Apparence

Sanemi is a young man in his twenties with an average height and a rather muscular build. He has white hair, slightly slanted eyes and has scars all over his body.

He wears a green version of the Demon Slayers uniform, unbuttoned to reveal his torso, a long-sleeved jacket over it, white curls around his calves, tabi socks and a pair of white zori.

During his fight against Kokushibo, he lost his right index finger and his right middle finger.

Personality

Sanemi is a stubborn, often impulsive, hot-blooded person. The only person he shows respect to is Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and this only after realizing that the latter is much stronger than his appearance suggests.

His cold, rude and contemptuous attitude is the result of losing many people he loved in the past. When Genya joins the demon slayers in search of Sanemi, the latter insults him violently, but Tanjiro Kamado understands that he does not hate him; and that he still feels the same brotherly love he had for him as a child. This was never expressed verbally, however, as he tried to push Genya away from the demon slayers so that he would not be exposed to danger.

Because of all the people he has lost to demons, he has a deep hatred towards them and is convinced that humans and demons cannot coexist. When Sanemi thinks something, it is very difficult to make him change his mind: he doesn't believe Tanjiro when he tells him that Nezuko Kamado doesn't eat humans, and tries to prove his beliefs by stabbing the box where Nezuko is. After infuriating her, he slashes his own arm to entice her to bite him with the effects of his rare blood. Even after she doesn't, and Kagaya uses this act as proof that she doesn't attack humans, Sanemi still doesn't really accept the Kamado.

History

Past

Sanemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi was the oldest of seven children and lived with both parents. His father was violent, constantly whipping his children and wife, until he was stabbed and killed by someone who held a grudge. After that, Sanemi and Genya were determined to help their mother and family.

One day, Sanemi's mother did not return home, so Sanemi went looking for her. He found her and realized that she had become a demon, but he could not stop her from going home and killing five of her siblings. However, just before she killed Genya, Sanemi attacked her with a knife through the window overlooking the street. In the ensuing fight, her mother gave her two cuts that resulted in two crisscrossing scars on her face, and her marechi blood, which disorients demons and makes them intoxicated, gave him the opportunity to kill her.

When Genya ran through the streets looking for a doctor for his severely injured siblings, he found Sanemi and their mother lying at his feet. Panicking and not knowing that the "wolf" that had attacked them was their demon mother, Genya screamed and accused Sanemi of killing her. Sanemi, still in shock, became partially color blind as their mother dissolved in the sunlight.

As a result, Sanemi abandoned Genya and began to hunt demons with suicidal devotion. Without the knowledge of demon slayers or Nichirin Blades, Sanemi equipped herself with a multitude of weapons and fought demons at night, weakening and capturing them until daybreak, then chaining them up to let the light kill them. Despite his brutal and reckless fighting style, he managed to survive thanks to his luck and the unique aroma of his blood.

Synopsis

Bow Recovery Training

Sanemi arrives at the headquarters of the demon slayers, where Tanjiro was judged. Coming to hold Nezuko's box, he is finally introduced to the latter. Sanemi mocks Tanjiro for carrying a demon with him and starts to draw his blade before stabbing the box. Enraged, Tanjiro charges him and manages to headbutt him. However, before they can continue the fight, the leader of the demon slayers arrives to start the trial.

Kagaya Ubuyashiki; the leader of the demon slayers army has just arrived, and he starts by greeting everyone present. His arrival initiates the meeting of the Pillars, which is held once every six months. Upon seeing him, Tanjiro immediately notices the scar on his face, which he deduces to be from an illness. However, before he can react, he is brought to his knees by Sanemi to bow forcefully and show his respect to the leader.

Sanemi's tone immediately changes as he politely greets Kagaya; introducing Tanjiro who is on trial for traveling with a demon. To everyone's surprise, Kagaya explains that he had already accepted the Kamado siblings and wanted everyone to accept them as well. Sanemi as well as Gyomei, Tengen, Obanai and Kyojuro immediately refuse to accept the decision.

