Rukia Kuchiki

Rukia Kuchiki (朽木 ルキア, Kuchiki Rukia) is the Shinigami who allowed Ichigo Kurosaki to have his Shinigami powers for the first time. She was an Officer of the 13th Division under Jūshirō Ukitake before being sentenced to death by the Soul Society for giving Ichigo his powers, before being acquitted. She will then become part of the team in charge of protecting Karakura led by Tōshirō Hitsugaya in order to protect the Real World from the Arrancars. She then goes to rescue Orihime, who has been kidnapped, in Hueco Mundo. After the war against Aizen and the Arrancars, she obtained the position of Vice-Captain of the 13th Division before becoming its Captain, 10 years after the Millennial Bloody War.

Appearance

Small and slender, Rukia has pale skin and purplish eyes. Her hair is black with a few strands in front of her face. Byakuya said that she looks a lot like her late older sister Hisana Kuchiki.

As a Shinigami of Gotei 13, Rukia wears the standard Shinigami Shihakushō. Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat, Rukia's hairstyle has changed, she now looks like a bob that frames her face. She wears white tekkō mittens, similar to Byakuya's, that extend to her elbows. As Vice-Captain, she wears her division badge around the left sleeve of her uniform, which has just been shortened to reach her upper arm. Ten years after the defeat of Yhwach, Rukia's hair has grown longer, reaching below her shoulders. She also wears the standard captain's haori over her shihakushō.

Personality

Originally born into a lower class, Rukia maintains her modesty even after being adopted by the nobility and continues to relate to everyone equally. However, her cool and lonely demeanor often forces her to hide her personal troubles, even from her friends. Although she tells Ichigo that she is almost ten times older than him, she has no knowledge of the mores of the modern living world (since Soul Society resembles the Edo era of Japan). Rukia constantly seems to have a serious and sorry look, but despite that, she remains a humorous character (especially when she makes one of her rabbit drawings to explain something). She often seems indifferent and cold with the other characters as with Ichigo at the beginning of the manga, but little by little, we discover that she is very sensitive, especially when Ichigo comes to save her or when one of her friends is in great danger.

Relations

Ichigo Kurosaki

Rukia has a complex, energetic and dynamic relationship with Ichigo. The exact nature of their relationship remains for the moment rather ambiguous (love, friendship, brotherhood...). The feeling of guilt that Rukia feels since Kaien's death is transposed on her relationship with Ichigo because they are very similar. When Rukia is taken into custody and Ichigo is severely injured in an attempt to save her, she comes to the conclusion that he died from his injuries. Feeling that Ichigo's death could have been avoided if she had never met him, Rukia loses her reason to live and decides to accept his execution. Later, Renji tells her that Ichigo is not only alive, but that he is planning a rescue attempt with his friends. During the Fullbringer arc, she will help Ichigo regain his Shinigami powers.

Renji Abarai

Rukia has a strong relationship with Renji, sharing a history together since they were children. When all their friends died, Rukia and Renji went to the Shinigami Academy, aware of their high spiritual potential. At the end of the manga, less than ten years after the defeat of Yhwach, Rukia and Renji have a little girl: Ichika Abarai.

Kaien Shiba

Kaien Shiba was the vice-captain of Rukia. He was also a very good friend. But one day, his wife was killed by a Hollow and out of honor, he decided to go and fight him alone. That's when the Hollow took over Kaien Shiba's body and Rukia had no choice but to kill him. After his death, he had a few seconds of lucidity where he thanked her for killing him because it was the only solution and that he would go to his wife. However, he did not know that she had only killed him out of protective instinct. Rukia then felt very guilty since that day and remains today very marked by this fact.

Byakuya Kuchiki

Byakuya is her adoptive brother, however their relationship is rather cold (Rukia even thought that Byakuya would sacrifice her in the name of the law without regrets). In reality, Byakuya has a great affection for her, even saying (indirectly) that she is his pride. Among other things, Rukia has a great admiration for him and considers having him as a big brother as one of the most important things in her life.

Jūshirō Ukitake

Rukia has a good relationship with her captain, he supports her a lot morally, especially when Kaien Shiba, (the former vice-captain of the 13th division) died. Ukitake doesn't like the formality used by Rukia during their talks, so he is very familiar with her, and although Rukia is often embarrassed at first, she enjoys this kind of exchange.

Orihime Inoue

Rukia and Orihime gradually become great friends although Orihime is a bit jealous of the relationship between Ichigo and Rukia.

• Dark Rukia is an alternative version of Rukia obtained when she is merged with the main antagonists of the movie three: Fade to Black.

• Wanting to draw a shinigami in kimono, Tite Kubo drew Rukia - making her the first Bleach character to be designed (before Ichigo was created, Rukia was to be the main character).
• She is the first shinigami to appear.
• According to Tite Kubo, the theme song of Rukia is Wing-Stock by Ashley Mac Isaac.
• Rukia's Zanpakutô, Sode no Shirayuki, was voted the 2nd most popular Zanpakutō in a recent Bleach vote.
