Shunsui Sōzōsuke Jirō Kyōraku was the 8th Captain of the 13 Divisions and also one of the oldest, graduating from the very first class of the Shin'ō Academy, alongside his friend Jūshirō Ukitake. After the death of his master, Yamamoto, Kyōraku was appointed to take over his vacant role and thus became the second Captain General of the 13 Divisions.

Apparence
Shunsui Kyōraku is a tall, fair-skinned Shinigami with high cheekbones, gray eyes, and long, wavy brown hair. His hair is tied back in a long ponytail and he has long strands framing the sides of his face. He also has extensive hair on his chest, feet and arms. He wears a straw hat (called a sakkat) and a pink, flowery woman's kimono, which he wears over his shoulders and over his captain's uniform. Although his haori and obi are cheap, his windmill hairpins are extremely expensive. He does not wear tabi with his sandals. He has a thin beard around his mouth and on his cheeks. More than a hundred years before Sōsuke Aizen's escape, Shunsui only had a beard on the upper part of his mouth. After the battle with the Vandenreich, Shunsui is shown wearing an eye patch over his right eye that was damaged during the conflict. The upper half of his right ear was severed, which is shown with a scar along his right temple.
As a child, Shunsui had shorter, messy hair, wearing a kimono with a flower pattern.
Personality
Kyōraku is a casual and colorful man, something evident by his style of dress and general demeanor, rarely being shown without a smile. In his spare time, he drinks sake in bars and takes naps. He likes the steamed buns that go with sake, but does not like powdered green tea. Other times, he will enjoy chasing women, especially his Lieutenant, Nanao Ise, whom he calls "my Nanao-chan" as well as his former Lieutenant, Lisa Yadōmaru. Kyōraku tends to use a more casual style of language than the other captains. He generally addresses his fellow captains and Shinigami by their first names followed by an honorary title. Captain Kyōraku wrote a romance novel titled "The Pink Path," which was published in the Seireitei Communication, but is really not very popular. Kyōraku has not received a single fan letter or birthday gift from his readers, but he does not mind at all.
Kyōraku is a peaceful man who will always try to find a way out of a fight, even if he doesn't want to insult his opponent by refusing to fight him. Kyōraku seems to enjoy making an impression on his opponents. Even though he tries to avoid fighting, he will do so when the situation calls for it: which is seen in his battle with Coyote Starrk. When the latter requests that they only pretend to fight, Kyōraku declines the offer, although he states that he would prefer to do the same. He maintains a level of honor and integrity when engaging in combat. He refuses to fight with children or even fight in the presence of a child. He always maintains a level of respect for his opponent, is polite in a combat situation and prefers to fight one on one. When fighting powerful opponents, such as Starrk or Aizen, he rarely loses his temper, even chatting and joking with the opponent.
Despite being one of the strongest and oldest captains, Kyōraku maintains a spirit of humility and is not arrogant about his strength, knowing that Tōshirō Hitsugaya has the potential to become stronger than him in a few hundred years. Kyōraku has shown a great distaste for fighting, telling Love Aikawa "It doesn't matter who started it: once the war starts, both are at fault." He also dislikes taking the life of an innocent person, as when he left Chad alive when Nanao proposed to kill him.
Synopsis
Arc de la Soul Society
Shunsui appears for the first time during the emergency meeting of the Captains ordered by Captain-Commander Yamamoto. However, he doesn't say anything at that moment, and remains silent throughout the constant argument between his colleagues.
Shunsui is among the first captains to meet the Ryokas. He crosses Yasutora Sado in his division. So, he falls on the ground from a roof in the middle of cherry tree petals flying in the air (currently thrown by Nanao), and gets up to announce his name to Chad.
After his flashy entrance, Kyōraku sits down and tells Chad that he doesn't like to fight, so he offers him a drink, something to which Chad responds with a violent "No," since minors are not allowed to drink, which Kyōraku eventually admits is a problem.
