Apparence

Tōshirō is short, with turquoise eyes and short, pointed white hair, which draws attention in the human world. He wears the standard sleeveless captain's haori with a green sash around his shoulders, held together by a round, star-like clip. The belt holds the sheath of his Zanpakutō in place on his back and is tied to it at each end. He sometimes walks around his tabi. He is relatively young by Shinigami standards, and childlike in appearance. In the human world, he wears a black short-sleeved golf shirt and gray pants. He also wore the uniform of Karakura High School.

Before Tōshirō became a captain, his hair was not as spiky, with only a few spikes here and there. He also wore the standard Shinigami outfit, but with the addition of the 10th Division badge on the left breast of his outfit.

17 months after the defeat of Aizen, shortly after Ichigo regained his Shinigami powers, Tōshirō appeared sporting a hairstyle similar to that before he became a Shinigami, and a long turquoise scarf. His green scarf has also changed to a thin chain, but still retains the star-shaped clip.

After training for an unspecified amount of time in preparation to fight the Wandenreich, Tōshirō's hair appears longer, his bangs now reaching his eyes despite being supported by a newly acquired bandana. He also appears stiffer than before, with his outfit falling loosely off his body.

After being Zombified by Giselle Gewelle, Hitsugaya's appearance changes dramatically. He now wears a white double-breasted trench coat with black lapels that are secured by four buttons on each side and has a badge with a six-pointed cross on his left breast. He has a black belt with a large buckle around his waist, slightly puffed up white pants and white boots with black furry shirts. He keeps the thin chain holding the sheath of his Zanpakutō around his torso.

Personality

Hitsugaya is generally mature and serious, unlike his free-spirited lieutenant, Rangiku Matsumoto. Despite their personality differences, he and Rangiku seem very close. Tōshirō is easily annoyed by other blunders or drawing unnecessary attention to themselves, such as when he leads a Shinigami team in Ichigo Kurosaki's high school. Hitsugaya hates anything that he deems childish as well as being described as something close to a child or an elementary school kid. He is very protective of Momo Hinamori, due to the fact that they were old childhood friends. Hitsugaya hates summer and hot weather in general.

Toshiro's favorite foods are watermelon and amanattō. He does not like dried persimmons. During his childhood in western Rukongai, he was so skilled with spinning tops that he became the local undefeated champion. He works very hard, but his motive seems to be that if he finishes quickly, he can return to his afternoon nap. He believes in the adage "children who sleep well, grow well," and hopes to grow quickly, a wish shared by his subordinates. Naturally, they do not express this fact in front of him, even though after practicing this adage regularly for so long, he has not really grown in size.

Hitsugaya is generally a pleasant subject for many Shinigami in the Soul Society, as well as by his enemies. Hitsugaya has developed a cold attitude towards most people; he tolerates those jokes and carries on with his duties. Although he becomes angry at these jokes, he does not take action against anyone who insults him unless they are his enemies. The only thing he cannot tolerate is the inappropriate use of his name or not being addressed as "Captain Hitsugaya", as he has worked very hard for this title, so he gets angry when he is not addressed as such. He does not address other officers by their titles, only their last names. The only person who actually calls him by his first name is Ichigo, whom he reminds is constantly to answer him properly, and Hinamori, who is the only person allowed to call him that. Hinamori tends to call him "Hitsugaya-kun" and she and Ukitake occasionally use "Shirō-chan" (シ ロ ち ゃ ん) - a nickname meaning "white" ("Snowy" in the English manga) in reference to his hair - in both cases without any repercussions. Also, Karin and her friends call her by her first name and they have never received any reprimands for it. Jūshirō Ukitake often gives Hitsugaya candy and other foods because "Jû Shirō" and "Shiro" his similar and because they both have white hair, making them both "Shirō-chan."

Tōshirō Hitsugaya

Skills and Competencies

Hitsugaya is the youngest Captain of the 13 Divisions. He has an immense talent for fighting with an innate talent that is far above average, but not only that. He is a thoughtful fighter, an accomplished leader and an exemplary soldier. He possesses great Spiritual Power as well as a very powerful Zanpakutō, the most powerful of the ice Zanpakutōs, Hyōrinmaru. His level will keep growing throughout the story until he becomes one of the most powerful Shinigami during the Millennium Bloody War.