Even after the Kagaya asks one of his daughters to read aloud the letter he received from Sakonji Urokodaki stating that he asks for forgiveness from Tanjiro further explaining that Nezuko does not eat humans, Sanemi is still not convinced. Deliberating further with the Pillar on the situation, Kagaya mentions that Tanjiro has made contact with Muzan Kibutsuji, shocking Sanemi. He then immediately proceeds to bombard Tanjiro with questions about his whereabouts and his abilities with the other Pillar since no one has met him. With Tanjiro unable to answer the questions, he is overwhelmed, which forces Kagaya to silence the Pillar.

He questions that something unexpected must have happened to Muzan, but Sanemi refuses to understand. He takes out his blade and cuts his arm, drawing blood. Sanemi proudly proclaims that he will prove their leader wrong and begins to pour his blood on Nezuko's box, trying to get him to attack her.

Sanemi stabs Nezuko's box several times, urging him to leave it. Seeing the Pillar's wounded arm, she is fascinated by the sight of his blood. Distracted from the temptation in front of her, Nezuko remembers her command not to harm humans, as well as her family. With great effort, she turns away from a shocked Sanemi, prompting Kagaya to ask what had happened. After a few words to everyone present, Kagaya then reprimands Obanai and Sanemi, and informs everyone present that Tanjiro and Nezuko's problem is over and that the Pillar meeting can finally begin.

Arc Train de l'Infini

When he receives news of Kyojuro Rengoku's death, Sanemi promises that he will exterminate the repulsive demons.

Bow Pillar Training

Sanemi is present at the Pillar meeting held at Ubuyashiki estate following the attack on the blacksmith village alongside the other remaining Pillars. When Mitsuri Kanroji tries to explain how she got the mark, he looks at her with annoyance because she can't explain the phenomenon properly, but when Muichiro Tokito describes how he felt when the mark appeared on him, Sanemi scoffs and says that it's simple enough to do, although Giyu Tomioka pushes him away. After it is decided that there will be a giant training session among all the members of the Demon Slayer Army to help as many Demon Slayers manifest their Demon Slayer Marks as possible, Sanemi is excited about the prospect. However, he argues with Giyu, who refuses to engage with the other Pillars because of his long-held belief that he was unworthy of his position. Sanemi is unable to read Giyu's feelings and assumes that the Water Pillar is arrogant.

Sanemi's training session was a simple sparring session where all the trainees fought with the Wind Pillar until they were unable to continue. He conducted these sessions with great rigor and terrified Zenitsu Agatsuma to the point that the young demon slayer ran away from the training, only to be stopped by the arrival of Tanjiro Kamado. Sanemi tries to intimidate Tanjiro and says that he hasn't accepted the young demon slayer yet, to which Tanjiro responds by saying that he hasn't accepted Sanemi either because he was the one who stabbed Nezuko Kamado and the Pillar is impressed by Tanjiro's guts. This doesn't stop him from beating Tanjiro so hard that the boy receives several bruises on his face. During one of the few breaks, Tanjiro encounters Genya Shinazugawa trying to talk with his brother, but Sanemi angrily reprimands him saying that he has no brother and to stop bothering him or he would tear him apart.

He continues and says that Genya should leave the Corps because he is unable to use the breathing techniques and leaves. Genya is devastated by his brother's words and calls him, saying that he has always wanted to apologize to him, but Sanemi pushes his words away, telling him to leave. Revealing that he overcame his lack of breathing techniques by eating demons to fight, Sanemi is shocked and turns around, trying to plunge his fingers into his brother's eyes, but Genya is saved by Tanjiro's intervention, which puts him out of danger in the time gap. Shouting at the Pillar's unseemly behavior towards his brother and another Corps member, Tanjiro asks if he is trying to kill Genya, to which Sanemi replies that it would be against the Corps' code, and so he was aiming to leave his brother unable to regenerate, so he would be forced to leave the Corps. Tanjiro objects, saying that Sanemi had no right to do such things to his brother and fights with the Pillar which turned into a big fight of all the trainees trying to stop Sanemi's rampage. This continued until the evening and Tanjiro was reprimanded by the higher ranks, in addition to being forbidden to approach Sanemi, having instead to go to Gyomei Himejima's training session.

