Apparence
Shota is a tall, thin man with pale skin, shoulder-length black hair that hangs partially in front of his face, and dark eyes that are often half-open. He is generally known for his unkempt appearance, often looking like he just got out of bed. His facial hair remains untouched and his eyes almost always look tired and flat.
Shota sports a black outfit consisting of a long-sleeved shirt and matching pants that fit into his boots. He also wears a utility belt and his symbolic scarf. He hides a pair of yellow glasses under his scarf to use in battle.
After being severely wounded by Brainless, Shota's entire face and both arms were completely covered with bandages. Once these bandages are removed, Shota reveals a deep scar under his right eye.
His formal attire for press meetings and meetings with parents of his students includes a black suit, blue tie and white shirt. And that in this outfit, his hair is neatly groomed and held in a low bun at the base of his neck.
In his free time or when he is relaxing in his apartment, Shota wears a long-sleeved black shirt and his hair is arranged in a messy bun.
Personality
Shota is a very strict and mostly reserved man who has high expectations of his students. He is extremely logical and down to earth and does not believe in maintaining a good appearance or filtering his words or ideas to others. He is often cold, apathetic and impatient, giving very little energy in most situations, preferring to take naps in his sleeping bag instead.
As a teacher with high expectations, Shota is known to easily expel students who he feels are not a good fit for Yuei, though it is notable that he has not expelled Class 1-A students even though he is well known for doing so. However, it is revealed that this high expulsion rate is only on paper and that he re-registers the students he expels: Shota does this so that they can experience "death", allowing them to go even higher. He can be rigid and strict if necessary, and also has little tolerance for disobedient behavior. Shota is not afraid to put his students through rigorous training and often shows the more unpleasant parts of heroism so that his students can overcome their limitations.
Shota has proven to be very unobtrusive and fearless in expressing his ideas. He has repeatedly mentioned that some of Yuei's exam choices are not practical or difficult enough for the true hopes of Heroes, and he is adamant that some of the systems used by the institution should change. He has also openly stated that he did not believe that Izuku Midoriya could become a hero when they first met. He is also known to lie to his students in order to manipulate them into giving him the best, a technique he describes as a 'logical trick'/'rational deception'.
Despite his apathetic traits, Shota sincerely cares about his students and will go to great lengths to protect them by saving Tsuyu Asui from Tomura Shigaraki, despite his severe injuries. He has also expressed his belief in his students on several occasions and is confident that even people like Katsuki Bakugo would not be influenced by villains. Recovery Girl even hinted that he was captured by Momo Yaoyorozu on purpose during his exam to boost his confidence. Shota is also very encouraging, as he was seen handling his duties as Eri's guardian and adoptive father without complaint. He even mentioned to All Might that she was asleep, indicating that he is very attentive and involved in his role as 'father' even outside of his duties as a teacher and mentor.
He proves to be extremely disturbed upon discovering the ultimate fate of his friend Oboro Shirakumo. He showed intense emotional pain when he confronted Kurogiri after discovering that he was once Shirakumo, showing that Shota has not yet accepted his friend's fate. Because of this tragedy, Shota is particularly harsh on individuals who are unlucky enough to provoke him, especially hurting those he cares about. This was seen when Shota strangled Kyudai after learning of the desecration of Oboro's corpse, blocking Kyudai's longevity alter, tormenting and humiliating the old scientist in a show of pure rage.
Despite his personality, Shota has shown on several occasions that he is not completely devoid of joy or humor: he often smiles when he is impressed by one of his students or after he fools them with one of his 'rational deceptions'.
History and Biography
Arc Alters Assessment Test
Shota is first seen in his sleeping bag on the classroom floor, and when he speaks, he startles the class. He then introduces himself to his students, for whom he is the homeroom teacher. He then orders them to change into their sports uniforms, as they will be tested on their individuality. Shota then showed his students a glimpse of what the individuality test was all about, with Katsuki as an example. After a bit of fun among the students, he decided to put the pressure on by excluding the last one from the test.
Shota then records the performance of his students in each test. When Izuku throws the ball during the pitching trial, Shota cancels his Alter, deliberately provoking Izuku to get a low score. Shota then explains that, in his observation, Izuku is unable to use his Alter effectively and theoretically asks Izuku if anyone would know how to save him. Izuku tries to explain, but Shota wraps Izuku in his cloth, proving his point about rescue. Shota tells Izuku that he can have courage, he will just be a burden to be saved all the time and concludes that his "power" will not help him become a hero if he needs to be saved. Shota decides to let Izuku have a second chance. He then predicts that Izuku has a zero probability, but after Izuku throws the ball a long distance without getting greatly injured, Shota is surprised and happy at the same time.
As the enraged Katsuki tries to hit Izuku, Shota uses his scarf to prevent him from doing so. At the end of the test, Shota shows everyone's ranking in the test and reveals that he lied about the expulsion rule, explaining that it was a trick to get everyone to give their best, much to the shock of the students. He tells his students that their syllabus sheets are in their classrooms and tells Izuku to go see Chiyo Shuzenji to get well. As he walks away, All Might approaches him, calling him a liar and confronts him with the fact that he already expelled a whole new class of first graders last year. All Might finds it strange that he didn't expel Izuku on the spot and concludes that even Shota could sense Izuku's potential. However, Shota replies that Izuku is above the "zero" mark.
Arc SCA
Shota reviews the results of the battle trial, telling Katsuki to stop being childish as he wastes his talent, then encourages Izuku to not hesitate to use his Alter, asking him to work more often. He then tells the class that they need to choose a class president. Shota then tells his students that they are fit to exercise a rescue trial, supervised by him, All Might and another hero. He then orders his students to get ready. In the training area of the rescue trial, Shota asks Number 13 where All Might is. He replies that he is taking a nap after doing his hero work. Shota decides to start the rescue trial exercise without him. After Number 13's speech, Shota feels a threatening presence, looks behind him and sees villains appearing out of nowhere. He asks Number 13 to lead his students out as he prepares for battle. He then realizes that they are the ones who broke into Yuei the day before.
Although Izuku expresses his concern in his teacher's ability to fight all the bad guys alone, Shota says that a hero has more than one trick up his sleeve and tells Number 13 that he is counting on him. Shota begins his fight, using his tissues to wrap three villains, then uses it to crush the villains against each other. He is approached by a mutant who says he can't erase the Mutation-type Alters. Shota calmly agrees and says he is unable to do so and proceeds to deliver a powerful punch to the mutant's face. Another villain tries to attack, but Shota uses his web to grab the mutant's leg.