Chad therefore decides to politely ask the captain to step aside, since he too wants to avoid a fight between them. However and despite the mood and the fact that he doesn't like to fight, once Chad starts, Shunsui shows that he is not just a fool, but rather someone to be taken seriously. He deflects Chad's first attack with one arm, and then avoids all the attacks that will follow one after another. Trying to stop Chad from going any further, he asks him why he keeps fighting and for what reason. Despite his attempts, Chad continues to attack him. Seeing his determination, Shunsui reluctantly decides to hurt him, even though he tells Chad that he plans to kill him, having no choice. Pulling out his two swords, he watches Chad rush at him, then avoids his attack and strikes a blow.
At the same time, the news that Sōsuke Aizen has been murdered arrives and Nanao informs her captain. Examining Chad with her eyes, she realizes that he is not dead and asks to finish him off. Arresting him, Shunsui says that the Ryoka may be the murderers, but they are not sure, so they should question him. He then asks her to send some healers from the Fourth Division to treat Chad.
Later and just before Rukia's execution, a stressed-out Nanao finds Kyōraku on a rooftop, chewing on a blade of grass. Asking him to hurry up, Nanao gets annoyed when Shunsui tries to joke with her again. Then, becoming serious, he asks her what he should do. She then tells him that no matter what, he will always do what he wants. All she can do is stay behind him out of trouble. Shunsui sighs and says, "Well, it's going to be me getting into trouble with Yama-jii (Yamamoto) again. At the execution, after Ichigo Kurosaki stops the Sōkyoku when he is about to execute Rukia, Jūshirō Ukitake appears with a shield bearing the seal of the house of Shihōin and with him, Shunsui destroys the Sōkyoku. After all the ruckus, they are all shocked when they see Ichigo destroy the rack that holds the Sōkyoku in place. Then Ichigo engages in a fight with Byakuya Kuchiki, after defeating three lieutenants. Trying to help her sister, Kiyone Kotetsu rushes towards her and is followed by her colleague Sentarō Kotsubaki. Kiyone is then stopped and beaten by Soi Fon, and when Ukitake runs to them to stop the captain, he is in turn stopped by Yamamoto.
Yamamoto gravely declares that what they did is beyond any punishment and that they don't know what it means. Shunsui, realizing what is about to happen, grabs Ukitake and escapes first, closely followed by Nanao. Ukitake then asks Shunsui to release him, wanting to save his subordinates. Shunsui tells him not to worry, because they already have to lead the fight somewhere else, so that Yamamoto's power doesn't cause too much damage, but also because someone else came to help them.
Heading to a deserted corner, they reach a place and face Yamamoto. When Nanao is almost choked by Yamamoto's spiritual pressure, Shunsui cuts the eye contact and takes her to a safe place thanks to Shunpo, then is back under Yamamoto's compliments.
After a brief exchange of words, Yamamoto pulls his Zanpakutō from its sheath. As he begins to blaze away and release the Shikai from his Zanpakutō, he asks them to do the same, since otherwise it would be a shameful death. So Shunsui and Jushiro engage Yamamoto in combat, from which a huge explosion will result.
During their fight, they receive news from the Fourth Division Lieutenant, Isane Kotetsu, announcing that Aizen was in fact a traitor, forcing them to rush to Sōkyoku Hill. After Aizen manages to escape, Shunsui is later seen joining Rangiku Matsumoto and Izuru Kira for a drink, and Rangiku tells him that Nanao is looking for him and that if she finds him drinking with them, she will fight them all off.
Arch of the False City of Karakura
He fought Stark, the primera espada, and killed him after a long fight, using all the properties of his shikai (Stark himself admitted that his power surpassed his own) with difficulty but without taking out his bankai, Ukitake having asked him not to do so, his destructive power being supposedly too great. He was totally powerless against Aizen, and beaten without difficulty.
Arc of the Arrancars against the Shinigami
When Aizen and his army invade the fake city of Karakura , Shunsui asks Ukitake who he thinks is the strongest of the Espada. When Yamamoto decides to remove Aizen and the other deserted former captains from the equation so that the Espada can be dealt with first, Shunsui yells at Ukitake to get down when he realizes that the captain-commander is releasing his Shikai. When Ukitake questions the need for this level of power, Shunsui tells him that he assumes it just means Yamamoto is not in a good mood. During the battle against Arrancar, Shunsui competes against Espada Coyote Starrk. Although Kyōraku agrees with Starrk's attitude and tells him that he too would have preferred a "fake" fight, he also says that avoiding the fight is not an option this time.