  • Natural Talent: Perhaps Hitsugaya's most amazing trait is his intellect and natural talent. He is the most gifted prodigy the Soul Society has had since Gin Ichimaru, entering the Shin'Ō Academy on his first try despite his very young age, graduating from the academy in a single year with the highest written and performance scores in each of his classes, joining the Gotei 13 shortly thereafter, and then becoming the youngest Shinigami to ever reach the rank of Captain. In terms of intellect, Hitsugaya is equally impressive. He was the first to suspect Ichimaru of treason and realized that Rukia's execution hid another issue. Shunsui Kyōraku, one of the strongest Shinigami in history, says that because he is a genius, Hitsugaya could surpass him in a hundred years.
  • Expert in Strategy and Tactics: Despite his age, Hitsugaya has keen instincts and great intuition in battle. He is, for the most part, aware of everything going on around him, and is also able to see through most deceptions. For example, he discerned that Gin Ichimaru was more than he wanted to let on, even though he was not yet sharp enough to realize that it was all part of Aizen's plot. He also knew how to analyze an opponent's abilities in record time, able to deduce the basic mechanisms behind an opponent's attacks and quickly determine his strength and weakness to better counter them. As a captain, he is an accomplished leader. Captain General Yamamoto has given him missions and the command of a team of senior officers to deal with threats. For example, Hitsugaya led the team sent by the Soul Society that reinforced Ichigo's group against the Arrancars. In battle, he has great instincts against imminent danger, such as his reaction to Halibel's initial attack right after his release. After losing his Bankai to the Stern Ritters, Hitsugaya was forced to train with several innovative methods of using his more limited Shikai, such as combining his ice powers with those of Rangiku's Zanpakutō ash, Haineko, to create vacuum ice blades, creating a wall made of thin, hollow layers of ice.
  • Great Stamina: Despite his lean and weak physical constitution, Tōshirō is a strong fighter. He survived Shawlong Koufang's attacks when he was only at 20% of his ability. He also remained able to fight after taking a direct, piercing attack from Bazz-B in the chest.

    Shinigami abilities

Zanjutsu (斬術, Japanese for "Sword Handling"): One of the 4 fighting techniques of the Shinigami that allows for swordplay. Hitsugaya is a master swordsman, able to use his size to effectively counter and outwit his opponents. His talent in Zanjutsu is more than evident, especially since he is the youngest Captain in history and also one of the youngest to have reached the Bankai. His sword fighting talent is great enough that he would use his Zanpakutō in battle, with which he has great mastery. Instead, he relies on Hyōrinmaru's sealed form, only using his Shikai, or even his Bankai, when things get tough.

Kidō (鬼道, Japanese for "Demonic Way"): Hitsugaya is highly skilled in Kidō and is able to perform high-level Kidō spells without incantation. For example, in his fight against Hyōrinmaru, he used a level 60 Bakudō without the incantation.

    • Hadō #31 - Shakkahō (赤火砲, Red Fireball)
    • Bakudō #63 -Sajō Sabaku (鎖条鎖縛, Chaining)

Hohō (歩法, Japanese for "Agility"): Hitsugaya is highly skilled in Shunpo. On several occasions in battle, he is able to block and dodge dangerous attacks.

Hakuda (白打, Japanese for "White Strikes"): Although usually relying on her Zanpakutō in battle, Hitsugaya was able to knock out Hinamori, overwhelmed by grief with a single blow, while she was in the air.

    Spiritual Power

Tōshirō's Spiritual Power has the same effect as his Zanpakutō, as he is an elemental representative of ice. His spiritual pressure is said to be very great and "cold". Even before he became a Shinigami, his spiritual pressure was immense and uncontrollable, like Ichigo's, and made people around him freeze, namely his grandmother, who lived with him at the time. This icy spiritual power also reflects his attitude. He is also the youngest Shinigami to have reached his Bankai. He even had visions of Hyōrinmaru's spirit before he got his Zanpakutō or even entered the Shin'Ō academy. He is able to hide his presence well; on several occasions, he manages to surprise Hinamori and Matsumoto with his sudden appearances, causing them to complain about him "sneaking" behind them. His Reiatsu is white.

    Zanpakutō

Hyōrinmaru (氷輪丸, Ring of Ice): Sealed, Hyōrinmaru looks like a normal katana, except for the guard, which is shaped like a bronze-colored four-pointed star. Its hilt is light blue and its scabbard is dark blue. The scabbard dissolves completely when he draws his sword. The sword is a bit longer than most Zanpakutō, measuring 1.4 meters long. This makes it taller than Hitsugaya, preventing him from carrying it on his hip. For this reason, Hitsugaya instead carries it on his back by its green belt on his right shoulder.

Hyōrinmaru is the strongest of all the ice Zanpakutō in the entire Soul Society. As such, Hitsugaya does not require water for him to use his abilities. Hitsugaya's control over Hyōrinmaru's power is great enough to use some of his Bankai techniques in the Shikai stage, though this can backfire and affect him as well. The difference in level between Hyōrinmaru's Shikai and Bankai is very small; the real difference is in the amounts of ice each form can create, with the Shikai only able to create relatively small amounts.

