Apparence

Tao Ren

Tao Ren was shorter than Yoh and most of his friends, but he seems to look taller when the tips of his purple hair (a hairstyle called "Tongari") are added. He has a relatively thin but muscular build with visible abs. Ren's eye color is golden yellow in the 2001 animated series. However, in the manga color page series, they are usually golden, brown or the same color as his hair color.

His casual clothes were his school uniform; black short pants, a tucked-in white shirt, a yellow school jacket, a dark green tie and a pair of brown leather shoes. Like Yoh, Ren wears his school clothes as casual attire during the second rounds of Shaman Fights. On a trip to America, Ren started wearing long pants and a yellow scarf and since his old jacket was worn out, his mother gave him a new one similar to it.

When he left for America, he also brought with him a new combat uniform, inspired by kung fu cloth. The pants and vest are black and both have a triangular pattern with a yellow lining, and the pants are tied with a white silk belt. The vest also has an opening in the back depicting his Tao tattoo. Although he brought it with him before the Shaman Fight began, he never wore it during the fights in America because they were all so sudden that he never had a chance to change.

In the seven years that passed, he reluctantly grew up and his long hair was braided into a three-piece Tongari. As an adult, he usually wears a black suit with a purple shirt and a yellow tie.

Personality

Ren is serious, logical and quite aloof. He strives to maintain a tough and confident exterior, but deep down he would risk his own life for his allies. Ren is a particularly impatient person with a short temper and is not afraid to hurt the source of anger. Because of the way he was raised among corpses and spirits, he began to apply the survival of the fittest rule as a way to defeat death. He also believed that his guardian ghost, Bason, was only meant to be used as a tool and that treating him as a friend would only result in the spirit gaining a considerable advantage over him. Ren's anger and hatred came from his father Tao Yúan. Forced to train and study at a very young age, Ren was robbed of his childhood and thus hated his father for all his suffering.

Ren is a selfish person and generally doesn't care if people think he is too proud. He even named his own team, Team "The Ren", much to the displeasure of his teammate, Usui Horokeu. In addition, Ren is also very intuitive, quick-witted, sometimes quite stubborn, and he can also be very defiant. He rarely listens to what anyone says or takes instructions from them. Before and during the process in which he befriended Asakura Yoh, he was even bold enough to disobey his father on several occasions.

As Shaman Fight progresses, Ren begins to trust others even more. Of all his friends, his bonds with Chocolove and Horohoro seem to be the strongest even though Ren often fights with Horohoro. However, after Ren is fatally impaled by Peyote Diaz, it becomes clear that they really care about each other, as Horohoro has been doing his best to protect Ren until the others can help him..

Capabilities and powers

As a normal human being, Ren has a very strong body as evidenced by his hard and constant training. He is very skilled in martial arts and sword fighting, in addition to learning techniques by simply watching them as he was able to learn many of Asakura Mikihisa's techniques simply by experiencing them first hand, and also by learning to use Over Soul by simply seeing. Chrome uses his. It is mentioned that Ren is skilled in more than one area of combat and is a powerful shaman capable of feats that most shamans his age could not do, such as looking straight into the heart of the Great Spirit without fainting, a feat only a handful of shamans could do.

Ren became one of the five elemental warriors and adapted his Furyoku to that of lightning, giving him the skills to move and attack in a flash. While making her way through the plants, Kyōyama Anna examined Ren's and the others' Furyoku values. There, it is revealed that her Furyoku level is about 100,001.

Weapons

At the beginning of the series, Ren fights with the Basontou, a guandao that Bason used to wield and that had been passed down in the Tao family for generations. Ren used it both for his Hyōi-Gattai and later as a support for his first Over Soul. During the second round of Shaman Fights, his guandao was incinerated by Asakura Hao, but Ren later wielded another one, during his fight with Nichrom.

The Bâo-Lèi sword is a silver sword and the most precious heritage of the Tao family. It was given to Ren by his father. After Asakura Hao incinerated his guandao, Ren switched to the Bâo-Lèi sword. With this sword, he created two new Over Souls the "Super Bushin" and the "Bushin Fish Fin".

Spirit

Bason is the guardian ghost of Ren. A fierce warrior from the era of Kublai Khan, Bason has always served the Tao family, even now after his death. When Ren used the Bâo-Lèi sword as a means for his Over Soul, it increased Bason's strength several times and transformed him into a Seirei class spirit.

