Zenitsu Agatsuma (我あが妻つま善ぜん逸いつ Agatsuma Zen'itsu) is a demon slayer who is a member of the Demon Slayer Army. He is Tanjiro Kamado's traveling companion and one of the protagonists of the manga and anime Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Appearance
Zenitsu is a young man with fair skin and eyes ranging from light brown to golden yellow. He has short, blond hair with streaks of different lengths, darker orange at the tips, which falls over his face in a badly cut fringe.
Before he became a demon slayer, Zenitsu's hair was black, but it became this color after he was struck by lightning during his training.
After the battle at Mount Natagumo, his limbs were temporarily shrunken by the Demon Poison but returned to their normal size thanks to the medicine given by Shinobu Kocho, the Pillar of the Insect.
He wears a lighter version of the standard demon slayer's uniform, which consists of a dark brown gakuran jacket, a white belt around the waist and hakama pants, as well as his orange gradient yellow haori with white triangles. In addition, Zenitsu wears tabi socks tied in the front with the same pattern as his haori and white shoes.
Personality
Zenitsu is a coward, saying all the time that he will die soon because of his risky job as a demon slayer. He also has a rather low self-esteem despite his strength, to the point of thinking that he is useless. Zenitsu is afraid all the time, constantly crying and always trying to run away at the slightest sign of danger, claiming that he wants to live a normal, modest life instead of being a slayer.
However, despite these weaknesses, Zenitsu still wants to live up to the expectations people have of him and tries his best if he can. He has a lot of respect and admiration for his comrades and his deceased teacher, Jigoro Kuwajima, and his concentration and desire to avenge him always helps him to put aside his cowardice and doubts at the critical moment.
Zenitsu also seems to be a womanizer. Coming from the desire not to be single if he dies; he tends to accost and try to seduce women he finds cute and ask them to marry him, which ends up irritating them. This trait overcomes his docile personality, especially when he thinks his classmates are flirting with pretty girls, he becomes hysterical and complains at length. During these times, he is also shown to be physically aggressive.
Being the only boy of the trio who grew up in the city, Zenitsu shows more knowledge about how the city works and is constantly embarrassed by the naivety of his partners.
Before the assault on the Infinite Dimensional Fortress, Zenitsu gives off a different, more serious vibe, as if he is focusing on something important. This development occurred after receiving a letter from Chuntaro, which revealed the death of his master and Kaigaku's role behind it. During his fight against Kaigaku, Zenitsu is severe and becomes enraged, making him shout angrily at him for disrespecting their trainer. His sudden change surprises his elder, as Zenitsu shows a more mature personality compared to his usual cowardice.
History
Past
Zenitsu was not raised by his parents, so he did not have good guidance. When he was young, Zenitsu fell in love with a girl and decided to give her money to appeal to her, but the girl ended up running away with another guy, leaving Zenitsu drowning in debt. Seeing that he was having financial problems with debt collectors, Jigoro Kuwajima paid off Zenitsu's debt and decided to train him as a swordsman.
Zenitsu began to refer to Jigoro as "Grandfather" and started to train alongside Grandfather's other disciple, Kaigaku. One day, while training, Zenitsu climbed a tree in fear of being dragged to his death and as he began to panic, a bolt of lightning struck him, causing his hair to turn blond.
Zenitsu and Kaigaku hated each other. However, Zenitsu still respected him as his elder and for his strong ambition. Zenitsu wished to fight alongside Kaigaku as an equal one day and developed his own seventh movement, God of Heavenly Fire.
Synopsis
Final Selection Bow

Zenitsu is seen for the first time at the beginning of the Final Selection at Mount Fujikasane.
After the Final Selection, Zenitsu is one of the four successful people. Zenitsu is seen talking to himself; fearing to die one day. Each of them got a Kasugai crow; except Zenitsu who got a sparrow. All four are told to choose which ore they want their sword to be made with.
Arc Maison aux Tambours
Zenitsu is seen begging a random girl to marry him. Tanjiro Kamado stops Zenitsu and excuses the girl. Zenitsu explains that he has to get married before his next mission, because he might die; he asks Tanjiro to protect him until he gets married. Tanjiro asks him why he became a demon killer. Zenitsu was conned by a woman and got into debt. An old man paid his debt and trained him.