    • Shikai: His release phrase is Reign in the frozen sky! (霜天に坐せ, Sōten ni zase). In his Shikai, Hyōrinmaru extends slightly in length, and gains a crescent-shaped blade attached to his hilt by a long metal chain, which can extend considerably, if necessary, by force of will. The chain itself can be used to attack or entangle a target.
    • Shikai Special Ability: Hyōrinmaru allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice. Her slashes create an immense amount of spiritual power that spills out of the tip of the blade, creating a stream of ice in the shape of a Chinese dragon. The dragon flies towards its opponents and instantly freezes everything it touches. Hyōrinmaru can create multiple ice dragons to attack an opponent from different angles. The chain blade also freezes whatever Hitsugaya traps with it. The power it expels is so overwhelming that in Soul Society, its mere release affects the environment, creating a thunderstorm or blizzard.
      • Tensō Jūrin (天相従臨, Subjugation of Heaven): One of Hyōrinmaru's core powers, as well as the most powerful. It allows him to control the weather in a fairly large area, or more specifically, the water in the surrounding atmosphere. The ability is usable in both Shikai and Bankai. However, Hitsugaya states that this aspect of his powers is not fully mature and that he does not like using it in Bankai, as he does not know whether or not he could prevent it from killing everyone in the area.
      • Shinkū Tasō Hyōheki (真空多層氷壁, Multi-layered vacuum ice wall): To effectively combat despite the small amounts of ice his Hyōrinmaru can create, Hitsugaya developed this ice creation method in collaboration with Rangiku's Zanpakutō, Haineko. By using the ash from Rangiku's Shikai to create layers of ice, then removing the ash and returning Haineko to her sword form, Hitsugaya can create a multi-layered wall of ice with multiple layers of void. This allows the small ice that Hyōrinmaru can create to resist fire attacks with little damage. Hitsugaya can then manipulate this ice to use it as a sword.
      • Shinkū no Kōri no Yaiba (真空の氷の刃, Blade of Ice Under Vacuum): This ability allows Hitsugaya to control his Shinkū Tasō Hyōheki technique and manipulate the ice by picking it up at Hyōrinmaru's tip before expelling it forward, creating a large blade of ice that impales his opponent.
      • Ryōjin Hyōheki (綾陣氷壁, Woven Wall of Ice): Hitsugaya generates a protective wall of ice by finely weaving threads of ice together.
      • Rokui Hyōketsujin (六衣氷結陣, Six Clothes Connected Ice Network): Hitsugaya can set a trap by placing five snowflake-shaped ice crystals on the ground in a pentagonal formation. When an opponent enters the trap, each snowflake sends a line of ice towards them. The space inside the pentagon is then enclosed in a large pillar of ice, trapping the opponent.

    Tōshirō Hitsugaya

    • Bankai: Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (大紅蓮 氷輪丸, Mahāpadma Ice Ring or Great Crimson Lotus Ice Ring): Hitsugaya's Bankai causes Hyōrinmaru's ice to flow over Hitsugaya, starting with his right arm, on which the ice forms into the shape of a dragon's head around his hand, enveloping the sword all the way to the hilt, which also changes shape from a 4-pointed star into an 8-pointed star. Ice continues to form on his shoulders, with two large wings sprouting from his back and a long tail. Ice forms along his left arm and wraps around his hand, which ends in a claw. Hitsugaya's feet are encased in ice in the same way as his left hand, as they also end in claws. These new ice limbs are mobile and can be used as an extension of himself to help in battle. During certain appearances of his Bankai, three ice flowers form behind him, each consisting of four diamond-shaped purple petals. These flowers melt, petal by petal, as Hitsugaya's fight drags on, leading Shawlong Koufang to speculate that Hitsugaya's Bankai will deactivate when all twelve petals disappear, assuming that the captain's Bankai was incomplete due to his young age. During his fight against Luppi, these petals were visibly absent. However, during his fight in the fake city of Karakura, they were present again.
      • Bankai Hollowified: During the Millennium Bloody War, Hitsugaya has his Bankai stolen and later receives a pill from Urahara as a measure to get it back. Upon his return, Daiguren Hyōrinmaru changes his appearance due to being temporarily hollowified. An ice belt resembling Hyōrinmaru's tail crosses diagonally across Hitsugaya's chest, and he gets an ice mask covering half of his face with a hole for his eye, as well as two ice ears on his head resembling horns.
    • Bankai Special Ability: Just like with his Shikai, Tōshirō can freeze objects and areas, though the radius and strength of the freeze is greater. Because the Bankai's freezing ability is so much greater, Tōshirō can swing his tail like a weapon to try to freeze objects. Hyōrinmaru's Bankai allows Tōshirō access to several additional techniques.
      • Bankai Regeneration: During his fight against Luppi Antenor, Hitsugaya's Bankai was damaged. However, it regenerated and Hitsugaya said that as long as there is water in the air, his Bankai can be revived indefinitely.
      • Zanhyō Ningyō (残氷人形, Persistent Ice Puppet): By activating his Bankai, Tōshirō is able to create and shape a large amount of ice to look exactly like him. His copy is realistic, as it can appear to bleed. He has stated that he can usually only fool an opponent once with it, so he usually saves it near the end of a battle.
      • Ice Wing Shield: Hitsugaya is able to wrap his wings around himself like a sphere, protecting him from attacks.
      • Ryūsenka (竜霰花, Dragon Hail Flower): When Hitsugaya stabs his opponents, a huge burst of ice erupts from the point of contact between Hyōrinmaru and the opponents, locking them in and freezing them. Hitsugaya then proceeds to break the ice and his opponent with it.
      • Sennen Hyōrō (千年氷牢, Thousand-Year Ice Prison) : Hitsugaya creates many pillars of ice, encircling him and his enemy. When he turns his sword 90 degrees counterclockwise, these pillars then move towards the enemy, enveloping and crushing him. Although this technique is very powerful, Hitsugaya deduces that it takes a considerable amount of time to prepare, and therefore distracting his enemy is crucial to completing this attack.
      • Hyōten Hyakkasō (氷天百華葬, Funeral to the 100 Flowers of Frozen Sky): This ability is an extension of Hyōrinmaru's Tensō Jūrin power. However, since Hitsugaya does not like to use Tensō Jūrin while his Bankai is active, he rarely uses it. The ability opens a huge hole in the clouds, through which a huge amount of snow falls on his opponent. When the snow comes in contact with the opponent, the flakes turn into ice flowers that grow all over the body, instantly trapping them in a huge pillar of ice. Hitsugaya claimed that when the last of the 100 petals fall, the life of the one touched by the technique will be over.
      • Guncho Tsurara (群鳥氷柱, Ice Flock) : Hitsugaya freezes water into ice and then swings his Zanpakutō in an arc, firing a series of ice daggers at his target.
      • Hyōryū Senbi (氷竜旋尾, Spinning Tail of the Ice Dragon): With this technique, Hitsugaya swings his sword in a linear direction and creates ice overflowing from his blade in the form of a crescent.
        • Zekkū (絶空, Breaking the Void): This ability allows Hitsugaya to control his Hyōryū Senbi technique and send it into the air.
    • Full form of Daiguren Hyōrinmaru: After the fight against Aizen in the Battle of Karakura, Hitsugaya trained and strengthened his Bankai considerably, completing its development after eighteen months of hard work. It wasn't until his fight against Gerard Valkyrie in the Bloody Millennium War that Hitsugaya was able to complete his Bankai. Hitsugaya states that the Daiguren Hyōrinmaru reaches its completion when the last petal of its ice flowers falls. He states that his power was not mature enough to use his Bankai to its fullest, but he was able to obtain an adult body when he reached his completion in order to reach his full potential. As an adult using his Bankai, Hitsugaya is tall and thin, and ice covers his shoulders, forearms and knees.
      • Instant Freeze: In this form, Hitsugaya can instantly freeze extremely large objects at a distance with a simple wave of his hand; this also extends to objects that his sword cuts through. Furthermore, anything he freezes will have all its functions and abilities nullified. For example, Gerard Valkyrie's sword, Hoffnung, has been rendered useless. If anyone touches Hitsugaya while in this form, they will also be frozen.
      • Shikai Hyōketsu (四界氷結, Four Worlds Freeze): In this form, Hitsugaya can freeze everything in front of him by concentrating his power for 4 seconds.

