanjutsu, calling her Yachiru Unohana, the first Kenpachi.
Later, after Kenpachi had recovered somewhat from his injuries and left a letter for Isane, Unohana led Kenpachi to the lowest level of the large central underground prison under Kyōraku's command to train the 11th division captain to become strong enough to fight the Wandenreich. Revealing that they had marked each other in the past, the two captains finally put their long-standing contempt for each other into action and began their fight to the death.
As Unohana and Kenpachi fought, the former proved able to maintain the advantage against the latter, deflecting her blows with her free hand and feet. Congratulating Kenpachi for removing his eye patch at the start of the fight, Unohana goes on to note that this also means that the strength he was currently displaying was his absolute limit. Calling him weak, the 4th division captain wounds Kenpachi with a hidden knife and states that those who hold their weapon in one hand without doing anything with the other look like they are not enjoying the fight. Noting that she had changed from the person he had admired, Kenpachi calls her out for using tricks she didn't have in their last fight. Striking his sword with his hand and slamming him against the wall, Unohana tells him that she hasn't changed at all.
Retsu Unohana
Wondering if he became weaker, Kenpachi explains that he was bored to fight before he met Unohana, and when he fought her, he felt fear for the first time. Enjoying the fight because of this feeling, since then, he had wanted to fight like her. Realizing that he might be about to die without being able to defeat her, Kenpachi can only shed one tear as Unohana pierces his throat with her blade. Noticing that the man almost faints, Unohana mentions that he had seemed defeated for a moment. Ignoring her question and continuing to fight her, Unohana tells herself that Kenpachi will not die, as he gets stronger every time he comes close to death, which is the mistake she made and the sin she imposed on him. As she reflects on their previous fight, Unohana continues to inflict great wounds on Kenpachi and heals them, noting that the limitations he unconsciously imposed on himself in their initial fight are gradually being removed. She vows to continue until he surpasses her as a stronger Kenpachi delivers a devastating blow.
After receiving a devastating blow, Unohana reveals that she has learned to heal just to prolong her fights. Recovering from her injury, she quickly reveals her Bankai and starts attacking Kenpachi again. As he begins to overpower her, the woman thinks back to when they first met and how, at the end of their very first battle, she had recognized him as worthy of the title "Kenpachi". Satisfied that he had finally unleashed his full potential with her brutal guidance, Unohana smiled briefly before being impaled.
Unohana congratulates Zaraki and tells her that he has finally won. He begs her not to die as she laments that she has nothing left to give and that he now has everything and has gained much in the exchange. She determines that she can now die happy knowing that she has fulfilled her duty and that he can celebrate in her place.
Arc of the jaws of hell echoing
Twelve years after Unohana's death, the captains of Gotei 13 performed the Konsō Reisai ceremony in front of her grave in Soul Society to allow the Reishi comprising her body to return to the ground; unbeknownst to them, this ritual instead cast Unohana into hell, where she earned the epithet "Death Sword" (死剣, Shiken ).
Equipment
- Daggers: In addition to her Zanpakutō, Unohana also carries with her a set of dagger-like blades, which she can use against her unsuspecting opponent during combat.
Powers and abilities
Master Healer: Unohana learned the healing techniques she currently uses from the Tenjirō Kirinji Royal Guard. Although she originally learned to heal Kidō as a way to extend his fights, Unohana has become the most knowledgeable about health-related issues in the entire Soul Society. She is known to be highly skilled in both conventional and herbal healing techniques. Her knowledge of anatomy is great enough that after examining Aizen's "corpse" she concluded that it was not Aizen or even real. She is also capable of healing more than Shinigami, as shown when she heals Yasutora Sado , a Human, as well as Gantenbainne Mosqueda , an Arrancar.
Kidō Master: As one of the oldest and most experienced captains, Unohana has advanced knowledge of Kidō and the flow of spiritual energy. His knowledge and mastery of Kidō healing is unmatched within the Soul Society. Unohana is well-versed in a variety of Kidō, has mastered Kidō healing, and is able to easily use high-level Hadō and Bakudō spells without incantation.
