Shanks le Roux

Shanks le Roux

Shanks Le Roux, is the captain of the Roux Crew and one of the Four Emperors. He is also a former member of the legendary crew of the Roger Pirates, the only group to successfully conquer the Grand Line.

He is the pirate who inspired Luffy in his journey as a pirate. He recovered the Gomu Gomu no Mi that was stolen from a World Government ship, and was later accidentally eaten by Luffy.

Hinata

He is the second last emperor to have joined the group six years ago. He is the youngest of the four.

Apparence

Shanks always wears a long black cape on his shoulders and, before giving it to Luffy, wore a straw hat that he got from Gol D. Roger (his former captain) that he had worn for many years. He originally wore brown pants cut below the knee, with gold buttons on the outer leg. Recently, he was seen wearing similar pants, but looser and with floral patterns on them. He is also wearing a pair of sandals. He is unshaven and has a short scruffy beard.

In all of his appearances as captain of his own crew, Shanks has worn a white shirt that is only half-buttoned, leaving part of his chest exposed. A large red ribbon is tied around his waist and holds his sword on his right side. At the beginning of the story, his shirt is folded below the belt. However, in his appearances following his departure from Luffy's hometown, the shirt is let down, giving him a much more promiscuous appearance than in the past.

The most striking thing about Shanks is the color of his hair from which his epithet "Shanks the Red" was born. He also has three scars on his left eye, which were caused by Blackbeard. He is also missing his left arm, as a result of Luffy's rescue from a sea monster when Luffy was a child. The scars on his left eye seem to itch every time he faces Blackbeard.

At the beginning of the One Piece series, Shanks had a physical similarity with Luffy. As Oda's style has changed, Shanks has become more distinct. The shape of his eyes is much thinner and harder than it used to be. His nose is more defined, similar to Nico Robin's, which is more pronounced compared to most other characters in the series.

Shanks Poster

Personality

Shanks is an extremely laid-back man, preferring to spend his time traveling with his crew around the world rather than rushing from one place to another. With an exceptional aura and grandeur, Shanks is not cruel like many other pirate captains, nor does he exert any kind of authority over his companions to gain their respect; instead, he has maintained his freedom-loving adventurer mentality, despite the fact that he is currently at the top of the pirate hierarchy. His friendly nature is such that he does not seek to harm others, and is even able to get serious characters like Dracule Mihawk to join in on his fun.

However, despite his simple-mindedness at first, Shanks is a complex person with some rather difficult views. For example, he believes that if two people share very different visions, it would be better for them to go their separate ways.

Shanks doesn't seem to care what people think of him. He ignores the insults and humiliations directed at him and just laughs with his fellow crew members. Even losing an arm doesn't really bother him, proof of his boundless generosity. However, he would never forgive anyone for harming his friends.

Shanks and his crew are almost always seen partying with alcoholic beverages, and the captain's favorite pastimes are attending and hosting parties and banquets. According to Oda, Shanks is the most like him of all the characters in One Piece, due to his fun-loving nature and cheerful personality.

He is also against unnecessary bloodshed, even if honor is at stake, and so far he seems to only engage in combat when a friend is in danger. Furthermore, he never acts rashly. He also seems to admire those with courage, having protected and praised Koby for his act of bravery during the Marineford War, when the young sailor felt useless.

Shanks also has diplomatic skills, as he demonstrated when he negotiated a ceasefire between the Whitebeard pirates and the World Government, playing a key role in the outcome of the war. He even managed to convince Sengoku to accept his proposal regarding the graves of Ace and Whitebeard, despite the latter's hatred for the pirates. He also managed to get a secret meeting with the Council of Five Elders during the Reverie.

He also likes to tease people just like Luffy did in his younger days.
Although he has traveled the world, Shanks believes that the best sake can only be found in his hometown of West Blue.

Relations

Crews

Crew of the Roux

While only a few members of Shanks' crew have been mentioned, such as Yasopp, Lucky Roo, Benn Beckman and Rockstar, he generally seems to get along well with them, and they regard him with respect as their captain. For Shanks, his men come first; he looks out for the welfare of the crew, refusing to take a child on board his ship and also refusing permission to take on Whitebeard's men who had insulted Rockstar's honor, thus strengthening the unity of the crew. Furthermore, unlike typical pirate crews, it is worth noting that Shanks' crew is nevertheless far removed from preconceived notions of pirates. Refraining from looting, they travel the new world on their own terms (like Luffy and his crew).

