Son Gohan is one of the main protagonists of the manga Dragon Ball and its animated adaptation Dragon Ball Z. He then returns as a secondary protagonist in Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball GT.
Son Goku and Chichi's first son, his power potential far surpasses his father's and he will fight alongside the protagonists from a very young age. Major asset of the team which notably defeated Cell, he stopped training seriously after 7 years of peace and gradually disappeared, concentrating on his scientific work and his family life with his wife and daughter. However, he remains present during major battles such as the threat of Majin Boo or the Tournament of Power.

Apparence
Gohan changes considerably in Dragon Ball, he is introduced when he is only 4 years old and we will follow him from his young childhood to his adulthood. However, he still keeps some common features throughout the series. Gohan has black hair (often in battle) and black eyes. He also has the lighter complexion of his mother, rather than the light tan of his father.
When Gohan is first introduced, he wears a kind of yellow jacket with green sleeves in Chinese style. On the center of this jacket is a red kanji on a white background and circled with red. The kanji represents his family name. He is also wearing a red hat, also in Chinese style, reminiscent of those worn by the ancient Chinese emperors. On this hat, there is the Dragon Ball with 4 stars (Sû Sinchû) to which Gokû attaches a lot of importance because it is the only memory of his adoptive grandfather who died.
During the first part of Piccolo's training (his survival in the desert) and after the defeat of Raditz, Gohan wears a fighting suit similar to the one of Goku with the difference that the symbol will be the "MA" that Piccolo Daimao, Piccolo's father, used to wear.
After a training with him, he will wear a fighting suit similar to Piccolo's with a kind of white scarf. Against Vegeta and Nappa, not having cut his hair, he will wear it long and in battle.
However, Chichi will cut his hair before his departure for Namek. So during the Namek Saga, he will wear a "bowl" haircut and a Namek outfit as a testimony of his great respect for the one who became his mentor and friend, Piccolo. However, he will change his fighting clothes after having fought Captain Ginyu who took possession of Goku's body. Vegeta will give him a Saiyan battle armor, which is similar to the one he had when he arrived on Earth. Gohan will keep this armor until Freezer and Cold return to Earth.
After that, Gohan will continue to wear clothes similar to Piccolo's until the end of the Cell Game with some minor variations (like the shoes during the Artificial Human Saga or the top of the outfit (besides having the same cape as Piccolo) during the Cell Game) with one exception, during his training in the Hall of Spirit and Time, Gohan will wear an outfit resembling the Saiyan armor he had on Namek, minus the shoulder pads.
However, the outfit he will wear during the Cell Game will be an exact replica of Piccolo's except for the turban. It is Gohan himself who will ask for it, still admiring his first mentor.
At the beginning of the Boo Saga, Gohan alternates between the school uniform of the Orange Star High School and his Great Saiyaman costume and a blue fighting suit again similar to Piccolo's. However in addition to the blue color, his shoes and belt differ from his mentor's.
When Gohan will go to the Kaioshinkai, Kibito will give him clothes similar to his own but when he will leave, once his potential is completely released, Gohan will ask Kibito for a fighting suit identical to his father's one to honor him and fight in his name.
Concerning his hair, it will be much shorter and as if raised up with sometimes a lock falling on his forehead.
At the end of Dragon Ball Z and in Dragon Ball GT, his hairstyle will be similar to the one he had in the Boo Saga. As far as clothing is concerned, having retired from fighting and martial arts, Gohan will often be dressed either in a turquoise blue jacket, shirt and tie as well as dark blue glasses or a dark blue sweater, a white T-shirt and turquoise blue pants having become a teacher. But at the very end of Dragon Ball GT, he will put back a fighting suit identical to the one of Goku.
Personality
In many ways, Gohan is the exact contrast of his father Son Goku. Naturally fearful at the beginning of the manga, he hates violence and fighting, only accepting to fight in extreme danger. Nevertheless, he has kept from the Saiyan the ability to multiply his strength under the effect of rage. In fact, he is the most characteristic representative of this ability, his strength fluctuating greatly depending on the situation. Many times in the story, his power will increase in a brief and brutal way under the effect of anger, reaching its paroxysm during the fight against Cell. Largely dominated by him, he let himself be overwhelmed by rage when Cell attacked his friends and blew up the head of cyborg N°16. He then had a kind of trigger. His strength, which had suddenly become excessive, allowed him to send his opponent to the mat with a powerful Kame Hamé Ha.
