Appearance
As a child, Toya had a round face and unruly red hair that rose in clumps around his head, falling down his forehead in an uneven fringe. His hair then began to turn white as he grew. His eyes were azure, and oval in shape, and he was depicted with a neutral expression. He also appears to have worn a gakuran jacket. He is seen wearing a simple t-shirt and long shorts.
He was particularly frail and small for his age, being shorter and thinner than Fuyumi and Natsuo although he was older. In the anime, he has red hair, probably to remind his alter and/or his relationship with Endeavor.

In the past, Toya was shown playing with his brother and sister, indicating that he was on good terms with them. He seemed to have had a close bond with Natsuo. He appeared to be much more jovial in nature before and during the early days of his training with Endeavor, but Endeavor's growing jealousy and frustration with All Might, as well as Toya's inability to use his alter without getting burned, led to the hero's mistreatment of his older son. Toya then became sad, not to say depressed, often asking his brother in tears why he existed.
From a young age, Toya was trained by his father because he possessed a fire alter even more powerful than Enji's Hellflame. It is implied that Toya was trained by his father as Shoto, Enji even considered him "almost perfect". However, due to his weak constitution, which he got from his mother, Rei, he was considered a failure, like his first brother Natsuo and his sister Fuyumi, and was like them separated from their younger brother, Shoto. He played ball with them at some point in their childhood. According to Fuyumi, he always played with Natsuo, and the two were very close. When he was young, Toya often went to his little brother in tears and asked him why he existed.
An accident happened to Toya on Sekoto Hill, Endeavor's training place, some time after Rei's training. A fire broke out, and burned down everything, the only remains being a part of his lower jaw. Since then, he is little talked about. Natsuo thinks that his father has a link with the accident, he is persuaded that Enji killed, or caused the death of Toya, but his role in the accident remains vague.
After the accident, Toya survived, even though everyone thinks he is dead. He has spent a good part of his life preparing his revenge against his father for all the evil he did to him and his family.

Years later, during a family meal, he is mentioned by Natsuo when talking about Enji's abuse. During the Endeavor Agency Arc, after another family disappointment, Enji carries a meal tray to a funeral altar in a room in the house. In the center, surrounded by some flowers, is a photo of a young Toya in a black gakuran seat, revealing that he is dead, to the world.
Enji wonders what he can do for his family in front of him, and admits that he is still having the same dream, we don't know which one, at the moment. He regrets Toya's absence, and wishes he were here.
Relations
Enji Todoroki
At first, Toya's relationship with his father was actually relatively healthy. Endeavor didn't seem to put his older son through the same rigorous training he did with Shoto. He even spoke more casually with Toya, who was also very excited to learn all of his father's secret techniques.
However, when Endeavor was informed by a doctor that Toya's body actually gave him great resistance to freezing temperatures, he quickly realized that his son could not outperform All Might. Enji didn't want to see his son get seriously injured physically but even with his warnings, Toya continued to train to become a hero and hurt himself with his own fire alter. In an attempt to make him give up his dream and give birth to a child with the perfect alter, Enji had two more children until Shoto was born. This only made Toya more determined than ever to train and be recognized by his father for his efforts. Enji tried his best to get Toya to give up and find something else in life, but despite his best efforts, Toya could not give up his dream of becoming the next number one, much to Enji's frustration and anguish.
Because he inherited his mother's weak constitution, Toya was eventually considered a failure and neglected by his father along with his younger siblings Fuyumi and Natsuo because Enji chose to focus his efforts solely on Shoto. Toya was still determined to make his father recognize him and therefore continued to train his alter. After he had a growth spurt, his flames turned blue. Toya excitedly went to see his father and asked him to come to Sekoto Hill (Sekoto Peak) to see a surprise while crying and sorting his hair as he expressed the hope that seeing his improvement would make Enji happy to have had Toya as a child.
When his father did not show up at Sekoto Peak, Toya was very devastated and heartbroken which caused his flames to go out of control resulting in a fire in which Toya would be incinerated. However, Toya managed to survive, and as a result of the constant abuse that led to Toya being abandoned by Enji, he hid in the shadows and secretly observed Endeavor's actions from afar, planning to take revenge on him for the torment he suffered as a child. This is the birth of the villain known as Dabi.