He then takes notice of the fight between Rangiku Matsumoto, Momo Hinamori and Tier Harribel of Fracción, asking Starrk if they should also put on a show. Starrk is not amused by Shunsui's attempt at humor and flatly refuses to fight. Starrk states that none of them are fighting at full strength anyway. Starrk then notes how Shunsui's short sword is always sheathed. When Shunsui explains why, Starrk further notes that Shunsui is obviously ambidextrous and is stronger with his left hand than his right, so Starrk doesn't quite buy his excuse for his alleged lack of use of his short sword. Shunsui is somewhat impressed by Starrk's observations and comments about how he thought he had corrected his strength difference. Shunsui then proceeds to attack Starrk which Starrk then dodges. Afterwards, Shunsui surprises Starrk by switching hands in the middle of the attack and correcting his swing, making his right hand strength match his left. After Starrk comments on the change, Shunsui asks him if he would take the fight seriously if he drew his short sword, to which Starrk comments that Shunsui is already strong enough and wouldn't want him to use his short sword.
Shunsui is able to deduce the ranks of the first three Espada by sensing their battles. He says that Starrk's female ally ( Harribel ) is the third strongest, and it would be easier for him if the old man (Baraggan) was the strongest, which implies that Shunsui thinks differently. Starrk then says he is sorry to disappoint him as he takes off his glove and reveals the number 1 tattoo on his hand. Shunsui smiles and comments that it wouldn't be too easy.
Shunsui seems to be on par with Starrk as he doesn't seem to show any form of difficulty in the fight. The Primera even comments that he is surprised that Shunsui was able to dodge his attacks "without losing his hat and kimono". A thin trail of blood, however, drips from Shunsui's head, probably from the slight cut on his bamboo hat. As the battle progresses, Starrk fires a Cero at Shunsui, who is surprised by the lack of a pose. Starrk then begins to show irritation as he berates Shunsui for not running away before looking in shock at the cloud approaching Hitsugaya.
Starrk then looks at Baraggan Louisenbairnbeing "hit" by Suì-Fēng's Bankai and looks towards the ice obelisk that imprisoned Harribel and asks Shunsui if all of their Bankai are that powerful. Shunsui answers with a smile and calls them their secret weapons. Starrk asks if his own Bankai was more powerful than Hitsugaya's. Shunsui then replies that although he is unsure, in a hundred years, it is possible that Hitsugaya will become more powerful than him. Starrk then deduces that currently, Shunsui is the strongest; realizing what Starrk is about to do, Shunsui throws his pink kimono to Ukitake. When Ukitake wonders what Kyōraku is doing, Shunsui responds by saying that he thinks Starrk finally wants to fight for real, which Starrk confirms by saying that he wants to see Shunsui's Bankai. He then sheathes his Zanpakutō and calls Lilynette over. He explains that he and Lilynette are one and the same. While other Hollows split their power into their sword and body, they split into two bodies instead. He also reveals that once they become one, their full power would be released. With this, Starrk releases his Resurrección form while Shunsui releases his Zanpakutō Shikai.
Shunsui attacks Starrk as he speaks, to which Starrk easily backs away. Starrk begins to comment on how Shunsui would attack while he is speaking, but before Starrk can finish speaking, Shunsui uses his Bushōgomatechnique. Starrk parries the attack and fires a big Cero with one of his pistols. Starrk then tells Shunsui that he looks a little panicked and that this is very unlike him. Shunsui replies that he intended to kill him on the first try, but his release must be really something if he could parry it. He then deduces that Starrk's gun is firing at Ceros. Starrk confirms, but completely denies that he can do anything else when Shunsui asks him if he is capable of anything more. Shunsui accuses Starrk of being a bad liar, to which Starrk says the same thing about Shunsui. Starrk then tells him that he made him drop his "Resurrección butt hurt", so he better show him his Bankai. Shunsui mentions that he has no intention of showing him, no matter how strong he's gotten, especially if he's just going to fire Ceros.Cero Metralleta at Shunsui, to which he quickly walks away . Starrk shoots again and tells him that he can not escape. Shunsui dodges, exclaiming how unfair this attack is. Ukitake jumps in front of Shunsui after unleashing his Shikai and cancels the multiple Ceros with an explosion of his own.