Later, the two share a rice ball as they travel south for their next mission. Zenitsu and Tanjiro arrive at a large house in the woods. Tanjiro smells an unknown odor and Zenitsu hears a strange sound. There are two children nearby, frozen with fear: Shoichi and Teruko. Tanjiro shows them Zenitsu's sparrow; to try to calm them down. The children tell them about a monster that took their brother inside this house and that they followed the monster here. Tanjiro assures them that he and Zenitsu will save their brother and defeat the monster.
Zenitsu asks questions over a non-stop sound of a tsuzumi strike. Once the others finally hear it; a bloody body is thrown out of the house and lands in front of them. The body is not the children's brother. Tanjiro leaves his box with the two children to protect himself. Although Zenitsu refuses to enter the house at first, he forces himself to join Tanjiro.
Once inside; Tanjiro tells Zenitsu about his fractures which are not yet completely healed. This scares Zenitsu even more, because he can't rely too much on Tanjiro to protect himself. The two children are frightened by the scratching coming from the box, and go inside the house after Zenitsu and Tanjiro. The house starts to rumble, and Tanjiro and Teruko are teleported to a random room in the house; while Zenitsu ends up with Shoichi. Looking for the exit, Zenitsu and Shoichi find Inosuke; who overtakes them.

A frightened Zenitsu and Shoichi are wandering around the house when a demon sneaks up on them. A demon traps them in a room and Zenitsu faints from fear. As the demon tries to hit them; Zenitsu cuts off its tongue. While you are unconscious; Zenitsu quickly defeats the demon. Zenitsu wakes up with no memory of his actions and thanks Shoichi for defeating the demon.
Zenitsu and Shoichi enter a room and the room turns; throwing them out of the window. Once outside, they see Inosuke running out of the house. Inosuke tries to attack Nezuko who is inside the box, Zenitsu protects Nezuko's box from Inosuke. Zenitsu explains his great hearing and that he can hear the living beings breathing, beating their heart and blood circulation. Zenitsu knew that Tanjiro was traveling with a demon and tells Inosuke to back off; as he is going to ask Tanjiro himself; why he is traveling with a demon. Inosuke attacks Zenitsu continuously; to try to kill Nezuko. Tanjiro attacks Inosuke to stop him, and the two begin to fight. Inosuke faints under Tanjiro's headbutt.
After burying the dead, they found inside the house; a raven sends the three demon killers to a house to rest. An elderly lady takes care of them while they are there.
Mount Natagumo Arch
Zenitsu, Tanjiro and Inosuke are heading to Mount Natagumo for their next mission. They reach their destination at night. They encounter a Demon Slayer lying on the ground; who begs for help as he is pulled into the forest by spider threads. Zenitsu refuses to go into the forest out of fear; Tanjiro and Inosuke proceed without him. Zenitsu considers not to join his friends. Zenitsu realizes that Tanjiro took Nezuko with him and runs after them to protect Nezuko.
Zenitsu uses Lightning Strike: Six Blows.
While running through the forest; Zenitsu sees a human head with a spider body. Zenitsu runs away only to run into the demon responsible for turning these humans into spider slaves. Zenitsu is bitten by a spider and has only 30 minutes before he turns into a spider too. Zenitsu faints from fear and starts to fight while unconscious. Zenitsu has a flashback of his teacher who encouraged him and never gave up on him, and of his main disciple who always despised him. Zenitsu is only able to do the first form, but has perfected it to perfection; defeating the demon with Thunder Breathing, First Form: Thunderclap and Flash, Six Fold.

Bow Recovery Training

After an overview of the respective conditions of Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke and Nezuko, the four comrades take a well-deserved rest. They are later visited by Murata, who explains what happened to him when he was summoned to Hashira's meeting, and Shinobu, who tells them that their rehabilitation training was about to begin.
Zenitsu thinks about his medical treatment and the condition of the other people turned into spiders. He then thinks about Shinobu and his treatment of these individuals, noting that his sound is erratic and somewhat disturbing. He goes on to note that Tanjiro and Inosuke had been taken by her to the rehabilitation training and had returned extremely exhausted and disheveled, making him despair, as he was scheduled to rejoin the training the next day. The next day, Zenitsu joins her friends at the training, where Aoi Kanzaki explains that there are three parts: a massage to relax the body, a reflex training with Kanao involving a medicated bath in teacups, and a full-body training, which is basically tag, with Kanao and herself.