Ren used his first Over Soul for most melee attacks and then created the Super Bushin who was able to use Bason's military experience to create dozens of different weapons to overwhelm his opponent. Ren's third Over Soul with Bason, the Bushin Fish Fin, allowed him to generate lightning and electricity to either strike from the sky or channel through his over soul in close combat.

After becoming one of the five elemental warriors, Ren gains the Thunder Spirit, which according to Pascal Avaf, follows the path of Taoism.

After the battle against Xingtian , Tao Ching issued the Four Perils for Jun and Ren, hoping that the siblings would handle the spirits together.

Coming to Tokyo

Ren came from China to Japan to fight Asakura Yoh and take his guardian ghost Amidamaru, because he wanted to become Shaman King and needed many strong spirits. There, he met Manta when Manta was coming back from cram school through the graveyard and told Manta to pass the message to Yoh that he would take Amidamaru. He was then spotted by Manta and Yoh in front of a restaurant surrounded by a gang he had offended. The gangsters attacked him but Ren showed his immense strength by defeating them quickly with Wushu without the use of his guardian ghost. However, when one of the gangsters tried to run him over with a car, Ren unleashed Bason and executed Hyoui-Gattai, easily cutting the car in half and destroying it. Not so satisfied, Ren decides to kill the gangster but is stopped by Yoh, who tells him "that's enough." Ren tells Yoh that humans deserve to die by cutting their hearts out just for fun and that when he becomes the shaman king, he will purify the world. He adds that to do this, he needed many strong spirits and asks that Yoh gives him Amidamaru. Yoh also refuses, declaring that Amidamaru was his best friend, and Ren faces him in a battle. However, the fight is equal until Ren, excited by Amidamaru's strength, applies a 100% acceptance, the ability to attract all the spirit's strength in the world, as Ren claims, and succeeds in dealing a fatal blow to Yoh. Yoh, however, manages to get up after Ren declares that the spirits were mere tools and that becoming friends with them would only make them take advantage of the shaman, telling Yoh that Amidamaru was his friend and further adding that he would rather send Amidamaru to heaven than give him to Ren, where he would be treated as a mere tool. This angers Ren and he charges Yoh, determined to kill him, but Amidamaru protects Yoh with his body. Ren is surprised by this, however, he doesn't care about Amidamaru's action and uses 100% acceptance again to hit Yoh. Yoh, however, also applies 100% acceptance, much to Ren's shock, and the two clash in battle, with Ren being defeated. After his defeat, Ren stays in an abandoned Chinese restaurant that he bought from its last owner, still angry at his first defeat and ruminating on his loss when he acquired Amidamaru, which he thought was Bason's fault. determined to kill him, but Amidamaru protects Yoh with his body. Shaman fights in Tokyo

During the qualifying rounds of the Shaman tournaments, Ren was tested by the Patch Chrom. Easily learning to use his Over Soul and hit Chrom, Ren was not satisfied and furiously attacked Chrom, killing him in the process. After that, Ren arrogantly declared that no one could doubt his new abilities now and left the stage laughing at what he had done.

When Yoh was about to be attacked by Johann Faust VIII's 12730 kilogram skeleton giant, Ren intervened by destroying the skeleton giant with a single kick, not wanting his next opponent to be killed, and to show Yoh his Over Soul. At this point, he revealed that he had already won a fight, which meant that he would have to win against Yoh to move on to the tournament, as the time left in the Shaman Fight preliminaries was running out.

Three months later, Ren and Yoh meet again, ready to fight. Remembering his last humiliating defeat, Ren tells Yoh that he will soon become an obstacle, but Yoh laughs and says that he too could not afford to lose. Ren gets off his horse and tells Yoh that shamans like him are not even worth a fist, but Yoh ignores this comment and points out that Ren has grown a little taller, which makes him even angrier. Believing that Yoh was treating him like a fool, Ren went straight to attack Yoh with his new oversoul as soon as the battle started but Yoh protects the attacks. Ren commented on Yoh's new Over Soul and charges Yoh with incredible speed. After surprising Yoh with his barrage of attacks, Ren goes behind Yoh and hits him. Yoh, however, manages to block Ren's blow with his back facing him, shocking Ren. Amidamaru reveals that Yoh could only do this because he had his eyes and Yoh hits Ren, sending him flying. Ren is not hurt and it was revealed that he didn't even use 1/10 of his power. Ren rushes at Yoh who just manages to defend himself but is sent skyward by the impact created by Ren. Ren then got on his Over Soul and attacked Yoh in the air, which Yoh managed to block just in time. Ren contemptuously asked Yoh if he had thought his attack would end there and summons a gigantic Bason fist, which slams Yoh to the ground. Yoh uses his Over Soul to break the fall, but Ren starts hitting him again and again, breaking Yoh's Over Soul. Yoh deduces that he should create a superior soul that could overcome Ren's in order to defeat him but refuses to do so because he didn't know how to do it. Amidamaru starts to worry but Yoh assures him. After hearing Yoh's words. Ren attacks Yoh again with anger with his Over Soul. Amidamaru, however, manages to counter and penetrates Ren's Over Soul, causing his disintegration.

