A Zanpakutō (Literally "Soul Slicer") is the primary weapon of Shinigamis, Arrancars and Vizards. The art of wielding a Zanpakutō is called Zanjutsu (Literally "Art of the Zanpakutō" or "Sword Art").
Zanpakutō were invented by Ôetsu Nimaiya, one of the members of the Zero Division.

Zanpakutō of the Shinigamis
so after the first release of the latter, the Shinigami breathes part of his soul into his weapon as long as he uses it and even just by staying close to it. Zanpakutō are considered to have a unique name, a unique soul (represented in some form, also unique, in the Shinigami's inner world), and unique powers, though some may be similar. The Shinigami will continue to progress, accompanied by this Zanpakutō until one day, the Zanpakutō will address him directly and if he trusts him enough, give him his name...
Once a Zanpakutō has been released for the first time, with a command phrase followed by the name of the Zanpakutō, it will change form, unfold its powers, and may even, once sealed, have a different appearance than a Katana.
Zanpakutō of the Arrancars
The Zanpakutō of the Arrancars are very different from those of the Shinigami, these blades were not designed from Asauchi, at least, there is no information to say so. The Arrancars' Zanpakutō contain the "old form" and "powers" of Hollow before Arrancarization, in sealed form. This process allows Arrancars to evolve to gain Shinigami powers, but can also combine them with their former abilities... This is called Resurrection.
When an Arrancar speaks the name of his sword, he regains his former form and powers with an increase in power and keeping his human form.
Additional information
-
A Zanpakutō is often considered an "individual" since it has a soul. It cannot be replaced. Therefore, if broken, Zanpakutō will gradually repair themselves, but cannot be released during this process. However, this is NOT true with a Zanpakutō in Bankai condition, if it is broken, the weapon no longer replenishes itself. Recent evidence tends to indicate that Renji Abarai's and Ikkaku Madarame's Bankai were badly damaged, and even if they were "reconstituted", the damage done is irreparable. The only known exceptions to this rule are Komamura Sajin's Bankai (because of the link between them: if the bankai is hit, Komamura Sanjin is also injured) and Mayuri Kurotsuchi's Bankai (for the latter, there is no evidence in the manga that it had to be reforged after its destruction against Ishida Uryu).
-
The size of a Zanpakutō reflects the spiritual power of its owner. Most Zanpakutō would be the size of a building, unless perfectly mastered. Captains have perfect mastery of this aspect and can alter the size of their swords to keep them at a respectable size.
-
It is possible for a Shinigami to pierce the chest of a human at a specific point, this has the consequence of transmitting part of his powers temporarily. However, if the human doesn't already have a significant (and latent) power, he might simply die. This is why it is forbidden to transmit one's powers without prior permission to anyone.
-
Each Zanpakutō has a different and unique name.
-
The nature of the power can sometimes give clues to the personality of its user.
-
Each Zanpakutō has a manifested form in the inner world of the Shinigami, these two can communicate and evolve their relationship, trust grows, but so does power as it is this "spirit" that teaches the Shinigami new techniques.
-
There is a very rare situation where two carriers can have an identical Zanpakutō. Soul Society law forces them to duel and one must kill the other or both be executed.
-
No matter how big a Zanpakutō is, being made up largely of the Reaitsu of the Shinigami wielding it, it will never weigh anything. So notions of weight are not an issue, and even if it is huge and bulky, the Zanpakutō will be relatively easy to use.
-
No Zanpakutō has a different ability depending on its stage of release: if in Shikai it is a fire Zanpakutō, then in Bankai it will remain a fire Zanpakutō.
Get a Zanpakuto
Most Shinigami (about 6,000 soldiers in all of Soul Society) carry what is called an Asauchi (浅打ち, "Shallow Hit" in English or "Feint", "Useless Hit" in French, roughly), it is a soulless sword unable to change shape. Asauchi have no other name and rarely vary from the shape of a Katana. They are used to perform Konso and purify the Hollow souls they slice.
Zanpakutō are obtained as Asauchi as soon as a Shinigami enters the Academy and evolve along with their wielders.
Zanpakuto training
Often mistakenly considered as a sword handling art and nothing more, Zanjutsu offers other disciplines, one of them is Jinzen, a particular meditation posture that allows the Shinigami to communicate with his Zanpakutō and improve his relationship with it.
