The story of Captain Tsubasa

Manga Capitaine Tsubasa (1981)

Before the Captain Tsubasa series, a one-year-old Tsubasa was miraculously saved by his soccer ball in a truck accident when he was barely able to walk. Tsubasa had held the ball in front of him to cushion the impact. The force of the bump blew him away, but he was able to stand up with the ball. Since then, he considers the ball his "best friend", hence his motto "the ball is my friend!".

Years later, an 11 year old Tsubasa entered the Nankatsu City Elementary School, a school with a soccer club, having barely had any real friends before since his previous school did not have a club at all. Immediately after his arrival, he set out to explore the new town and arrived at the local soccer field, where Ryo Ishizaki and Genzo Wakabayashi were fighting for the right to use the field. Impressed by Shutetsu's genius goalkeeper, Tsubasa decided to challenge him to a duel. After a short confrontation in the street where Tsubasa pushed Wakabayashi's shot under the bus and into the goalkeeper's arms, then the duel began. Tsubasa dribbled the whole Shutetsu B and headed to Wakabayashi , who was hit, then Roberto Hongo , a former member of the Brazilian national team , made a cross to the inside, then Tsubasa made a diving header and finally scored in the goal.

Joining the Nankatsu School Football Club, Tsubasa first had a welcome match, which is the opposite of the B team match. He starts alone in defense against the rest of the Nankatsu team. The team has to prevent Tsubasa from scoring for 5 minutes and he can't shoot from a distance. A few hours before the soccer game against Shutetsu, he won the 200m race by dribbling the ball. Taro Misaki with whom he formed such a perfect combination that they were both nicknamed the "Golden Combi", and the main supporter Sanae Nakazawa who quickly had a crush on him. Chosen for the city team in the national championship, Tsubasa and his friends faced powerful rivals such as Kojiro Hyuga, who will remain one of Tsubasa's greatest rivals in Japan, Ken Wakashimazu , Jun Misugi and Hikaru Matsuyama . Tsubasa finally won against them to become the champion of the national junior tournament, however, he could not go to Brazil with Roberto, because the latter secretly left alone, not before leaving a book with his special notes in order to teach him to refine his techniques. in order to aim to become a professional soccer player. He was scouted to play for the Toho Academy as a playmaker, but he refused.

Boys' fighting bow

Two years later, Tsubasa, along with his former companions, had already won the national college tournament twice. He was looking for a third consecutive championship (V3) in the next tournament. However, many of his former rivals were on their way to the title this time, especially Kojiro Hyuga, who was eager to win after two losses to Tsubasa. In addition, there were also new talented players such as Shun Nitta , Makoto Soda , Hiroshi Jito and Mitsuru Sano . Their goal was to destroy Nankatsu's dream of getting a V3 and win the title for themselves. During the tournament, Tsubasa was seriously injured in the shoulder and leg. He dislocated his left shoulder after thwarting Tachibana Twins' Skylab Hurricane and wrapping Masao, so that he wouldn't land on his head, forcing him to take a sick day. He managed to win against Hirado of Jito with his newly learned technique, the Drive Shot , managing to tie the match 3-3 before winning with the help of Kisugi and Taki.

In the match against Furano , he was able to cope with all these injuries and managed to win against Matsuyama with a Miracle Drive Shot , thanks to his determination, he managed to lead his team to the final, where Nankatsu and Toho faced each other for the title for the third time in a row. After extra time, neither of the rivals could emerge victorious and the match ended in a 4-4 draw, with both teams being declared winners.

Boys Challenge Arc J

As Tsubasa was injured in the national college tournament, he could not participate in the training camp of Japan Jr . He could only join while Japan had a training match against Hamburg , but Hyuga and Matsuyama did not allow him to play, saying that it would be unfair to all the players who joined the training camp but were not selected. Without Tsubasa, Japan lost to Hamburger SV Jr. and Bremen Jr.