Pirate Roger Crew

Among Roger's crew, most of the relationships between Shanks and the other members remain unknown. However, it has been shown through flashbacks that he would fight Baggy over just about anything. The Navy itself described their relationship as a "brotherly bond" and Whitebeard himself noted that the two were always together. Shanks still seems to consider Baggy a friend.

Like Baggy, he had a close bond with Roger. Indeed, he was seen in tears during Roger's execution and had acquired his straw hat.

Friends

Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy respects Shanks who, for him, is like a model, a hero from his childhood and the man he eventually wants to surpass. At first, Shanks never took him seriously. To him, he was just a little boy. He laughed at his dream of becoming a pirate.

Later, after Luffy stood up to Higuma and his men, when they were about to leave, Luffy declared that he will become better than him. Shanks then started to take him seriously. He entrusts Luffy with his straw hat as a "signature", which is of extreme sentimental value to Shanks, as it belonged to his former captain. There is an agreement between the two; Luffy will return the straw hat to him when he becomes a great pirate, a promise they both took very seriously - Luffy defends the straw hat at the cost of his own life.

Shanks le Roux

Upon finally meeting the unconscious Luffy in Marineford, Shanks was not ready to take the hat back. Just as Luffy is currently searching for Shanks, Shanks is looking forward to the day of their reunion. Shanks also now sees Luffy as the future of piracy, and he wasn't shy with Whitebeard when they discussed his lost arm. He was so thrilled to see Luffy's first bounty that he threw a party to celebrate the event. At Ace and Whitebeard's funeral, he wants Luffy to be strong in the face of this ordeal, which must be causing him a lot of pain, and to move on.

They still have to meet face to face, and Luffy reiterated his interest in seeing Shanks again in the New World after he leaves Fishman Island. Meanwhile, Shanks and the Rusty pirates seemed delighted with Luffy's most recent wanted notice.

Later, Shanks was pleased with Luffy's progress following the events of the Whole Cake Island Arc and assumed that meeting him again would only be a matter of time.

Baggy

Formerly, he and Baggy were mousses on the Oro Jackson, under the command of Gol D. Roger. Their relationship was more of a rivalry, leading to constant arguments. They broke up just after the execution of the King of Pirates. So far, outside the world government, the only one who seems to oppose Shanks is Baggy. Ironically, in their youth, Baggy accused Shanks of being too naive and innocent to become a pirate, but it was eventually Shanks who became a great pirate, while Baggy and his crew are very weak in comparison.

Yet, despite this, Baggy didn't try to take advantage of Shanks' fame and when the two met for the first time in years, in Marineford, they resumed the same tumultuous relationship as before, although Shanks was quieter. Shanks managed to trick Baggy into giving him Luffy's straw hat to go return. Baggy then yelled at Shanks, but Shanks kept his cool, indicating that, despite their differences, the relationship between them is the same as it was in the past, although Shanks has matured. Baggy seems to share the same love of partying as Shanks.

Inuarashi and Nekomamushi

At some point in the past, Shanks met the two leaders of the Mink Tribe. Later, Nekomamushi claims that he and Inuarashi met Shanks while sailing on Roger's ship when they were servants of Kouzuki Oden.

Makino

In Fuschia village, Shanks was a close friend of Makino, the village bartender. Makino was very caring towards Shanks when Higuma had assaulted him and Shanks offered to help her clean up what Higuma had done. Makino helped Shanks by cleaning up the food spilled on him. She was very grateful to Shanks for saving Luffy's life, which cost him his left arm. She holds him in high regard, despite his pirate status. She even helped Ace by teaching him to thank Shanks for saving his brother's life.

Marco

Marco sees Shanks as an enemy. After Shanks knocked out some of Whitebeard's pirates with his Haki, Marco insulted and berated him for the damage he had done and even asked him to shut up after the pirate offered to leave Whitebeard to join his crew. When Shanks arrived in Marineford to stop the war, he asked Marco to withdraw, which he did without question. After the battle of Marineford, Marco apologized to Shanks for his previous attitude towards him and thanked him sincerely for the funeral he had given Whitebeard and Ace. Finally, he recognizes him as an ally.