    Tōshirō Hitsugaya

    History

Hitsugaya comes from the province of Junrinan in the 1st district of Western Rukongai . There he lived with his grandmother and Momo Hinamori. As a young child, Hitsugaya was a kid who liked to eat watermelons and make fun of Hinamori. She called him "Shiro-chan" and he retaliated by calling her "Momo bedwetter." The two were close friends and Hitsugaya, despite being younger and much shorter than his friend, always felt he needed to protect her.

Even at an inexperienced young age, Hitsugaya could hear the call of his Zanpakutō spirit, Hyōrinmaru. Despite this, he never told anyone and could not pinpoint what was happening other than to assume that he was having an ever-recurring dream.

When Hinamori left to become a Shinigami, he described himself as happy to see her go, but it was more an act than his true feelings. His next friends in the neighborhood are afraid of him, even though he never did anything against them. His grandmother, "Granny", and Hinamori were the only ones in the neighborhood who were not afraid of him. His personality was supposedly "cold as ice" or at least thought to be, and he often wondered if it was due to his appearance or his attitude. When Momo had been in Shinigami Academy for 5 years, he began to notice how he didn't grow an inch. He noticed that Hinamori's hair grew and that she visited him less often, apparently having a purpose in her life now. He also noticed that "Grandma" was getting skinny.

When he went to the market one day, a shopkeeper, from whom he bought some items, treated him with disdain. He then met Rangiku Matsumoto, who shouted at the shopkeeper for being unpleasant to Hitsugaya and blamed him for his poor skills towards his customers. When Hitsugaya turns around, he is knocked down after bumping into Rangiku's breasts. She yells at him about "standing there and crying about it and not standing up like a man," even though she was the one who knocked him down in the first place. He pushes her off and runs away. Later that night, he had a vivid dream of an icy blue dragon, a gigantic serpentine with large wings and an echoing voice. This dream was markedly different from the previous ones, where he had only experienced sensations, but nothing substantial to what the sense perhaps. This time, however, the reason behind the dreams not only materializes, but tries to tell him his name. Hitsugaya can not hear it however, his voice is muffled by strong winds. He then wakes up in a cold sweat.

When he wakes up, he sees Rangiku and is surprised to see her in his house. She immediately tells him to stop leaking his Reiatsu and to go to sleep. She further explains that his grandmother seems to be quite cold, which Hitsugaya notices for the first time that the room is extremely cold and affecting his grandmother. Rangiku then tells him he should become a Shinigami, indicating that children with a power as strong as him need to learn to master their power under control. She explains that if he stays in the way he is, his power will eventually kill his grandmother. At first, Hitsugaya doesn't know what she is talking about, but she quietly puts her hand on his chest and asks him if he hears a voice shouting at him. She explains to him that once he finds that voice, he will understand how to control his power. She then notes that, for this to happen, he must become a Shinigami.