Shunsui starts to speak, but Ukitake cuts him off by explaining that he shouldn't complain because the Arrancars are overtaking him and that his coming to his aid is only fair. Ukitake then comments that apart from that, Shunsui doesn't seem to want to use his Bankai. Shunsui assures him that he will eventually do it. But Ukitake says that he shouldn't use it in the open where anyone could see it. Ukitake goes on to say that his powers are better suited for this kind of fight anyway. Starrk interrupts by asking Ukitake how he pulled a Cero. Ukitake makes it clear that he can figure it out if he does it again. Determined to discover Ukitake's power, Starrk fires again, despite Lilynette's protests that it's probably a trap. They engage in some mutual attacks, to get closer to Ukitake and explain what he has learned about his ability. Ukitake is surprised to have understood it after only three attacks. Starrk then expresses that he is happy that Ukitake's power does not reflect any attacks against his opponent. Starrk surmises that if Ukitake must absorb the attack first, then there must be a limit to what can be absorbed. He then tells Ukitake that he doesn't think he will be able to absorb the attack if he fires 1,000 rounds at a time.
Before Starrk can fire, Shunsui appears behind him and tries to cut his head off, but Starrk dodges and fires a large Cero which Shunsui also dodges. Starrk explains that such actions are not like him, to which Shunsui replies that he shouldn't pass judgment because he is the one who is not acting like him. Starrk's simple answer is that he thought they were both similar. Then seemingly out of nowhere, a Garganta begins to open up, surprising the three fighters. Ukitake asks Shunsui if it's someone new. Shunsui asks in response if Ukitake thinks there is someone who could support the first three Espada, as he hopes that is not the case. When the Garganta is completely open, Wonderweiss Margelatraverse. Ukitake and Shunsui wonder who he is, while Starrk speaks his name, equally surprised to see him here accompanied by Hooleer.
While Ukitake's attention is on Hooleer, Wonderweiss attacks him from behind, impaling him in the back and through his chest with his hand. Seeing this, Shunsui goes to attack the Arrancar, but is quickly shot at close range by a Cero in the back by Starrk, with both captains falling to the buildings below. However, Kyōraku appears to be largely unharmed as Lisa Yadōmaru points out, patting him on the head and asking how long he planned to play dead. Kyōraku then compliments Lisa and says he is glad she is okay.
As Starrk is about to finish Love and Rose, Kyōraku stabs him in the shadows. Kyōraku was actually hiding in the shadows thanks to the ability of his Zanpakutō. He then explains his Zanpakutō's abilities, denying Starrk's accusation that he was hiding his powers; stating that his Zanpakutō wasn't in the mood for this game before and that although he loves his sword, he is very selfish and doesn't like to play with it because he shakes it. He then fights Starrk using a new color-based game that ends with Kyōraku mortally wounding Starrk, targeting his black hole Hollow after calling the color black .
As the dying Starrk falls, Love appears behind Shunsui and thanks him. Shunsui responds by saying that he is just glad they are safe. Love then tells him that he never changes; always getting into other people's fights and that he has no style. Shunsui returns his Zanpakutō to its sealed state and tells Love that "only underlings get caught up in matters of style" and that a captain cannot afford such indulgences. He goes on to state that "If you owe someone or they owe you, the moment you start fighting, you're wrong anyway."
Shunsui later joins the remaining unoccupied Shinigami and Visored to plan to protect Ichigo Kurosaki from Aizen and his Shikai. As Hitsugaya attacks Aizen, Kyōraku attacks his flank with his Shikai, but hits a barrier, which cracks slightly. When Aizen tells Hitsugaya that it is good that he does not attack alone, Shunsui accuses him of calling Tōshirō a coward. Shunsui later attacks Aizen while he is talking with Hitsugaya, but Sōsuke avoids the attack and complains that he interrupted their discussion. Kyōraku responds that he is not very good at hearing when a man is talking, as just listening is annoying. When Hitsugaya activates his Bankai and declares that he intends to violently cut and crush Aizen, Shunsui tells him not to rush.