Asakura Hao

Irritated that Yoh managed to counter his attack, Ren launches another Over Soul, but Yoh, at Amidamaru's words, leans to the right and passes right under him, managing to dodge the attack. This further irritates Ren and he attacks Yoh again, but Yoh dodges it again and appears behind Ren, asking him where he was looking before he attacked and broke Ren's Over Soul. Ren then asked Yoh how he managed to avoid all of his attacks, but Yoh reveals that he was hit and that including his previous attack, it would have been four times for him and seven times for his Over Soul. Silva reveals that Yoh's Over Soul managed to defeat Ren because Ren was too distracted by his anger to notice that his attacks had worked. He adds that Ren, who had full confidence in his power, remembers his reason for becoming Shaman King and decides to end it all. He uses all his power and places the spirit of Bason's horse inside his personal horse, Hei-Tao, and places all his spiritual power inside Bason, completely materializing his entire upper body. He tells Yoh that the world he was aiming at and the weight he was carrying was something he couldn't even comprehend. He prepares to strike Yoh and Yoh, knowing that he could not avoid him, does the same with Amidimaru, and the duo clash, creating a huge cloud of dust that engulfs them. As the dust clears, Ren's Over Soul is revealed to have disappeared completely and Ren realizes that he had indeed lost. Yoh, however, reveals that his Over Soul had also faded long ago, prompting Ren to fall off his horse. The two begin to bicker and Silva steps in to stop the argument, announcing that the fight ended in a draw. Ren angrily asked how they should count the outcome of the fight and Goldva suddenly appears, stating that both had advanced to the preliminaries.

Ren then attends the opening ceremony of the Grand Shaman Fight and is then persuaded by Usui Horokeu to attend a gathering at Yoh's house. The next day, Ren leaves for China and tells Yoh that he had only one goal in mind - to defeat him with even greater power than his own and leaves.

As Ren befriended Yoh and the others, Ren wished to abandon his hatred so that he could continue his life and so returned to China to defeat his father. There, he and Bason encounter an army of Jiang Shi warriors made from corpses freshly killed by Yúan. Ren quickly crushes all the Jiang Shi with a small major problem until his father appears, which Ren didn't notice until he announces his presence, and welcomes him home with a Furyoku blast. Yúan says that he expected his two children to revolt against him. Two Jiang Shi bring Tao Jun and what is left of Pyron. Yúan then takes Ren back and throws him into Tao's dungeon to be tortured for ten days. Jun bemoans his misery but Ren quotes Yoh's "It will be alright" to calm Jun down.

Yoh finally arrives in the dungeon area and frees him. Ren tells the reason why he has to do this in that he has come to defeat the evil within himself. The two Jiang Shi who control the torture area come and they both kill the Jiang Shi. They go back upstairs and find Yúan's last bodyguard about to kill Horhoro and Ryu. The Jiang Shi goes behind the two and hits them with one of Pyron's moves. However, Manta discovers that the last Jiang Shi was actually Pyron's dead master. The Jiang Shi reveals his face to them, then Ren says that Yuan has probably placed the ghost of the master in a new body. just then, the Jiang Shi goes behind Yoh but Pyron stops them. Jun and Pyron shoot him by cutting him in half. The gang advances and meets Yúan himself.

Ryu and Horohoro cut Yúan's arms but they grow back and they are slammed. Ren attacks Yúan but only dismembers him and Yuan still lives. Yúan attacks Ren and Yoh takes the blow. Pyron kicks Yúan in the head but Pyron is then thrown into a wall. Ren starts to listen to his father a bit but knows that he is only doing this because he is weak. The gang gets up and faces Yúan. Yúan is surprised that they do this for Ren and he gets angry. Yúan attacks but he crosses Ren revealing that the father they knew was an Over Soul. Yúan reveals his memorial tablet armor and forms a dragon. Ren on the souls and defeats Yúan. This finally allows Ren to come out of his hatred and try to do something good for a change.