Shota then confronts Tomura Shigaraki, wondering if he is the leader. Shota tries to elbow Shigaraki, but Shigaraki manages to grab Shota's elbow and begins to disintegrate his elbow. However, Shota hits him with his other arm. He is then approached by the monstrous creature, Brainless. Although he puts up a valiant effort, Shota is defeated by Brainless who does not hesitate to torture him. When Shigaraki grabs Tsuyu's face, Shota uses his Alter against him, canceling Shigaraki's disintegration and preventing Tsuyu from being disintegrated. Shota's face is then hit against the ground by Brainless. All Might then appears and saves Shota. After the battle with the supervillain alliance is over, Shota finds himself in the medical office of the Academy.
Arc Yuei Sports Championship
The next day, Shota arrives in class, his face completely covered in bandages, and informs his students that the Yuei Sports Championship is coming up and that they should prepare themselves. He explains that the point of the event is to show the supervillains that heroes can face danger and as such, security will be heightened this year. Shota then says that many professional heroes will be watching the event, then encourages his students to make the most of their time at the championship to gain notoriety, as they will only have three chances (3 years at Yuei). He comments on the events alongside Present Mic.
Arc Stain
Shota enters the second A class, fully recovered from his injuries, no longer needing to wear bandages. Aizawa announces a special communication class. They will have to choose their hero names. Normally, these names should remain temporary but some heroes keep it all their career like himself. It is therefore necessary to be very careful in the choice of its alias. Then, he presents the internship offers made to the apprentice heroes by the professional heroes' agencies. Shoto and Katsuki are the ones who had the most requests. In the teacher's room, he looks at Tenya's choice of workplace which is in Hosu city, especially that of Manual's agency, pointing out that there were better appointments for him. At the station, he wishes his students good luck during their training. During class, Shota tells his students that they will be going to a summer camp during the summer break. However, Shota warns his students that if any of them fail to pass the end of term exam, they will be stuck in school for remedial classes.
Arc End of Term Examination
When Katsuki enters the hallway, Shota notes that he has gotten worse. On the day of the end-of-term practical test, Nezu reveals that the second A will fight against Yuei's teachers for their test. Shota says that Shoto and Momo will fight against him. Shota tells Izuku and Katsuki that they will be paired against All Might. Shota, Momo and Shoto arrive in an uninhabited city. The trial begins, Shota prepares to leave. Shota appears above Momo and Shoto, hanging from the telephone wires. Shota comes down and Shoto jumps into action, trying to attack Shota but missing.
Shoto orders Momo to run away, which she does. Shota wraps his scarf around Shoto, then hangs him in the middle of the telephone wires, tying Shoto's connections to a telephone pole. Shota admits that he had always planned to capture Shoto. However, Shoto points out his teacher's flaw, that he can free himself from his bonds using fire or ice. Shota tells Shoto that he can break free, but warns him to be careful when he falls, Shota throws caltrops underneath Shoto to act as a deterrent for Shoto. Shoto completes his teacher for a wicked counter. Shota tells Shoto that the responsibility for his strategy is unbalanced, praising him for Momo's consideration, but points out that he should have discussed his strategy with her a little more. Shota chases Momo. He jumps in the air and throws the cloth at whoever wraps his arm around Momo. Momo tries to free herself; she realizes that her Alter has not been erased. Momo creates a bracelet from her bandaged arm, allowing her to free herself; Momo continues to move forward. Shota notes that Momo keeps comparing herself to Shoto because he has what she doesn't.
Shota finds and appears above Momo, preparing to attack her. Momo tells Shoto to close her eyes and she throws the Russian dolls she created for Shota into the air. The Russian dolls open to reveal flash-bangs within them; the flash-bangs create a bright light that prevents Shota from moving forward and using her Alter at the same time. While Shota is distracted by the light, Momo frees Shoto from the telephone wires and Shoto lands safely on the ground. Momo tells Shoto that she has a plan to prevail over her opponent, Shota sneers. Released, Shoto swings her giant barrier but Shota dodges. Shota is still on standby, thinking what to do next.
Suddenly, Momo and Shoto were running while they were coated. Shota attacks Momo and Shoto hidden with his capture weapon. However, it is revealed that what Shota captured was a dummy that Momo was holding. Shota jumps as Momo unleashes his catapult, throws his capture weapon at Shota who surrounds him. Momo orders Shoto to swing the fire sideways on the ground which he does. Momo asks Shota if he knows what nitinol alloy is; it is an alloy that returns to its original form when exposed to heat. Momo explains that the capture weapon she threw into the air around her is made of nitinol alloy. Shoto's attack causes Momo's nitino band to become entangled around Shota, causing her to latch on. Afterwards, Momo and Shoto handcuff Shota, which allows them to pass the practical test.
Arc Summer Camp
Shortly after the Genesis Squadron attacks, Shota rushes out and is ambushed by Crematorium who smothers him in flames. However, Shota dodges and apprehends the villain, demanding information about his teammates. Crematorium's clone turns into a puddle of water, Shota realizes that it is a clone. Shota heads towards the forest.
Izuku and Kota cross the forest and spot Shota. Izuku decides to leave Kota's protection to Shota and goes to look for Mandalay. However, Shota stops Izuku before he can run away, asking Izuku to give him a message, he allows them to fight. This means that the students of second A and B will be able to defend themselves against the Genesis Squadron. Shota realizes that the villains' goal is to target the students and has no choice but to allow the students to defend themselves since the situation is a matter of life and death. Shota decides that he will take the punishment as a result of his authorization and hopes that the students will not get killed.
After Mandalay communicates his message, Shota takes Kota to safety, assuming that Izuku's adrenaline prevents him from feeling the pain of overusing his Alter. Kota wonders if Izuku will be okay, shouting that he didn't get a chance to apologize. Shota tells Kota that Izuku will be fine and advises him to thank Izuku the next time he sees him. Shota and Kota reach the cottage. Shota destroys the Crematorium clone and entrusts Kota's safety to Vlad King. The second A students want to fight, but Shota stops them from doing so because they don't have enough information about the villains. Shota heads to the front lines. Along the way, he helps save some of the B students. The Genesis Squadron attack ends and the summer camp comes to an abrupt end. A day later, Shota and Vlad King are questioned by the police about the events at summer camp.