An angry Zenitsu pulls his friends aside and berates them, annoyed that they "messed around" with girls but came back to the room looking so miserable. A confused Tanjiro asks his fair-headed friend what he's talking about, but the young fool tells him to shut up, explaining that this training involves a lot of physical contact, which basically translates into being touched frequently by girls, something he considers pure bliss. Inosuke, also irritated at this point, says that Zenitsu doesn't know what he's talking about, stating that he'll die inside when he loses to someone with a smaller body, only to make fun of his friend. All three then began training, Zenitsu succeeding due to his love of women, but Inosuke making things difficult for everyone due to his hatred of losing.
Despite the overall positive performances of his two friends, Tanjiro continues to lose. However, he is soon joined by his two comrades, as neither of them can beat Kanao in reflex training or full body training. Over the next five days, the three continue their efforts to beat her, but none of them succeed, causing Zenitsu and Inosuke to give up. Tanjiro continues to persevere, but fails to make progress, continuing to lose for another ten days.

After seeing Tanjiro beat Kanao in his rehabilitation test, Zenitsu and Inosuke falter as they try to learn Tanjiro's total concentration breathing. However, despite many attempts, the two boys are unable to grasp the concept of the technique and struggle to master it. During one of Tanjiro's lessons, Shinobu interrupts to give advice and words of encouragement to Inosuke and Zenitsu. The methods she uses to encourage them include doubting Inosuke's ability so that he gets excited, as well as telling Zenitsu that she is "cheering" for him personally so that he gets excited.
Nine days pass after her visit, and Zenitsu and Inosuke successfully master the breathing technique. Elsewhere, Zenitsu is seen leaning against Nezuko's box as he explains to her the events that happened that day, while telling her that he will take her at night to see some flowers blooming in the garden.
After saying goodbye to Sumi, Naho and Kiyo, the trio arrives at the station. Zenitsu starts to act erratically after realizing that they didn't receive any order and could have stayed at the Butterfly Mansion. While trying to deflect Zenitsu's assault, Tanjiro explains his reasoning that they had to leave to find Kyojuro and that it would be easier to take orders when they are in public.