Soon after, he tells his grandmother about his intentions to become a Shinigami. To Hitsugaya's surprise, she is happy for him. She tells him that she had always felt that he was holding back because he didn't want to leave her, but in return, it only hurt him and seeing him like this, hurt her. Hitsugaya then leaves her to go his own way with the blessing of his grandmother.

With Hitsugaya's natural talent, he quickly entered the Shinigami Academy and graduated early despite his young age. Hinamori continued to call him "Shirō-chan" out of habit and felt that she needed to protect him. Because of a promise she had made, she only started calling him "Hitsugaya-kun" after he reached his Shikai of his Zanpakutō and was recognized as a Shinigami.

    Tōshirō Hitsugaya

Hitsugaya eventually joined the Tenth Division under the tutelage of Isshin Shiba, working at the rank of 3rd seat. One day, Hitsugaya reported to Isshin that a Shinigami in Naruki City had died two months ago. Isshin was aware of the situation, knowing that Gotei 13 was investigating the incident. Hitsugaya then informed him that two other people had died in the past month while he was investigating the cause. Concerned, Isshin decided to investigate the cause himself. Rangiku tried to go and help him, but Hitsugaya stopped him, informing him that they are not strong enough to help him. Then he was also present to witness Rangiku's rage towards their captain to return to the living world, apparently on a whim.

Very competent and knowledgeable, he quickly became the youngest captain in the Gotei 13 in the history of the Soul Society. He is also a friend of Jidanbō Ikkanzaka , the keeper of the western gate, who taught him the "rules of the city."

    Sypnosis

    Arc de la Soul Society

Hitsugaya first appears during the urgent meeting of the Captains of Gotei 13. However, he states that as usual, the old men are engaging in their silly arguments in response to the constant quarrels of the other Captains.

Hitsugaya's keen intuition and good sense of observation led him to suspect that the Captain of the 3rd Division, Gin Ichimaru, was up to something, as the circumstances surrounding the execution of Rukia Kuchiki became more and more complicated. He warns Hinamori of his suspicions, which inspires the lieutenant to attack Ichimaru, following the apparent murder of her Captain, Sōsuke Aizen, forcing Hitsugaya to lock Hinamori and Izuru Kira in prison, as the latter fought with her to protect her Captain. After they are arrested, Hitsugaya asks Ichimaru if he was going to kill Hinamori. He calmly denies it, but Hitsugaya threatens to kill him if even one drop of Hinamori's blood falls, blaming it on the Captain of the Third Division.

After Ichimaru releases Kira from his cell, Hitsugaya becomes suspicious and confronts the Lieutenant and the Captain together. He is interrupted by Hinamori, who now thinks that Hitsugaya has murdered his Captain and tries to kill him. She grabs her sword so hard that her hands bleed. Deciding to attack Ichimaru, Hitsugaya is forced to hit Hinamori out of the way, as she is too close for him to avoid. Noticing the condition of his hands, Hitsugaya attacks Ichimaru, unsealing his Zanpakutō, and warning Kira to leave (he suggests a distance of twelve kilometers), stating that he cannot guarantee that he will not be injured. During the fight, Hitsugaya managed to freeze Ichimaru's left arm, forcing him to open his eyes and erase his smile for the first time. Trapped by Hitsugaya, he tries to kill Hinamori, but his attack is stopped by Rangiku Matsumoto, who threatens to fight him if he does not stop. Ichimaru then sheathed his Zanpakuto and disappeared.

Seeing how destructive Rukia's execution is becoming and now firmly certain that Ichimaru is the one behind it, Hitsugaya begins to wonder which recent events are true and which are false. He and Matsumoto are interrupted by a Jigokuchō, announcing that Rukia's execution has been moved up, once again, to the next day. Hitsugaya is determined to stop the execution and disrupt Ichimaru's plans, calling directly to the 46 Chūō Offices.

Upon arriving at the Underground Central of the Hall Assembly, they discover that all 46 members are dead. Hitsugaya comes to the conclusion that they must have been dead for at least two days. Furthermore, the thirteen protective seals are still active and there is no sign of intrusion. Hitsugaya then realizes that the only possible scenario is that they were killed before they were sealed in their quarters and that all the recent orders given are wrong. He also realizes that Ichimaru could not have hatched such a plot alone. Kira then interrupts the Captain and his Lieutenant, and they take him on a chase. When Hitsugaya asks Kira if he is behind the death of the 46; he denies it, and declares that he arrived just after them. He also informs her that instead of chasing him, he should protect Hinamori, explaining that she had no trouble to free herself from her cell and the barrier that Hitsugaya installed. Realizing that Hinamori has followed them, Hitsugaya turns back and orders Matsumoto to take care of Kira.