Portgas D. Ace

Shanks is on relatively good terms with Ace, who seemed to greatly respect him for saving his adopted younger brother, Luffy, from a sea king during the Higuma incident. Shanks initially thought that Ace had come to fight him and was ready to draw his sword, but Ace reassured him by telling him of his relationship with Luffy.

Shanks showed some interest in Ace after learning that he was after Blackbeard. He personally tried to convince Whitebeard to call Ace back when Ace disapproved, saying there was no way to stop him anyway. After the announcement of Ace's execution, it was revealed that Shanks had personally intercepted Kaido, another Emperor, who was trying to take advantage of the situation to attack Whitebeard.

It is not known if Shanks was aware that Ace was the son of his captain, Roger, before Sengoku made this information public to the world. However, he was seen making connections to their similar behaviors in retrospect (at Whitebeard's and Ace's burial), such as the fact that neither of them would back down when someone they cared about was insulted.

Shanks

Enemies

World Government

The World Government sees Shanks as a problem and a troublemaker, but realizes that he is a man who will not try to change the world by himself. However, because of the position he holds, they fear that he may get out of hand and are prepared to eliminate him if that happens. The World Government has tolerated his actions until now.

Although he is considered a criminal by the Council of Five Elders, he was able to talk to them despite the fact that they are preparing for the Dreaming, to tell them about a certain pirate. His connection to them is unknown but it seems that the government leaders have a respect for him.

Marine

Shanks and Sengoku respect each other. Even as enemies, both the World Government and the crew of the Reds see the conflict between the two sides as a final option. Following Shanks' words, Sengoku will officially consider the war over and will hand over the bodies of Whitebeard and Ace to Shanks' crew so that they can give them a burial.

Vice Admiral Garp accuses Shanks of having poisoned Luffy's mind with his ideas of making him a pirate when he wanted Luffy to become a Navy soldier.

When Koby was about to be killed by Admiral Akainu for wasting precious seconds of the war by calling for a cease-fire, Shanks defended him and praised Koby for his brief moment of courage.

Mihawk

In the past, Mihawk and Shanks sought each other out on several occasions to duel. Their battles echoed throughout the Grand Line and became legendary. However, since Shanks lost his left arm, Mihawk no longer wants to fight him. He remains neutral, and feels respect, even friendship towards Shanks. He is able to track him down if the need arises. He and Shanks manage to get along, despite their opposite personalities.

Shanks was able to convince Mihawk to join him when he threw a party to celebrate Luffy's first bounty, but Mihawk used to despise Shanks' laid-back attitude. Mihawk even considered apologizing to Shanks during the Battle of Marineford when he declared that he would not hold back his strength towards Luffy. When Shanks made his entrance during the war, Mihawk left immediately, saying that he had agreed to participate in the war against Whitebeard, but that fighting "The Red One" was not part of the agreement made with the World Government.

Alliance Kid, Apoo, and Hawkinsb

Despite not having met them, these three pirate captains have formed an alliance to take down Shanks. We learn that the Red Crew confronted the Supernova alliance and that they took Kid's left arm with them, however, it is not known if Shanks himself participated in the fight. However, their alliance against Shanks seems to have run into problems due to an encounter they had with Kaido, which led to Kid being beaten and imprisoned, while Scratchmen Apoo and Basil Hawkins apparently became subordinates of Kaido. The status of their alliance is therefore unknown.

Four Emperors

Being his rivals, the other Emperors are enemies. Although he and Whitebeard clashed over Ace and Teach, Shanks seemed to be on good terms with his captain's former rival. Furthermore, he was willing to fight to stop Kaido, another Emperor who was about to attack Whitebeard. He took it upon himself to end the Battle of Marineford, taking responsibility for giving Ace and Whitebeard a proper burial.

Marshall D. Teach

The only one Shanks seems to watch the most is Blackbeard, who inflicted the three scars on his left eye in a previous encounter. In Marineford, he was exceptionally tough on Blackbeard and his crew, being willing to fight with them if necessary. Shanks himself seems to recognize the potential danger of Blackbeard and that this danger is far greater than that of anyone else.

Edward Newgate

Despite becoming an Emperor and an opponent of Whitebeard, Shanks met with him personally to warn him to keep his distance from Blackbeard, and also prevented another Emperor, Kaido, from reaching Whitebeard who allowed him to reach Marineford unhindered. After Whitebeard's death, Shanks rescued his crew and other allies and gave Whitebeard and Ace the burial they deserved. Although they were supposed to be enemies and Edward Newgate was a great rival to his former captain, Shanks had great respect for him.