Arc Raid vs. Alliance of Super-Villains
Shota and All Might go to visit the houses of the Second A. He and All Might visit Kyoka's house, where Kyoka's father is not too happy with the security measures taken by Yuei and has doubts about the school's ability to protect his daughter and if she should move to the high school dorms. Shota recognizes that Yuei has been negligent in her duty to protect her students and promises to correct this safety problem and promises to make Kyoka a good heroine. Kyoka tells Shota to relax because her father has already agreed to allow her to move into Yuei's dorms. After leaving the Bakugo family, he decides to visit the other Second A families by himself while All Might goes to Izuku's house.
Arc Review of Provisional Licenses
Ten days before the start of the second semester, Shota is happy that everyone has arrived safely. He explains to his class that at boot camp, they were supposed to get their Provisional License, but didn't because of the supervillain alliance attack. Shota is disappointed that some of them tried to act as if they had their license like Shoto, Eijiro, Izuku, Momo and Tenya. He tells them that he knows that they were present in Kamino. He also knows that the rest of the Second A, except for Katsuki, Toru and Kyoka, knew about their plan to rescue Katsuki. He explains to them that their actions were covered up but tells them that if All Might hadn't retired, he would have expelled all of them except for those who didn't know. Shota advises them to do it right next time, which will allow them to trust each other more.
Shota then takes them to their new dorm, Heights Alliance. He explains to them that their dormitory is separate from the other classes and is separated into two wings, the right wing for girls and the left wing for boys. However, the second floor is a common area and consists of the dining room, bathrooms and laundry room. The Second A students take a look at their new dormitory and are excited to live there. Shota then explains that their rooms are on floors two, three, four, and five; each student has his or her own room with air conditioning, a bathroom, a refrigerator, and a closet. Shota gives Second A a map of the room layout and tells them that their luggage is already in their rooms. Shota ends his explanation by telling them to spend the rest of the day unpacking and arranging their rooms.
The next day, Shota emphasizes again that the priority of the course is to get their license and makes them understand both the responsibilities that come with it and the difficulty of passing the exam. He then tells them that they will have to create super-moves since the Provisional License Exam is designed to test students' skills such as information gathering, judgment, mobility, leadership and communication in different types of problems. However, the most common skill is combat ability. Shota decides that the remaining ten days of summer vacation he will use to create and develop their special techniques and advises them to consider upgrading their hero costumes. With that said, the class begins training by fighting Ectoplasm clones.
All Might appears at the entrance of the gym, Shota advises him that he should rest but All Might replies that it is his role as a teacher to supervise the training of his students. He gives advice to the students to help them develop their special techniques. Shota is wondering why he is suddenly interested in helping students, when he sees a book coming out of his back pocket about how a person can be a good teacher, much to Shota's amazement.
Four days later, at Gamma Gymnasium and in the middle of training, All Might shows up and Shota Aizawa tells him that Second A is progressing well. However, the rock that Katsuki used to test his Anti-Armor Shot cracks and is about to fall on All Might, when Izuku jumps up and destroys the piece of rock with a single kick, showing off his new fighting style, which he calls One For All: Full Cover - Kick Style. Shota warns All Might to stay away to avoid getting hurt, the ex-hero apologizes to Katsuki.
At some point during the run-up to the licensing exam, the students of Second A find themselves immersed in a ghost story, as they begin to hear strange buzzing and noises in the middle of the night. As it affected his class, Shota finally addressed the problem to try to bring them back to their normal state. During their descriptions, he remembers one of the "Seven Mysteries of the University," where the ghost of a former student who failed to become a hero haunts the campus, which only makes things worse for the students. Shota goes to check out everything that happens that night, not wanting to come across as a "mass hallucination," but also insisting that there be a rational answer to their concerns. He eventually discovered the source of the noise, but because of a wet towel left on the counter, he slipped and hit his head, losing consciousness. A series of events ensues, causing panic among the students, until he finally wakes up and is able to sort things out. He understands that the noise is a floating black orb, designed by Mei Hatsume as part of their "anti-hacking security" to prevent Minoru from entering the girls' bathroom. While everyone is relieved by the results, Shota is furious that they let a ghost story affect them so much, ordering them to write an apology and imposing a curfew for a week.
On the morning of the Hero Provisional Licensing Examination, Second A goes to Takoba National Stadium. Some of them are nervous, but Shota encourages them to do their best to get their license and pursue their goal of becoming heroes. Eijiro gets excited and starts a Plus Ultra song, but he is interrupted by Inasa Yoarashi who appears and sings it himself. One of his classmates tells him that he shouldn't impose himself like that. As the other students of Shiketsu and Inasa leave, Shota explains to them that Inasa Yoarashi is a strong candidate; in the Yuei entrance exam, the same year as Second A, Inasa got the best grade and passed. However, he refused the offer of admission.
Suddenly, a heroine approaches Shota and says that they haven't seen each other for a long time, although Shota seems upset by her presence. She is Emi Fukukado, known as Ms. Joke. She tries to make him laugh and flirt with him, but Shota repels all her advances. When Tsuyu comments on their closeness, Ms. Joke replies that it's because their workplaces were close to each other, they worked together several times and eventually fell in love, but Shota denies it. To get her to stop joking, Shota asks her what she is doing there and she tells him that she is a teacher at Ketsubutsu Academy and that she is there with her students, who are also participating in the exam. Shota tells his students to get ready for the exam and Emi asks him if he warned his students about something that happens every year at the exam, but Shota didn't.
Later, watching from the bleachers, Ms. Joke sits next to Shota and jokes about his fly being down, much to Shota's chagrin, but she quickly changes the subject and notes that she's surprised he hasn't kicked any of his students out. She even wonders if Shota likes his current class.
The preliminary test for the exam begins. Emi decides to bring up the information that Shota hasn't given his class yet, a tradition in which all schools first eliminate Yuei's. Shota feels that it doesn't matter if he tells them or not because it won't change the fact that they will have to overcome obstacles like real heroes have to do every day. He also tells her that the Pros Heroes' Alters are known so his students are in a situation close to the real thing and feels that they are stronger than his.