Infinity Arc Train
Tanjiro, Inosuke and Zenitsu are standing in front of a train. Inosuke, who has no idea what a train is, describes it as the master of the country and plans to attack it. Zenitsu tries to explain it as a steam engine, but Tanjiro intervenes by suggesting that it is a guardian spirit and that they should not attack it. Zenitsu finally explains that it is a vehicle that carries people.
Unsurprisingly, Inosuke charges head first into the side of the train, which causes an altercation with the police due to the fact that they have swords and also due to the fact that Inosuke headbutted the train. Soon after, Zenitsu explains that the Demon Slayer Corps are not officially recognized by the government and that they should hide the fact that they carry swords. Tanjiro also notes that the train is called the "Infinity Train" and that Kyojuro has probably already boarded it, while Zenitsu proceeds to buy tickets for the train.
As they enter the train, Inosuke himself is loud, shouting to be inside the train and causing a ruckus. Zenitsu asks about Kyojuro and Tanjiro describes him as someone with flashy hair and notes that he is very close. The trio suddenly hears loud clamors of "Tasty!" inside the train and trace it to Kyojuro. He is described as a glutton by Zenitsu during his encounter.
As a demon appears on the other side of the train, Kyojuro notes that he couldn't feel it, but continues to draw his sword and manages to finish off the demon. To their amazement, the trio cheers Kyojuro for training them, which he accepts. Thus, giving them to call him 'Aniki'. Afterwards, Kyojuro and the trio fall asleep in the train.
In the train, Tanjiro, Kyojuro, Zenitsu and Inosuke are sleeping deeply. Zenitsu dreams to have a romantic appointment with Nezuko in a peach orchard. It is dark in Zenitsu's subconscious, while a servant of Enmu stumbles while trying to find his spiritual core. Suddenly, the sound of sharp blades breaks the silence and Zenitsu appears behind the servant holding a large pair of scissors. Enraged to find a boy in his subconscious, he says that only Nezuko is allowed there and attacks the servant.
Later, a sleeping Zenitsu Agatsuma falls in front of Nezuko and manages not only to free Nezuko but also the other passengers around them in a flash using Thunder Breathing, First Form: Thunderclap and Flash, Six Fold, he declares that he is going to protect Nezuko and she looks on in admiration. Her admiration is quickly dispelled, however, as he falls back asleep mid-sentence and begins to snore.
Both of them defend three cars of Enmu's train. After the train stops and during the fight between Kyojuro and Akaza, Nezuko also falls asleep in the arms of a sleeping Zenitsu. After the sunrise, Zenitsu makes her enter the box to protect her from the sun.
Some time later, Zenitsu informed Tanjiro and Inosuke about Kyojuro's heroism, in which he had used a lot of his techniques to save the passengers when the train derailed. He then asked Tanjiro if a higher rank had really come and if they were that strong, which the youth confirmed. A tearful Tanjiro expressed his lack of strength and help in Kyojuro's fight, wondering if he could ever be like him.
Inosuke suddenly burst into the conversation, chastising his comrade for his timid words, calling them useless and stating that they simply had to live up to the expectations of their superior. He informed his comrades that all creatures eventually die and that they should not shed a tear of regret, regardless of the cause. Zenitsu points out that Inosuke is also crying, which causes Inosuke to headbutt him, who also begins to hit Tanjiro, telling him that they need to start training as a pair of Kakushi run towards the three.
At the Butterfly Mansion, Zenitsu reflects on Tanjiro and Inosuke's sadness over Kyojuro Rengoku's death, bringing the former some buns to cheer him up. A distraught Kiyo accidentally hits her head into Zenitsu's, shouting that Tanjiro is missing. An apologetic Kiyo further explains to the bewildered Zenitsu that Shinobu had gotten angry at Tanjiro for training while he was still injured and was ordered to rest. Remembering the extent of his friend's injuries, Zenitsu questions his intelligence.

Arc Quartier des Plaisirs
Four months after Kyojuro Rengoku's death, the three boys trained tirelessly at the Butterfly Mansion while occasionally going on individual missions. As Zenitsu goes on solo missions, he becomes less whiny.
Since Tengen Uzui doesn't want to abandon Aoi Kanzaki for his mission, Tanjiro demands that he abandon her and offers to go instead. At this moment, Zenitsu and Inosuke arrive to help protect the girls, and they also offer to go on the mission.
Arc Village des Forgerons
Zenitsu, after the events of the Pleasure Arc, woke up two days before Tanjiro and reluctantly went on a mission.
Countdown to Dawn bow
After the battle against Muzan, Zenitsu would live with Tanjiro, Nezuko and Inosuke. At some point, he would marry Nezuko and start a family that would eventually give birth to great-grandchildren nowadays, Yoshiteru Agatsuma and Toko Agatsuma. He would write the adventures of the Demon Slayer Corps and their final battle against Muzan in a book.