Skills and Competencies

Shanks' true abilities remain unknown, as he has yet to be seen seriously engaged in battle. However, as a member of the Four Emperors of the New World, his raw physical power is supposed to be immense, and he is known to be one of the four most powerful pirates in the world. Shanks was not afraid of Whitebeard, the strongest man in the world, and even had enough strength to stand up to him, while some pirate captains shuddered at the mere mention of his name.

He was able to swim ten years before Luffy set out on his adventure, which means he didn't consume Demon Fruit when he was Mihawk's rival.

He has also been declared by the council of 5 elders to be one of the few people capable of stopping Marshall D. Teach. His power must be quite important since Admiral Akainu had fought, in Marineford, many men and some Grand Corsairs until he reached Luffy, but did not challenge Shanks when the Emperor appeared.

He also seems to be an excellent swimmer, having reached the young Luffy in the middle of the sea before the Sea Monster could devour him. According to Baggy, Shanks was a powerful fighter in his younger years, and if he hadn't been "naive", Baggy would have taken him on as a member of his crew.

As a member of the Four Emperors, Shanks is not only a major figure in piracy, but also one of the most feared in the New World: his mere name exudes great power, as Baggy himself has proven; his claim that he once had a "brotherly bond" with Shanks was one of the many things that earned him the respect of the ex-inmates of Impel Down. Furthermore, Baggy did not hesitate to use the names of Shanks and his former captain, Gol D. Roger, to maintain his respect among them.

Shanks le Roux

Even the fact that Baggy was seen talking to Shanks was taken as a testament to Baggy's own power by the former prisoners, who were not aware that the two had always acted this way. They mistakenly thought it was because Baggy was not afraid of an emperor because of his own strength. Shanks is powerful enough to end the war in Marineford with just words; when he declared that there should be no more fighting, no one rose to challenge him.

When Shanks offered Blackbeard a fight, Blackbeard declined and decided to leave, as it was too soon for him and his crew to fight Shanks.

Moreover, when Shanks asked that the dignity of Whitebeard and Portgas D. Ace, following their deaths, not be violated, Sengoku himself also decided to end the war and took responsibility for it, showing that despite his pirate rank, Shanks is highly respected by Sengoku. Another testament to his influence is that he managed to get a special interview with the Council of Five Elders, despite his status; this nevertheless shows that he knows how to distinguish himself among his peers as a reasoned and cooperative person.

Sword handling

Shanks is usually depicted with a sword. Although his use was only briefly displayed, the fact that he was able to match a Whitebeard blow with one arm is a clear indication of the strength of his attacks. Shanks is also powerful enough to stop Akainu's magma fist using his sword and Weapon Haki. Mihawk is ranked as the greatest swordsman in the world, and Shanks is a former rival of Mihawk, so his mastery of the weapon can be judged.

Shanks seems to have favored the use of his left arm before he lost it, as he is always seen holding his sword with his left hand during flashbacks. He is presumed to have been left-handed.

Haki

Shanks can use all three types of Haki. Even Whitebeard complimented him on his Haki when he used it during his "visit". He showed the use of Kings Haki and Weapon Haki.

Weapons Fluid

When Shanks and Whitebeard clashed, the "skies" above them split open, showing the incredible power of the Armament Haki that both Emperors had imbued on their weapons.

At the Battle of Marineford, he imbued his sword with the Weaponry Haki to block a Logia attack from Akainu.

Observation Fluid

Shanks can use Observation Haki.

Fluid of Kings

Shanks can use the Haki of Kings, an ability that only one person in a million can use.

After saving Luffy from a sea monster, he frightened the monster with a look of anger using his Haki. Later, as Shanks boards Whitebeard's ship, many of Whitebeard's men (experienced men who survived in the New World) were knocked out with his overpowering King's Haki and the ship itself began to take physical damage at the mere presence of Shanks, indicating that he exudes great power.

Oda mentioned in an SBS that Shanks could have taken out all 100,000 pirates and fish-men against the Straw Hats during the Fish-Men's Island Arc with his Haki of Kings, while Luffy managed to take out 50,000.

Weapons

Until now, Shanks has only wielded one sword in combat. His sword, Griffon, is a greatsword with a single edge blade.