As the first exam progresses and the number of participants left to pass is announced, Shota is frustrated at not knowing who has passed so far. Shota explains to his classmate that he is not worried but he has high expectations because two of his students (Izuku and Katsuki) have an influence on the rest of the class. Because of their presence, Shota thinks that the second grade should achieve spectacular results, so he has high expectations. He continues to observe the performance of his students from the stands until the exam finally ends. All the students of Second A, except for Katsuki and Shoto, passed and got their provisional license. After that, everyone returns to Yuei.
Later that night, while preparing for the next day's classes, one of the security robots reports a fight between Izuku and Katsuki at Gamma Field and asks him to intervene. Shota leaves his room to go discipline the boys, but before he can go any further, All Might stops him and asks him to take care of it for him. After their fight, Shota restrains Izuku and Katsuki while scolding them for fighting on school grounds. Shota wants to punish them severely for breaking the rules, but Toshinori intervenes and tells him that the reason for the fight was due to Katsuki's guilt about him. Although Shota understands the reasons, he still feels that they deserve an appropriate punishment for their transgression. So he puts them under house arrest; Izuku for three days and Katsuki for four days. During their house arrest, Shota orders them to clean the common areas of the dormitory day and night and that they will have to write an apology note. Shota tells them that if their wounds don't heal, they should go to the infirmary and that they shouldn't dare to think of relying on Chiyo Shuzenji. After scolding them enough, Shota tells them to go to bed.
In the classroom, Shota announces to his students that they will be returning to class. Shota warns them that the training will be harder than last semester. Tsuyu asks him to tell more about the training courses, mentioned earlier by Nezu. Shota complies, describing them as hero activities done off-campus, closer to reality than training at the workplace after the sports festival. Shota adds that the internships are an opportunity to use the connections they gained at the Sports Festival. Students now choose their internship locations because in the past, each office conducted its own recruiting efforts, causing them to compete for students from Yuei. Since most of them have provisional hero licenses, Second A can now participate in formal, longer-term activities. Shota tells them that he expects them to write a report on their experiences but that he will explain later, what they should do. He then leaves his place to Present Mic for his English class after warning them not to say anything to Izuku and Katsuki.
The Eight Precepts of Death
Three days later, just as Izuku's house arrest ends, Shota decides to tell them about their internship. He brings in three senior students, the Big 3. Shota asks the three students to introduce themselves, but each of them acts in a baffling and bizarre way, only succeeding in confusing the students of the Second A, who wonder if they are really the best of Yuei. Mirio Togata intervenes and tries to break the ice with a joke but no one understands it, so he insists that the best way for the second graders to understand what the internship is about is to fight him, much to the surprise of Second A. Shota accepts his proposal.
Everyone heads to the Gamma Gymnasium where Second A (except for Shoto and Katsuki) are all pitted against Mirio. Mirio manages to defeat the long-range fighters and then defeats the close-range fighters with ease. He explains to them that it is thanks to his Permeation and the fruits of his training, hence the importance of the training courses.
The next day, Shota announces that they will be allowed to do heroes' internships in offices that have a good background. Izuku, Ochaco, Tsuyu, Eijiro and Fumikage are the only students who decide to do it.
A few weeks later, Shota is invited to a meeting about the Eight Precepts of Death in the office of Sir Nighteye, the hero who trains Mirio and with whom Deku is interning. Deku, Ochaco, Tsuyu and Eijiro, as well as the Big 3, also attend the meeting, along with many heroes, including Fat Gum, Ryukyu and Gran Torino. Sir Nighteye reveals that he has summoned them to share information and discuss a plan to defeat the Eight Precepts of Death. With the information that all the heroes have provided, Sir Nighteye has made substantial progress in his investigation. He had recently discovered that the Yakuza had contacted the supervillain alliance, although a conflict had broken out between the two groups. In addition, the criminal organization had been selling illegal drugs for economic gain. However, the most alarming thing was that a group confronted by the Fat Gum group used a bullet that contained an Alter Destructive Drug. Tamaki was hit by one of these bullets and was unable to use his Alter for a while, but he was able to recover.
Shota Aizawa explains that Tamaki's Alter injury is different from his Erasure because it does not attack Alters, which are born after the structure of a human body has been specially modified by a Plus Alpha. The Alpha Plus of an Alter is called the Alter Factor. Shota explains that his Erasure momentarily stops the activation of the Alter Factor, allowing him to cancel out the Alters of others; his Erasure cannot damage the Alter Factor. Fat Gum goes on to explain that, thanks to Eijiro, they were able to get another ball with the contents intact. Fat Gum explains that after examining the contents of the bullet, they discovered that it contained human blood and cells, which disturbs Yuei's students.
Sir Nighteye explains that Kai Chisaki, the leader of the Eight Precepts of Death, has an Alter called Overhaul. Kai's Alter gives him the ability to disassemble and reassemble objects. He also explains that Chisaki has a daughter, Eri. She had no birth certificate and details about her are unknown; Izuku and Mirio met her on their patrol and she was wearing a number of bandages. Sir Nighteye explains that Kai is probably using his daughter to make those bullets that destroy the Alters. Izuku and Mirio, frustrated, lament their failure in trying to save Eri, stand up and declare that this time they will definitely save her.
After discussing and clarifying that the goal will be to save the girl, Sir Nighteye ends the meeting. After the meeting, Izuku and Mirio explain to their classmates what happened between them and Chisaki and Eri. Shota locates his students from Second A and tells them about the suspension of their internships since the League of Villains is involved. However, knowing that if he tries to stop Izuku, Izuku will go to rescue Eri, Shota gives Izuku and the others permission to participate in Eri's rescue operation.
After several days of waiting, the operation of the police and heroes is finally organized to make a Police Raid against the Eight Precepts of Death in order to save Eri and stop Overhaul. Shota is part of the main assault group led by Sir Nighteye. At 8:30 am, the heroes and the police force are in front of the Eight Precepts of Death headquarters and begin the operation. Suddenly, they are attacked by Rikiya Katsukame, but Ryukyu's group deals with him while the others enter the mansion. The heroes beat and stop the subordinates who try to stop them until they reach a room that communicates with the underground routes that the Yakuza use to escape.
Sir Nighteye's group heads for the basement but find themselves facing a wall that Overhaul has created with his Alter to block them. The heroes destroy it, but at that moment Mimic, uses his Alter Mimicry to modify the walls and manipulate the underground maze. Fat Gum asks Shota to deactivate Mimic's Alter, but Shota is unable to do so because he can't see his opponent. Mirio decides to continue and go through the walls, while Mimic creates a hole in the floor, causing the heroes to fall one floor, where three members of the Manipulable Eight are waiting for them. Tamaki tells the rescue team that he will deal with the Yakuza alone, while the others must continue the raid. To help him a little, Shota cancels their Alters and knocks out one of them. The group continues to advance along the underground road.