Aizen then seriously wounds and sends Love, Komamura, Rose and Lisa. Shunsui is then confronted by Suì-Fēng, who creates clones of herself and charges. When Aizen tries to attack, he finds his arm encased in ice. Suì-Fēng is able to hit Aizen with Nigeki Kessatsu , but it is ineffective as Aizen comments that although her technique is interesting, her Reiatsu would overwhelm her attacks and powers as a battle between Shinigami is one of the Reiatsu. However, Aizen is surprised when he is attacked by a shadow. Shunsui turns out to have used his Kageoni technique, saying that Aizen is careless because there is a shadow on the ice. Shunsui then watches Aizen being crossed by Hitsugaya. To the shock and horror of Shinigami and Visored, it is then discovered that Aizen had already used his Kyōka Suigetsu to trick his enemies by stabbing Momo Hinamori instead. As Hitsugaya goes to attack Aizen in a blind rage, Shunsui and the other captain-level warriors are distracted while trying to stop him. Aizen proclaims that they are all wide open and proceeds to slaughter Shunsui, Shinji, Hitsugaya and Suì-Fēng. As they fall into the town below, Aizen declares that he will not kill them and that they must watch the outcome of this battle.
Ten days later, after Aizen's capture and Shunsui's complete recovery, he is called in with Byakuya and Kenpachi to discuss the loss of their captain's haori with Yamamoto. While the captain-commander is furious about the loss, the captains are indifferent to the issue. Shunsui's only complaint about it was that he thought the haori was nothing more than elegant, which makes Yamamoto all the more angry.
Arc of the Millennial War of Blood
Shunsui attends a captains' meeting, where he is informed of the Vandenreich's invasion, and is ordered to prepare for war alongside the other captains. When the Vandenreich invades the Soul Society, Shunsui is one of the first captains to confront the enemy, having released his Shikai.
After hearing that the Sternritter's ability was to steal the Bankai, Shunsui addresses his opponent, Robert Accutrone, stating that usually they rely on the expertise of Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi, but considering that there is no opponent that can be defeated without Bankai, sooner or later there will be someone who will have to make a sacrifice. Without answering, Robert approaches him and draws his Spiritual Weapon, a pistol, and shoots his hat, which makes him fly in the air. He then appears behind Shunsui, releasing his Vollständig for a moment, and shoots Shunsui in the right eye. Shunsui manages to get out of the way and tells Robert that he got him, and admits that he is nervous. When he feels Yamamoto's spiritual pressure coming on the battlefield, he tells the Sternritter that it's like the Captain-Commander is berating him for having problems with his opponent, and that he didn't raise him to be a coward.
Shunsui hurts Quincy with an attack, to which Robert states that while it is admirable that his motivation is back, Shunsui is underestimating them, since the Captain-Commander is going to be beaten by their leader, and they won't be the only ones encouraged by seeing their leader fight. However, Shunsui retorts that such logic doesn't work with Yamamoto, when at the same time a huge explosion occurs further away, to the Sternritter's great surprise. Later, noticing that his lips are chapped, Shunsui concludes that Yamamoto has activated his Bankai. After Yamamoto's death, Shunsui shouts his name only to be immediately fired upon by Robert, who then brings in several soldiers.
Shortly after the battle, the surviving captains are gathered to mourn the loss of the Captain-Commander. After receiving a report on the status of Kenpachi and Byakuya, they quickly fall into a mess of confusion, until Shunsui arrives, revealing himself to be almost unharmed. Calming them down, he reminds everyone present that the Gotei 13 was not created to mourn all the losses, but to protect the Soul Society. Shunsui and the other captains are later found outside the Seireitei. When Ichigo Kurosaki asks where the Royal Guard is usually located, Shunsui explains that they stay at the Spirit King's palace. He then points to the sky and announces their arrival, explaining their mode of transportation, as well as the power and base of this unit. Shunsui notices that they have not changed and asks why they are there, only to learn from Ichibē Hyōsube that they have come to rebuild Gotei 13 and take Ichigo, Byakuya, Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai to the Royal Palace.
Some time later, Nanao Ise arrives to speak to her captain. He doesn't react when she knocks on the door and when she tries to reprimand him for not answering, he interrupts her. He tells her that this may be the last time they see each other and reveals that he has just received a letter promoting him to the rand of Captain-Commander of Gotei 13 and Captain of the First Division. Kyōraku simply stares out the window, expressing disbelief at the promotion.