Hitsugaya returns to the 46 Offices of Chūō and discovers Aizen alive. Extremely confused, he is even more surprised to find Aizen and Ichimaru together, declaring that the Soul Society forces are their enemies. Hitsugaya finds Hinamori injured, and asks since when Aizen and Ichimaru work together, Aizen answers that they have always been comrades. Since he became Captain, Aizen declares that he has always considered Ichimaru as his subordinate. Hitsugaya then says that Aizen has disappointed everyone from the beginning. Aizen then explains that admiration is the farthest thing from understanding. Hitsugaya decides to kill Aizen for his betrayal and unseals his Bankai. He then stabs Aizen, but realizes too late that it was only an illusion of Aizen's Shikai, allowing Aizen to inflict a critical blow to Hitsugaya.

After the ordeal, Retsu Unohana, Captain of the Fourth Division, appears and confronts Aizen who escaped. She then gives first aid to Hitsugaya and Hinamori. Unohana takes it upon herself to personally initiate emergency surgery on Hitsugaya and Hinamori. They are in stable condition with Lieutenant Kotetsu administering their aftercare treatments after Aizen's escape from the Soul Society.

Hitsugaya is later seen fully recovered and watching over a still recovering and unconscious Hinamori.

    Tōshirō Hitsugaya

    Arc des Arrancars

Hitsugaya leads a group of Shinigami assigned to protect Karakura Town from the threat of the Arrancars, dressed as students in Ichigo's school. Hitsugaya explains to Ichigo the danger that the Arrancars pose to the Soul Society. When Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez's group of Arrancars attacks, Hitsugaya confronts Shawlong Kūfang. The latter easily gains the advantage, even against Daiguren Hyōrinmaru, with Hitsugaya's attacks having little effect on the Arrancar. Soon after, Shawlong concludes that killing a Captain in Bankai is much better than killing a weak Captain, releases his Resurrección and seriously injures Hitsugaya.

Shawlong then uses his long claws to cut off one of Hitsugaya's ice wings and explains the truth about the Arrancars and Espadas. The Soul Society finally agrees to relax the limits of the Shinigami, allowing Hitsugaya to fight at full strength. Shawlong asks what the limits are, and Hitsugaya replies that they reduce the strength of the Captains and Lieutenants entering the Human World to 20% of their true strength. Hitsugaya then prepares his technique "Ryusenken" on Shawlong, the latter claiming the withdrawal of his team, but is caught and frozen in the core of the attack. However, just after Shawlong's defeat, Hitsugaya faints, exhausted, due to his severe injuries.

Hitsugaya is later seen talking through a screen with Yamamoto, who gives an account of Aizen's plans for the King's Key, then allows Hinamori to speak. Hitsugaya is surprised to see her standing there and asks if she shouldn't be resting instead. She tries to persuade him that she is fine, although she doesn't really seem to be. She also apologizes for not believing in him and for attacking him. Hitsugaya tells her not to worry, declaring that he has already forgotten, and advises her to go back to bed to get rid of her dark circles. Hinamori thanks him for forgiving her, and Hitsugaya jokes that she looks like a child, and if she doesn't sleep, she won't grow up anymore. Hinamori yells at him, saying that he is not in a good position to talk about growth.

He then cuts her off, reminding her that she should not call him "Hitsugaya-kun" but "Captain Hitsugaya". She then seriously asks if Hitsugaya will fight Aizen. He tells her yes, and she asks him if he is going to kill Aizen, imploring him to save him. She explains that she understands that what Aizen is doing is wrong, but she bets that he has a good reason. She is sure that Ichimaru or something else is forcing him to commit his actions. She is then quickly rendered unconscious by Yamamoto, to whom he hands over his care to his lieutenant, Chōjiro Sasakibe. The latter apologizing and stating that he was only respecting her wish to speak, but it may have been too soon. Hitsugaya is then irritated by the state that Aizen has left Hinamori.

Some time later, the city of Karakura is attacked for the second time by Arrancars. Hitsugaya confronts the Tenth Espada Yammy Riyalgo. Hitsugaya's Shikai freezes the Espada, but he quickly frees himself. Yammy notes that his attack was rather "refreshing". Hitsugaya then realizes that even his Shikai at full strength is not enough to kill Espada. Their fight is interrupted by the Sixth Espada Luppi, who insists on fighting all opponents at once, and releases his Resurrección. Releasing his Bankai, he is at first unable to defend himself against Luppi's attacks, being knocked to the ground with one blow, but returns with his Bankai in perfect condition and explains his abilities. Luppi's inattention gave Hitsugaya enough time to craft his final attack, Sennen Hyōrō, and save his subordinates. Luppi escaped death thanks to Negación, and vowed to kill Hitsugaya.

Upon learning that Orihime Inoue has followed the Arrancars to Hueco Mundo, Hitsugaya and his team return to the Soul Society to help prepare for the war against Aizen.

