Apparence

Spike is 27 years old, tall and thin. He has fluffy dark green hair and reddish brown eyes, one real and one artificial. A flashback in Session 6 revealed that his fully functional right eye had been surgically replaced with a cybernetic eye (although Spike himself may not have a conscious memory of the procedure since he claims to have lost his natural eye in an "accident"). He is usually dressed in a blue leisure suit, with a yellow shirt and Lupin III inspired boots. He has his brown hair in an afro. His outfit consists of an all blue suit and pants with a yellow shirt underneath.

Personality

Spike is a lazy, apathetic, indifferent and slothful person. He spends the vast majority of his time on the Bebop lounging, watching TV or sleeping. On rare occasions, he can also be seen reading or practicing Jeet Kune Do, a martial arts practice in which he is very good, being among other things passionate about Bruce Lee's movies. He is also a heavy smoker, being shown with a cigarette in his mouth in almost every shot. Spike is rarely seen excited about anything and even less frequently says he likes something. However, there are exceptions; in the film, he gets very excited when he fights Elektra, saying he likes the kind of woman who can kick his ass.

He generally behaves in a phlegmatic manner and walks slouched almost as if he were sleepwalking. He seems to be tormented by the ghosts of his past and has frequent nightmares of his life in the Red Dragon. He considers that he has already died once so shows no fear of the possibility of being killed, often acting as if to defy death, thus proving that he is still alive. However, in a conversation with Faye, he admits that he does not want to die because of "hatred of".

One of the recurring themes surrounding Spike's character is how he views himself and his life. Following the implantation of an artificial eye, he says that his left eye, the real one, sees the present while the synthetic right one sees the past, making the past indelible in his mind, not allowing him to get rid of it or forget it. Despite this, he generally encourages others to forget the past as "not important", especially Faye, who has amnesia for the majority of the series. Spike's astrological sign is Cancer, which corresponds to his inability to let go of the past.

When he's not working, Spike is very laid back, sarcastic, and sharp to the chagrin of his teammates. He can usually be found lying on the couch or reading magazines. Spike's philosophy seems to be based on the ancient samurai ideals of immediacy, such as seeing oneself as dead and the idea of death as waking up from a dream, both of which are elements of bushido illustrated in the Hagakure. His pets hate children, pets and women with attitudes. Ironically, all of the Bebop members except himself and Jet ( Ed, Ein, and Faye, respectively) fall into these categories, as discussed in Session 9.

Although people often talk about cowboys in an almost heroic sense, his image is far from the idea of one and, instead, has typical characteristics of an anti-hero. He never acts to protect anyone but only out of self-interest, often has to be persuaded to engage in a hunt that he does not consider worth his time, has a rather sharp and cynical sense of humor, and when pursuing a bounty, he often throws himself headfirst into the action, regardless of the damage done to people and buildings. Finally, he has no moral qualms about having to kill someone. In the film, he even tells an old woman that he and the Bebop team do not serve and protect and that their work is strictly commercial, although Jet doubts that he really means it.

Despite all this, Spike still has a good heart and, whether he admits it or not, is more than willing to help others without expecting anything in return, which is rather ironic considering his job. A good example of this is in Session 7, when Victoria Terpsichore offered him a wad of cash, and he only took one note saying the rest was for her husband. He treats Ein as a kind of emergency food and Ed as a burden, but in reality, although he never says a word of appreciation to his companions, Spike harbors an obvious affection for each of them and often seems willing to help them. This affection is manifested in his constant choice not to interfere with their past, even if it means letting a bounty pass. In particular, he shares a genuine brotherly affection with Jet, and it is safe to say that they consider themselves best friends. In fact, they are often seen talking together like two old friends. Although they often fight because of Spike's stubbornness and recklessness, which sometimes gets him banned from Bebop, these arguments are always resolved in short order. Jet is also the only person Spike confides in about his past.