Ren's mother and grandfather appear and manage to stop Yúan from going any further. They invite the gang to dinner and they are happy to go. Ren tells his family that he has to leave and that he can't stay any longer because of the shaman fight. They leave and Ren wins the Bo-lei sword from his father. His father tells him to be safe and Ren promises to be in the unlimited lands of China.

Ren is then seen at the shaman's gathering at the military base. He eats some food provided by the Patch. The gang takes a break and meets Hao. The Fire Spirit then attacks Horohoro and Ren catches him. He attacks Hao in turn but is stopped by the Fire Spirit. Ren boards the plane and when he disappears Ren explains that the test is not about how the shamans fly but if they can stay calm under pressure. Meanwhile, outside the sky, the group feeds their souls and touches down.

Travelling through America

Ren, Yoh, Ryu and Horohoro landed on Route 66 safely and Ryu summoned Billy Anderson to the nearest town. Ren, Yoh, Ryu and Horohoro met Lilirara and witnessed Patch Hao's past. He met Lyserg Diethel the next day. Lyserg then gives a full introduction about himself and asks to join the group, to which Yoh suddenly greets him politely with the shock of Horohoro and Ren. After a brief debate about him by Horohoro and Ren, Ryu shockingly notes that Horohoro addresses Lyserg with "he" and asks if Lyserg is a guy to which Lyserg drops his pants, causing them all to panic as Lyserg removes his pants. up. as Lyserg then explains his dowsing abilities, and then he reveals his guardian ghost Morphine.

After a fight between Lyserg and Horohoro, Horohoro prepares his snowboard for an attack on Lyserg, at which he shows his Over Soul and hits Horohoro, who barely dodges. Suddenly appearing in front of Lyserg, Horohoro reveals his own Over Soul, but suddenly the Pendulum Over Soul appears next to him and suddenly the tip of the pendulum is right in front of his face. Ren prepares to cut the wire with his own fully charged Over Soul, but Lyserg easily neutralizes Ren and Horohoro by cutting them with the wire and crushing their mediums.

The group will later meet Boris Tepes Dracula and the rest of Hao's followers at the entrance of the Patch Village. Ryu finally defeats Boris and the group then meets the X-Laws who killed Boris and easily defeats "Big Guy" Bill Burton . They are about to kill Bill when Yoh stops them and in gratitude, Bill shows them the rest of the way to Patch Village.

Shaman Fight Second Round

When Ren entered Patch Village with a power increase, but unlike other people, he actually looked straight into the Great Spirit without passing out. Chocolove McDonell met with the group and explained the team stipulation to Ren. Ren quickly formed his team with himself, Chocolove and Horohoro. He named his [[Team "The Ren"|team "the Ren" without telling his team anything. They were paired with Hao's team "Tsuchi-Gumi". Chocolove handled most of the battle. When Chocolove ran out of power, Ren took over by beating the team in one shot. Hao talked to Ren after Yoh's match and destroyed Ren's guandao.

Ren didn't like the idea of being trained by Yoh's father so he fought him but was knocked out and in the process revealed his new sword Bao-Lei Over Soul. Hao's followers attacked and Chocolove and Horohoro held them back for a while. Ren decided to enter and fight. He did so and was winning when Peyote Diaz, wanting to take revenge for earlier, pulled out his "Great Fantasma" operating system and impaled Ren with the small knife he was carrying. Chocolove and Horohoro quickly rushed in and sealed Ren's massive wound.

Yoh arrived and defeated Hao's followers. Yoh had made a deal with Iron Maiden Jeanne to revive Ren in exchange for Yoh's withdrawal from the tournament. Jeanne arrived and after preparing a ceremony, had Shamash kiss Ren, bringing him back to life, although he was completely disgusted by it.

Invade the plants

Ren and the group enter the volcano factory and confront Magna. Magnascope attacks and they both use Over Soul. Magna crushes Jeanne's Iron Maiden but there was nothing inside. Ren on the souls and hits Magna with the full force of his lightning-based attacks.

Magna, however, uses the Patch Song and prepares to kill. At the same time, both fighters were constantly dodging or blocking each other's attack. Suddenly, a large amount of smoke blows between them, something Magna uses to suddenly disappear and hide from Ren. Suddenly appearing to hit Ren, Ren disappears before he can make a clean hit. Ren reappears in a flash behind Magna and explains how he had become as fast as lightning. Suddenly, Magna realizes that he needs to warn Nichrome about this, but is killed with a huge bolt of lightning allowing Yoh and company to move on to the next factory.

