Apparence
Tengen is a very tall and broad man, with a bulky muscle mass and slightly tanned skin. His hair is white and uneven in length, with the longest strands reaching his shoulders, and is topped with three shorter, more noticeable tufts arching to fall like bangs between his eyes and on either side of his face. He has fairly thin brown eyes that seem to slant inward, each with a long, flowing lash on the other side of his face.
During his days in the demon slayer army, Tengen wears a sleeveless, dark turquoise version of the standard demon slayer uniform, as well as a burgundy cloth wrap around his calves where his hakama pants fit and white strappy sandals. He also wears two thick gold rings around his upper arm and what appears to be a pair of blue fingerless gloves, secured around his middle finger with a band of white and his wrists with another set of thinner gold rings, this time with two on each side. In addition to this, Tengen sports a white headband that covers her hair, leaving only a thin ponytail visible to fall behind her head between her layers, which is adorned with a large band of pale gray decorated with six light pink gems, three large and arranged in a line, and three small and arranged in a triangle at the far left. A chain of smaller, pale blue gems hangs from each side of this headdress, framing his face, and he also wears what looks like red eye makeup around his left eye, consisting of alternating large and small dots that run inward, his eye.
After his retirement from the demon slaying army due to the injuries he sustained during his fight with one of the Higher Rank 6 demons, Gyutaro, Tengen changes his appearance to coordinate the loss of his eye and his left hand. He now wears a long cyan yukata and a black haori, and replaces his old head covering with a dark eye patch adorned with what appears to be the remaining gems from his old hairstyle, letting his hair fall freely over his shoulders.
Personality
Tengen is an eccentric and flashy individual, always wanting to be "flamboyant". He is usually seen speaking boastfully, proclaiming that he is a "god" in front of Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke and asking them to treat him as such. Other than that, Tengen displays a carefree and energetic attitude towards others, as he gets excited imagining how "flamboyant" it would be if Tanjiro Kamado's blood vessels exploded, and tries to forcefully carry Aoi Kanzaki to the pleasure district with him so that she can reluctantly help him on a dangerous mission. Tengen is also very demanding of others, treating the slayers very harshly during the Pillar Training Arc and insulting them for having no substance when they could not survive basic endurance training. He is generally confident, unwavering, and resolute even when losing, to the point that Tanjiro saw Kyojuro in Tengen.
However, Tengen also has a benevolent side that is hidden beneath his flamboyant facade, which he only shows to those who are extremely close to him, including his three wives, Makio, Suma and Hinatsuru. Tengen declares that they must value their lives above all others because they are precious to him. After the events of the Pleasure District Arc, Tengen also becomes more friendly towards Tanjiro.
Tengen admires people like Kyojuro Rengoku and compares himself to his compatriot Hashira, which implies that he has some kind of inferiority complex. This is further proven by the fact that he completely denies the possibility that he was endowed with talent and tells himself that he will never become someone as great as Kyojuro. Tengen also regrets letting so many lives slip through his fingers over the years. Kagaya Ubuyashiki praised Tengen for the difficult path he chose, and that he faced and fought to protect human lives despite all his conflicts and contradictions that he hides behind his loud and confident facade, which made Tengen also respect Kagaya.
Although he is a shinobi who traditionally values mission completion, Tengen rejected this ideology after seeing its effect on his family. Now, he believes that his subordinates, whether they are his wives or the demon slayers under his command, should value their lives, and the lives of innocent people, above their missions or his own. Tengen especially hated becoming like his brother or father who was apathetic toward human life and desperate to abandon what they had taught him.
History
Past
Tengen was born into a family of nine children in a shinobi clan. Three of the nine children died before they reached the age of 10 due to overzealous training. The other six were forced to kill each other on their father's orders without knowing who they were fighting because their heads and faces were covered with masks. Tengen did not understand his father's ruse until after he had killed two of his brothers. By the age of 15, seven of his siblings were already dead, only he and his younger brother survived. As children, his father had forced them to undergo harsh and intensive training in an attempt to save the clan by making them believe that they had to get rid of innocent lives for their own benefit and to have a wife only in order to have offspring. Since his last brother had adopted this mindset, and he didn't feel bad about killing his other siblings, Tengen was appalled and decided to leave the clan permanently. He later left the village with his wives without facing his brother.
Uzui's family practices polygamy, so when Tengen turned 15, he had to have 3 wives, who were chosen by the clan leader. After leaving the village with his wives, he would later teach them to prioritize their lives over their mission, going against their teachings as kunoichi. For a while after leaving the clan, he used to say he was going to hell, but he stopped after Makio got angry at him, Hinatsuri cried and Suma bit him. He wondered if he should have exterminated the Uzui clan, but he couldn't bring himself to kill his father or his brother.
After his clan left, Tengen and his family sought out Kagaya Ubuyashiki to help him fight with the Demon Slayers and he officially joined them. Tengen would later rise through the ranks of the Demon Slayers Army and become the Pillar of Sound before Sanemi Shinazugawa became a Pillar and when Kanae Kocho was already a member.