Spike's most complex relationship in the series is with Faye. Most of the time, they just bicker. However, in moments of danger, Faye has always shown concern for Spike, and Spike has shown some empathy for Faye's situation. Faye also always cared for Spike when he was injured, although she always maintained a bitter attitude. The affection between them is quite obvious and many people have speculated that Faye might be in love with Spike. Watanabe said of this, "Sometimes I get asked, 'What does Spike think of Faye?' I think he likes her a lot. But he's not a very simple person and he makes sure not to show it."

Skills and abilities

Spike has many talents and abilities, including razor-sharp eyesight, abnormally acute perception, and extraordinary luck. Spike uses sleight-of-hand techniques to win card games, pick pockets, and even slip items onto other people without being noticed. He is well versed in weapons (such as his personal Jericho 941 or Ruger P85 as well as other firearms and explosives) and hand-to-hand combat skills due to his past employment with the Red Dragon crime syndicate. He follows Jeet Kune Do, the mindset developed by Bruce Lee, although he has a penchant for French boxing high kicks. Spike is also a pilot and flies a converted asteroid pilot called Swordfish II which is armed with four machine guns, several missile launchers and a single plasma cannon. Spike also repeatedly demonstrates an exceptionally keen intellect, although he has a habit of neglecting to plan ahead, as Jet noted. Spike has repeatedly been able to outwit the entire Red Dragon syndicate, predict his opponents' moves (whether in combat or in the casinos), and use lateral thinking to get out of almost any situation life throws at him. He can also swallow and regurgitate objects such as a token (casino chip) at will.

History

Spike was a rising member of the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate, when he worked with his then partner, Vicious. Both were mentored by Mao Yenrai. Badly wounded after a shootout in the slums of Mars, Spike stumbled to the home of Julia, who at the time was Vicious' girlfriend. The couple fell in love while she was treating him. Spike decided to leave the union with Julia. Vicious informed Julia that he would kill Spike, or else Spike and Julia would face death for his betrayal. Spike apparently managed to fake his own death by engaging in a gunfight alone in a church against unidentified opponents, which allowed Red Dragon to forget about him. He waited for Julia so they could escape and be free, but she never arrived.

Sometime after his fake death, Spike met former ISSP cop turned bounty hunter Jet Black and became a partner. Spike moved to Jet's ship, the Bebop, and the two worked together for three years before the other crew members joined them.

Throughout the series, clues and flashbacks to Spike's past are revealed. He comes face to face with Vicious again in episode five, when Vicious lures Spike out of hiding by murdering Mao Yenrai and kidnapping Faye. They fight a duel, but survive the encounter. They meet a second time on Callisto during a botched drug deal, but Vicious manages to escape.

In the final episode, Spike and Julia reunite and continue their plans to escape the Red Dragons. They fight their way out, but Julia is shot and killed. Spike returns to the Bebop for a meal with Jet, and the two share a moment of understanding as Spike tells his partner about his life situation. As he leaves to settle the score with Vicious, he is confronted by Faye. He tells Faye the story behind his cyber eye and the effect it has had on his outlook on life. Faye asks why Spike is leaving to ruin her life. Spike replies that he is not leaving to die, but rather to see if he is really alive. He then leaves to confront the past he left behind three years earlier. He storms the Red Dragon headquarters, killing many members, and then he and Vicious confront each other.

After a brief confrontation, Spike and Vicious exchange blows simultaneously and Vicious dies. Spike reminds him of Julia's last words, "It's all... a dream..." before he heads down the stairs, where he is confronted by the rest of the Red Dragons. Imitating a gun with his fingers, Spike utters one last word, "Bang", smiles and collapses.

Spike's fate at the end of the series remains open. It is implied that Spike may have died from injuries sustained during his final duel with Vicious and the Red Dragons (the collapse, the fading star, the angelic chorus). However, in an interview, Watanabe said, "I never officially said he was dead. At this point, I can tell you that I don't know if he is alive or dead." He also said that he thought fans would be upset if there was a sequel.
