Apparence

Shinobu is a small girl with pale skin and large compound-looking eyes that have no pupils, only a mist of gradient purple, reminiscent of an insect. She has medium-length hair that goes from black to dark purple, usually styled at the back of her head in a "yakai-maki" style and tied with a white and purple butterfly ornament. She has ear-length bangs that rise a little away from her head before falling to frame her face, with two thinner strands down to her chin below. Shinobu is rather small in stature and has been described as having a small size and weak appearance, which is later reinforced by her saying that she does not possess enough physical strength to cut off a demon's head like the other pillars. According to Zenitsu Agatsuma, Shinobu is so cute that she could easily live on her appearance alone.

Shinobu wears the standard demon slayer uniform with gold buttons, consisting of a black jacket with a dark purple tint and hakama pants that are nestled in a butterfly pattern fabric around her lower legs. She also wears a white haori that used to belong to her older sister, which has a butterfly wing pattern that fades into a turquoise then pink color on the sleeves and bordered by a black band with irregular white dots running through it. She also wears white sandals with purple straps.

When Shinobu was fourteen, her appearance was slightly different. Her chin-length hair was tucked in and she had a different demon-slayer uniform with silver buttons and a darker shade of purple. She also sported a plain white haori with.

Personality

Shinobu is rather relaxed, always having a smile on her face no matter what situation she is in. She seems to enjoy teasing others and can be quite sadistic about it, especially enjoying taking on Giyu Tomioka. Despite her relaxed exterior and her initial claim of wanting to get along with the demons, she can be rather cruel to them, which is shown when she kills the old spider demon sister after giving her false hope of helping her and also tries to kill Nezuko Kamado without hesitation. Later, she is shown to have a more compassionate side towards Tanjiro Kamado and his sister after hearing their whole story.

It is later revealed that her outwardly calm and quiet disposition is worn as a mask, as Shinobu holds an intense hatred for demons due to the loss of her sister, Kanae Kocho, at a young age, as well as the death of her parents, most of her Tsuguko, and the families of her apprentices to the papillions. This hatred is so strong that it is in a state of almost constant anger, which Tanjiro Kamado feels when the two individuals discuss. Her desire for revenge has made her unable to live the normal life her sister wished for her, instead devoting all her energy to defeating the demons.

During her battle with Doma, Shinobu reveals that she also suffers from an inferiority complex due to her inferior physical abilities to her fellow pillar, having been jealous of them for possessing larger or more muscular bodies than her and cursing herself for not developing more to make her more effective in battle.

The young Shinobu had a more impetuous and simple behavior as we saw when she and her sister saved Kanao Tsuyuri, that she had a negative attitude towards education. After Kanae's death, however, Shinobu began to behave outwardly more like her sister and eventually developed her smile and attitude to match while keeping her rage inside.

Skills & Competencies

Shinobu designed this Breath because she did not have the strength to behead demons. Although she may be the only one of the Pillars unable to decapitate demons, she is just as deadly as they are. Using this unique Breath, she coats her weapon with poison made from wisteria flowers and changes the mixture and composition of the poisons each time she sheathes her sword.

Shinobu runs at full speed in a zigzag pattern to generate enough momentum, creating a powerful attack point that simultaneously injects poison into her victim. The blinding speed and erratic pattern also serve to throw the opponent into confusion and create an appropriate opening.

Shinobu Kocho

History

Shinobu was born as the youngest daughter of the Kocho family, living alongside her mother, father and older sister Kanae Kocho. She was raised in a loving and caring home until her parents were slaughtered by demons right in front of her and her sister.

Just as the demon was about to kill her and her sister, they were saved by the Hashira, Gyomei Himejima, who killed the demon. Now more determined because of the pain and suffering they endured, both Shinobu and Kanae vowed to become Demon Slayers to protect each other, as well as to prevent others from suffering the same losses they had to endure. Finally, after successfully moving a rock, they convinced Himejima to introduce them to a farmer.

Later in life, while accompanying her sister Kanae on a trip, the sisters encountered a young girl being taken as a slave on a bridge. Intrigued by her, Kanae took an interest in her and decided to bring the girl back to the Butterfly Domain, against Shinobu's initial wishes. They eventually bought the girl, named Kanao Tsuyuri, from her master and trained her within the Butterfly Estate to become the next Tsuguko.

At the age of 14, she became the master of the Butterfly Estate in Kanae's place, since Kanae passed away at the age of 17. Shinobu pampered the girls of Butterfly Kingdom as if they were her own little sisters.

Relations

Giyu Tomioka

Giyu and Shinobu are both hashiras in the Demon Slayer Corps and are usually assigned to missions together. They have opposite personalities and initially seem to be at odds, as Shinobu seems to feel that Giyu is an airhead and a klutz, assuming that he backs off in front of a demon while she tries to save him. After he deflects her attack, she is angry with him for getting in her way and points out that people don't like her as a result. However, Shinobu wishes Giyu would talk more. Despite all this, it is revealed in the second fanbook through Gyomei's comments on the Pillar that the two like to talk to each other.

Later, she and Giyu are concerned about the Kamado siblings and are visibly upset by the other Pillars' hostile treatment of them. When Giyu later learns of Shinobu's death, he is visibly shocked.

Tanjiro Kamado

Shinobu meets Tanjiro for the first time after he tries to kill Nezuko and tells him that it is dangerous to be so close to a demon. Later, during Hashira's trial, she is the only one trying to hear Tanjiro's side of the story, and has a sad expression on her face as Tanjiro desperately tries to explain that Nezuko hasn't hurt and won't hurt anyone.