After a while, Shota Aizawa becomes concerned that Mimic hasn't made a single move against them yet and, as he feared, Mimic attacks them again, although this time he directs his attack specifically against Shota, trying to separate him from the group by throwing him into another room, where other Yakuza are waiting for him. However, Fat Gum pushes Shota out of the way and it is he who ends up in another room. He is surprised to see that Eijiro is with him, who was also trying to save his teacher.
Sir Nighteye's group has difficulty to cross the basement because of the interference of Mimic. Mimic uses his Alter to close everything in order to crush Sir Nighteye's group. Shota Aizawa is annoyed that he can't see Mimic's real body. Suddenly, the walls open; Izuku rushes but Shota stops him. Sir Nighteye and a group of police officers are isolated in one space, Izuku and Shota in another and Lock Lock is left alone and is attacked by Himiko Toga. Hearing her scream, Deku destroys the wall that separates them. Izuku and Shota see Lock Lock on the ground and another Lock Lock near him. Lock Lock tells them that an impostor appeared and tried to attack him. Shota quickly realizes that this is a trap. He quickly uses his Erasure on the other Lock Lock as he was ready to stab Deku.
Shota uses his capture weapon on Himiko, but she dodges it, stabbing Shota in the back in the process. Fortunately, the wound is not serious but Himiko manages to escape and Shota blames himself for being careless in not thinking that there would be no casualties and is surprised that Tomura Shigaraki as well as his minions side with Kai Chisaki. Meanwhile, in another hidden space, Twice and a Kendo Rappa clone confront Sir Nighteye, who easily predicts the clone's movements and easily destroys it.
Twice runs away after finding Himiko Toga. The two were forced to work with the Eight Precepts of Death, even though Overhaul had killed Magnet during their first encounter. Nevertheless, Tomura Shigaraki sent them to join the Yakuza because they would have the opportunity to take revenge by destroying them from the inside. Himiko and Twice start to provoke the Yakuza, which makes Mimic furious and causes him to manipulate the maze in a chaotic way. His screams of rage are heard by Shota and Deku, and the latter manages to discern Mimic's location. Izuku activates One For All: Full Cladding - Kick Style and shatters the ceiling. With the enemy in sight, Shota immediately uses his Erasure and Sir Nighteye throws his 5 Kg pads on Mimic's face, knocking him out.
After letting the police take care of their enemy, Sir Nighteye, Izuku and Shota go to rescue Eri. Once Mimic is defeated, the underground labyrinth can no longer be changed. The three men arrive at the place where Mirio, Overhaul and Eri are. As Mirio went ahead of the group to stop Kai, he defeated Shin Nemoto and Deidoro Sakaki, two members of the Eight Bullets and Chronostasis and are fighting Chisaki to protect Eri. However, Chisaki took advantage of Mirio's desire to protect the girl at all costs and had Shin fire one of his destructive Alter bullets at Eri, forcing Mirio to step in and take the bullet himself, which destroys her Permeation. But even without his Alter, Mirio continues to fight and protect Eri for several minutes before being severely wounded by Kai, leaving just enough time for Izuku and the others to arrive in time.
Once the three men arrive at the scene, Shota tells Sir Nighteye to protect Eri and help Mirio while he and Deku confront Kai. The leader of the Eight Precepts of Death tries to use his Alter but to no avail, as Shota has deactivated him with his Alter. Stuck and with nowhere to go, Chisaki calls Chronostasis. Shota notices something approaching them and pushes Izuku aside; Shota's shoulder is hit by a tiny hand emanating from Chronostasis' head, he is then forced to blink due to his injury, which allows Chisaki to use his Alter again, distorting the room they are in, blocking Izuku and Shota.
While Deku and Sir Nighteye fight Overhaul, Shota is taken by Chronostasis to an isolated room, where he is blindfolded. Shota tries to move but the villain explains that it's useless because he injured him with his Alter, making him move slower than a snail. Hari Kurono hit Shota with a hair that slows his movements for an hour. Chronostasis tells him that the reason he keeps him alive is because of Kai Chisaki's interest in his Alter.
Outside, the fight between Deku and Chisaki intensifies. Chisaki uses his Alter to merge with Rikida into a monstrous creature, while Deku, with the help of Eri and his Alter Rewind, is able to use the One For All at 100%. Meanwhile, in the underground, Chronostasis is worried about Overhaul's defeat. Thinking that their drug and serum are more important than Shota Aizawa's Alter, he prepares to execute him.
Fortunately, he is saved by Tamaki Amajiki when he turns his hand into a swordfish and pierces Hari's hand. Tamaki is accompanied by several policemen, who arrest Kurono. Tsuyu Asui appears from behind and asks Tamaki to come with her to the surface and takes Shota with them. Once on the surface, they discover that Izuku has managed to defeat Kai Chisaki with the help of Eri. Suddenly, after the victory, Eri's Alter becomes uncontrollable, which is about to kill Deku. With Tsuyu's help, Shota uses his Erasure on Eri to deactivate her Alter and save Izuku.
The police raid ended successfully, the Eight Precepts of Death were dismantled and all of its members arrested, Eri was rescued, and the police confiscated Overhaul's experiments, including Alter's Destructive Drug and the trigger serum. However, many of the heroes who participated in the operation were injured in the clashes, some seriously, so they were taken to the nearest hospital.
Shota received ten stitches because of Himiko's stabbing, but fortunately his wound is not serious. He goes to see Izuku, who is also fine. While walking in the corridor, Shota apologizes to him for not being with him during the critical moments of the battle before continuing to explain the conditions of the other Heroes. Although of different severity, no one has life-threatening injuries and they will recover in time. However, Shota explains that Eri still hasn't woken up and is currently in quarantine because her Alter is too dangerous and she can't control it.
They meet again All Might, Recovery Girl and a surgeon who gives them bad news: the injuries that Sir Nighteye suffered during the fight against Kai turned out to be too serious and unfortunately there is nothing they can do. Everyone goes to Sir Nighteye's room and they are joined by Mirio. In his final moments, Sir Nighteye bids them farewell and uses his Alter Foresight one last time to look into Mirio's future, assuring him that he will become an outstanding hero. Sir Nighteye passes away peacefully after telling everyone to keep smiling because society needs smiles and laughter to bring a better future.