Gohan is perhaps the character who has the most difficulty controlling the flow of energy and violence that invades the body of the Saiyan when they transform. In the fight against Cell, his personality is deeply altered by the transformation, to the point that he takes pleasure in making his opponent suffer. In comparison, Goku's mastery of the different stages of transformation seems perfect and he uses them as simple fighting techniques without his behavior being affected.
Gohan is very close to his mother, who pushes him to study hard in order to become a famous scientist. His relationship with his father, on the other hand, is much less intense but will be too much hindered by fighting and death. Only the year spent in the Hall of Spirit and Time as well as the 10 days before the Cell Game, will allow Gohan to have a real father-son relationship with Gokû. He will also get very close to Piccolo during his youth, the latter becoming for him a mentor, a friend and even a substitute father to make up for the repeated absences of Gokû. When Goku sends his son to fight Cell, Piccolo, though very hard and not used to emotional outpourings, will be indignant about Goku's attitude and will be sentimentally much closer to Gohan than him. Piccolo and Gohan will always remain close. He will be the only one to really move Piccolo who will even sacrifice his life for his young pupil.
For the rest, Gohan is also very friendly with the other heroes, like Kuririn or Yamcha. He will never fail to help anyone.
Son Gohan's potential today
During the revival of Dragon Ball, through the movie Battle of Gods and the series Dragon Ball Super, the role of Son Gohan will decrease at first. Becoming the leader of the earthlings in the fifteenth movie of Dragon Ball Z, the scenario will reveal that Son Gohan has lost a lot of his abilities and can no longer reach the stage revealed by Ro Kaio Shin.
The Dragon Ball Super series will shamelessly humiliate the character through Freezer and Tagoma. This correction inflicted to this character will not be without positive effects since the character will train even if he is put aside during the Champa tournament.
However, the popularity of the characters through Dragon Ball Super seems to be considerably accentuated on Son Gokû and Vegeta, while Son Gohan remains in the background. The best proof of this is probably the Battle of Gods arc, especially in the movie, where Son Gohan's potential is supposed to be higher than Vegeta's at that moment. This feeds several frustrations to many fans. Nevertheless, the scriptwriters do not forget the character who returns to the charge in the arc of the survival of the universe, offering Son Gohan the opportunity to return to his best level. Son Gohan will therefore be the brain of the team and will have to make correct strategies to offer the victory to his team.
It is also worth mentioning that in the manga, Akira Toriyama considered several times to pass the relay "father to son" and this from the part of the dreaded Saiyan, in which Son Gohan could probably have become the hero. The part where Son Gohan becomes Great Saiyaman in the manga (from volume 36) is unfortunately a fiasco and the Japanese fans ask for Son Gokû's return.
Moreover, when Son Gohan came back to the front of the stage through Rô Kaïô Shin (the elder of the Kaïô), it was Toriyama's editor, Fuyuto Takeda, who suggested not to eradicate the threat through this character, aware that it would be the last part, it was indeed necessary to make Son Gokû come back.
Following these numerous attempts to make Son Gohan come back as the hero of the manga, the new orientations of the manga are more interested in Son Goku and Vegeta, it is however not uncertain that this situation is irreversible.
Skills and Competencies
As the story progresses, Son Gohan acquires transformations.
Son Gohan is the second to reach this form at the end of the training with his father. Much more powerful than the Super Saiyan 1 and without any notable handicap, this transformation allows him to keep his calm and to stay serene so his energy is saved. The impact on the body of the Saiyan is also less violent.
Son Gohan is the first to reach this form at the end of the Cell saga, much more powerful than the Super Saiyajin 1 and the Super Saiyan Full power. His power increases drastically, his hair stands up and his energy becomes electrified. With this transformation, he easily stands up to Cell's last form. However, this transformation makes him lose his mind because he can't control his anger anymore. Gohan becomes cruel and merciless towards Cell. He will use this stage again during his meeting with Kibito during the Tenka Ichi Budokai.
In this form Son Gohan managed to overcome his limitations. It was Rou Dai Kaio Shin, the elder of the gods, who released Gohan's potential as a sign of gratitude for freeing him from the Z-Sword. This deployment of potential will be commonly referred to as "Ultimate". With this transformation, he managed to literally crush Super Boo.
Son Gohan attains this form in the arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes. In this form, Son Gohan is able to use the Kyūkyoku Ryū Shō Ken. He attained this form from GDM5. This form also appears in Z-help in the Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden 1.10 update.