Kyōraku then meets with the House of 46, telling them that he will have two lieutenants, with Genshirō Okikiba taking care of the financial part, and Nanao staying by his side as an escort. He explains that this will be the most efficient way to do things, and that they can support both. The House of 46 will initially refuse, but Kyōraku reminds them that it was their own rule to allow a captain to choose his lieutenant. This causes them to fall silent. Kyōraku then states that his first act as Captain-Commander is to teach Zanjutsu to Captain Kenpachi Zaraki. The House of 46 is shocked and Kyōraku explains that even though Captain Byakuya Kuchiki and the others are recovering their strength at the Royal Palace, they have no way of knowing if they will return in fighting condition, and furthermore, Zaraki's powers are more than important in this battle and they cannot continue to waste his potential.
The House of 46 is outraged, fearing that Zaraki's powers are becoming far too strong, pointing to the fact that if he were to revolt, he could go on a rampage and devastate the Soul Society. They then remind Kyōraku that even Yamamoto tried to teach him, but stopped after just one day, also fearing his potential. Kyōraku is undeterred and so he asks them what other options they have to save Soul Society, since in this current state they will not survive a second invasion, even going so far as to ask them if they are simply capable of protecting themselves. Kyōraku takes the silence of the House of 46 as confirmation to let him have his way. He then invites Captain Retsu Unohana to get going, telling her that he will send Zaraki to her, since she is the first Kenpachi.
As the two Kenpachi start their fight, Shunsui thinks about his decision to let them fight while he is sitting in his office. Remembering Unohana's past, Shunsui thought seriously that there will be only one survivor of this training.
Some time later, Shunsui visited the Human World to meet Tatsuki Arisawa, Keigo Asano and Mizuiro Kojima. Recognizing him as a colleague of Ichigo and as a captain of Gotei 13, he announces that he came to see them to talk about their last chance to say goodbye to Ichigo. When Keigo asks if he's still trying to scare them, Shunsui states that he's not here to make jokes, and he confirms Keigo's fears that Ichigo is once again involved in Soul Society affairs. Once back, the Vanden Reich invades the Seireitei completely and Haschwalth decides to fight him. After two barriers produced by Nanao Ise, Haschwalth decides to use force but Yhwach calls him back and he leaves. Later, during the Auswahl of Yhwach, he decides to go to the Royal Palace. He goes to the Royal Palace modified by Yhwach and decides to attack Lille Barro with his shikai and the game "One, Two, Three, Sun" Japanese version. After having pierced Lille with Kageoni, the latter opens his left eye to deploy his Vollstandig and pierces Kyôraku. After Lille, Kyôraku uses his Bankai, Katen Kyôtotsu: Kuromatsu Shinjuu. Lille feels that his spiritual pressure had increased to the point of deploying his Bankai and decides to shoot him but he realizes that he is receiving injuries. Kyôraku explains to him that this is his first act: Would Sharing Hesitation which passes on the user's injuries to the opponent. Kyôraku then uses the second act: The Pillow of Shame. This technique contaminates Lille with a black reiatsu and Kyôraku uses his third act: LifeLess Abysses which empties the reiatsus of both opponents.
Ten years after the defeat of Yhwach, Shunsui is sitting around Ukitake's grave, drinking Sake and remembering how Gotei 13 was able to fully restore itself after being destroyed 10 years ago. Later, he introduces Rukia Kuchiki as the new captain of the 13th Division.
Skills and Competencies
Kyôraku is one of the oldest and most powerful shinigamis; he has held his position for 210 years or more while most have only held it for 100 years. He is one of the few captains that Yamamoto recognizes as gifted. Kyôraku has a very good command of Shunpo and Zanpakutō. His Shunpo allows him to move Nanao away from his combat zone and then return to it almost instantly, which earned him praise from the captain-commander. He is very proficient with the Zanpakutô as he faces Stark with his shikai while all the other captains faced an Espada with their bankai.
