Faye Valentine

Faye Valentine

Faye Valentine is the deuteragonist of the anime and manga series Cowboy Bebop . She is a wanted criminal who joined the Bebop team after crossing them twice. Although she looks no older than 22-23 years old, Faye is actually about 77 years old, having been cryogenically frozen after a space shuttle accident, where she spent 54 years in suspended animation.

She was voiced by Megumi Hayashibara in the Japanese version of the anime (who also got to know Rei Ayanami better in Neon Genesis Evangelion ), and by Wendee Lee and Sherry Lynn in her childhood in the English version of the anime. For the Netflix live action version of Cowboy Bebop , she is played by Daniella Pineda.

Apparence

She is often seen with a cigarette and in a revealing outfit with bright yellow hot pants and a matching revealing top (and, occasionally, a bikini). She sports purple hair, green eyes and a voluptuous body. Not surprisingly, many of the men she meets find her attractive.

Personality

Spike describes Faye as a woman with an attitude. She is a brash, selfish, and rather lazy woman, although she does take a lot of time to take care of her own appearance. Faye has been arrested several times in the series and has spent time handcuffed on the ship. She sometimes expects the boys to handle the bounties for her, while she sits idly by to reap the benefits and eat all their food, which is another source of conflict.

Faye has an almost unstoppable attitude, and even her sometimes innocent smile can be seen as dangerous. She has many bad habits, such as drinking, gambling regularly, smoking cigarettes and sometimes cigars, becoming unnecessarily violent, and turning to partners when the profits seem too meager. Sarcastic and presumptuous, she rarely appears weak or in need of support. She boasts and takes care of herself, never trusting others, cheating and lying overnight. She also shows herself capable of unpredictable behavior, such as when she kissed Ed on the mouth to get Ed out of one of his disjointed moments.

She is a woman adept at getting what she wants; her indomitable exterior hides a more delicate interior. When she awoke from her 54-year cryogenic sleep, not only was she saddled with a huge debt she had no way to pay, but she was also diagnosed with total amnesia, a stranger in a mysterious world she was not a part of. of and didn't understand, surrounded by people who claimed to help her but were only there to take advantage of her naiveté. The last name "Valentine" was only a name given to her by the doctor who woke her up; the circumstances of her accident, her previous life, and even her real name remain a mystery and are only gradually revealed as the series progresses.

It has been suggested that she came from Singapore on Earth and was the daughter of a very wealthy family, as the city's famous Merlion statue figures prominently in scenes of her childhood, and that memorabilia and film from her childhood showed her living in a large mansion. Faye is supposed to be her real name, as a high school classmate (now an elderly disabled woman) recognizes her and calls her by that name.

In her first episode, she claims to be descended from Roma, but it later becomes clear that this was probably a lie. Completely betrayed by someone she thought she could trust after waking up, Faye found herself burdened with even more money to pay, and the situation led to an extreme hardening of her personality. She even says in Session 11, "you either cheat or you're cheated," and that "nothing good has ever happened to me when I've trusted others."

Throughout the series, although she maintains her sarcastic attitude and unpleasant nature until the very end, it is easy to see her grow as a character. She learns to value her fellow students, returning to the Bebop when she realizes that it is the only home she has left, referring to it as the "only place I could go back to." She grows to understand the drawbacks of being a loner, and that even though her "family" is somewhat dysfunctional, it is still a place where she will always belong.

Throughout the series, even as she grows to care for Jet and even Edward in her own way, it is her relationship with Spike that remains a cause for consideration for most. In one episode, Spike teases her and asks if she'll come help him if he's in trouble, and though she scoffs at his remark, she eventually does. Faye even points her gun at him in a threatening gesture in the final episode, as Spike walks away to what she and Jet both realize is his possible death, and asks why he's wasting his life. After he leaves, Faye cries.

Capabilities

Seemingly nothing more than a thorn in her partners' side, Faye is actually a well-rounded member of the team. She can hold her own exceptionally well for a woman of her slight appearance, displaying at least once in the series (in "Cowboy Funk") that she has a powerful punch. An adept flyer, Faye has held her own against Spike in a dogfight in her Red Tail ship, and sometimes even against Spike in a dogfight (though Spike eventually proved to be the better pilot). She also excels with firearms and is first seen in the series completely disabling a magazine with a Heckler & Koch MP5K, though she is immediately apprehended afterwards. In the film, she is seen with the same gun, in addition to her usual companion: a Glock 30.