Synopsis
Bow Recovery Training
Tengen was present with the other Pillars at Tanjiro Kamado's trial. When he first meets Nezuko and Tanjiro, he openly expresses his disgust at the idea of them traveling together, even stating that he will cut off his head.
When Tanjiro explains his reasoning for traveling with a Demon, the Pillar of Sound is intrigued and even asks to see their interaction. However, when the leader of the Demon Slaying Army informs the Pillar of his acceptance of the siblings, Tengen openly rejects the idea of allowing Tanjiro to stay with Nezuko.
Arc Train de l'Infini
Although Tengen did not participate in any major battles during the arc, he hears the news of Kyojuro's death from a raven and expresses his concern that his comrade-in-arms has lost to a higher rank.
Arc Quartier des plaisirs
Tengen enters the Butterfly Domain and tries to kidnap Naho and Aoi to help him in his mission. However, he is forced to change his tactics when the three boys, Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke, rescue the girls and force him to take them with him on his mission.
On the way, Tengen reveals to them that they are going to investigate the disappearance of his women in the pleasure district. To do so, he explains that each boy will be sent to one of the three brothels: Ogimoto house, Kyogoku house or Tokito house to try to collect information about their location. Once arrived in the district, Tengen disguises the boys as girls and drops them in each house to begin their investigation.
Tengen keeps a low profile while the boys gather information from each house and watch for any unusual activity in the neighborhood. After Zenitsu disappears, Tengen senses the immediate danger and asks the other two boys to abandon the mission and let him finish it for their safety. He arrives at the Kyogoku house and takes the manager hostage and demands to know where Zenitsu and Hinatsuru disappeared. When he learns that Hinatsuru was sent to Kirimise, Tengen presses the manager to find out more and he reveals that Warabihime was behind the disappearances.
When Tengen arrives at Kirimise, he discovers that Hinatsuru was being held captive by Daki's obi and defeats him, before attending to his wife. Once he has given her medicine and checked that she is okay, Tengen asks Hinatsuru to leave the district and get to safety before continuing to search for his other wives and Zenitsu. When he returns to the district, Tengen hears the sounds of the underground cave and enters it to find his wives, Makio and Suma, inside fighting the obi. After freeing them, the obi manages to escape and Tengen goes after it, with Inosuke and Zenitsu on his tail.
Tengen arrives at the scene to find Tanjiro struggling to control his sister and quickly beheads Daki, unable to believe that she is the Higher Rank they were looking for. After discovering the truth about Daki and Gyutaro's presence, the Pillars engage in a fierce battle with the Demons. Gyutaro manages to poison Tengen during the fight, preventing him from decapitating the Demon. After finally taking down the Demon siblings, Tengen ends up losing his left hand and eye.
By the end of the battle, Gyutaro's poison has spread throughout Tengen's body, preventing him from speaking. As he is dying from the poison, Nezuko Kamado intervenes and uses her Blood Power to burn the poison out of his system, managing to save him. Once Obanai arrives on the scene, he tells her that he is officially retiring from the Demon Slaying Army and assures her that the trainee he hates so much has become strong enough to fill the void his absence will leave, referring to Tanjiro. As the Kakushi rush to clean up the scene, Tengen is then accompanied by his wives as he walks away to begin his retirement.
Bow Pillar Training
Although officially retired, Tengen participates in Pillar training with his wives. He oversees the first level, which is basic endurance training.
Infinite Dimensional Fortress Bow
Tengen and Shinjuro Rengoku were in another section of the Ubuyashiki estate when he was taken into Muzan Kibutsuji's Infinity Castle. They stand guard outside the room where Kiriya, Kanata and Kuina Ubuyashiki are, while the surviving Ubuyashiki map the fortress and instruct the demon slayers.
Relations
Tanjiro Kamado
Tengen meets Tanjiro for the first time during his trial with the other Pillars. Upon learning that he was traveling with a demon, Tengen first vouches to kill him for disobeying the rules and also rejects Kagaya's blessing to allow Nezuko and Tanjiro to travel together.
When they end up at the Butterfly Domain, Tanjiro gets angry and confronts Tengen after witnessing his attempt to kidnap Aoi and Naho. During the intense exchange, Tengen gets fed up with Tanjiro's attitude and hits him for disrespecting him even though he is his superior. However, the exchange eventually calms down when the boys offer to accompany Tengen on his mission instead of the girls.
As they officially begin their mission, Tanjiro's naivety pleases Tengen, seemingly melting any tension between them. When Tanjiro has trouble restraining Nezuko after her demonization, Tengen chastises him for his lack of control over his sister and advises him to put her to sleep, instead of attacking her himself.
As the two work together to take down Gyutaro, Tanjiro worries about Tengen's deteriorating health due to the poison and constantly tries to protect him from impending attacks. Even in situations where Tanjiro is risking his life, Tengen always manages to keep Tanjiro out of the way or protect him before he can be seriously injured.
At the end of the battle, Tengen turns around to warn Tanjiro of Gyutaro's impending attack instead of running away showing his concern for him. Although he has horrible wounds himself, Tengen still shows his concern for Tanjiro's well-being by telling him to stay still or else he would die from his wounds. After the completion of their mission, Tengen finally recognizes Tanjiro's abilities by telling Obanai that he "has become strong enough" to fill his vacant position as he retires.