- Kaidō (回道, Turn Way ): As captain of the 4th division, Retsu is highly skilled in Kaidō, having taught the technique to members of her division.
Master Swordswoman: Unohana's personal specialty is sword fighting, particularly her mastery of the art of Kendō . It is said that she has mastered all the countless styles of fencing that exist in the world, hence the meaning of her former name, "Yachiru." Her level of skill in swordplay is far superior to even the combat-oriented captain of the 11th division, Kenpachi Zaraki , as she is able to easily defeat him for a considerable portion of their battle after centuries of not engaging in hand-to-hand combat. During their battle, Unohana easily overpowered and mortally wounded Kenpachi several times, losing only when Kenpachi became powerful enough to kill her.
Shunpo Practitioner: Unohana has mastered this skill enough to be as fast as the average captain.
Hakuda Fighter: During his fight to the death against Kenpachi, Unohana deflected his sword using the back of his free hand to create an opening for his own attack and then blocked Kenpachi's sword hand mid-oscillation with his foot, stopping his attack while simultaneously. leaving him exposed.
Immense Spiritual Power: As one of the oldest and therefore most experienced captains of Gotei 13, in addition to being one of its most powerful fighters, Unohana possesses an enormous amount of spiritual power. Along with Genryusai, she is one of the first Shinigami captains to be considered the strongest generation of Gotei 13. Unohana has pointed out that Kenpachi Zaraki's power rivaled hers as a child, even though she herself was weaker than him, and acknowledges that she is stronger than everyone but him.
Keen Intellect: In addition to her general healing skills, she is able to detect the smallest details in her patients. This helps her in her healing. She can detect abnormalities and problems that lesser healers would not. She can tell at a glance what type of medical care, if any, is needed. She is also an avid analyst with a keen attention to detail, able to quickly determine how to counteract any ailments a person may have. Her powers of perception were great enough to deduce that Aizen's elaborate illusion of a corpse doll was not real and that Aizen was perpetuating a much larger pattern.
Zanpakutō
Minazuki: In sealed form, Minazuki is slightly longer than an ordinary katana and looks like a nodachi . The tsuba has an oval shape and the handle is red. Instead of attaching it to her obi , Unohana wears her Zanpakutō on her shoulder by a rope strap in the "Tachi style", or lets Isane carry it for her..
- Shikai: His release command and the process of his transformation are unknown. In his Shikai form, Minazuki becomes a creature resembling a giant manta ray, green and one-eyed. When Unohana decides to seal him, Minazuki melts into a mush of flesh that enters his sheath before returning to his sealed state.
-
Shikai's special ability: Minazuki has the ability to heal; when injured individuals are placed in her mouth, they are swallowed and stored in her stomach. Minazuki's stomach acids are powerful medicines and ointments that gradually permeate the injured, healing their wounds. It can carry at least six people in its stomach. On Unohana's command, Minazuki will regurgitate people from his mouth onto the
the ground.
-
Bankai: Minazuki (皆尽, All Things' End ): When released, the blade of Unohana's Zanpakutō liquefies into a thick, viscous, dark red substance that flows over its vicinity. Once most of the liquid flows out of the Zanpakutō, the rest solidifies into a shortened katana, which can then be used for combat. It is strong and sturdy enough to clash with Kenpachi's blade.
Special Bankai Ability: In contrast to the healing stomach acids of his Shikai, the liquid released by Minazuki functions as an extremely strong acid , capable of reducing a fighter as powerfulElhadji Leye and physically durable as Kenpachi to a skeleton within seconds of making contact with his body ; during their battle, Unohana combined this with his powerful Kaidō to greatly speed up the process of killing and reviving Kenpachi in order to remove mental blocks on his power after his sealed Zanpakutō proved insufficient to match his new strength.
Weaknesses
Zanpakutō
Self-Mutilation (Bankai): The acid produced by Minazuki can also reduce Unohana to a skeleton on contact, though this is mitigated by his use of Kidō to immediately and continuously heal himself.