- Master of sword fighting: Kyôraku is one of the most powerful captains and therefore he masters sword fighting well, which he proves by cutting Sado with one blow. He was also able to fight the 1st Espada with a sword in his shikai form while the other captains were all using their bankai. He claims that he only uses his wakizashi in situations where it becomes difficult with his katana. He is ambidextrous and can therefore switch his hand blade. He strikes with a little more force with his left hand but still uses his right for balance.
- Great strength: Kyôraku shows his strength in his fight against Chad where he deflects all his energy balls with one finger. He also shows during the fight against Aizen that he can crack one of his shields while Ichigo's getsuga tensho didn't make him a scratch.
- Master of Shunpo: His Shunpo is powerful enough to take Nanao away from the battlefield and return almost instantly. Yamamoto congratulated him for this feat. He was able to fight Stark with the Shunpo without dropping his hat or kimono.
Zanpakutō
Katen Kyôkotsu (花天狂骨, Flower Sky, Split Bone): His Zanpakutō is unique in that it exists as two
completely separate swords, as a pair of Daisho swords (samurai's arsenal, consisting of a katana and a wakizashi). Their guards are rectangular, with cut corners, decorated with cherry blossom petals and lines, and each sword has a dark blue handle. He wears them at his waist by his belt on the left side, although during some battles the swords were shown placed on both sides of his belt. Like all Zanpakutōs, Katen Kyōkotsu has a personality of her own; however, unlike them, this personality stands out in battle and prevents Shunsui from fighting at full strength until Katen Kyōkotsu is in the mood for it. For this reason, Shunsui does not like to "play" with her.
-
Shikai: To free Katen Kyôkotsu, Captain Kyôraku utters the following poem, "Let this wind of flowers howl the divine wind, let this heavenly wind snicker the hell! " (花風紊れて花神啼き天風紊れて天魔嗤う, Hanakaze midarete, kashin naki, tenpū midarete, tenma warau ). Kyôraku places the two blades against each other, forming a cross, and withdraws them after declaring the liberation poem. A dazzling light then appears,
and when it disperses, Katen Kyôkotsu has become a pair of huge black Dâo (single-edged Chinese sword), very curved and with silver edges. The hilt and tsuba of each have not changed and are therefore identical to those of the sealed form, but both swords now have long red tassels swinging from the end. Despite the shape of the two swords being identical in this state, Shunsui stated that they still function in this way: one (the wakizashi) is used mainly for speed attacks, and the other (the tachi) is used for power attacks. Thus in Shikai they still exist as a pair of Daisho swords, the former wakizashi being slightly smaller in size than the former tachi.
-
Shikai Techniques: Katen Kyōkotsu's power is to "make children's games real". This Zanpakutō sets the rules and anyone exposed to his spiritual pressure is forced to fight with them, including Shunsui himself. According to him, "Win, and you live; lose, and you die".
- Bushōgoma (不精独楽, Indolent spinning top): Shunsui spins around, the two blades pointing in opposite directions.
- opposite directions, creating two large wind blades attacking Katen Kyôkotsu's opponent. The wind blades join together to form a swirling circle of wind, enveloping the target with a tornado when it comes into contact with it. The attack is not only dangerous but can disorient an opponent, trapped in the tornado. This technique is powerful enough to counter powerful Ceros. The child's game that Bushōgoma represents is the game of spinning top.
- Takaoni (嶄鬼, Mountain Demon): This technique was used in Shunsui's battle against Starrk, but he dodged or countered each time so its nature is still unknown. However, Shunsui later explained that with this "game", "He who is highest wins".
- Kageoni (影鬼, Shadow Demon): The rule of this game is that whoever steps on their shadow "loses". The game itself allows competitors to maneuver the shadows to their advantage. For example, Shunsui has demonstrated the ability to hide in shadows by employing this technique, and he can also employ them to hurt an opponent by attacking the shadow where they are currently standing.
- Irooni (艶鬼, Colored Demon): This is a color-based game; the rule is to say out loud the name of the color you want to hit with your sword, and then you can't attack anything else. If the one you declare is not present on you, the damage will be minimal, although the blow you inflict would normally cause a much more serious injury. The opposite is true: when declaring a color you are wearing, the damage is proportional to the amount of that color on you. To increase damage, you must use a color that maximizes risk, for the opponent as well as for you. For example, by using the all-black shinigami uniform and declaring "black", the damage inflicted will be massive on the struck enemy even if the blow is actually minimal, but the attacker may also suffer serious damage if the attack backfires.