Relations

Genya Shinazugawa

Genya is Sanemi's younger brother and the only living brother. After a demon attack befell their family, Sanemi and Genya were the only ones to survive the incident. However, after being labeled a "murderer" by Genya, their relationship began to worsen and decline until the two parted ways and went their own ways. It is revealed during the battle with Kokushibo that despite the whole incident, Sanemi still cared a lot about his younger brother and actually wanted him to lead a normal life without the threat of demons. Genya was moved to tears and apologized after hearing Sanemi's reasoning behind his rudeness. After their battle with Kokushibou, Genya again apologized for blaming Sanemi and thanked his brother for protecting him before succumbing to his wounds and collapsing into dust, leaving Sanemi stricken with grief.

Kagaya Ubuyashiki

Sanemi shows deep respect to Kagaya, believing that he is the most important person in the demon slayer army who should always be the first priority. At Tanjiro's first meeting, after angrily threatening to kill him for headbutting him to the ground, Kagaya arrived at that moment and Sanemi immediately changed his behavior.

When he first met Kagaya, Sanemi was seething with anger at how he could smile as the leader responsible for many deaths and had assumed that he was simply letting demon slayers die while he sat in the safety of the Pillar to protect, claiming that his life was not the top priority. After insulting him in front of the other Pillar, Kagaya apologizes nicely, surprising Sanemi, and tells him that his body can't handle the physical aspect of fighting. Kagaya tells him that he can treat him any way he wants, he is only respected because others do it out of good intentions, and reminds him to focus on his duty as a Pillar as his only wish. Sanemi gained more respect for him when he learned that he had memorized all the names of the fallen demon slayers, including his dead friend.

Sanemi was very angry when Kagaya had died in the explosion in order to slow down Muzan Kibutsuji and lamented his failure to save him on more than one occasion.

Nezuko Kamado

When they first met, Sanemi had a deep hatred for demons. He mocked Tanjiro by stabbing Nezuko repeatedly from inside the box with his nichirin blade and tried to prove to Kagaya Ubuyashiki that all demons eat humans by trying to force Nezuko to devour him by injuring his arm because he possesses the rich marechi type blood which is highly nutritious for demons equivalent to eating a hundred humans. After the battle with Muzan Kibutsuji, Sanemi seems to have calmed down after waking up from his long rest. He meets Nezuko again and meets her for the first time as a human. Asking if his wounds were fine, he answers without ambiguity that his wounds are fine. He then apologizes to Nezuko for everything he has done to her in the past. He told Nezuko that he was asleep during the battle that happened after they killed Muzan. Nezuko tells Sanemi that she slept for two whole years and that she loves to sleep, which led Sanemi to see Genya in Nezuko's expression. He pats her on the head and smiles at her before they part ways.

Giyu Tomioka

Sanemi and Giyu don't seem to have a very good relationship because their personalities are quite different. Sanemi with his usually loud and abrasive speech while Giyu remains calm and quiet. The only time there is respect is when Kagaya is in the room.

Giyu is shown trying to make a friendly gesture towards Sanemi when Tanjiro suggests eating ohagi together. After the disbanding of the demon slaying army, the two Pillars look at each other and smile as their long journey has finally come to an end. They even eat together at one point, repairing their relationship.

Skills & Competencies

As a member of the Pillars, Sanemi is a very powerful swordsman. According to Kokushibo, Sanemi's physical skills and techniques have reached their peak.

Natural Abilities

Toxic Blood: Sanemi's blood is one of the rarest types of blood, making it extremely toxic to demons. It is also unique because of its intense power, the slightest cut of which makes demons immediately "salivate" and thus lose concentration, since his blood was able to affect the strongest Moon. For the moment, the only demon immune to Sanemi's blood is Nezuko, because of his strong will and conviction not to eat humans anymore which was further implanted in his mind by Sakonji Urokodaki.