Some time later, Shota speaks with Mirio and tells him about a possibility that Eri can control his Alter in the future, which will allow him to be able to restore him to a state where he had his Alter. The next day, after seeing on the news that the League of Villains attacked the police escort, stealing the destructive Alter drug and maiming Kai Chisaki, Shota Aizawa tells Izuku not to feel responsible.
Arc Rattrapage
Shota talks with Ochaco, who feels guilty for not being able to save Sir Nighteye's life, telling her that she is in no way responsible for what happened and that the fault lies with the Heroes, he asks her to take some time and think about what she wants to do in the future. Ochaco replies that she wants to save people.
Later, Shota and his students eventually return to Yuei, but he has to go back to the hospital to keep an eye on Eri, as he is the only one who can stop her Alter from going wild. For this reason, All Might and Present Mic replace him to accompany Shoto and Katsuki to the Hero Provisional License course.
In early October, Shota attends Sir Nightteye's funeral, accompanying the Yuei students who participated in the Eight Precepts of Death raid and All Might.
Arc Cultural Festival of Yuei
In class, Shota tells his students that Yuei is going to hold a school festival and that it is sponsored by the other departments in the school, such as the general department. However, Shota points out that part of the festival will be held inside Yuei and asks Second A to choose a program to be presented at the festival. Tenya asks for ideas from Second A; many of them give creative ideas like Denki's cafe or Ochaco's mochi store. Soon, they have many ideas. Before the end of the class, Shota tells them to make a decision before the next day, otherwise the class will have a public lecture.
Shota tells Izuku that Eri asked to see him and Mirio. The two boys visit Eri in the hospital, happy that she is doing well, but from the conversation they have, they realize that Eri is unable to smile. Izuku has an idea and asks Shota if Eri can come to the school festival. Mirio explains to the girl what the school festival is and where there will be many events where people can have fun while tasting delicious food such as candy apples, which catches Eri's attention. Shota agrees with the idea and calls Nezu to get his approval. Later, at Yuei High School, Sekijiro Kan comments to Shota Aizawa about the performance of the orchestra and dance of his students, considering it admirable.
A few days later, while the students of Secondary A are practicing for their performance at the Festival, they receive a visit from Eri and Mirio. Shota Aizawa states that they have received permission from Nezu to bring Eri to the school festival, although he recommends that they show her around first to familiarize her. Eri visits the school accompanied by Izuku and Mirio before returning to the hospital.
On the big day, Shota and Mirio take Eri back to Yuei. Before the festival starts, the three of them go to visit Second A, where they are told that Izuku hasn't arrived yet, since he went shopping and for some reason he was taking longer than he should. Fortunately, Izuku arrives on time.
The performance of the Second A goes on without incident and Izuku's plan is a success, since Eri is able to smile again. After the dance, Shota, Deku, Mirio and the others accompany Eri to enjoy the rest of the festival events until it ends and she has to return to the hospital.
Hero Pro Bow
As November comes to an end, in Yuei, Shota reveals to Izuku, Eijiro, Ochaco and Tsuyu that Eri will be taken care of by Yuei because she has no one who can take care of her and he is the only one who can prevent her Alter from getting out of control again. Mirio will also help her take care of Eri and invites the Second A to visit her from time to time. Afterwards, Shota tells his students to go back to their dorms because they are going to have visitors, who are none other than the Wild Wild Pussycats.
After the Japanese Hero Ranking, the city is attacked by a special Brainless, much more powerful than any seen before and capable of thinking. At Yuei, Shota, along with other teachers, watch a news report about the Brainless attack and are horrified by the fact that it dominates Endeavor. Shota asks Eri to go to her room, so she can't see the violent scene, and orders Number 13 to take care of her while he heads to Shoto's location, worried about how this may affect him.
Shota finds Shoto watching the report with his friends, worried about his father and encouraging him to keep fighting. When Endeavor rises victorious, Shoto collapses to his knees, relieved that his father is still alive. Dabi appears before Endeavor and Hawks, Shota comments on his actions.
Three days later, after Endeavor leaves the hospital, Shota accompanies Shoto home when he gets permission to leave the school grounds and be with his family. Fuyumi Todoroki invites Shota in as well, but he respectfully declines the invitation.
Skills and Competencies
General Abilities : Eraser Head has shown incredible combat prowess and ingenuity, making him one of Yuei's most gifted teachers and a very effective hero. Eraser Head's usual combat strategy is to cancel an opponent's alter and then use his capture weapon in combination with his great agility to easily defeat or overpower his opponents. Even without the aid of his alter, Eraser Head relies on his skill in hand-to-hand combat, excelling in close quarters combat. His overall abilities make him a pivotal fighter in situations where his opponents rely solely on the use of their alters, and by creating openings by wiping out their powers in the middle of battle, he and his comrades are placed at an advantage.
During the SCA Incident he fought against low-level members of the supervillain alliance, who surrounded and outnumbered the hero, dozens to one. Eraser Head dodged multiple attacks of varying sizes and abilities before overpowering them and sending them flying with calculated counterattacks. He was even able to almost defeat Tomura Shigaraki, a very capable villain, before Brainless stepped in and crushed the hero. Aside from Tomura, Eraser Head can effectively fend off high-level villains such as Genesis Squadron members like Dabi and Himiko Toga, though with some difficulty. He also played key roles in the Police Raid against the Eight Precepts of Death and the Jaku Hospital Raid, both of which involved large teams of heroes against elite villains, with the latter raid involving the destruction of various High End Nomus.
Acute Intelligence: Eraser Head has been noted for having observational and evaluative skills. He can easily assess the personalities of his students and their mental state. He is an expert at matching his equipment and alters with each other. In combat, Eraser Head uses goggles in conjunction with his alter to prevent enemies from discovering who he is looking at. He also quickly creates strategies for dealing with different types of enemies, even those who are immune to his alter. In addition, he can meticulously discern the mechanics behind people's abilities after seeing them once.
Alter
Erasing: (抹消 Masshō): Shota's alter gives him the ability to cancel another person's alter by looking at the user. The effects of this alter can still work even if Shota's opponent is out of his field of vision.
After suffering severe injuries to the SCA, Shota cannot use his alter as long and must rest longer between erasures.