Rei Todoroki
Unlike her father, Toya seemed to be very close to her mother Rei in her childhood according to Natsuo and Fuyumi. It is also mentioned by Natsuo that Toya's "death" greatly devastated Rei as her mental state had already been severely affected by her husband's past abuse. Many years later, Rei would still think of Toya even though he did not know that he was still alive as Dabi.
As their family memories show, Rei loved and cared a lot about her eldest son having worried a lot about him when she learned of his weak body constitution to have resistance to ice and fire like his father. She was even more concerned when she saw that his body was beginning to accumulate burns almost daily due to his insistence on training despite everything. Later, realizing Toya's stubbornness, Rei turned out to be very distressed by her husband proposing his plan to make her "give up" having realized that her son was already aware that her husband wanted to have more children and very worried about the mental anguish he would go through.
Although Rei loved her son very much, Toya did not share a great bond with her. He was aware of why his mother and father got married and that Rei had essentially been sold by her family. Because of this, Toya thought very little of his mother and did not rely on her for anything, believing that she was good for nothing. When Rei tried to get Toya to reconsider what he really wanted to do in life and look beyond his father, Toya coldly rebuked him reminding him of why she married Enji and why he was born, also blaming Rei for his problems.
At the time of the Paranormal Liberation Front war, Rei is completely horrified when Dabi reveals his true identity as her long lost son whom she thought she lost many years ago.
Shoto Todoroki
Shoto always watched him playing with Fuyumi and Natsuo, often wanting to join them because they were having fun but his father prevented any interaction between them because they had to train and become stronger. However when Shoto was born, Toya started to feel strong animosity towards him because he considered Shoto as his replacement for their father's dream. Driven by anger, envy and frustration, when Enji begged to find another occupation in life, Toya asked his father to look at him and furiously attacked Shoto while he was still a baby.

Toya would later come to deeply regret his attempted attack on Shoto, understanding that he had done nothing wrong and was just a poor innocent baby at the time. As seen in his plea with his father, Toya first considered Shoto as a kind of rival to outdo All Might and gain their father's affection.
Currently, Dabi and Shoto share an ambiguous relationship although Shoto still seems to remember him slightly through his memories. It is also unclear whether Shoto blames Enji for Toya's accident, as the rest of his siblings are at odds with him over it. The two brothers will confront each other when the Genesis Squadron invades the Bestial Forest, to kindap Katsuki Bakugo, looking at Shoto's helpless expression in front of him during their confrontation, Dabi mocks him for not having succeeded to save Katsuki while calling him by his full name. This suggests a sense of mockery and pity towards his brother.
Shoto was also very shocked when he recognized Dabi when the latter revealed himself in public during his attempted attack on Endeavor and Hawks. However, he only knew Dabi by his villainous name and not as his brother. At the time of the Paranormal Liberation Front war, Dabi happily reveals his true identity as Toya to Endeavor and Shoto by reaching their location on Gigantomachia without hesitation. He also admits that he originally wanted to kill Shoto once he had succeeded in his heroic career, considering him Endeavor's little puppet. This revelation horrifies and shocks Shoto to see his older brother as an infamous villain. Dabi doesn't seem to think of him as human because he describes him as a puppet or a masterpiece. This shows that he now only sees Shoto as an extension of Endeavor and a target of his resentment. When the two fight, Dabi has no problem fighting Shoto, coldly stating that he no longer feels anything for anyone and thinking that he could kill Shoto right in front of Endeavor to make him suffer. However, it is also shown that Dabi only thought of this to make his father despair because when Endeavor was unconscious, he stopped fighting Shoto only because Endeavor was not looking. Although he seemed to care only about despairing Endeavor, it is suggested that Dabi hates Shoto even more than he did from the day he was born just because he inherited an ice alter that allows him to regulate his flames while he inherited only his mother's low tolerance for fire. It is possible that Dabi shows a strong jealousy towards his younger brother, which is the reason why he wanted to kill him first.
Fuyumi Todoroki
When he was born, Toya was happy with the new addition to the family. When they were small, Toya confided to him his desire to be recognized in the eyes of their father. In turn, Fuyumi showed great concern when she saw her older brother's burn marks and therefore asked him not to push his limits although Toya angrily ignored her pleas and simply said that a girl would not understand his desires and ambitions, determined to surpass All Might.