Shanks has wielded three different swords at different times in the past: Two different swords as a pirate apprentice aboard Gol D's ship. Roger's ship and another during his time in Luffy's hometown.

In One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, Shanks wields a large firearm that he uses during certain combos.

History

Past

The Apprentice Years

Shanks is from West Blue and in his past he was a member of the crew of Gol D. Roger, the former King of the Pirates. On the Oro Jackson, he was a deckhand with his friend Baggy. As Roger's Pirate crew was the most powerful pirate crew in the world, Shanks fought against powerful pirates such as Shiki and Edward Newgate, better known as Whitebeard. It was during this time that he met the two future leaders of Zo Inuarashi and Nekomamushi. At some point, Shanks acquired Roger's Straw Hat, although the circumstances are still unknown, as well as when he got the hat. Shanks spent a lot of time with this hat in the company of his buddy Baggy, arguing about totally trivial things like, which pole was colder. Their frequent bickering got on the nerves of the crew's first mate, Silvers Rayleigh.

At one point, Roger's crew was preparing to attack a nearby ship. As they prepared for battle, Shanks and Baggy had a discussion about the importance of treasure. Shanks said that treasure was not the most important thing in life. After the battle, the crew threw a party to celebrate the victory. Shanks tried to invite Baggy to join them, as they had found a strange treasure. The two recruits discussed what they would do when they left the crew. Baggy said he would be happy to take Shanks on as a member of his crew. Shanks said that he did not want to be Baggy's follower and that people with different beliefs like them should travel on different paths. The two agreed that they would become like enemies once they left the crew. It was then that Shanks said they had found a Demon Fruit. Shanks mistakenly made Baggy swallow the fruit. Baggy started to scream when he swallowed it and then fell into the water to get a small card that he had dropped. Shanks dived in to save Baggy who could no longer swim because he had eaten a Demon Fruit.

26 years ago, Roger's Crew caused a ruckus on an island. After defeating a group of Marines, they learned that Whitebeard's Pirates were moored on the other side of the island. Roger's Pirates then clashed with Whitebeard's Pirates for three days and nights before the skirmish finally became a gift exchange. Shanks and Buggy chatted about Marshall D. Teach's inability to sleep. Roger's Pirates were then joined by Kozuki Oden and his family as well as Inuarashi and Nekomamushi. At one point, the crew visited Skypiea, where Oden transcribed Roger's message in poneglyph form.

After leaving Skypiea, the crew's journey took them to Water 7, Tequila Wolf, the Sabaody Archipelago, and Fishman Island. Some time later, they left Toki, Momonosuke, Hiyori, Inuarashi and Nekomamushi in the land of Wa. Some time after the visit to Zou, Buggy got sick and Shanks stayed with him never to go to Laugh Tale with the rest of the crew.

After Roger returned from Laugh Tale, Shanks asked Roger for something and then shed tears afterwards.

Twenty-five years ago, Shanks offered to help Kozuki Oden open the Wa border, but Oden politely declined.

Roger was the first to leave and after parting ways with their captain, the rest of the crew sent Oden back to Wa. The remaining members, including Shanks, left the crew one by one.

Twenty-six years before Monkey D. Luffy became a pirate, Roger had contracted a fatal disease and made one last trip with his crew to the Grand Line to conquer it. A year before his death, he disbanded his crew. Shanks and Baggy were together one last time in Loguetown on the day Roger died. Shanks immediately began his quest to form his own crew by offering Baggy a place, but Baggy refused, and the two went their separate ways. Shanks continued to hear rumors that Baggy was still a pirate somewhere in the following years.

The Rise of Shanks

Twenty-four years before the current timeline, Shanks heard of a skilled sniper by the name of Yasopp and went to Syrup Village to recruit him. At some point in his life, Shanks met Marshall D. Teach, who was then a member of the Whitebeard crew. What happened is unknown, but Blackbeard left three scars on Shanks' left eye.

Shanks also often clashed with Mihawk, and their battles echoed throughout the Grand Line. As his power as a captain grew, he and three other pirates were named Emperors, including Whitebeard, Kaido and Big Mom.

12 years after the disbandment of the Roger Pirate Crew, Shans came into possession of the Gomu Gomu no Mi which was stolen from a World Government ship. A few years after becoming the captain of his own pirate ship, Shanks arrived on an island, where he met a strange young boy named Monkey D. Luffy. Intrigued by the boy and enjoying the atmosphere of the village of Fuchsia, he decided to stay on this island for a period of one year. Luffy quickly became attached to the crew, so much so that he wanted to join their ranks and become a pirate, but Shanks refused to accept a child into the crew.