Natural Abilities
Superhuman Hearing: Zenitsu has an overdeveloped hearing, which allows him to detect danger with even the weakest sounds. He is also able to hear the inner thoughts of people if he uses his sense to its fullest. He can use this gift to help him locate demons by comparing the sounds produced by a demon with those produced by a human.
Unconscious Fighting: Zenitsu is most powerful when he is sleeping. When his life is in danger, the fear he feels exceeds the limits his body can bear and makes him faint, which makes him reach his true potential; when Zenitsu is asleep, he wields the sword at a high level based on instinct alone. However, as the story continues, he perfects his skills and courage and relies less and less on this ability, beginning to show the same talents while conscious.
Swordsmanship
Breath of Lightning
It was taught to him by the former Pillar of Lightning, Jigoro Kuwajima. This technique increases his strength and agility to that of a demon. There are six moves, but Zenitsu could only learn the first one, which is the basis for the others, but he perfected it to the point where he could defeat several powerful demons. He later created a seventh move and defeated his elder, who became the Sixth Superior Moon of the Twelve Demonic Moons.
Relations
Tanjiro Kamado
Zenitsu often depends on Tanjiro during intense situations, like when they meet demons. Zenitsu respects and admires his leadership but ridicules him with jealousy when Tanjiro mentions his meetings with girls without Zenitsu. They cooperate well in battle.
Nezuko Kamado
Despite his immense fear of demons, Zenitsu develops a crush on Nezuko. He often tries to get her to agree to marry him and never forgets to mention his love for her whenever he sees her.
However, later on, he calms down in Nezuko's presence and becomes a little less aggressive. He often tells her about the missions with Tanjiro that she misses and promises her at one point to take her to a flower field.
Zenitsu also protects Nezuko several times when she is in danger, like during her first meeting with Inosuke Hashibara or the battle in the train against Enmu.
Kaigaku
Zenistu and Kaigaku were both trained by Jigoro Kuwajima as successors of the Lightning Breath. Animosity aside, Zenitsu has a lot of respect for him, to the point of hitting other Demon Slayers who criticized him behind his back. Kaigaku, on the other hand, has always belittled Zenitsu by calling him "dust" because of his lack of strength.
After Kaigaku becomes a demon and Jigoro commits seppuku, as a consequence of this crime, Zenitsu decides to kill Kaigaku and to avenge his master's death.
Jigoro Kuwajima
Jigoro meets Zenitsu when he saves him from a financial dilemma, taking him to train the young man to become a swordsman and receiving great respect and appreciation from him afterwards. Under Jigoro's mentor, Zenitsu learns the Lightning Blast along with another student, Kaigaku. Jigoro was strict with Zenitsu because of his inexperience, but never stopped teaching him without giving up. When it is later revealed to Zenitsu that his master committed seppuku alone after Kaigaku agreed to turn into a demon, Zenitsu is both shocked and enraged at Jigoro, feeling immense grief at the death of his father figure. However, this loss causes Zenitsu to immediately focus on his training so that he can put his mentor to rest by becoming strong enough to kill Kaigaku and clear Jigoro's name.
Inosuke Hashibara
Zenitsu and Inosuke usually don't get along well despite the fact that they are in the same team. However, in critical situations, they manage to cooperate. Inosuke admires Zenitsu's skills when he is asleep, suggesting that he should sleep forever after seeing the way he fights for the first time.
Anecdotes
- Zenitsu's last name means "my wife" (我妻 agatsuma), while her first name means "goodness" (善逸 zen'itsu). Her first name contains the kanji for "good" (善 zen) and "special, unique" (逸 itsu).

- Zenitsu is a member of the group "Stylish Scruffy Democracy" with Tanjiro (Vocals), Inosuke (Percussions) and Tengen (Harmonica). Zenitsu is the songwriter of the group and the Shamisen player. "Exploding skin and the melancolis of modernodor" is their first song which made everyone who heard it dizzy and threw up non-stop. Zenitsu also wrote a song called "Previous Life's Sins".
- Zenitsu is the only demon slayer outside the Pillars to have achieved certain feats :
- Create a new original form in a breathing style with several users (made by Giyu Tomioka).
- Defeat a Superior Rank by himself (made by Muichiro Tokito).
- Zenitsu has a supraclusion.
- Zenitsu's haori pattern may be inspired by Uroko, a traditional Japanese pattern that symbolizes scales. Samurai used to wear clothes with this pattern to protect themselves from evil.
- After the events of the story, Zenitsu wrote a memoir entitled "The Legend of Zenitsu".
- Zenitsu is superstitious because he was delighted to see two tea stems in his tea in the additional chapters. In Japan, seeing Chabashira or a tea stem floating vertically in your tea cup when drinking Japanese green tea is a sign of good luck.
- It has been noted by Zenitsu that its fighting style focuses on channeling the force into the user's legs and optimizing the production of every muscle and blood vessel.
- There are six forms, but Zenitsu was only able to learn the first form that was supposed to be the basis for the others, but he perfected it to be able to fight against several powerful demons.
