Apparence
Kage appears to be a small black puddle with two slanted blue eyes. He has two arms that disappear into his body when not in use, and a third arm that serves as his mouth.
Personality
After years of uncertainty and abuse, Kage developed a very rough exterior, posing as a hardened thief who would not hesitate to kill someone. In reality, Kage is empathetic and generous, and quickly dropped his pretensions around Bojji once he realized the young prince's situation.
Kage is much more worldly and savvy than Bojji, and tends to act as both the voice of reason and the resident skeptic in their adventures..
Plot
Fleeing the Bo Kingdom
As a small child, Kage was forced to flee his native kingdom of Bo after the nobility conspired to eradicate the Shadow Clan. Kage's mother sacrificed her life so that her child could flee. Kage was almost captured, but was helped by the young Countess Poise and her butler, who ordered the young shadow to cross the nearby toxic forest (a massive forest filled with toxic flora and fauna).
Kage has not returned to the kingdom of Bo since, and the fate of the kingdom is unknown.
The thief
Alone and lonely, Kage wandered into a nearby town, where he was shunned and despised by the townspeople. News of the Shadow Clan's eradication had spread, and the villagers refused to help the young shadow for fear of being persecuted themselves. Kage was forced to steal food to survive, and soon ran into another major figure in his life: The Thief.
The Thief, already accustomed to living outside the law, agreed to take Kage as long as Kage cleaned his house, made his food, and helped him with his theft. Delighted to finally have a companion again, Kage complied and spent the next few years as the Thief's obedient assistant. During this time, Kage made a habit of sneaking out of the house to retrieve his father figure at the end of the night, helping the Thief get home and to bed. Unfortunately, the thief felt no such empathy or loyalty to Kage, and one night, in a drunken stupor, he sold Kage to the local magistrate.
In a huge stroke of luck, Kage had already left his home to search for the Thief, narrowly missing the magistrate's soldiers. Irritated by this, the magistrate killed the thief and left him to die in his own home. Kage would return to say goodbye to his surrogate father figure before moving on, and the thief died regretting his actions.
Not knowing any other way of life, Kage became a thief himself and roamed the countryside stealing whatever he could.
Meet Bojji
Kage's thieving lifestyle would continue until a chance encounter with Bojji on the outskirts of the kingdom of Bosse. Although Kage initially stole Bojji, the two discovered that Kage could somehow understand Bojji's meaning even without words. Bojji was overjoyed and obediently let Kage steal him several times, so much so that Kage eventually became curious and secretly followed Bojji home.
Kage was flabbergasted that Bojji was a real prince, but more importantly: he was irritated by the harsh treatment Bojji was receiving from everyone else in his life. At that point, Kage decided to become Bojji's friend and told Bojji so the next time they met... after an excited Bojji offered Kage a whole chest of gold and jewels.
Filled with new determination, Kage tried to sneak out of the castle in Bosse's kingdom, but was immediately caught by Bebin of the Big Four.
Initially suspicious, Bebin believed that someone had hired the Shadow Clan to infiltrate the Kingdom of Bosse and possibly kill Bojji. Kage would remain imprisoned until Bebin could verify his story. Once satisfied, Bebin released Kage and gave him a new mission: someone had ordered Bojji's assassination on an upcoming trip, Kage was to stay out of sight at all times and act as Bojji's secret bodyguard.
Reunion at the Gates of Hell
Bojji's potential assassin would turn out to be his fencing instructor, Domas of the Big Four. Domas pushed Bojji through the Gates of Hell, a huge fiery chasm that serves as the entrance to the Underworld. Kage narrowly managed to save Bojji, and the two shared a tearful reunion on a small rock outcropping in the chasm.
It turns out that Bebin had also given Kage another mission: to lead Bojji to the underworld and find a mysterious guardian who could help make Bojji strong.
After a frightening encounter with King Desha , Bojji and Kage managed to locate the mysterious guardian: none other than Desha's younger brother, the whimsical prince Despa . Despa had the uncanny ability to peer into people's souls to find their strengths and weaknesses, and agreed to do so for Bojji after Kage gave him a chest of gold and jewels.
While Bojji did the training, Kage helped cook and clean for the two princes, doing what he could to ensure his friend's growth. They succeeded and Bojji emerged from his training as the strongest man in the world.