Arch of the False City of Karakura

When Aizen and his three most powerful Espadas attack the fake city of Karakura Town, Hitsugaya, Matsumoto, as well as all the Captains except those in the Hueco Mundo and some Lieutenants, are seen waiting for Aizen's arrival. After the defeat of the Fraccion of Baraggan Luisenbarn, all the remaining Shinigamis and all the remaining Arrancars are fighting in open warfare. Hitsugaya and Matsumoto confront Tia Harribel and her Fraccion. Matsumoto offers Hitsugaya to take the three Fraccions so that he can fight the Espada without being interrupted. When Hinamori takes part in the fight, Hitsugaya has a flashback of when Hinamori implores him to save Aizen, until Harribel asks him why his reiatsu was messy. He replies that he doesn't understand what she's talking about, although he wonders what Hinamori is doing on the battlefield.

Hitsugaya's fight against Harribel seems to take a different turn when the latter senses the death of her Fraccions. Harribel takes a slight advantage, and opens his vest, revealing his rank as the 3rd Espada which is tattooed on his right breast. Hitsugaya is shocked to discover that she is only 3rd considering her great strength. When she mocks him that she hasn't shown her full strength yet, Hitsugaya quickly uses his Bankai, trying to destabilize her. Harribel then rushes to him and starts his attack while they get closer and cross their blades.

During this encounter, Harribel sends Tōshirō to the ground, taunting him by asking "if this is the true strength of a Captain". She promises him that she will end this battle and releases his Resurrección. After the summoning, Tōshirō noted that her appearance had not changed as much as he had predicted, but that underestimating her would be a fatal mistake. Before he could even notice, Harribel sliced through the right side from Hitsugaya's shoulder. Believing him defeated, she turned her attention to the Captain-Commander, but before she could do anything against him, she was attacked by an unknown assailant. Harribel dodged it and saw that it was an uninjured Hitsugaya. Confused, she turns around and discovers that she has cut an ice clone. Hitsugaya explains that he can only use this technique once and that he was waiting to use it later, but Harribel's sudden increase in power and speed was not expected. He also said that the strength of a captain should not be underestimated.

During their fight, Hitsugaya informs him that he can use as much water as he wants, telling him that it can never reach him. Hitsugaya then attacks Harribel. Harribel then melts Hitsugaya's ice into water, reversing the situation, and dictates the law of battle. She then attacks him with her melted ice. Their exchange of attacks continues and Hitsugaya dictates another law of battle. Harribel then throws a Cero at him, and Hitsugaya notes that it was rather weak. He concludes that the reason his Cero was weak is because they are both waiting for one of them to make a decisive move. Hitsugaya then explains that he doesn't have to wait to have water at his disposal, as his Zanpakutō is the most powerful ice Zanpakutō, stating that all water is his weapon and all the heavens are under his control.

He then reveals a technique never before seen: Hyōten Hyakkasō. Hitsugaya then asks for Espada's name, in which she answers as Tia Harribel. Hitsugaya informs her of her name and rank before attacking her again. As the sky darkens, snowflakes begin to fall. Harribel tries to melt the snow with his Hirviendo technique, but as his sword touches the snow, ice flowers bloom on his body. Hitsugaya then declares that once the hundred ice flowers bloom, she will die, and is sorry, but he cannot let her take revenge for the death of her subordinates.

Seeing a huge creature emerging from the Garganta with Wonderweiss, Hitsugaya witnesses the events that took place. Wonderweiss lets out a shrill cry that shatters the pillar of ice in which Harribel is trapped. This one is released and throws a black glance on Hitsugaya surprised. Hitsugaya is alerted to Aizen's presence when the giant Hollow creature extinguishes the fire prison in which he, Gin and Tōsen were trapped. When the Vizards arrive, Hitsugaya has no idea who they might be. Hitsugaya is later shocked by the huge number of Gillian-class menos coming out of the giant Hollow's mouth. After the Vizards reveal their masks and easily kill the Gillians, Hitsugaya commented on how strong they are. While he contemplated Komamura's declaration to fight alongside the Vizards, Harribel attempted to attack Hitsugaya while his back was turned. Sensing it, he rushes his hand to his Zanpakutō, but Vizards Lisa Yadōmaru and Hiyori Sarugaki intervene and reject the attack before Hitsugaya has time to draw his Zanpakutō.

Following this, he notes that there seems to be no time to judge whether the Vizards are allies or enemies, and decides to fight them as well. Hitsugaya asks Hiyori if he can ask her a question, but she tells him that she does not intend to reveal their identities to him. He tells her that he doesn't mind, and that he wanted to ask her a favor. He asks them if they can take care of Harribel since he wants to go and fight Aizen. Hiyori then starts to shout at him, asking him if he was crazy since the Vizards want to kill Aizen too and he was already fighting the Espada before they arrived. Hitsugaya realizes that he was acting irrationally and was panicking. Hiyori continues to yell at him until he apologizes to her and asks her how a kid like him can be a captain. When she calls him a "dwarf", Hitsugaya grabs her by the neck and yells at her that she is smaller than him. Their argument continues until they are distracted by Lisa who rushes to Harribel alone. He, Hiyori and Lisa attack Harribel with their Shikais which create a huge explosion. However, their fight is interrupted by the intervention of Aizen who cuts Harribel. Shocked, Hitsugaya watches his opponent killed by Aizen who now challenges all the remaining Shinigamis and Vizards.