Muscle Control: Sanemi also has the ability to manipulate his own muscles in order to apprehend and prevent deadly wounds from opening and bleeding in the middle of a fight, as seen when he was torn open in the abdomen by Kokushibo, and was still able to continue fighting by manipulating his own muscles to close the wound.

Crimson Red Sun Sword: During his battle with Kokushibo, Sanemi struck Gyomei's Spiked Scourge with his sword, turning them both red for a moment. Later, in battle with Muzan, Sanemi, having learned from his previous encounter, forcefully clashes his sword with Giyu's, turning both blades red. Turning a blade red hinders the advanced regeneration of demons.

Mark of the Demon Slayers: Against the First Moon, Kokushibo, Sanemi awakens his mark, which takes the appearance of an origami windmill with two dots on the sides of his right cheek. This mark increases drastically his powers and abilities, as when Sanemi was still able to fight against Kokushibo on the ground, although he was severely wounded and cut at the abdomen. This shows that his stamina, strength and pain tolerance have increased enormously. However, he could not throw a significant blow to Kokushibo without the help of Gyomei and Muichiro. Moreover, he would have been in a state of near death twice without the intervention of his two colleagues.

Sword skills

Breath of the Wind

As a Wind Pillar, Sanemi uses this breath. He increases the amount of oxygen in his blood by controlling his breathing rate, which increases his strength and agility to match that of a demon. He has learned to do the breath of total concentration at all times like all Pillars, further increasing his basic strength, speed and endurance. As a Pillar, he knows the nine movements of the Wind Breath.

First Move: Dust Swirl - Slash (壱いちノ型かた 鹿じん旋せん風ぷう・削そぎ Ichi no Kata: Jin Senpû - Sogi) Sanemi rushes forward in a cyclone of slashes.

Second Move: Purifying Wind Claws (弐にノ型かた 爪そう々そう・科しな戸と風かぜ Ni no Kata: Sôsô - Shinato Kaze) The user raises his sword to the right, above his head above his head and makes a vertical downward slash creating four blades of wind that comes down on the enemy like a claw.

Third Move: Rippling Tree in the Mountain Breeze (参さんノ型かた 晴せい嵐らん風ふう樹じゅ San no Kata: Seiran Fûju) Sanemi uses his arm to slice around his body creating a whirlwind all around him that cuts through everything in its path.

Fourth move: Rising Dust Storm (肆しノ型かた 昇しょう上じょう砂さ塵じん嵐らん Shi no Kata: Shôjô Sajinran) The swordsman waves his blade downwards towards several directions.

Fifth Move: Winter Storm (伍ごノ型かた 木こ枯がらし颪おろし Go no Kata: Kogarashi Oroshi) Strikes from above, while falling into a multitude of arcing slashes.

Sixth Move: The Black Smoke Squall (陸ろくノ型かた 黒こく風ふう烟えん嵐らん Roku no Kata: Kokufû Enran) The Pillar strikes from the side, while spinning his body into a position to deliver an uppercut move, creating a cutting tornado.

Seventh Move: Powerful Wind - Tengu Squall (漆しちノ型かた 頸けい風ふう・天てん狗ぐ風かぜ Shichi no Kata: Keifû - Tengu Kaze) The swordsman jumps into the air while waving his blade, which generates gusts of wind to shred his opponent.

Eighth Move: First Gust Strike (捌はちノ型かた 初しょ烈れっ風かざ斬きり Hachi no Kata: Sho Rekkaza Kiri) The user jumps into the air and waves his blade which generates circular torrents of wind.

Ninth Move: Skanda Typhoon (玖くノ型かた 韋い駄だ天てん台たい風ふう Ku no Kata: Idaten Taifû) Sanemi jumps backwards into the air and, upside down, waves his blade to release a circular gust of wind.
