The rumors of Chainsaw Man season 2 might eventually prove to be true. Until then, here are five similar anime to help fans of the series.
Chainsaw Man was easily one of the most popular and talked about new series of the Fall 2022 anime season. The dark fantasy series made a splash with its extreme violence, intriguing cast of anti-heroes, and captivating world building. While it seems likely that the anime will return for a second season, some rumors indicate that it won't be until 2024. That's a long wait for eager viewers, who are looking for anime like Chainsaw Man to try and fill the wait.
Based on the best-selling manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, Chainsaw Man follows a poor young man named Denji, who is struggling with the debt of his late father. To meet his financial obligation, Denji works as a Devil Hunter for the yakuza. However, when the organization betrays and kills Denji, he makes a deal with his dog Pochita, the chainsaw devil. The two merge into a human-devil hybrid, Chainsaw Man, who can turn his body parts into chainsaws. He is then recruited by the government's Public Safety Division, but although Denji finds himself living in luxury for the first time in his life, it comes at a high cost.

5/ Durarara !! (2010)
Eager to live a more exciting life in the big city, high school student Ryuugamine Mikado moves to Ikebukuro. There, a childhood friend introduces him to all that the bustling Tokyo district has to offer. However, while everyday life can be more exciting, it is at night that this district really shows its colors. It is filled with eccentric and potentially dangerous characters, ranging from a shifty news broker and a surly bodyguard with anger management issues to an underground doctor and the mysterious "Headless Rider." Ikebukuro has many secrets and much tension bubbling under the surface. The only certainty is that Mikado's life will never be the same again.
Although this is a relatively tame series, at least by Chainsaw Man standards, Durarara ! The sense of humor certainly goes to some dark places. The owner of a Russian sushi restaurant willingly assures his customers that his sushi does not use human ingredients; the man in love with a Dullahan desperately trying to find his missing head was involved in separating her from it in the first place; a group of hardcore otaku regularly torture people to extract information using methods from their favorite manga or anime. Overlaying all of this, however, is a tone of joyous chaos and unbridled fun, with the threat of murder and gang warfare only underscoring Durarara!! is the tumultuous celebration of life.
4/ Blood Blockade Battlefront / Kekkai Sensen (2015)
Discover the Figure of Pochita |
In Hellsalem's Lot, formerly New York City, supernatural monsters have coexisted with humans since a gateway between Earth and the afterlife opened three years ago, trapping everyone in an impenetrable bubble. Leonardo Watch goes there to get answers about his newly awakened powers and stumbles upon Libra, a secret organization charged with keeping order in this strange and dangerous city. Joining their ranks, Leo and his fellow misfits fight to keep Hellsalem's Lot habitable, even as terrorists threaten the town's fragile peace.
Chainsaw Man and Blood Blockade Battlefront ( Kekkai Sensen ) have much in common, from humans having to live with otherworldly creatures to these same groups fighting each other. The main characters in the latter - including a werewolf in a suit, a woman and mother wearing an eye patch, and an incorrigible womanizer who can manipulate his own blood to create deadly weapons - are often as foolish and reckless as Denji or Power . Blood Blockade Battlefront may seem serious, but its overriding mood is one of raucous fun, with an ED sequence that is every bit as entertaining and addictive as the opening of Chainsaw Man .
3/ ID: Invaded (2020)
Discover the Chainsaw Man Figure |
Sakaido, aka Narihisago Akihito, is a former detective now imprisoned for his actions following a family tragedy. However, he continues to work with the authorities by delving into the unconscious of criminals. This is due to the development of a system that allows some people to virtually explore psychological planes of existence. Using his keen detective skills, Narihisago is now on the case of a series of murders, which may involve a serial killer known only as John Walker.
ID: Invaded is a strange series that presents itself as perfectly serious despite its far-fetched premise involving "id well" diving technology. Like a non-dystopian version of Psycho-Pass , the series focuses on serial killers and their psychological makeup, though it is a bit more black and white in its messaging. However, this is not to say that ID: Invaded lacks humor. While it is certainly not a comedy, its tendency towards the absurd, coupled with its propensity to insert powerful rock tracks during random action scenes, make it a genuinely entertaining experience rather than a serious or dark one, regardless of its macabre content.
2/ Dorohedoro (2020)
Discover the Power Figure |
Welcome to Hole, a blighted and lawless neighborhood that has long been a testing ground for outside wizards. In Hole, viewers meet Caiman, a man with the head of a reptile attached to his otherwise human body. With no memory of his past, Caiman tracks down the wizards in an effort to find the one who did this to him and exact revenge. Accompanying him in his misadventures is Nikaidou, a young woman who runs a restaurant in Hole but is secretly a witch herself. With gangsters, demons and other magic users thrown into the mix, Caiman and Nikaidou will embark on the craziest journey of their lives.
If Chainsaw Man shares any DNA with any other modern animated series, it's Dorohedoro. Shameless and viscerally gruesome, the anime's violence is matched only by its macabre comedy. This includes one of the best baseball episodes of all time (which just happens to feature, among other characters, a wizard resembling an undead Frankenstein monster and a gigantic domesticated cockroach). Dorohedoro is undeniably scary and unsettling, but it's also nonchalantly joyful, even cheerful about it. The opening theme, appropriately titled "Welcome to Chaos," probably gives viewers at least a taste of what they're in for - namely, a fun, intensely captivating and exuberantly macabre adventure.
1/ Akudama Drive (2020)
In the distant future, Kansai has become a vassal state of Kanto. Here, the police carry out public executions of anyone considered an enemy of society. The executions of the worst criminals - the so-called "Akudama" - attract crowds. When a young woman is inadvertently caught in the crossfire between a group of Akudama and the police, she is forced into a perilous adventure that ends up being much more than an apparent train robbery. In fact, it may have far-reaching consequences that will shake the foundations of society.
While not quite on the same level of gore as Chainsaw Man, the amount of bloodshed in Akudama Drive was enough to justify many of the censored scenes in the TV version. Nevertheless, the intentionally zany and colorful nature of the series gives it a cartoonish atmosphere. Fully aware of its own ridiculousness, Akudama Drive focuses only on these aspects, delivering a flamboyant, vivid, and forward-thinking story that, incredibly, still manages to convey several genuinely moving and thoughtful moments. With a serial killer, a sadistic doctor and a stupid street brawler, among other equally entertaining characters, Akudama Driveis a wrecking ball of a show. It's as unpredictable as it is offbeat and thrillingly violent, complete with OP alternative rock whose repetitive English refrain is "I don't care!"
