Sae Itoshi

Sae Itoshi

Sae Itoshi is a soccer prodigy, known as the best player in Japan. Sae is also a member of the New Generation World 11, as well as the Royal (Real Madrid) Youth team. He is the older brother of Rin Itoshi.

Sae's main goal before the series started was to become the best striker in the world and in turn the best player in the world, but after leaving Japan and experiencing the professional league in Spain, he changed his dream to become the best midfielder in the world.

At the beginning of the series, he is in Japan only to renew his passport but after hearing about the Blue Lock, he decides to stay. He later joined Japan U-20 to play against Blue Lock Eleven in the Japan U-20 match. After the end of the Japan U-20 match, his current status and location are unknown.

♡ — Loved sae itoshi in the manga but do u think the...

Sae is an average-sized but lean young man with reddish-brown hair and slender green eyes that are framed by a row of long lower lashes, just like his brother, Rin. During the national representative's game, he puts on Japan U-20's white No. 10 jersey with a black shirt underneath and black gloves.

From a young age, Sae has been cold, frank and very serious. He has only ever cared about becoming the best striker in the world and has only had time for things that bring him closer to his goal. Sae can also be arrogant and condescending, looking down on others even if they are older than him and have more organizational authority. He is selfish in his soccer game but has shown the ability to hold back and play his position, not trying to outdo others unnecessarily.

Sae has a lot of pride as a soccer player, despising Japanese soccer and everyone involved in it. Sae says that he would much rather die or play in Europe with a group of students than play in the J-League or play in the Japanese national team. He is very confident in his skills and believes wholeheartedly that no one in Japan is worthy of his skills as a teammate. He doesn't like the fact that he was born in Japan, saying things as if he was just born in the wrong country.

Sae seems to easily command respect in a room of most people because of his reputation and skills, even with his bad attitude and outspoken way of speaking, and is able to handle and get rowdy and tough people to listen to him or do things his way. Although Sae is a difficult person, he is not impossible to work with, especially if he gets something out of it. Out of pure interest, he decides to stay in Japan on a whim after hearing about the Blue Lock project and even joins the Japan U-20 for the Blue Lock Eleven match. But when his interest is satisfied, he does not hesitate to abandon those he deems unworthy of his time.

Is Isagi Better Than Sae Itoshi?

Even though Sae shows arrogance, he doesn't mind staying in his role as a midfielder and key passer. In the Japanese national representative match, Sae gave the Japanese U-20 strikers every chance to score and only after repeated failures did he decide to score himself.

  • Playmaker: A player who controls the flow of the team's offensive play and is often involved in passing moves that lead to goals through vision, technique, ball control, creativity and passing ability.

Sae has been described as having a cold and calculating style of play. He creates consistent ideal plays for his team using his passing and dribbling, essentially controlling the offense and filling in any gaps the defense may have by going to the most critical point using his vision. With every play he makes, Sae aims to crush his opponent quickly and efficiently, destroying them "beautifully."

Professional soccer technique: Sae is considered a genius player in the professional soccer world. He plays soccer in Europe and is considered to be at the level of a pro but did not become fully professional only because of the age requirements in Spain at the beginning of the series. He is considered the best player in Japan and can easily fill a stadium with his name alone because of his immense reputation. Even top players like Rin Itoshi and Shidou are a league below him.

Perfect Kick Technique: Sae has the ability to control the intensity, angle, speed and accuracy of his kicks to an extreme level at all times. Not only is he able to consistently make complex passes using his superior footwork and technique, but added to his skill level, he is able to manipulate the ball so perfectly that his passes are easy to receive but difficult to intercept or block.

  • Long Pass: A long pass, usually 40 to 50 yards long, that gives the ball enough height and power to avoid interception.
  • Lob Pass: Also known as a Chip, is a shot in which the ball is hit from below with precision but with less than maximum force, to launch it high into the air to pass over the opponents head.
  • Line Drive Shot: Sae is able to score with a powerful shot from the end line and directed across the goal. It is a shot that defies the expectations of anyone in the box anticipating a pass and can surprise the goalkeeper.
  • Trivela (pass): A technique in which you spin the ball using the outside of your foot. Sae is able to make a precise pass using the outside of her left foot, in an instantaneous movement with her reflex. Sae is also able to use this pass with her weaker right foot, to still make an accurate pass.
  • Ultra-fast pass: From a free kick, Sae is able to make an incredibly fast pass that borders on a shot. Using his reflex, he takes into account all the conditions, to pass to a place inaccessible to the opponent, as if he was threading a needle..

Counter Dribble: Sae's dribbling is "passive", compared to the more proactive dribbling of Bachira and Yukimiya. Rather than actively passing the defenders, Sae will observe the defender's pace and movement, before passing them in a counter. Sae's dribbling is the best shown so far, being able to effortlessly pass Isagiet Bachira in a fluid movement. It is also shown that he is able to overcome his brother Rin with relative ease, nutmegging him in each of their engagements. Rin noted that the tempo of each of his touches when dribbling is incredibly fast, reinforced by his experience in Europe. Sae will often prioritize passing to move the ball up the court, but when he wants to play seriously, he changes his style to break through on his own with his dribbling, greatly increasing his options. When Sae gets serious, his dribbling is good enough to defeat the entire Blue Lock Eleven formation without any assistance.

  • High Speed Scissors: Sae performs a scissors feint at incredible speed, making it difficult to follow.
  • Double Touch: Sae kicks the ball from one foot to the other, before using the second foot to push the ball past his opponent and out in front. He executed this move at an incredibly fast pace, giving Rin little time to react.
  • Marseille Turn: Sae stopped the ball with the outside of his foot, protecting the ball from his opponent, before rolling past them.
  • Nutmeg: Sae dribbles the ball between a defender's legs, effectively passing his defense with little effort.
    • Cross Elastico Nutmeg: Sae performs an elastico, but crossing the ball behind his dominant leg, before dropping it between his opponent's legs with his non-dominant foot. He first performed this move on his brother Rin upon his return from Spain, but also performed this move on Rin during the Japanese national representative match.
    • Elastico Nutmeg: Sae performs a regular elastico to nutmeg a defender and pass him. He did it to Isagi during his breakthrough in the midfield in the Japan National Representative match.
    • Rabona Nutmeg: A technique where a player kicks the ball with the kicking leg crossed behind the standing leg. Sae can use this technique to play the ball between an opponent's legs, before passing it, as he demonstrated against Yukimiya.
  • Shoulder Block: By using her shoulder to block her opponent, Sae reverses her center of gravity to avoid his tackle.

Reflex: With his incredible reflexes, Sae is able to take into account all the conditions on the field and make decisive plays to get the ball down the field and into the hands of the attackers in the best way possible. Sae will determine who has the most "heat" towards the goal and play the ball to them, which means he is not biased towards any particular striker. This incredible reflex makes Sae difficult to read and stop, as he makes split-second judgments to constantly move the ball and change positions. It is this reflex that allows Sae to operate on the same wavelength as Shidou and exploit his abilities to their full potential.

Metavision: With his immaculate and trained vision, Sae is able to constantly collect data on every player, every play they make and their positions on the field and after analyzing this data, he is able to react to their movements instantly and without even being noticed by arriving at the most critical point of their plays, effectively stopping their attack or easily bypassing their defense.