Jinzen (刃禅, "Blade Zen or Sword Meditation" in English or simply "Sword Meditation" in French) is thus a trance-like state that allows one to obtain Shikai, sometimes Bankai, new techniques and other things having to do with the Zanpakutō.
The Shinigami is immersed in his inner world for the duration of the trance and will sometimes have to fight with the spirit of his Zanpakutō to learn something in return. All injuries in this inner world reverberate through the outer body.
Communication and Personality
The relationship between a Shinigami and his Zanpakutō is usually very deep and is based on mutual trust. If one of the two does not trust the other, then it is possible that when the Shinigami calls upon his Zanpakutō, even by saying his name several times, he will get nothing from the latter. This is easily explained: in the inner world, the Zanpakutō waits patiently to be called. If it does not trust its wielder, then it will not hear his voice. In this case, the Shinigami no longer has access to its powers, like the Shikai, and may be in danger.
Since Zanpakutō have a "soul", they also have their own personality that defines them all. They have moods and desires, just like anyone else. Their behavior towards their owners therefore varies depending on the personalities and treatment of the owners towards them.
Note a telling example: Yumichika Ayasegawa voluntarily restrains the powers of his Zanpakuto, Ruri'iro Kujaku, by calling him Fuji Kujaku instead, knowing perfectly well that the latter doesn't like the color lavender (Fuji). His Zanpakuto answers by sulking and takes only a form of sickle with four branches instead of revealing his true nature. Yumichika does this so that the members of his division don't know that he has a Kido type Zanpakuto, which is considered as a perjury in the 11th Division, the one of sword fighting.
Inner world
The inner world of each Shinigami is a representation of his thoughts and heart. It is where the embodiment of the Zanpakutō lives. A Shinigami will often go there, whether via dreams or via meditation to communicate with his Zanpakutō. Like any Zanpakutō, each Inner World is different from one Shinigami to another. They are all unique.
General Powers
-
Konsō ("Soul Burial" in English and "Enterrement de l'âme" in French): Main power of a Shinigami with his sword. All he has to do is lightly touch the forehead of a soul (a Plus) with the tip of his sword's hilt to instantly send it to Soul Society. The soul is purified in the process.
-
Hollow Cleanse: A passive ability that is applied whenever a Shinigami slices and kills a Hollow. This purifies it of its sins and sends it directly to Soul Society or Hell if the Hollow had committed sins while alive.
The Zanpakutō is capable of shape-shifting. Once its name is spoken, preceded by a specific aria, it undergoes physical transformations that can give it all sorts of appearances, such as a knife, a hammer, or even something completely intangible, like fire or water. The first liberation is called the Shikai (Initial Liberation) and unlocks a "manifestation" of the Shinigami's power, obtained after the Zanpakutō voluntarily reveals its name, so practicing Jinzen is necessary to obtain this first transformation.
There is a second, very rare level of liberation, the Bankai (Total Liberation or Final Liberation) and which allows the Shinigami to access his full power. A Bankai can be five to ten times more powerful than the Shikai and is gigantic: due to the incredible power required to use it, Bankai will usually be huge. Ichigo's Bankai is an exception, which Byakuya Kuchiki noted.
Forms of Zanpakuto
Sealed Forms (Unreleased)
Most Zanpakutō are Katana, just like the basic Asauchi from which they originated, but sometimes some can change form after being released. There are four variations of sealed forms among the Zanpakutō of the Shinigami:
-
Katana (Classic Japanese Sword): The most common sword in Japan, the blade has a standard size of about 60 cm, slightly curved. Katanas are characterized by certain distinctive features: the curved single-edged blade, a circular (or rectangular, etc.) guard named Tsuba, and a long handle allowing for a one- or two-handed grip named Tsuka. The Katana is worn edge up and slipped into the Obi (belt). Most Shinigami wear classic Katana.
-
Tachi: This is the precursor of the Katana, used by the samurai of feudal Japan. It is very similar to the katana, but unlike the katana, it was primarily intended for the battlefield, especially for cavalry. To distinguish a Tachi from a Katana, you just have to pay attention to a few points: the Tachi is carried on the side, the edge downwards, its blade is much more curved and slightly longer (70 to 80 cm), and the Saya (scabbard) sometimes has a braid near the guard, at the level of the shoulder strap. In sealed form, Kurosaki Isshin carries a Tachi.