Daruma-san ga Koronda (だ る ま さ ん が こ ろ ん だ, The Dharma Doll has fallen): After Shunsui or his opponent is marked, the other fighter walks towards them on a Reiatsu trail left by their attack to catch them by surprise. However, if the fighter who is "it" sees their opponent while moving, that opponent loses and dies as well. The game that represents this technique is Daruma-san ga Koronda, a Japanese children's game similar to green-red fire. - Kageokuri (影 送 り, Shadow Sending): By staring at his shadow enough, Shunsui or his opponent can project an afterimage in a different location; the higher your opponent's Reikaku, the more realistic the afterimage will appear. The game that inspires this technique is the Japanese game, Chiichan no Kageokuri, where children stare at their shadow on the ground for several seconds before looking at another surface, allowing them to see an "afterimage" of their shadow.
- -123 Suns- Shunsui uses reiatsu to throw himself on the enemy which looks like teleportation and combines it with another ultra fast shunpo technique the enemy thinks he sees several Kyoraku's doubles.
- -Hado 78 Zangerin- Kido technique combined with his shikai launches a destructive kido blade.
- Bankai: Katenkyôkotsu Karamatsu Shinjû. (The suicide of the two lovers under the dry pine) is revealed for the first time in chapter 647 when he faces the Stern Ritter Lille Barro. Ukitake warned Shunsui not to use it "where others could see it". It is albiente becomes dark and people around him feel chills, as it happened with ichigo and his friends. The bankai of Shunsui is broken down into several acts, as in a play:
- Ichidaime: Tameraikizu no Wakachiai (一段目 躊躇疵分合, The first act "Hesitation to the sharing of wounds") , the wounds that the enemy suffers , will also appear on your body as if shared , here the enemy is designated as Kyoraku , who suffers wounds so reflected against Lille Barro .
- Nidanme: Zanki no Shitone (二段目 慚愧の褥,The second act "The pillow of shame") , The story of a man filled with regrets after being injured in battle , his sorrow turned into an incurable disease.
- Sandanme: Dangyo no Fuchi (三段目 断魚淵, The third act "Lifeless Abyss") , just Sunshui and his opponent , until one of them has no reiatsu left.
- Shime no Dan: Itokiribasami Chizome no Nodobue (〆の段 糸切鋏血染喉, The last act "Final act" , the cruelty of a woman's love symbolized by a white thread of regret "Scissors with a sharp thread over a bloody throat" cutting the throat of the enemy and exploding it.
- To note that No Captain Shinigami or Arrancars Espadas would have survived his Bankai after the last Act they would have died more throats and head after the explosion of the last Act, but he never used it because it would have knocked out or even killed the people with too low amount of reatsu compared to him.
Futility
- Kyoraku's name is sometimes romanized as Syunsui Kyoraku.
- While Shunsui is his first name and Kyōraku is his last name, the full name is Shunsui Sōzōsuke Kyōraku no Jirō. Kyōraku no Jirō means "second son of the Kyōraku family" while Sōzōsa means "the helper who hides everything" or "the helper who owns everything."
- Kyōraku is the only known Shinigami to carry a Zanpakutō that exists as two completely separate swords in both sealed and Shikai form.
- His theme song, chosen by Tite Kubo, is "Por una Cabeza" by Carlos Gardel.
- His and Jūshirō Ukitake's Zanpakutō have the longest known release phrases to date.Word for word, Ukitake has the longer of the two, although the translation in the French version of the English manga shortens it and lengthens Kyōraku's.
- In popularity polls, Kyōraku was ranked 29th in the first, 36th in the second, and 17th in the third.
- His Zanpakutō, Katen Kyōkotsu, was ranked 33rd in the Zanpakutōs popularity poll, tied with Orihime Inoue's Shun Shun Rikka and Nelliel Tu Odelschvank's Gamuza.
- He is a member of one of the four noble families
- The Women's Shinigami Association has published a collection of Kyōraku photos, under the title of "Using Arms as Pillows." It quickly sold out, partly due to the fact that fewer copies had been published than similar collections by other captains. Kyōraku is unaware that there have been no reprints.
