Shōyō Hinata

Shôyô Hinata is the main character of the series Haikyū!!, written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate. Currently, he is a freshman at Karasuno High School and joined the volleyball team as a center. Before he entered Karasuno High School, he was in Yukigaoka Middle School.

Hinata's dream is to become strong enough to attack with any pass like the "Little Giant". That's why he specializes in jumping to fill his lack of height. He is also Natsu Hinata's older brother.

Apparence

Hinata's height is 1m62 making him the second shortest person in his team after Yū Nishinoya. Hinata has red hair with brown eyes. He is seen mostly in his school uniform which consists of a black jacket and pants with a white shirt. When he plays, he wears the volleyball club uniform which consists of a black and orange t-shirt with the number 10 and the Kanjis of his school, over black shorts.

During matches, Hinata wears her volleyball uniform - a black jersey and matching shorts with white and orange stripes on the sides. On the back of his jersey is his position number 10 (coincidentally, the same number that was worn by the Little Giant) and his school name written in kanji. On the court, he wears knee pads and white volleyball shoes with red stripes.

Personality

Hinata is cheerful and easy going. He always thinks of his classmates before himself and he is an avid Volleyball player. Although his lack of height makes him complex, it is shown that he can jump very high. There are many people who make fun of his height, but when they see his jump, they are impressed.

He makes friends easily and is very sociable. He always wants to attack, "feel the ball in his hands". On the contrary, when he loses he sulks and has to vent his anger. After joining high school, he learned to entrust more things to his teammates.

At first, Hinata was easily agitated before a match because of his lack of experience. He would become so nervous that he would get an upset stomach or need to go to the bathroom constantly. He also becomes clumsy because he would mess up his spikes or receptions. He would only recover after screwing up royally and driving a serve into the back of Kageyama's head. Since he committed the "irreparable" and according to him there is no worse than that, he has not been agitated anymore. As time goes by, Hinata becomes more able to handle the pressure. Although still shy, Hinata has a considerably less severe reaction and can still perform well during matches. Now, he is not even stressed about facing strong opponents but excited to see their talent.

Hinata, like Kageyama, put studies on the back burner because he too is more concerned about volleyball. He once told Sugawara that since he entered high school, he had never scored double digits in any of his tests.

Capabilities

Hinata Shoyo is known for his excellent relaxation and speed. To make up for his small size, he has a very high jump. When he came to Karasuno, he didn't have much technique and only focused on jumping and hitting the ball to score. But, thanks to his teammates and the different trainings he was able to quickly assimilate the basics and learn the basic techniques. He doesn't have much power, so he uses his speed and incredible endurance to his advantage. Hinata is also known as the best striker, since thanks to this asset, other strikers can score and thus make their team win.

History

Hinata was riding his bike when he suddenly stopped in front of a TV to watch a volleyball match of the Karasuno team when he saw the "Little Giant", an incredibly talented player for whom he developed an unwavering admiration. He decided to start a volleyball team in his school, but his teacher told him that he was the only member and that the number of members was decreasing every year. His teacher advised him to go and play with the women's team and the young boy reluctantly agreed, having no other choice. Hinata practiced volleyball in the corner of the room or in the corridors and regularly asked people around him to pass to him. Later, Hinata's classmates heard that he was playing with the girls in the club. Hinata, embarrassed, replied that he was in the boys' volleyball club. Hinata was always alone in this sport, he asked many people to join him, but nobody accepted except two of his friends.0

Later, when he arrived at the competition gym, Hinata was very excited. He thanked his companions for supporting him and following his ambition. Becoming nervous, he was eager to start the match until he realized that his team was going to face Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High School. Hinata felt a chill, which increased when he compared his size to that of his opponents. He agreed that they would win against this school, but became more and more nervous. On the way out, he heard some members of Kitagawa Daiichi High School talking negatively about his team. Hinata advised them not to make fun of them. Kageyama appeared and advised the members of his team not to think that they were better than the others, because they were not even substitutes. After they left, Hinata said to Kageyama that he would say the same thing. Kageyama answered that he knew why Hinata was not taken seriously and also asked why he came here. The young boy answered that he came here to win. When the match started, Hinata and his teammates had a hard time competing against Kitagawa Daiichi High School, but the other school members were impressed by Hinata's jumping height, which was very impressive for his small size. After that, they managed to take some points from the other school (some of them due to the other team's mistakes) but in the end, they lost the match. After the match, Kageyama asked Hinata what he had done during his 3 years of high school, Hinata was hurt by these words and the two of them parted ways.

The number of sets won by Hinata's team was 0 and therefore the match lasted only 31 minutes. Hinata remembered Kageyama's name and his nickname "The king of the court". After that, Hinata saw Kageyama and told him that he was going to overthrow him from his throne. Kageyama said that only those who are strong win and that if Hinata wanted to win, he had to become stronger.

Anecdotes

• His favorite food is Tamago Kake Gohan.
• Like Kageyama, since he was born at the peak, his star sign is unclear; if he was born before noon, he is a Gemini, if he was born after, he is a Cancer.
• Before the final exam at the Tokyo Expedition Arch, Hinata said he never got a double-digit score on any of his quizzes in school.
• Hinata's worst subject is English. His voice actor Murase Ayumu, however, was born in America (Los Angeles) and can speak English fluently.
• When Hinata feels scared or threatened, he instinctively hides behind the nearest person.
• Hinata tends to run into current/future opponents as he heads to the bathroom.
• Hinata is the oldest first-year on his team (Karasuno).
• In contrast, Kageyama is the youngest first-year in his team.
• His birthday coincides with the summer solstice (June 21, the longest day and shortest night of the year) which contrasts with Kageyama's birthday which occurs on the winter solstice (December 22, the longest night and shortest day of the year).
• In a poll conducted by Charapedia, a Japanese database of anime and manga characters that asked people which anime characters they would choose as the basis for their children's names, Hinata came in 8th place with 104 votes among the female respondents.
• Hinata's name has the kanji "sun" and Tsukishima's name has the kanji "moon". This is a reference to the fact that they are rivals even if they are in the same team as well as the idea that Hinata is bright like the sun unlike Tsukishima who is distant and discreet.
• Part of Hinata's first name and part of Kageyama's first name together will form the word "Hishō" (飛 翔), which means "to soar" or "to fly".
• Regarding Hinata's character, Furudate says that they are proud of the way Hinata turned out and claimed that he was designed to have no similarity to his creator.
• Hinata's most hated type of blockage is Issei Matsukawa.
• He failed the English exam because he wrote the answers in the wrong place on the answer sheet. It is suggested that if he had placed them in the correct lines, he might have received a perfect score; as Yachi stated that all his answers were correct.
• Nekomata calls him the kanabo of a demon (iron club).
• Hinata speaks Portuguese and is learning Spanish and English by watching Dragon Ball dub.
• Hinata's favorite character in One Piece is Zoro.