Return to the Kingdom of Bosse
After a tearful goodbye with Despa, Bojji and Kage returned to the outside world, returning to the kingdom of Bosse. Unbeknownst to them, in their absence, the mysterious Miranjo had begun her plan to overthrow the kingdom, freeing six dangerous prisoners from the underworld dungeons and releasing them into the castle.
Kage and Bojji were soon reunited with Despa as he and a detachment of the Underworld Order headed to the kingdom of Bosse to recapture the prisoners. Joining forces, Bojji would be instrumental in subduing many of the more dangerous prisoners, turning the tide of the invasion attempt. Unfortunately, this would not last, and soon Bojji was forced to face his most powerful opponent to date: the depraved immortal Ouken .
Ouken to swallow
When things looked bleakest and his best friend was about to be slaughtered by the vicious immortal, a weeping Kage discovered a new ability. When experiencing extreme emotion, members of the Shadow Clan can grow to massive size for a few moments. Kage used this growth to literally swallow Ouken, preventing him from attacking Bojji.
Unfortunately, Kage's emotional gamble didn't work and the immortal simply made its way out of Kage's body, killing the young shadow. When Kage awoke, he found himself on the banks of a mysterious river, with his mother on the opposite bank, beckoning him to cross. Kage happily did so and almost passed into the afterlife, until an unfortunate Miranjo stopped him and brought his soul back to the side of the living.
While Kage was dying, Ouken had trampled on all his allies. Almost the entire battlefield, including Bojji and Despa, had also been killed. Finally stirred to action, Bosse, an unfortunate ally of Miranjo, joined the fight. Bosse had been reincarnated into the body of his second son Daida at the time and was able to combine his own raw strength with Daida's inherited healing magic to resurrect the entire battlefield.
Bosse then turned his attention to Ouken and easily crushed the immortal, driving his regenerating body into a small rock to deny him the space he needed to rebuild. After a brief conversation with Miranjo, and a subsequent altercation with a mocking demon, the attempted coup was finally ended.
Consequences
Bojji officially succeeded his father, Bosse, as king of the kingdom of Bosse. Kage suddenly felt unworthy of his friend and displaced in Bojji's new kingdom.
Reluctantly, Kage slipped away, determined to live a dignified life using Bojji as an example. He soon discovered that the world was still very unwelcoming to a member of the Shadow Clan, but used his positive memories of Bojji to get through it.
Without his best friend, Bojji quickly fell into a depression. It turns out that Bojji relied on Kage as much as Kage had relied on Bojji. After a brief conference with his stepmother and the king's council, Bojji officially passed the crown to his younger brother so that he could search for his friend.
Bojji and Kage tearfully reunited outside a small town, and the two decided to travel together, learning all they could with the ultimate goal of founding their own kingdom.
Relationships
Bojji
Bojji is Kage's first and best friend. The two share a deep and meaningful connection, and indeed Kage was the first person on earth who could understand Bojji, even without sharing a language.
Although Kage sometimes feels unworthy of his best friend, Bojji deeply appreciates Kage and seems to view the two as complete equals.
Kage's mother
Kage's mother loved her son enough to sacrifice herself to save him, something Kage never forgot. Kage still misses his mother very much.
Despa
Although not his direct student, Kage seems to have formed a genuine friendship with Prince Despa . The two tend to be comically antagonistic to each other, with Kage generally playing the straight man.
Capabilities
Clan of the shadow
Kage is a member of the Shadow Clan, an infamous line of cursed assassins with inhuman, flat, dark, almost fluid bodies. Kage's inhuman body gives him many abilities, including:
- Moving quickly and quietly over almost any surface, including vertical walls from top to bottom and under doors.
- Blends into shadows and other dark areas with relative ease.
- Accelerated healing (compared to most other species).
- Fully retract its limbs into its body when not in use, including its mouth.
Store and retrieve objects larger than itself in its body. - Its state of rage, which allows it to grow to a massive size (large enough to swallow an entire adult human).
Use of the knife
Kage has some skill with knives, whether from his early training in the Shadow clan, after spending time living with the thief, or living alone as a thief. He armed himself with a knife during his first encounter with Bojji and can accurately use the throwing knives given to him by Bebin.
Kitchen and Household
Kage is an excellent cook and housekeeper, due to his time acting as a servant to a thief. He usually takes care of the cooking duties when he travels with Bojji.
Endurance to pain
Kage has a superhumanly high pain threshold, especially considering his age. He has been both tortured and interrogated in his short life and has never buckled under pressure.