Nezuko Kamado
Initially, Tengen did not accept the Kamado siblings because Tanjiro Kamado was keeping his demon-turned sister alive. Upon hearing that he had traveled with a demon, Tengen vouched to kill them both for breaking the rules of the body. What changed Tengen's mind about Nezuko was that as he was dying from Gyutaro's poison, Nezuko used her Blood Demon Art to completely burn off the poison from her entire body, which at first confused Tengen into thinking if it was even possible. He finally retired from being a Hashira due to being rendered unable to fight.
Zenitsu Agatsuma
When the two originally meet, Zenitsu develops a disdain for Tengen after he tries to kidnap the girls of the Butterfly Domain, and because of his flamboyant personality, even calling him a "god of fools". Tengen's frivolous attitude does not suit Zenitsu's character and often annoys him. When Tengen tells the boys about his plan to find his wives, Zenitsu becomes furious at his antics and mocks him for claiming to have three wives, which causes Tengen to pass out.Tengen's appearance also makes Zenitsu boil with jealousy as he seems to attract more attention from the women in the pleasure district. Zenitsu's dislike for Tengen reaches its peak when he abandons Zenitsu at the Kyogoku House and tells the manager to make him clean up the brothel, which makes Zenitsu boil with rage as he has to finish his mission.
Inosuke Hashibira
Tengen initially finds Inosuke quite disturbing because of the boar's head he is wearing. When Tengen introduces himself to the trio of boys, Inosuke takes the opportunity to introduce himself as the "mountain god", but his introduction does not please Tengen and he calls Inosuke "scary". Inosuke's blunt personality does not suit Tengen either, as seen when he hits Inosuke for carelessly asking if Tengen's wives are still alive.
Inosuke does not necessarily speak to Tengen with respect, as seen when he blamed him for being careless and allowing the obi to escape from the underground cave. However, Inosuke recognizes Tengen's advanced abilities and skills to the point where he imitates Tengen's slogans.
Obanai Iguro
Despite Tengen's victory over Rank Six Superior, Obanai downplays this significant achievement and instead emphasizes the extent of his injuries. Tengen, for his part, dismisses Obanai's concerns, insisting on retreating and disagreeing with Obanai's sentiment that the slayers would decline.
Makio, Suma and Hinatsuru
Tengen has great respect for his wives and cares deeply for them. When Tengen joined the Demon Slayers Army, he made sure to inform his wives that they should prioritize their lives over the mission, and to make sure to return home. Tengen wanted to make it clear that his wives were his top priority as far as personal safety was concerned.
During their stay in the pleasure district, Tengen often communicated with them through letters and decided to look for them once he stopped receiving them. When Inosuke asked if his wives were still alive, Tengen became furious and knocked him unconscious, showing that he reprimanded any disrespect to his wives.
During their stay in the pleasure district, Tengen often communicated with them by letters and decided to look for them once he had stopped receiving them. When Inosuke asks him if his wives are still alive, Tengen becomes furious and knocks him out, showing that he reprimands any disrespect towards his wives. Later, when Tengen finds Hinatsuru in the Kirimise, he administers medicine to her and asks if she is okay. When she begins to apologize to him for failing her mission, Tengen reassures her that she did the right thing and kisses her before asking her to leave the area for her safety. However, when Hinatsuru returns to help in the fight against Gyutaro, she is captured by the demon, causing Tengen to panic and try to save her. Tanjiro manages to save Hinatsuru in time, allowing Tengen to express his gratitude and mention that he owes him for saving his wife.
When Tengen discovers the underground cave, he cuts the obi near his wives and apologizes to Suma and Makio for being late. He approaches the women and pats their heads, reassuring them that they have met his expectations as wives and they begin to cry with relief.
After the events of the final battle, Suma, Makio and Hinatsuru immediately rush to administer first aid to Tengen, but his injuries seem to be too severe for them to treat, which worries them. Suma cries, Makio panics and Hinatsuru cries at the sight of her injuries. However, when Nezuko manages to cure Tengen of the poisoning, the women rejoice that he is cured and weep with joy as they embrace him.
Skills & Competencies
Sword skills
Breath of Sound
This breath was developed by Tengen and is unique to him. Thanks to his improved sense of hearing, he uses a combat strategy called "score", which consists in reading his opponents' movements and deconstructing them into sound by analyzing the rhythm of their movements. In particular, he uses his modified bombs to couple them with his breath.
First Movement: Thunder
Tengen raises his twin swords above his head and strikes them down with great force while simultaneously creating an explosion with his bombs, causing a loud sound resembling thunder.
Fourth Movement: Avici's Lethal Glas
Tengen holds his swords apart and spins them rapidly along with his bombs, making this technique a combination of attack and defense.
Fifth Movement: Strident Symphony
Tengen holds one of his swords with an inverted handle and spins the other using the chain that connects them. He couples this by also throwing numerous bombs to explode. This technique was able to defeat a Superior Moon.