Romance Dawn

One day, Shanks was partying in a bar with his crew, still refusing to recruit Luffy. Shanks told the boy that they were going to leave the village after two or three trips. Higuma and his men arrived in the bar and asked for Sake, which Shanks and his crew had drunk all but one bottle. Shanks offered the last bottle to Higuma, but Higuma smashed it on his head and threw food at him, saying that he was a coward. After that, when the bandit left the bar, Shanks and his crew burst out laughing. Luffy, not understanding why Shanks didn't try to fight back, got angry and told them they weren't acting like pirates. To console himself, he ate a piece of fruit from Shanks' box. It was then that Shanks discovered that he had eaten the Gomu Gomu no Mi. Shanks told Luffy that he could never swim again.

A few days later, Shanks and his crew set sail, leaving Luffy behind once again. In the meantime, Higuma returned and kidnapped Luffy to make him a hostage. While the villain planned to kill Luffy, Shanks, made his return with his crew. Shanks mocked Luffy for pretending to have punches as powerful as a gun. Higuma told Shanks to stay where he was but Shanks stepped forward. A brigand under Higuma's command pointed his rifle at the boy's head. When Shanks told him that you shouldn't point a gun at someone except to shoot, Lucky Roo shot the bandit in the head.

When the other bandits said that it was horrible to kill like that, Shanks said that they were pirates before telling Higuma that he could get food thrown at him or be humiliated, but he would never let anyone hurt his friends for any reason. As a result, Benn Beckman will defeat all the bandits himself. It was then that Higuma disappeared after throwing a smoke bomb. Shanks started to shout that he didn't know what to do.

 Shanks le Roux

Soon after, Shanks came to Luffy, who had been thrown into the water by Higuma, and saved him from the Bay Monster, which he frightened with a look. However, as Shanks comforted the boy, Luffy was crying and screaming because Shanks had lost his left arm to protect him. Shanks told him that it was only an arm and that the most important thing was that he was saved. Later, Shanks and his crew were preparing to leave the village for good. When Luffy said that he didn't want to join the Red's crew anymore, because he wanted to join his own crew that he was going to create. Shanks told him that he didn't have what it takes to become a pirate.

Frustrated, Luffy told him that he was going to create a very powerful crew and that he was going to be so powerful that he could compete with Shanks and find the One Piece to become the King of the Pirates. Smiling, Shanks entrusted the Straw Hat to Luffy, asking him to give it to him when he became a great pirate.

When Shanks returned to the Grand Line, he eventually arrived at the Sabaody Archipelago and met Rayleigh who, to his surprise, noticed that he had lost his trademark straw hat and his left arm. When Rayleigh asked him what had happened, Shanks excitedly replied that he had met a young boy who had said the same words as their late Captain Gol D. Roger.

Within six years of leaving Fuchsia Village and four years before Luffy began his adventure, Shanks became one of the Four Emperors.

Meeting with Ace

Shortly before the series' storyline, Shanks met Ace who thanked him for saving his little brother. Shanks declared that he did not know that Luffy had a brother.

East Blue Saga

Arc Loguetown

A little later, as Shanks was relaxing on an island after drinking too much, Mihawk arrived and gave him a wanted poster for 30,000,000 Berrys.

Shanks smiled, saying that Luffy had finally made it. Shanks started a new party, even though he was in a bad state after the party that had barely ended when Mihawk arrived.

Saga Skypiea

Arc Jaya

Shanks expressed concern about Portgas D. Ace and Blackbeard, and sent Rockstar to deliver a message to Whitebeard about it. Whitebeard was angry and tore up the letter, despite the messenger's protests, and told him that if Shanks had anything to say to him, he would have to come in person with some good liquor. Elsewhere, on a wintry island, Shanks was talking via a Den Den Mushi to Rockstar. Shanks laughed upon hearing this story and said that the old pirate hadn't changed one iota. He ordered Rockstar to return without seeking a fight with the emperor, despite the fact that his honor was violated. Beckmann questioned his captain as to whether he should go to Whitebeard or not. Shanks replied that the crew would have to prepare to fight.