After that, Japan was supposed to have another match against Italy . However, seeing the match of All Japan against Bremen, Italy decided that Japan was not a worthy opponent to play and boycotted the match. Irritated by this, Tsubasa challenged Italy, outplayed them all, and then scored. Tsubasa was recognized after that and was allowed to play.

Japan won the remaining three training matches and Matsuyama decided to give the captain's mark to Tsubasa, saying that Tsubasa was best suited for it. Against all odds, Tsubasa and All Japan beat Italy and Argentina to qualify for the knockout stage, and then France Jr. and West Germany to become champions. Later, Tsubasa went to Brazil for his dream.

Tsubasa, together with Pepe, a boy he met during the selection test of Sao Paulo FC, was chosen in the youth team of Sao Paulo. Some time later, Tsubasa qualified for the best team. Tsubasa returned to Japan once after being away for 3 years to play against the Dutch youth. He returned to Brazil soon after, to compete against Santana and CR Flamengo . Even though Santana used superior techniques to Tsubasa during the match, his emotionless soccer was not able to overcome Tsubasa's style of play. Tsubasa returned to Japan for the second time just before the start of the World Youth Championship Asian preliminaries. However, upon arriving at the training camp, Tsubasa learned a shocking truth that Japan's new coach, Minato Gamo , forced seven top players - Hyuga, Misaki, Soda, Jito, Nitta and Tachibanas - to leave the team, Wakashimazu also left after a quarrel with former coach Mikami over the position of regular goalkeeper, and the remaining players were exhausted after Gamo's harsh training. On the other hand, Misugi had fully recovered to strengthen the defense (and able to do Tsubasa's Drive Shot ) and even while Wakabayashi was heavily injured; he was replaced by Morisaki in case All Japan Youth had serious problems. Katagiri said that Tsubasa was the only one capable of playing a game at that time, but Tsubasa asked those who had not given up their dreams to stand up, which all the players did right after that.

1st Asian qualifying tournament

In the first round of the Asian preliminaries, as all players except Tsubasa were covered with bruises from severe training, Japan faced some difficulties in the first two matches, although they finally managed to win. In the third match, however, they faced a tough opponent, Thailand Youth . Japan managed to score the first goal thanks to Misaki's video, but Thailand quickly dominated the game after that and scored four goals in return. Tsubasa even had to leave the field on a stretcher because of the play of the Thai captain, Bunnag . However, thanks to Wakabayashi and the arrival of new top player Shingo Aoi , and the return of Tsubasa to the field, Japan reversed the score and advanced to the second round.

World Youth Tournament

During the tournament, he faced several fierce teams, such as Uruguay Youth in the classification phase, Sweden Youth in the quarterfinals, Netherlands Youth in the semifinals and finally Brazil Youth in the final, where he had to face his rival Carlos Santana who was led by his coach Roberto . At the end of the arc, Tsubasa asked Sanae to marry him and everyone from All Japan Youth , as well as former classmates and friends attended the ceremony.

In this arc, we still see him fighting in the final of "La Liga" in Spain against Real Madrid CF and Natureza his eternal rival.

Golden Bow-23

Tsubasa does not appear in this saga as the main character, since while Japan U-22 was playing in the qualification phase, Tsubasa was playing for FC Barcelona in order to get the cup of "La Liga" in Spain.

Fierce fighting abroad

Kaigai Gekito Hen en Liga

Arc of the rising sun

Olympic Tournament in Madrid

This is a major arc for Tsubasa, where he remembered his promise to Misaki to get both the gold medal for Japan. In this arc, Sanae is expecting Tsubasa's babies by the end of the tournament. This competition is held in Spain, and Olympic Japan was able to pass its ranking stage.

Etymology

His name translates to "Big Sky Wings." Tsubasa (翼) means "wing" and her last name "Ozora" (大空) means a big sky. Most of the characters call her Tsubasa (her first name) because of the ease with which the author calls her that instead of Ozora. In a way, the last technique that Roberto Hongo taught him, known as Skywing Shot , is inspired by the meaning of his name.