Hitsugaya is seen with some unoccupied Captains and Vizards protecting Ichigo Kurosaki from Aizen and his Shikai. Tōshirō is the first to attack, claiming that if no one decides to attack, the fight will never begin. He denies Aizen's taunt about him being reckless, stating that causing his opponents to miss their opportunities to attack is one of Aizen's specialties. As Kyoraku then attacks Aizen's flank, Aizen compliments Hitsugaya for at least being wise enough not to attack him alone. Hitsugaya asks him what he said earlier, about swords devoid of hatred are like eagles without wings, and then declares that placing only responsibility in the blades is what being a Captain means. Captains do not swing swords full of hate and tells Aizen that he does not have what it takes to be a Captain. Aizen retorts that it's funny to hear such words from him, since Hitsugaya is the Captain who has more hate in him than any other Captain after what happened to Hinamori. As Kyoraku attacks once again, and Hitsugaya releases his Bankai and admits that his sword is full of hatred. He tells Aizen that he came to Karakura Town to kill him. After his confession of his hate-filled blade, Hitsugaya declares his motives: "I don't care if I lose my position as Captain, if it allows me to kill you". He warns Aizen to get ready and starts to attack, but without success. After having failed his attack, Komamura and Love attack together Aizen. Komamura apologizes for their intervention, but Hitsugaya informs him that he never intended to fight alone.Tōshirō Hitsugaya

Soifon then attacks, and Hitsugaya manages to freeze Sōsuke's arm and Zanpakutō, much to his surprise. After Aizen is attacked by Soifon and Shunsui, Hitsugaya declares that everything is over and rushes to him. The latter notes that he is too young and that he rushes too much, which is his biggest defect. At this moment, he notices that Shinji Hirako, standing on one side, releases his Shikai, Sakanade and smiles. Aizen realizes too late that he has already been affected by Shinji's Shikai and his ability to reverse all directions, making Hitsugaya's attack from the back and not the front, allowing him to stab Aizen in the back.

When Ichigo yells at the Shinigami and Vizards, asking them what they are doing, Tōshirō realizes with horror that he did not stab Aizen but Hinamori. Carrying her for a moment, he then lets out a howl of rage after hearing Hinamori say "Shiro-chan.... Why?", and rushes at Aizen once again. While Shunsui told him to wait, Aizen took advantage of Hitsugaya's blind rage to slice him and the surrounding opponents. This attack caused Hitsugaya to lose his left arm and most of his left leg and began to fall into the city below him. After this happened, Aizen declared to him and the other defeated Shinigamis that he would let them live to see the conclusion of this war.

Ten days later, Aizen is captured and Hitsugaya is completely healed, beginning to train regularly in a secluded cave, ashamed of his inability to protect Hinamori even though she survived. Hitsugaya is determined to become stronger and achieve finer control of Hyōrinmaru.

    Relations

Hitsugaya has met several characters in the series. The most important of these relationships are listed below:

    Isshin Shiba Kurosaki

When he was younger, Tôshirô was 3rd seat of the 10th division, we also know that Isshin took part in the training of Bankai of this last one, we suppose that after Isshin disappeared because of Aizen Sôsuke's fault, Tôshirô pofifnished his training to become Isshin's replacement.

    Grandmother(Obaa-chan)

When they were children in Rugonkai, Hitsugaya lived with Hinamori and his grandmother. He believed that only these two people were not afraid of him at that time, while many people said that he was "cold as ice". He says he loves his grandmother because she never thought so. She sometimes sends him amanatto in his divisional quarters.

    Momo Hinamori

Hitsugaya and Hinamori are childhood friends and lived together in District 1 of Rukongai. When Hinamori entered the Shinigami Academy, Hitsugaya was a bit upset because they could not see each other as they used to. They have a very close relationship and Hitsugaya often worries about her and cares about his friend's well-being. He threatened to kill Ichimaru if he dropped a single drop of Hinamori's blood, and had fought against him even after Hinamori attacked him, believing that Hitsugaya was the real killer of Aizen. He also has a lot of hatred against Aizen for betraying Hinamori and is even capable of losing his position as Captain to kill him.

    Rangiku Matsumoto

Although they have very different personalities, Hitsugaya and Matsumoto have a very close relationship. Matsumoto was the one who convinced Hitsugaya to become a Shinigami and enter the Academy in order to learn to control his uncontrollable Reiatsu. During the time they lived together as Captain and Lieutenant, previously 3rd seat and Lieutenant, Matsumoto became very open with Hitsugaya, which often annoyed the latter.

    Jūshirō Ukitake

Ukitake and Hitsugaya have a lot of respect towards each other, but in the Shinigami Cup omakes, it was revealed that Ukitake sometimes gives Hitsugaya candy. When Tōshirō asks Ukitake why he does this, he tells him that their names are similar and contain "Shiro" in them, which means "white", and they both have white hair. Ukitake also gave a statue of Hitsugaya of the same size as a gift for his birthday.

    • The other Captains tend to offer him sweets, Jushiro being because of the end of their first name, but Hitsugaya is unaware of the reasons of the others, such as Mayuri during an Omake.