-
Nodachi : Field sword in Japanese : A Nodachi is a single-edged sword, much longer (the blade being between 1m and 1m50) and, therefore, heavier. Similar to the Tachi, but longer, it was used against horsemen during the wars in Japan, and requires a large fighting space. It requires a great mastery as well as a great physical strength, the legend saying that one could cut a horse in two with these swords. Ichigo Kurosaki's Bankai is a Nodachi, though slightly different from the classic ones, the handle being relatively short. Kenpachi (sealed form only) and Hitsugaya also carry Nodachi.
-
Wakizashi : "Side insertion" in English, "Variation à côté" in French (Wiktionnaire) : This is a variant similar to the Katana but about twice as short. The weapon never exceeds 30 to 60 cm. It is used in pair with a Katana, this combination is called Daishô, which can be translated as "wide and short". The utility of the Wakizashi is to fight in closed or narrow places. The sealed form of Kyoraku Shunsui's Zanpakutō is in the form of a Daishô. If we refer to the historical meaning of the weapon, in feudal Japan, only soldiers, samurais (warriors), shoguns, ronins (samurais without masters), authorized persons, and nobles could carry the Katana (a "classic" sword), while anyone could have a Wakizashi, most of the time, they were rich merchants (a weapon, it costs money). Soi Fon's Wakizashi can also be related to a Kodashi, an earlier version slightly more curved, carried like a Tachi.
-
Tantô (or "short sword" or "dagger"): It is a very short and discreet weapon that women could wear in their Kimono, Geisha for example. The principle of the Tantô is to be able to hide easily, it is even shorter than the Wakizashi, its blade never exceeds 15 to 30 cm. It is designed to allow stabbing movements rather than cutting movements (stabbing). The Zanpakuto of lieutenant Iba Tetsuzaemon is, in its sealed form, a Tanto.
The sealed forms of Zanpakutō can also be concealed in other objects of equivalent size so that they are not recognized as weapons. This is very convenient in certain situations. Note known examples with Urahara Kisuke whose weapon is hidden in his cane or Genrûsai Shigekuni Yamamoto and Inaba Kagerôsa, same principle. There are also customized variants of Zanpakutō.
Zanpakutō automatically seal themselves when the owner dies (and die with him) or when he is unconscious.
Shikai
- Shikai (Initial Liberation) is technically the second form of Zanpakutō, if one considers the changes made to the Asauchi as the first transformation. We prefer to avoid thinking of it this way since a large portion of Shinigami swords remain Katana after being sealed again. To activate it, a Shinigami utters an aria followed by the full name of his Zanpakutō, the latter then responds by instantly transforming into its initial released form, i.e. a new weapon, quite often different from the original one, and gains special abilities whose power depends on that of the Shinigami.
The more the relationship between the Shinigami and his Zanpakutō evolves, the more the latter can learn technique to his wielder, this sometimes requires a fight in the inner world of the Shinigami, thus, it happens that Shinigami master the Shikai. This mastery is the first step to acquire the Bankai, but also a prerequisite to advance in the hierarchy of Shinigami. For example, complete mastery of Shikai is required to become at least Vice-Captain.
Shinigami with a very good relationship with their Zanpakutō can even call the latter without an aria, using just his name and in even rarer cases, without even having to utter a word.
Bankai
- Bankai (Final Liberation, or Complete Liberation) is the final and complete form of the Zanpakutō, it is the culmination of his communication training for the Shinigami, to obtain it, it is necessary to force the Zanpakutō's spirit to materialize in reality and confront him. If the Shinigami wins the fight, his Zanpakutō will give him access to his hidden powers via his real name. Attaining Bankai is rare and even once obtained, it takes another ten years of training minimum to perfect its mastery.
The power of a Bankai varies from Zanpakutō to Zanpakutō and from wearer to wearer, but can be five to ten times higher than the Shikai. Only the most powerful Shinigami can use it, it is the ultimate technique in Zanjutsu. Members of the great noble families are exceptionally talented in this area (as they naturally have more Reaitsu in their veins), but even so, only one individual in a generation reaches Bankai. Those who reach Bankai are known to have changed the history of the Soul Society.
Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame or the Double Door of the Modified Scarlet Princess who has the ability to restructure anything she touches.
Offensively, she can split anything within her range in two. The "cutting" is similar to the act of tearing something by removing its seams. Defensively, she can restructure something by sewing it back together, as a form of healing, Urahara uses it to regain her eyes.
It can also be used to increase the effectiveness of something, Urahara who restructures his left arm to have the strength to push Askin away. As soon as he uses his ability, another space seems to open up in the middle of the object he cut in half. At the end of the restructuring, the thing cut in half is sewn back together with threads, which leave stitches. This is how he was able to create a path for Grimmjow to go back to Askin in the Ball Deluxe.
Ichigo Kurosaki and Urahara Kisuke are the only individuals known to have attained Bankai in a matter of days, but using a very dangerous technique devised by Kisuke Urahara. They used a kind of machine forcing the materialization of the Zanpakutō spirit, greatly reducing the amount of training required. This makes it possible to reach the Bankai in just, respectively, two and three days rather than decades. This method becomes lethal after three days of using it, in the best case scenario, the Shinigami will never be able to reach the Bankai again.
Weaknesses: The astronomical amount of Reaitsu deployed to use a Bankai is so enormous that it takes no less than ten years of training to even be able to dose the energy required to maintain it, while keeping its size at a respectable level, the energy consumption to keep a Bankai, even without doing anything, is considerable, so, in the middle of a fight, it is considered that all Bankai have a more or less short life span that it is dangerous to exceed.
A broken Bankai never returns to its primary form, the damage is irreparable and even if it is "reconstitutable", its power will decrease with the damage suffered, the only exception being Sajin Komamura's Bankai, the link between them is so strong that it is enough for one to be wounded for the damage to be reflected on the other, which is also valid for healing.
Having the Bankai is the main prerequisite to be able to reach the rank of Division Captain, with the exception of Kenpachi Zaraki who became Captain without having his Bankai.
Types
There are many types of Zanpakutō, but only two of them have been retained, making all other categories subtypes of these two. Thus, the majority of Zanpakutō are necessarily of a minimum type and sometimes, accompanied by a subtype. The two types are: Physical and Kidô. The Subtypes are for projectiles, elements etc.
Some Zanpakutō are also unclassifiable.

General Subtypes
This is an entirely different category of Zanpakutō, dedicated entirely to specific categories of particularly rare Zanpakutō.
Constant Release:
Zanpakuto remains in Shikai form and permanently, it is impossible to seal it. This is due to the excessive spiritual power of its bearer, so high that it prevents its sword from going into rest. The main inconveniences of this state are the constant consumption of energy and the communication which becomes difficult with Zanpakuto. Thus, the Shikai can hardly be controlled. There are two known cases: Kenpachi Zaraki and Ichigo Kurosaki.
However, now that he is able to use the Shikai, Kenpachi Zaraki can call it normally and make it take its real form (a kind of big battle axe) and despite that, when he reseals his weapon, it takes the usual cracked katana form. One must conclude two things: this form is the real sealed form of his Zanpakuto or a constant semi-released form.
Zanpakuto Double :
This phenomenon is not explained yet, but two people in the Soul Society have a so-called "double" Zanpakuto. Note that according to the author, during an interview, Hisagi Shuhei does not possess a double Zanpakuto, his shikai being a real weapon of Chinese origin having existed and even composed of two scythes, it is a single weapon. The two owners are Kyoraku Shunsui and Ukitake Juishiro.
The first one carries a Daishô (the name of the pair formed by a Katana and a Wakizaki) in a sealed form, so it is two separate blades which are released at the same time, while for Ukitake, his blade is a classical Katana which is divided into two blades connected by a rope. The two weapons and the rope work together in a coherent way. Ichigo Kurosaki has also acquired such a type of Zanpakuto since his time with Nimaya Oetsu.

History
Zanpakuto was conceived by Nimaya Oetsu at least 2000 years ago. It is thanks to him that the Shikai and Bankai exist. The full story is not clearly told and is still based on suppositions.