Saga Water Seven

Arc Enies Lobby

Shanks went to meet Whitebeard and then, when he got on the Moby Dick, he made Whitebeard's crew members faint with his Haki of kings and the ship partially cracked. They had a heated argument about Ace because Shanks didn't want him to go against Blackbeard, telling him that Blackbeard was too dangerous for Ace, which turned out to be true. Whitebeard replied negatively, saying that it was already too late to bring him to his senses now. Upset that Shanks was telling him what to do, he drew his bisento and Le Roux did the same with his sword. Their blades clashed, cutting the sky in half as their monstrous powers collided.

Saga War at the Top

As mentioned by Momonga, Whitebeard began to head to Marineford to rescue Ace, Kaido then tried to take advantage of the situation to attack Whitebeard's Pirates. To the Navy's surprise, reports say that Shanks had intercepted Kaido. As the two captains met, the Marines became very concerned about the potential problems that could arise from this conflict between the two emperors.

Arc Marine Ford

After the death of Ace and Whitebeard, Shanks suddenly arrived in Marineford, and prevented Admiral Sakazuki from killing Koby. The emperor commented on Koby's incredible courage, saying that he was going to change the fate of the world with his brave speech, and finally declared that he was here to end this war. Noting the presence of the redheaded pirates, the marines did not understand how Shanks was able to arrive at Marineford so quickly, after having confronted Kaido a day before.

Mihawk left the battlefield on the grounds that confronting the Redhead was not part of the deal. Shanks offered Teach the chance to fight him and his crew. Blackbeard refused, saying it was too early to confront him. Then the Emperor asked for the bodies of Ace and Whitebeard to be buried properly. Sengoku accepted his request and added that he would take full responsibility for the decision and possible future sanctions. The Chief Admiral then ordered the wounded to be taken care of and declared the war officially over.

 Shanks le Roux

After the war

Shanks took the bodies of Ace and Whitebeard and buried them somewhere on Sphinx Island in the New World. His crew, as well as Whitebeard's crew, attended the funeral to honor the death of the two men.

Marco thanked Shanks for making sure that Whitebeard and Ace had an honorable funeral. As he left, Shanks thought of Luffy, wondering how he would accept his brother's death and encouraged him, saying that he must see the light in the darkness, for one must know victory and defeat to become a true man.

Four Emperors Saga

The Quays of the World: The Arc of the 500 Million Dollar Man

We see him later with his crew on a ruined island, reading the newspaper announcing the new bonuses of the Straw Hat crew, during a wedding.

Reverie Bow

Shanks makes a small appearance at an unknown location where he learns about the events on Whole Cake Island. He assumes that the time for his reunion with Luffy is near.

The Council of Five Elders, obviously busy, receives an unexpected visit from Shanks. Indeed, they themselves did not expect to receive such a guest given the context, in this case, the Reverie that is about to take place and which is therefore at the antipodes with Shanks' status as a pirate. But paradoxically, they feel they are ready to be lenient towards his presence, because of his position in piracy. They order the guards to leave the premises. Shanks, on the other hand, thanks them for granting him an interview, and declares that he wants to talk to them about a certain pirate.

Other appearances

Shanks was first introduced in Romance Dawn Vol. 1 in the special Shonen Jump featuring upcoming artists, about a year and a half before One Piece started. Much of his story remained the same, the major difference being that Higuma was absent from the story in this version. Another minor difference was that his arm was bitten by a shark instead of a Sea Monster.

In the second Romance Dawn Vol. 2 (in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine itself), Luffy got his hat and demon fruit from his grandfather, not from Shanks.

Unlike Luffy, there was no real significant change in appearance from Romance Dawn Vol. 1 to the final version. Even with the change in art style, he looks the same, the only real exception being the absence of his black cloak, although he did wear a short decorative cape over his left shoulder at the end of the chapter.

Manga/Anime differences

In the Manga, we can see blood dripping from his lost arm, while in the Anime, twice, his wound does not bleed.

The initial scene where Shanks meets Mihawk was very short in the manga. The anime has greatly expanded this scene. In the manga, Shanks asks Mihawk to join them to celebrate, in the anime, Mihawk is seen joining the party organized by Shanks.

Flashbacks of Luffy and Shanks were extended and some of Baggy were shown. Scenes of Shanks inspecting the corpses of Ace and Whitebeard were also shown.

Trivia