Although powerful, this alter has many drawbacks :
- The erasure only turns off if Shota manages to blink.
- His alter gives Shota a dry eye, forcing him to blink more often when he uses the power continuously.
- Mutants are immune to blinking.
- Erasure causes Shota's hair to levitate when he is active, allowing his enemies to see when his alter is active or not.
- This alter has no offensive potential.
Equipment
Eye drops: Shota carries a small green box of eye drops with him. He uses them to treat dry eyes caused by opening his eyes too long.
Ribbons (捕縛武器 Hobaku Buki): Eraser Head's weapon of choice is a steel wire alloy fabric woven with carbon nanofibers.
Eraser Head's Glasses : Eraser Head can be recognized by the golden glasses he wears around his neck, hidden by his scarf. He only puts them on in a fight because they complement Shota's alter. The glasses hide his line of sight, preventing enemies from effectively determining which alter has been erased. He was given these glasses during his school years by Oboro Shirakumo.
Chausse-traps: Eraser Head used shoehorns in the exam against Todoroki and Yaoyorozu, and they were effective when used in combination with the ribbons. After suspending Shoto in the air with the ribbons, Shota threw shoehorns under Shoto so that he could not land safely in case he escaped his bonds.
Knife: Eraser Head has a large knife. It is useful to cut his capture weapon if it gets stuck to something. He can also use it in combat, he used it to cut his leg to avoid losing his alter.
Relations
Present Mic
Shota and Present Mic were classmates at Yuei High School and have been good friends for a long time. Present Mic even suggested the name of the hero Eraser Head for Shota. Although he used it as an example of why his class should be careful in choosing a hero name because they might be stuck with a bad hero name forever, he doesn't seem to care about the name Mic chose for him.
They have contrasting personalities, with Shota being quiet and composed while Mic is very excited and energetic, but they still get along very well, unlike him and All Might.
All Might
Because of their contrasting personalities and the way Shota upset Izuku on the first day of school, he and All Might did not get along at first. All Might disapproves of Shota's overly strict teaching methods while Shota dislikes the favoritism that All Might shows to Izuku.
However, Shota respects his fellow hero who shows him the same as when he saved Shota from the Nomus in the SCA arc. After the Raid Arc against the Super Villains Alliance, when All Might beats All For One and loses the One For All, Shota tries to sympathize by inviting him for a drink one day, implying that the two have found a level of understanding. All Might kindly declined his proposal but offered him a drink after meeting Bakugo's wild family. Shota even advised him to relax and recover now that he was retired.
Sekijiro Kan
They are both colleagues, professional heroes, and tenured teachers in the Hero Department for their respective classes. As Vlad King views the second A's as the rivals of his class, this rivalry extends to Shota, with Vlad acting competitively towards him.
Despite this rivalry, Vlad knows when to cooperate with Shota in serious moments. This was demonstrated during their media encounter, where he was concerned that Shota would get angry, but was surprised when Shota remained calm and accepted the heckling.
Midnight
Nemuri was Shota's senior when he was a student at Yuei. When he was a sophomore, she helped him to complete his work studies with the hero His Purple Highness, forming Team Purple Revolution with Oboro Shirakumo.
Since then, he and Nemuri appear to be on good terms and they often help each other out, such as when he asked her to help his class in areas that he didn't mind. They generally have a good relationship, and Shota doesn't mind Nemuri's "enthusiastic" attitude towards young people, but he gets annoyed when she makes decisions for him without his consent.
This behavior is the main reason Shota is a member of the AU faculty. When Nemuri was personally approached by Principal Nezu for the teaching position, she submitted a recommendation to the principal of Shota, accepted as a teacher, even though he had told her that the idea of him as a teacher was the epitome of irrationality.
Second A
As the homeroom teacher of Yuei Second A, Shota cares deeply about the safety and well-being of his students, willing to sacrifice his own life to protect them from danger. He has very high standards for his students in terms of heroism and pushes them seriously in this regard. Although he rarely praises, he expects great things from each of them and knows when they are doing a good job.
However, he is also extremely strict, and does not hesitate to criticize and reprimand them when they do not meet their expectations or make bad decisions, never pulling his punches with the truth, especially when it comes to pointing out flaws or naivety. His harsh attitude also makes it difficult for his students to determine whether he is sincere in his teaching methods, so when he threatens them with "rational lies" such as expulsions or punishments for forcing them to practice fully, they deceive themselves about him to be serious and naturally be afraid.
Izuku Midoriya
When Shota first meets Izuku, he has no confidence in Izuku's ability to be a hero and intends to "send him away" on the first day of school. Izuku was equally discouraged by him, until he realized who Shota is and became the first in the class to identify him as Eraser Head. Shota takes note of All Might's interest in Izuku, as a result, he considers him as reckless as Izuku. However, when Izuku proves his worth to Shota, he recognizes that Izuku has the potential to become a hero if he can learn to control his Alter.
As the series progresses, Shota continues to view Izuku as a "problem child" because of Izuku's habit of causing trouble and putting himself in danger. However, Shota also shows faith in Izuku's potential and is amazed at his growth and improved abilities. He has recently started to respect Izuku more often, but is still strict with him.
In return, Izuku respected Shota's work as a hero and expressed concern for him when he fought the Super-Villain Alliance and was amazed by his abilities, as he realized that he had underestimated him. However, he was horrified to see him defeated by Brainless and took Shota away.
Recently, Shota took note of Izuku's gradual change and asked him about the phenomenon and got a vague answer.
Katsuki Bakugo
As with Izuku, Shota is rude to Katsuki because of the latter's impetuous and violent behavior. He tends to look at Katsuki more than any other student, curbing his reckless and loud behavior.
During the End of Term Exam Arc, he heard Katsuki's statement to the class and noted that he was getting worse. Shota also paired Katsuki with Izuku to work together and it worked. However, he acknowledged that he had the qualities of a hero when the press asked him about his "villain-like" behavior.
When he met the Bakugo family, he was praised for seeing Katsuki for who he really was and for not overlooking his flaws. During the Joint Training Bow, Shota praised Katsuki for his willingness to cooperate with his team, which led to his victory. Shota expressed his pride in the fact that Katsuki was gradually changing his ways while Katsuki told him not to dwell on it.
Shoto Todoroki
His relationship with Shoto is good. Generally, he doesn't cause her as much trouble as Izuku and Katsuki, although Shota knows that Shoto has his own problems to overcome.