When Ren and the three remaining teams reached the 7th factory in the cave, they find Nichrom who quickly revealed his psychic and spirit and Over Souled Yellow Whip . He urged the group to attack him together, but Ren only revealed his old weapon and urged him to attack him alone. Nichrom attacked Ren with the scorpion tail, only to have the tail wrap around Bason's arm and be used to slam Nichrom to the ground.

Ren continued to use 100% Hyoi Gattai, to quickly attack Nichrom with Zhong Hua Zhan Wu, leaving him in a bloody mess and his cape in tatters. Nichrom slowly got up and in a state of madness, tried to attack Ren again, to which Ren easily grabbed the scorpion's tail by the broad himself. Ren then told Nichrom to fight with all his might or die. Taking Ren's words, Nichrom throws off his tattered cape and reveals a new Over Soul on his legs, made with the spirit of Purple Kick. Nichrom thanks Ren for his words and reveals that with this new Over Soul, he gains incredible speed and is able to appear behind Ren and then punch him into a wall.

Using the speed, Nichrom charges towards Ren and grabs him with the claw of his Yellow Whip Over Soul while piercing him in the gut with the broad of his scorpion tail. Nichrom reveals to Ren that his body is dying from a poison that will not go away while he is still alive. Seeing that Nichrom is now doing all he can, Ren prepares his own Armor Over Soul and the two have one last confrontation. The result of the fight is not seen, but as Ren is later seen being patched up by Asakura Yoh using the spirit of Johann Faust VIII, it would seem that Ren was the winner.

The group then heads to the 8th Ocean Factory, where the patch officiant, Thalim, is waiting for them. Thalim greedily reminds them of the tip Yoh gave earlier at the Patch Cafe and they apparently have a friendly conversation. Ren is however unperturbed by all this and quickly on souls his Armor Over Soul and attacks Thalim with "ElecBang" only to have it blocked by a gigantic tree that suddenly grows around Thalim. Thalim reveals that Ren's lightning is largely ineffective against him as the tree would only disperse the electricity into the ground. After Horohoro also fails against Thalim plants, but Ren and Horohoro are bound by Climatic Over Soul of Thalim. Thalim is finally defeated by Chocolove when he learns the power of erosion.

As the group finally arrives at the 10th and final "Plant of the Universe", they realize that there is no oxygen or gravity and begin to wonder how they are supposed to fight there. At first, Lyserg suggests that they all protect themselves with their own personal operating systems, but Ryu suddenly interrupts and suggests that they all use his "Yamato No Orochi OS" heads so that the others can fight at full power. While Ren questions the responsibility he would suddenly have, he says that he also wants to be useful because the seven are currently his best place. Even though they are able to fight at full power, they are still defeated by Rutherfor until Yoh cancels his Over Soul.

When Hao finally wakes up, he sends a message to the Oracle Bells that reads "so small". He arrives at the final plant and effortlessly kills everyone with a single glance, except for Rutherfor, Opacho and Yoh. After Hao tries to banish Yoh from his area in the Great Spirit Ren, Lyserg, Chocolove and Horohoro appear there, along with the Five Great Elemental Spirits. A fierce battle between the 5 elemental warriors and the shaman king begins.

In the end, Hao reveals that he was simply preparing for their end and used the Great Spirit to destroy a sun and create a black hole that almost sucks in the Five Warriors until the Soul Train arrives and anchors everyone. Hao is finally discouraged from his plan to destroy humanity when his mother arrives and everyone is sent away

Funbari no Uta

After the tournament, Ren studied at Tsinghua University and after graduation, Ren, along with Bill Burton and Hang Zang-Ching, formed the Leidi Group, starting as a large electronics manufacturing company. The company would eventually grow into a conglomerate with Ren as CEO. He met Iron Maiden Jeanne while she was traveling in Europe, eventually marrying her and together they had a son, Tao Men. After giving birth to Men, she took maternity leave and left Ren as head of X-Charity.

When Horohoro, Chocolove and Lyserg arrive for their reunion with Yoh and Anna, they all suddenly notice the appearance of a carriage. As a little boy got out, Ren complained that Tokyo was always messy and no matter where you went, there were always crowds and traffic jams, unaware that he himself had caused the crowds and traffic. Seeing the resemblance, Horohoro, Lyserg and Chocolove all thought the little boy was Ren until Ren himself got out of the car and picked up the child announcing that the boy was his son, Tao Men.