She comes to take care of both Tanjiro and Nezuko and is visibly worried about them, even letting them rest in her property so that they can recover from their injuries. Tanjiro is visibly sad when he learns about Shinobu's death.

Zenitsu Agatsuma

Shinobu meets Zenitsu at the Natagumo Mountain incident and heals his wounds after killing one of the spider demons. Shinobu also tries to motivate Zenitsu by encouraging him.

Inosuke Hashibira

Inosuke meets Shinobu during his convalescence at the Butterfly Estate. To motivate him to continue his recovery training, Shinobu condescendingly mocks his inability to do simple things, prompting Inosuke to train harder in anger. Over time, Inosuke saw Shinobu as a surrogate mother because of her kindness. After knowing that Doma killed Shinobu, Inosuke becomes angry with the demon.

Murata

Murata meets Shinobu for the first time at Mount Natagumo when she saves him from the elder sister spider. As she saw Murata naked, he avoids her since then.

Kanao Tsuyuri

Although Shinobu was the one who impulsively bought her adopted sister Kanao from slavery, she quickly became frustrated when Kanao could not make her own decisions, declaring that she was dangerous to herself and others. However, Shinobu quickly warmed up to her and developed a strong brotherly bond. At Kanae's funeral, Shinobu comforted Kanao and understood her inability to cry.

Shinobu eventually made Kanao his Tsuguko (successor) of choice because of her considerable talent and exceptional skills as a demon slayer. Shinobu asked Kanao to cut off a demon's head without thinking, even though she was worried about whether Kanao was really following her own will. But when Kanao starts to open up and expresses her wish to train specifically with her, Shinobu is very happy.

Shinobu has great confidence in Kanao, as she has entrusted her to avenge Kanae's death while using herself as a sacrifice. She is also known to be protective of Kanao; Inosuke mentions that Shinobu becomes "really angry" when Kanao is injured, and Shinobu expresses concern about Kanao using Breath of the Flower, Final Movement: Eyes of Lycoris and thus losing her sight, even though she is the one who lost her life. When Shinobu dies at the hands of Doma, Kanao successfully avenges her with the help of Inosuke. Shinobu and Kanae later give their blessings to their younger sister before leaving for the afterlife, causing Kanao to burst into tears for the first time. Kanao also keeps Shinobu and Kanae's butterfly hair accessories as mementos of their lives, and continues to hold both of them in high regard.

Kanae Kocho

Shinobu had a very close and loving sibling relationship with his biological older sister, Kanae being considered very close to each other since early childhood and having spent their happy childhood with their parents.

The sister's bond was incredibly deep and caring, as seen when they both took an oath to protect others from demons and to make sure no one else goes through their tragedy surviving the demon attack that killed their parents. During this time, the sisters developed a unique family dynamic, where Kanae frequently made light and whimsical decisions without thinking first, which then caused Shinobu great exhalation and concern because of her older sister's behavior. But Shinobu always trusted her sister and supported her sister's decision even though she disagreed with her at first, as seen when both of them adopted and eloped with their adopted little sister Kanao Tsuyuri.

Later on, Kanae's deep love for her sister really came out during her last moments after fighting Doma, where Kanae begged Shinobu to leave the Demon Slayer Corps and just live her life free and happy, stating that the only thing that would make her happy is knowing that Shinobu would be able to live a life full of happiness and die peacefully as an old woman, showing how much she loved her younger sister. Shinobu in turn showed her immense love for her older sister by swearing that she couldn't live like that and begged her sister to tell her which demon had killed her, swearing eternal vengeance against the one who had killed her sister.

Mitsuri Kanroji

Shinobu and Mitsuri are good friends. However, Shinobu has already expressed his jealousy towards Mitsuri's strong body. Nevertheless, they remain on good terms.

Tamayo

Although initially Shinobu had little confidence in her due to her demon status, Shinobu gradually began to develop a sense of respect for Tamayo as they began to work together on a drug that can finally destroy Muzan, as we see where Shinobu was genuinely impressed with Tamayo's skills. as a doctor and fellow poisoner and truly appreciated her skills, as they successfully created their anti-Kibitsuji drug that sufficiently weakened Muzan to death. Tamayo herself was even willing to help Shinobu in his quest for revenge by helping him modify his body to be saturated with Wisteria Poison for the battle against the top rank 2, showing that by this time, Shinobu had already seen past Tamayo's demon status. and had truly come to trust and admire her as a fellow doctor.

Doma

Shinobu has a strong resentment and hatred for Doma, due to the fact that he killed her older sister, Kanae. This hatred and disgust becomes even stronger when she actually meets him and comes to understand and see first hand his twisted personality and his ideas about giving his followers "salvation" by killing and eating them. Later, during their battle, she continually curses him for not being affected by her poisons and sword techniques over and over again, until she is defeated and devoured by him. However, thanks to Shinobu's body being heavily saturated with poison, Doma is severely weakened and is eventually successfully killed by Kanao and Inosuke.

Inside Limbo, Doma, after hearing and being touched by Shinobu's strong faith and belief in his comrades and the ability of his fellow Demon Slayers to defeat demons and kill Muzan, apparently begins to develop genuine feelings of romantic attraction towards Shinobu. He begins to doubt her initial belief that neither heaven nor hell nor paradise exists, and cheerfully asks her if she wanted to go to hell with him on a date, to which she responds with a brutal rejection while having the usual kind and calm smile on her face as a final act of spite towards the Demon.