In the end-of-term exam, Shoto was paired with Momo, while Shota was their opponent. During the confrontation, Shota manages to restrain Shoto. He tells Shoto that his plan has imposed too much inconvenience on him and that he needs to trust Momo more. Shoto follows his master's advice, and together with Momo they manage to defeat him.
A few days later, during the Arc Raid against the Super Villains Alliance, Shoto was one of the five students who broke the rules to go and rescue Katsuki. This action earned him harsh criticism from Shota, who said that if it weren't for All Might's retreat, he would have been expelled with the other students.
In the Eight Precepts of Death arc, Shota noticed that Shoto was the only student who chose not to fight Mirio Togata and pointed out that Togata was calmer after failing his Provisional License Exam.
As time went on, their relationship improved. Shota became concerned for Shoto when the fight between Endeavor and Hood was broadcast on television. When Endeavor appeared on the verge of defeat, Shota ran to where Shoto was, concerned about how it might affect him. After Endeavor's victory, he stood over him as he put his hands together as if in prayer, relieved that his father had emerged victorious.
Ochaco Uraraka
His relationship with Ochaco does not go beyond that of a teacher/student. As a teacher, Shota tries to teach Ochaco to be a hero, not hesitating to criticize her harshly when he sees that her performance is not adequate, as he shows when she barely passed her final exam against Number 13.
Likewise, he also tries to encourage and comfort her in difficult moments. After Sir Nighteye's death, Ochaco feels guilty because she thought she could have done much more to save him, but Shota comforts her and tells her that she has no responsibility and that the fault lies with the Heroes, asking her to take time to think about what she wants to do in the future, to which she replies that she wants to save people.
Months later, after saving Izuku in Round 5 of the Common Training, Aizawa recognizes that Ochaco has matured a lot and improved a lot since the last time.
Minoru Mineta
Shota is aware of Minoru's perverse personality, he doesn't even hesitate to describe him as "the embodiment of lust". Although Aizawa does little to correct this attitude, he does not allow Mineta to cross certain lines of human decency, especially when it comes to looking at girls while they are bathing. For this reason, Shota usually warns other people about Minoru's attitude so that they take the necessary measures in this regard, or he becomes intimidating to make sure that Mineta doesn't do anything perverted.
However, Shota also supports and encourages him when he feels overwhelmed by a challenge, such as when Minoru was nervous about the Interim Licensing Exam. Shota encourages him to do his best to pass the exam and pursue his goal of becoming a hero. This both scared and encouraged the boy to do his best.
Neito Monoma
Despite being the teacher of his rival class, Neito shows no ill will to the teacher and shows him respect. Despite this, Shota has shown that he finds Neito's behavior annoying, so he scolds him before Itsuka can and tells him to behave.
During the end of the Common Training Arc, Shota wants Neito to help Eri control his alter. When Neito can't do it, Shota doesn't seem surprised and thanks him for trying.
Hitoshi Shinso
It has been hinted that Shota first noticed Hitoshi during the Sports Championship, due to the similarities in their alters' lack of real-world combat effectiveness. Later, Shota decides to personally mentor Hitoshi to help him transition to the Heroic curriculum, passing on his Ribbon techniques to Hitoshi to improve his combat effectiveness.
They share a student-teacher relationship in a similar way to Izuku and All Might with the same feelings as Izuku after the latter successfully entered the heroic curriculum.
Present Mic suggests that one of the reasons for his interest in Hitoshi's training is that Shota sees his younger self in him.
Mirio Togata
Until the Police Raid against the Eight Precepts of Death, there was little interaction between the two. Mirio respects him as a teacher, and Shota recognizes Mirio as Yuei's most powerful student, considering him the best candidate for Hero Number 1 by counting all the Heroes.
After Eri's rescue, the loss of Mirio's alter, and the death of Sir Nighteye, Shota comforts a bewildered Mirio, promising that he will look for a way to help him get his alter back.
When Eri is in Shota's care, Mirio helps him take care of her and they are often seen together when Eri crosses Yuei. Shota hopes that Eri will learn to control her alter and thus restore Mirio's Permeation.
Eri
Eri was unable to control her Alter after Izuku defeated Overhaul, causing Izuku visible pain. Shota, although injured, was brought to the scene so that he could erase the Alter out of Eri's control. Since then, Shota has been something of a tutor to Eri, sometimes taking over her care while she lives with the Yuei faculty in the dorms. Eri is comfortable with Shota's presence and listens to her well.
Shota bought Eri a matching set of cat-themed clothing while she was in the hospital so that she could wear it when she was discharged. However, it is stated in the manga that the outfit was so ugly that a nurse had to bring Eri other clothes. Shota is known to love cats, which makes this gesture a bit more meaningful.
Oboro Shirakumo
Along with Hizashi, Oboro was one of his friends in the closet while he was still a student at Yuei . They had a good relationship and used to interact frequently, especially after the second year, when Shota started to have serious doubts about his abilities and his future as a hero. Oboro was there to encourage him and help him solve his problems. Oboro used to tell Shota that the only thing he had accomplished with his negative attitude was to psych himself up. Oboro really thought that he was better than he thought, and if he wanted to, he could do anything.
Thanks to Nemuri, the two did their hero work studies at the Purple Revolution Agency, where they show amazing teamwork in dealing with bad guys. It was at one of these moments that Oboro lent his glasses to Shota so that he could protect his eyes and thus, face a villain whose Alter must counter his erasure.
Oboro greatly enjoyed his friendship with Shota and Hizashi, and even proposed the idea that once they graduated, the three would create and organize their own hero agency. Unfortunately, a week later, Oboro died after being crushed by a pile of rubble during a confrontation against a villain, who was defeated by Shota alone. During the fight, Shota heard how his friend was always cheering him on, but after his victory, he discovered that Oboro was already dead before he started fighting, and Sensoji told him that it was likely that he was giving himself a pep talk, and the stress of the situation made him imagine that it was Oboro. Shota, along with Hizashi, mourned the loss of his friend.
Even today, despite the years that have passed, Shota still remembers his former classmate. The present Mic suggests that one of the reasons for his interest in Shinso, besides seeing his younger self in him, is also because of Shirakumo.
Shota is terribly affected when Detective Naomasa and Gran Torino inform him that All For One has stolen and desecrated Oboro Shirakumo's corpse, subjecting his body to several modifications and using it as a base to create the Brainless Kurogiri.