Despite being a "failed creation" like himself and Natsuo, Toya did not share a particularly positive relationship with Fuyumi. Although he would interact with her rather well and play with her and Natsuo, Toya would instead choose to confide his personal thoughts and doubts to Natsuo. When Natsuo told Toya to talk to Fuyumi about his doubts instead of him from time to time, Toya rejected the idea, believing that his mother and Fuyumi were no good because of their constant attempts to dissuade him from training his alter and his dream of becoming a hero who surpasses All Might. Nowadays, Fuyumi mourns his "death" and prays at his altar. Unlike Natsuo, she does not seem to blame their father for his "death". However, when Dabi stood up in public and tried to attack Endeavor and Hawks, Fuyumi seemed very shocked by this revelation even though he didn't know her true identity at that time. Like the rest of the family, Fuyimi would be deeply shocked and saddened by Dabi's release and the revelation that he had become a murderer who had killed over thirty innocent people and a known villain.
Natsuo Todoroki
As seen in the family's past, Toya did not initially have a good impression of his younger brother when he was born because he realized what their father was trying to do by having more children. Despite this, Toya and Natsuo became extremely close to each other, to the point of being inseparable caf they always played together as children. Toya would also tell Natsuo all about his inner thoughts and troubles and lean on him for emotional comfort. This implies that he felt a sense of camaraderie with Natsuo because he considered them both to be the "failed creations" of their father. To Toya, Natsuo was the only one who could understand him and the only one he could talk to, but when Natuso would suggest that he talk to Fuyumi about his problems instead of him from time to time, Toya was deeply hurt by Natsuo's involvement, pushing him away to the point of crying.
His supposed death, which occurred shortly after his mother's departure, greatly affected Natsuo, causing him to feel a great deal of resentment towards him, whom he considers to be primarily responsible for what happened to Toya. Nowadays, Natsuo still remembers Toya and still can't forgive his father. When Dabi woke up as Toya son of Endeavor, Natsuo was shocked although he didn't know his real identity before.
At the time of the Paranormal Liberation Front War, Dabi mentions Natsuo when he gives his speech to Endeavor, implying that he still remembers him fondly despite the fact that they haven't seen each other for a long time. Sadly, when Shoto criticizes him for sending a villain who almost killed Natsuo, whom he loved and depended on, Dabi replies that he was sad that he didn't die because Endeavor would have suffered more, only caring about inflicting as much pain on Endeavor as possible even if it meant sacrificing his family and himself.

Toya is composed of 2 kanji: 燈 矢. The kanji 燈 (tô) means "light, lamp". This kanji contains the Japanese radical 火 which means fire. The kanji 矢 (ya) means "arrow".
Todoroki (轟) comes from the word 轟く (todoroku) which means "to roar, to be known, to be famous", which is to the attribute and doctrine of Enji Todoroki.
His alternate name in Japanese, Dabi (荼毘) means "Cremation." This is also the name given to his alter by fans.
Since everyone is cremated in Japan, there is an obvious parallel between his pseudonym, Dabi ("cremation" translated into Crematorium in French), his power, and his situation as a person who is supposed to be dead.
The only part of his body found after the incident was a lower jaw, which turned out not to belong to him.
He uses mostly his left hand.
He hates fish.
He can easily get sick in the car.
There is a difference in his hair color between the manga and the anime. In the manga, his hair is white, while in the anime, it is red. It is very likely that the change is due to Horikoshi, the author, who is very involved in the anime adaptation.
That said, it is revealed that Toya's hair was originally red, then turned white. In the only appearance common to the anime and the manga, her hair is already white.
In reality, only hereditary specificities or genetic diseases can cause such an early bleaching of hair. Canitie (hair whitening) can also be traumatic.
In the end credits of season 4 "Shout Baby", there is a burnt photo with the photos of the Todoroki family referring to Toya.
This photo appears on the screen with those of the Todoroki family and Hawks as a child.
The photo of Toya is in the center of a mortuary altar, a type of altar common in Japan, where the photo, and for a certain period of time, the ashes of a deceased person are kept. Bringing food to the altar is a symbolic gesture, as the two main religions of Japan, Buddhism and Shintoism, believe in reincarnation.
